You're not the same as you were before…

That’s what happens when a man has been to hell and back--literally--as Georg Kivistö, former bruin king, knows all too well.

Restless. Aimless. Georg is at loose ends until he encounters a strange woman in a strange land. Sweet, alluring and innocent, Alice soon wraps him around her little finger, one maddening knot at a time. Georg knows better than anyone he can't afford another romantic entanglement, but what a bruin wants a bruin gets.

Or dies trying.

As shadows close in, the path to a new throne seems inevitable, but is it a crown Georg really needs--

Georg Has Lost Himself In Another World Trying To Make Sense Of His Life

Before the dawn of time and before the world was created, there was a place called Nilfheim. Niflheim was the darkest and coldest region, and consisted of ice, frost and fog. Niflheim was and still is, in the northern region of Ginunngagap. To the south of Ginunngagap there is a place called Muspelheim, it is the land of fire.

I absolutely loved this book! Georg is the best hero- so protective and sweet! Alice is an awesome heroine. She was strong when she needed to be and very brave. This series is wonderful! So well written and creative! I would love another book or two about all the couples- maybe with stories about babies!

Oh my ever loving gods and goddesses! I am so freaking happy right now!

I hated what happened to Georg in the first book of this series and when he showed up later I knew that he needed his own happy ever after. But the series was supposed to be finished and I actually mourned for him. When I learned that Ms. Blair was taking pity on all our broken hearts I was thrilled, ecstatic and antsy to get Georg’s story. And she did not disappoint!

This book is everything I could’ve asked for and so much more. Georg has a pretty rough history but that doesn’t even touch on what’s in store for him now. He’s such a wonderful character, loyal, protective, possessive and eventually even a bit romantic! The cherry on top is he’s a bruin and holy wow I loved this bruin, dare I say even more than Stephen? Okay, so, maybe it’s a close tie.

This author knows how to not only do heroes right, but heroines as well. With a delicate balance she presents us with a character that is a bit broken, has a hint of fragility and a consuming amount of frightened desperation. She then turns and gives her the ability to find within herself the strength to heal, the power to grow strong, and the courage to stand up against the things that would harm her and those she loves. It is freaking amazing!!! Alice is a perfect heroine and I loved her!

I can’t express enough how much I absolutely loved everything about this story! The twisted fairytale that lies beneath the surface just fueled my enjoyment and the style in which this book was written actually had a fairytale feel to it without hitting me over the head. Pure perfection!

This book is the icing on the cake. The previous six books contained the stories of the sisters. And while Magpies ended in a HEA and all my questions were answered. I like (I would imagine) most readers wanted more Georg.

So this is Georg’s story.

He’s travelling. Enjoying his second chance at life and trying to work out what part he plays. He’s on Niflheim slowly drowning in quick or rather slow sand. When he’s finally rescued by a human called Alice.

Alice is all kinds of fascinating. Kidnapped as a child and brought to live in a rundown castle in the realm of Niflheim. Alice is human so why would someone take the time and trouble to kidnap her and imprison her in an isolated realm?

Georg finds himself torn between duty and love.

I'm thinking of how easy it is to lose everything because of someone else's baggage. A childhood, a family -- a whole life. I don't want to lose Georg because of my baggage or his. - Alice

I growl, getting to my feet and shoving her hand away even though losing that small connection is like losing the ability to breathe. What I really want to do is yank her into my arms right here and now and say f*ck it all. But I've already made my choice. [...] It's the whisper-soft goodbye that hitches my step and almost brings me to my knees. - Georg

A (not so) quick caveat before we begin...

Okay, so now we've finally reached the end.

(Maybe. *LOL*)

I must admit that there were signs of more to come in the previous book. There are always undercurrents at work throughout this series and if you pay close attention, the author gives numerous hints and indications of what's to come, even as she takes you on a winding journey filled with wild twists and wonderful turns....

That being said, as certain conclusions are reached, other doors are left open. We've come full circle with Georg and Alice's tale, and yet, it could be argued, the ouroboros is in continuous motion... so I suspect that the odd loose threads that purposely remain may be spun into new FTC related tales in future.

We shall see, my pretties....

My life has been a secret shrouded in a mystery locked in a dream...

Alice Liddell is the Alice, but she didn't just fall down the rabbit hole. Unfortunately, she was dragged, kicking and screaming, into the darkness as a child, and then locked away by a very Mad Hatter (for over a century) who had wicked plans for her.

Still, she dreamed of someday being the 'hero' of her own story, even as she didn't know how or if that would ever be possible. Until one day, still lost and trapped in a 'world of fog', she saved the life of a Bruin (bear shifter) man who also needed to find his way 'home', just as much as she, and made a huge choice that would take her on the path to freedom, self-awareness, self-discovery, and love...

I adored Alice. Her innocence, honesty, kindness, desire to learn, craving for connection, huge heart, as well as her inner strength, determination, vulnerability, and courage in the face of so many challenges, drew me in and had me rooting for her all the way. I wanted her to finally have the life she deserved after her long imprisonment and I knew that she was powerful beyond measure. That it was only a matter of time before she knocked our socks off with the truth of who she was and what she was capable of...

"You belong here, Alice. Because you belong to me."

Which brings us to Georg Kivistö. He knew all about being between rocks and hard places because life tended to put him there, again and again. The former Bruin king paid the ultimate price for a woman in his past, lost everything he ever thought he wanted, and, once again, was called upon to take the throne.

Georg tried to deny what his bear already knew when it came to the intriguing human woman he couldn't stop thinking about. She was stronger than she first appeared, continually enticed him with her scent and her beauty, as well as her joy and wonder at the world, while also pulling at his heart with her loneliness, need, and pain...

I met Georg at the start of this series, and the more I knew of him, the more I wanted to know. At the risk of being repetitious, I adored him in this book. I mean, what's not to love about a fierce, powerful, sexy, and intelligent man (who also turns into a huge freakin' bear that can kick serious ass and take off heads? Hey, he gives warnings... sometimes...), who listens, comforts, supports, totally loves up, has respect for and protects his heroine? Sure, he makes some mistakes along the way (they both do), but when all is said and done, he owns his mistakes and does everything in his power to rectify them for love of Alice.

He believed in her. And I believed in him.

...that’s what love does really-it makes you more yourself.

So, in summary:

Love. Magic. Shifters. Life. Forests. Bears. Wonder. Castles. Prisons. Sand. Margaritas. Witches. Royalty. Sex. Myths. Monsters. Tears. Books. Prejudice. Cheshire Cat. Battles. Separation. Betrayal. Acceptance. Laughter. Growth. Potions. Family. Loss. Friends. Medeine. Power. Memories. Secrets. Freedom. Revelations. Pocket watch. CHOICES.

It's all about choices... and sometimes the ones we make (or don't) break our hearts. The rock and the hard place often shows up when it matters most. The crossroads are inevitable on life's journey. And we learn, we grow, and we carry on as we must in hopes that the story will reveal its meaning and take us where we need to go.

So, as Alice discovers, we need to know who we are in order to determine what matters most to us, to take a stand for what we believe in, to embrace our own power and purpose, and to choose our response to whatever life throws at us. Because sometimes how we respond is the only choice we have.

And, truth be told, we all want a better story, don't we?

I have truly enjoyed this magical Toil & Trouble journey (Many thanks, Ms. Blair) and must admit that I am sad to have reached the finish line, but somewhere deep inside, I don't believe it's really the end for all these wonderful characters. In fact, I like to imagine that for them, it is just the beginning of many more adventures of life and love together...

Smiling, I trail the tips of [my] fingers over his palm, still thinking of the paths we take, both the ones we choose and the ones we don’t.
“I didn’t know how lost I was until you found me,” I murmur, half to myself.
He steps closer, bringing his free hand to my face. “I didn’t know what I was searching for until I looked up and there you were."

I want to live in Heather R Blair's head. I know for a fact, I'd never be bored. Take, for example, A Curious Twist of Lime. I've been waiting a long time for Georg's story—ever since I first met him in Sixpence & Whiskey (Toil & Trouble Book 1). I had no idea what to expect, I just knew I was going to love it, because HELLO, this is Heather R Blair. But as much as I knew I'd enjoy it, I also should have remembered that Heather never fails to surprise me. Like a twist of lime, this story had one I didn't see coming.
Though there was a lot of dastardly deeds afoot, at its heart is the love story between Georg and Alice. And reading their story unfold, I fell in love with Georg and gained a lot of respect for Alice. Some cameos from a few key players were a bonus, too.
And while I'm sad to see the series end, I'm also happy in knowing I can go back at any time and immerse myself in the vividly wonderful world of FTCs that Heather R Blair created.

Please read this series in order!!! Start with Sixpence and Whiskey.
Do not jump ahead.
Proceed with caution. Possible spoilers.

I've been waiting and hoping for Georg's story and happy ending since book 1. Finally it's here but did it live up to my expectations?

Georg was adorable. He was back from the dead and determined to move on. He lands in a bit of trouble and is busy rethinking his thirst for adventure. If he makes it out alive, again, he plans to end this journey of self discovery.

Alice is his saviour and that was a wonderful scene because it sets the tone for their relationship. They stand by each other, protect, defend and save their partner from any threats.

The list of threats is seemingly endless. Court intrigue, assassination attempts, convenient accidents, a hunter, nightmares and monsters of every form.

Georg was warm, sweet, protective, strong, caring with a strong sense of duty. He followed his instincts, ruled with compassion and had adapted to the New Supernatural world. Georg was the bridge connecting the Russian bruins to the modern world.

Alice was innocent, caring, resilient, scared and hopeful all at the same time. She wanted to be brave and take control of her own story.
Shre has been trapped in this nightmare for a long time. Most of her memories are gone and she longs for freedom.

Both of them know pain intimately. Georg suffered because of unrequited love, Alice was imprisoned and lonely. They were separated from all they knew and loved, forced to make a fresh start.

Time is running out and they must identify their enemies before disaster strikes. But will new beginnings drive these two apart?

Heather has built a dark, dazzling world with complex characters. Nothing is as it seems and the twists never stop coming.

Hoping for a festive novella with all the characters from the Toil and Trouble series. I'm going to miss them and I have a feeling that I wont be the only one.

4-4.25 stars. This was a good book! I am so sad it's the last book of the series. This is Georg and Alice's book. Georg is a bruin shifter and a former king that we met in previous books in the series. He escaped death, is a little bitter over what happened to him and feeling at loose ends. When he least expects it, he meets Alice. She has been kidnapped and kept captive in a crumbling castle in the woods since she was a child. The two feel an immediate connection and Alice decides to escape her captivity for good by asking for Georg's help. Meanwhile, the bruin king is dying and Georg has been summoned as a candidate to be the next king. I don't want to share too much so I don't spoil anything, but the two face some challenges in life and love but come through it all happy together.

I loved Alice and Georg together. I was happy to see Georg find his soulmate after everything he had gone through in previous books in the series. Alice was sweet and innocent, but also strong when it counted. Georg was protective and adored Alice so much. They were a great match and an awesome couple. I loved the story in the book. I enjoyed the elements of Alice in Wonderland added in, but also that it was not a direct retelling and fit into the series culture and worldbuilding. This book was just such a fun, romantic, sweet and mysterious book.

Overall, this was such a great read! The Toil and Trouble series has been one of my favorite paranormal series ever. I have loved the fairytale characters, worldbuilding, and the romance. I am so sad to see it end. I will continue to recommend this series to everyone and I can't wait to see what Ms. Blair comes up with next!

Since his death, and subsequent reversal of said death, Georg Kivistö has become a wanderer. Looking for a purpose, or somewhere to belong now that his entire life has changed, he ends up visiting a shadowy world where there is nothing but odd monsters,  nature that fights back... and one enigmatic woman...

Alice Liddell has been imprisoned for a very long time. On the eve of a the day that her life is finally set to change, she saves the life of a bear who might just be her key to finally escaping her confinement. But the bear is actually a man, or a bruin, who has a very important place to be and Alice decides that anywhere is a better alternative to where she already is... especially if her companion makes her feel as safe as Georg does, simply by existing...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As a reader of the Toil & Trouble series, I have had a serious soft spot for Georg since the very beginning, and A Curious Twist of Lime FINALLY delivers with a formidable heroine for the growly, territorial and sweet-as-it-gets former bruin king.
Alice was locked up in a faraway world as a very young girl by a man who she only knows as master. With books as her only real companions, she has a very sheltered, yet   precarious existence. And then Georg appears and she finally has a means to escape her dreary life. Brough to his world of bruins, castles and court life, she finds that fitting in is an impossible task, and yet Georg remains by her side as her self appointed protector.
Georg was once a minor bruin king of the new world, but after a complicated situation, he is now left without a purpose or real home of his own. Called to the court of the highest king, ruler of all of the bruins, he is asked to take his rightful spot as heir to the throne. Already unsure of his desire to rule again, his incredible attraction to Alice has him finally feeling like he has found a small sliver of what he has been missing for so long. But, Alice is a human, and his people despise everything about her kind.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A Curious Twist of Lime is a book that completely tangled me up, made me weep and then warmed my heart all at the same time. Suspenseful, intriguing and utterly unforgettable, the impossible love story of Alice and Georg was paranormal romance perfection.

Alice starts out as a naive young woman who has no useful knowledge of the outside world. Entering the bruin court, she is immediately judged as inconsequential and beneath them. Taking it upon herself to grow and learn, Alice slowly finds herself as more than a captive. She is definitely not what she seems, and with a little time, Alice proves just what a formidable woman she really is.

Georg is someone we have all loved and felt for, and then missed incredibly when he lost a treacherous battle at the beginning of the series. Having him back was already a fantastic surprise, but getting to know him even more in this book was the best thing ever. He is fierce and protective, and with the softest underbelly for those he loves. Alice is such a unique match for what we thought we already knew about the bruin, but their love story brings with it everything that Georg never knew he needed.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.

I was so sad to read the end this series. Georg's story wasn't what I expected, nor was his mate. I quickly fell in love with the h in the story and felt like her journey from victim to strong, determined, heroine is what made this story. Anything written by Ms. Bair is always a treat! She has such skill weaving each element into a fantastical ride for the reader. Enjoy!

Amazing!!!
This book (and this whole series) are so masterfully written, weaving fairy tales and mythology into the everyday world. It makes a reader believe that maybe there is a little bit of magic in the real world and the characters that we've read about might truly exists.
I had a soft spot for Georg, the king of the bruins, since book one so to see him finally find his true mate and happily ever after made me so happy.

OMG!!! I'm so in love with this book!!

I was a little heart broken with everything that happen to Georg early on in the series, so when I found out this book was in the making I was really excited.

Georg finally gets his story told all the way thru. Alice makes a great addition to Georg. We all have that one person in live that comes along and you just know. For Georg it's Alice.

Great job Heather!!!
Yet again you have gone above and beyond.

What an amazing end to the series! I absolutely loved this world that has been created, and this story was just as incredible as the previous books. Brilliant writing, intriguing plot, smoking hot chemistry, and a love story to cheer for! I one hundred percent fell hard for this story. I can't recommend this series enough. I know I'll be rereading these books for years to come. If you're looking for a series with smart, strong heroines, brooding and sexy heroes, with amazing fantasy and paranormal aspects, and sharp writing, then this is a series you don't want to miss!

Nope.

As a huge Alice fan, I loved the premise--what happens when Alice gets out of wonderland? And then there was that line about her having survived for so long and not being pathetic. But the way she and Georig are characterized is inconsistent and frustrating.

The plot this time around is pretty politicized and the ultimate conflict being us versus *everyone* tiring.
