'Chaos and Retribution' series comes to its end with this installment - and it's another great ending in another great series by Eric T. Knight.
Spoilers possible:)
As with all good books whose main theme is a quest to save the world against the most evil of all evils you predict and hope for a happy ending, but with Eric T. Knight you can be sure that whatever comes on the way to the end of the story will be unpredictable, surprising and heart-wrenching...
The plot takes over where the previous book finished - Aislin, Fen and Karliss lost their battle against the Devourers who got the key to open the Abyss... so all hope seems to be lost. But there's one thing that may still be the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel - there is no loyalty amongst the devils... Our three heroes are miraculously saved by someone you would least expect to and now they have another chance to try and complete their fate as world saviours. The only problem is, they are so different in personalities that they have to learn how to be a team - that's the part of the story that is very well done. The dialogues between Karliss and Fen are humorous, intelligent, brilliant in their not so rare absurdity. Another strong point - the subplots, the parts of the tale when we follow Ravin in Samkara and the Wolfpack (reinforced by Rendel, Hulagu and Batu), Netra and Rome in Qarath. All of them have their part in the final victory, as powerless as some of them may be - cause you don't need magical powers to fight your enemy, you just need courage and brains:)
I also like the ending of the book a lot. The way the saga started - with three separate stories of three separate kids - thus it also ends, with each of the kids getting their own closure. And each closure fits so well the personality of each of them:) (I can't write anything more not to give you any more spoilers:)).
As with all the book by Eric T. Knight, the world created is rich, masterfully described with just a few words and images, and it seems real, live, and oddly familiar. You would really like to go on holiday there and you definitely think it worth saving:)
So, if you are a fantasy fan but still don't know the worlds of Eric T. Knight's 'Immortality and Chaos' and 'Chaos and Retribution' series, don't wait any longer, grab the books and delve into them. And if you do know them, don't miss this final installment in the saga - it's a definite must!
