**AUDIOBOOK REVIEW**

Okay kids, hang on to your butts...Amy is about to review her very first Audiobook!

After years of not being able to get into Audiobooks I've been wanting to try my hand at them again, and my decision came just in time for the release of The Tory by the awesome writer, T.J. London!

It. Was. The. Best. Decision. Ever!

I read The Tory in 2018 and was absolutely blown away by London's writing and her knowledge of the time. It's totally apparent when reading her books or following her online that she is super passionate about what she writes and that shows through in her books. It was super fun to snuggle in my bed at night with my new soft AF blanket after a long day of work and homeschooling two little ones and get lost in the read. It actually provided a better escape than reading a paperback because I could put my headphones on and block out the world.

It was so much fun hearing T.J. London's world and characters brought to life!

T.J. London sure knows how to keep a reader's heart racing - between the action and the hot sexy scenes there is not a dull moment.

The Revolutionary period isn't one that is written about much in Historical Fiction - or at least widely published - and I think that's a real shame. This is one of the reasons why I love reading Indie books. You will find the BEST books ever! I literally shake my head in wonder and try to figure out how publishing houses pass some of these books up, especially this series!

The hunk-hunk-a-man John Carlisle is played by Audiobook narrator veteran Shane East, Tara Langella fabulous plays my favorite character, Dellis, Marnye Young voices the scandalous Celeste, and Patrick Zeller rocked it as Roger Delancie.

Since this is my first Audiobook I don't have anything to compare it to, but I found that the voice actors were a perfect match for their characters. They managed to keep my attention throughout. London writes some fabulous dialogue and there are quite a few LOl moments due to the author's talent for snark :)

If you haven't read The Rebels and Redcoats series yet and you don't mind your reads on the racy side, I highly encourage you to pick up The Tory in Audio or paperback! They are both phenomenal!

I think my second Audiobook is going to be the next book in the series, The Traitor! I cannot wait!

I had a really good time with this audiobook! I have to admit that this audiobook grabbed my attention once I saw the list of narrators. Once I read the description, I knew that I wanted to give it a try. My attention span has been rather limited in recent months so I was a bit worried that I would have some trouble staying focused on a 15-hour audiobook but this book had no problems holding my interest. I am really glad that I decided to give this book a try.

I don't think that I have read all that many books set during this time period and I did enjoy seeing Captain John Carlisle navigate his way in America. I liked John but I found Dellis to be the highlight of this story. Dellis was such a capable woman who has been dealt a bad hand but has not given up. I did like the connection that she felt with John. I wasn't quite as sure about John at the start of the story but he really grew on during the course of the story.

I was hooked by the story. A lot is going on in this book and I really found all of the aspects of the story to be important to the bigger picture. I found the book to be rather exciting and I found myself wondering how things would work out for each of the characters. I thought that the romantic element of the story was well done and felt very authentic. My only real complaint is that I had hoped to see things wrapped up a bit more. I really didn't feel like there was any real resolution at the close of this book.

The narration was very well done. This is a fabulous cast of narrators and I think that they all did a phenomenal job with this story. Shane East and Tara Langella did the bulk of the narration but it was always fun to hear one of the other two voices. I thought that their reading added a lot of excitement to the story and was able to bring this book to life. I do feel that the narration added to my overall enjoyment of this story.

I would recommend this book to others. This was an exciting story filled with wonderful characters that were easy to care about. I cannot wait to see what happens next to Dellis and John.

I received a digital audiobook review copy of this book from Caffeinated PR.

4.5 Stars: This book was published back in 2018, but the audiobook was just released in August. I have read many books dealing with the lead up, the actual events and the aftermath of various wars, but I believe this is the first dealing with the Revolutionary War. Now, being Canadian, and supporters of the British during this war, I was quite interested in the sound of this one. Well, I was not disappointed. This book deals with the backdoor deals, the corruption and the attempts to get the Native Americans to support one side or the other. There is some very difficult scenes to read about rape, murder and scalping, but they are done in a way that is realistic to the time and events. It is obvious that a lot of research went into this story.

The characters, events, plot, dialogue and writing are all well done, pulling this reader into the story. The narration was excellent. The expression and inflection used by the various performers added much to the story. I was quite happy to listen to this book, even though at over 15 hours, it was not a quick listen. I don't think I would have enjoyed it nearly as much if I had read it. My only complaint is that this is the first in a series and I was left hanging. I am not sure when the second book in this series will be produced. I definitely recommend this one to lovers of Historical Fiction, especially US history. I was gifted a copy of this book upon request, the rating and opinions are my own.

I was enjoying the story and the audiobook was wonderful with its four different narrators, but it's 1 of 3 continuing books and the violence was a bit too much for me. I would have kept with this first one, but thinking about two more books plus a prequel at over 500 pages each with the same kind of violence, I decided to cut my losses early. Just one of many examples: While I love an author with great imagery in their writing, the graphic visuals of violence in this one exceed my emotional brain space.

It has been an age since I read or listened to a story set in the Colonial-Revolutionary War period, but it took no persuading at all for me to take up this first in a saga by a new to me author when I saw the promise of a stunning tale in the blurb. Between superb narration work, a tumultuous authentic-feeling plot, and richly drawn characters The Tory continues to resonate inside me well after I finished.

The Tory opens with British officer, John Carlisle, prepared to do what it takes to restore his honor and his officer's commission that was removed when he was implicated in a situation in the volatile American colonies. In the guise of a war profiteer, he sets up in New York's Mohawk Valley at a inn run by an Oneida woman, Dellis, who captivates him as her heartwrenching story comes to light and they form a tie that deepens as time goes by. He learns what he needs to know, but that was the easy part. His heart is now engaged and it is pulling him in another direction from his original plan, but he has learned the situation is complex and much bigger than one officer's restoration or the love of one woman- what he chooses to do will affect nations and war.

The Tory is a story that grabbed me up into its world from the opening chapter and it took hold of my emotions for the whole tempestuous ride. It was graphic at times and didn't pull any punches about the raw world of the American frontier. The author wrote the larger pictures around John and Dellis' story with balance and understanding of the times and people. The action, suspense, twists, colorful characters- and some famous ones- carefully built romance, and larger series arc were absolutely fabulous.

John Carlisle was not a character who endeared himself to me at first. It wasn't just his plan to infiltrate and spy and eventually set up the Oneida tribe, but his immature character. However, over the course of the story, he learned, he showed more facets to himself, and I felt like I was right there with him.

Dellis was half-Scottish half-Oneida. She has lost much and is now stepping out of a traditional role to take care of herself as well as a brother with issues who can't care for himself. She is intelligent and strong to face what she must. I appreciated her and was engaged with her character from the beginning. I loved when she and John were in scenes together. Their connection and sizzling chemistry leaped to life for me.

As to other characters, wow, even secondary characters whether good or cunningly working their own agendas, were colorful and entertaining.

The plot is full without overflowing into too much. The situation and historical backdrop are rich and full, the action is described in a way that is a sensory experience, and the connection between characters and reader/listener to book is tight.

I must pause here to give warning that there are some gruesome moments in this book. Nothing will prove to one just how much more audio brings to a story than something like this. I think I could have read about a scalping with a small cringe, but listening? It took me a bit to shake that picture loose. So, expect a rough, raw world and not a gentle rosy story, but what is painted out is not gratuitous or simple titillation; it is necessary to the story.

Four sensational narrators had the work of bringing The Tory to audio life. As soon as each took the reins, I saw masterful performances with the characters. I thought they all did due diligence to their characters and captivated my imagination with their audio work.

In summary, I was thoroughly pulled into the Rebels and Redcoats world so that I sat after the cliffhanger ending and could only mourn that I was thrust back into real life. I can't wait to see what comes next. Historical Fiction lovers and those who don't mind a more tumultuous historical romance set during a time of action and war and drawn with amazing authenticity should definitely grab this one.

My thanks to Caffeinated PR and The Audio Flow for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was so excited for the audiobook because a friend told me about it. I ended up downloading the ebook sample because I couldn't wait, which then lead me to purchase the full book because I just could not put it down. I completely devoured it because I was so taken in by the writing, the way the story was told and all of the amazing characters. There are scenes that will make you cry, get angry, feel scared and even a few that will make your heart melt. It's definitely what I would call an epic level story.

I was given the opportunity to listen to an advance copy of the audiobook. Let me tell you this, I was absolutely blown away by the audio performance. Coming into this audio, I had heard prior performances by only one of the 4 narrators. I knew the caliber to expect from one of them, but the others were new to me. Every single one of them was outstanding! They all were able to bring T.J.'s characters to life. Trust me, you're gonna want to buy this audiobook.

Thanks to author T.J. London and blog tour host Amy Bruno of HF Virtual Book Tours for allowing me to take part in the blog tour and providing me copies of the books. The cover art for both of these books was amazing. I have been on a historical fiction kick for awhile now and these books did not disappoint. I haven't read many during the American Revolutionary time period so this was interesting to me.

The story begins with Lieutenant John Carlisle, a skilled map maker wishing to win back his commission by working undercover to find out the relationship between the Iroquois and the Colonial Army. John sets up his headquarters at the inn of a half-breed woman, Dellis McKesson, our heroine. Dellis' tragic past is linked to John's and he tries to trick the tribe into a peace treaty with Britain.

I loved both of these extremely well-written books. The research that went into them was evident. The two main characters were complex and realistic. The pacing was spot-on and held my interest throughout. Fans of historical fiction with a dash of romance are sure to enjoy this series. I can't wait for the story to continue in Spring 2019 with The Turncoat, book #3 in the Rebels and Redcoats Saga.

Review copy was received from Publicity team. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I don't read much historical fiction other than fantasy. Often times with historical fiction, I then want to know what really happened.  The Tory is easier in that the Revolutionary War is one of my favorite time periods to read and most of the characters are not real people other than the leaders of the armies.  However, I do wonder about who the native Americans supported and what happened to them.  Obviously, the Americans won and did not treat natives well.

I liked the main couple. John has had a tough go of things.  He did work hard and ended up in a bad situation.  It was heartbreaking to see everything go wrong at every turn for him.  While he is not perfect, he tried to do the right thing in the past and now, but others use him.

Dellis has an even worse situation.  With her parents dead, she has no one looking out for her.  Her brother is a burden rather than a help.   Her native relatives are more respectful and caring to her, but it seems as though her father's Scotch relatives are not only not helping but likely cheating her.  I hate how her Uncle James treats her and steals from her. Dellis is kind, a healer, and compassionate to others.  She does not want her native community to get involved with the war between the Americans and the British.  She is the most honest and hardworking person in the story and in a most precarious position.

I am worried about so many of my favorite characters. John and Dellis are in such danger and there is so much to hurt them and make their lives worse.   It feels like the liars and thieves get too much of their way.   Who is the Tory?  It's not John, as he is a British national, not an American colonist.  I was more caught up in the relationships than the politics.  There are so many liars and secret keepers, including John and Dellis.   I want John to succeed but I can't be an advocate of the British.  So maybe John can support the natives? But will Dellis accept his part in the sad events two years earlier?

The Tory is excellent in its harsh and violent story, jerking my emotions in all ways.  I am afraid to have any hope as I go forward reading The Traitor, which is next in the Rebels & Redcoats Saga .

Narration:
I really enjoyed all the narration.  Shane East is a favorite narrator. Luckily for me,  he narrates a large portion of the book.  The other narrators are new to me.  The performance is very well done.  The voices seem fitting for the different regions and accents.  I was able to listen at my normal 1.5x speed.

Nooooooooooo! Don't make me wait months for Book 2!

I love historical romances, but haven't read many set in the American Revolutionary War period. I used to love visiting historical sites as a kid, so I wanted to give this book a shot. Our hero John wasn't a hero in the beginning in any way, shape or form. He was quite pitiful, actually. But then he is given a second chance in life, and thus begins his redemption.

Dellis was an awesome heroine! She and her schizophrenic brother were the children of a Scots father and an Oneida Indian mother. Both were lost in tragic ways, leaving Dellis to run an inn to support herself and her brother. Though Dellis had been through hell and back, she was no wilting violet. She was a healer and a proud woman of her tribe. John and his men, on a mission, take accommodations in Dellis's inn. Then the story really takes off.

This story isn't perfect. There were times I had trouble keeping track of who was who, which tribes supported the Crown or the Colonials, and things such as that. However, there was intrigue, danger, excitement, suspense and yes, romance and chemistry. In other words, all the things that grab me and hold onto me in a book. Though I hated to end this book on a cliffhanger, it by no means ruined my enjoyment of it. In fact, I am impatiently awaiting the next installment!

This is truly outstanding. I purchased the audiobook version which includes Part 1 & Part 2 (I'm not finished part 2 yet). T.J. London's writing style is wonderfully immersive which leaves you enjoying every minute of her story. Her understanding of the time period is also exceptional. I felt like I was right there in history watching those scenes unfold before me through the voices of the multi-cast narration. A full round of applause to Shane East, Tara Langella, Marnye Young and Patrick Zeller for their stellar performances.
I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more of TJ London's work.

Updating my rating from 4 to 5 stars after a 2nd audio listen. This might be my 2nd or 3rd read in this time period that I remember and it's just very unique. Especially with the characters and narrators. They all did a great job. I have next 2 audios already downloaded and am looking forward to read more about these characters.

The Tory
Rebels and Redcoats Saga #1
T. J. London

T. J. London’s first in her Rebels and Redcoats saga, The Tory is an exceptional novel full of darkness, violence, loss of innocence and betrayal, but it’s also full of light, love and hope. London doesn’t pull any punches describing the depravities and the violence but it’s clear that she does so for story believability and with care and not for shock value. T.J.’s storytelling mastery shows throughout the novel but especially as she unpeels the many layers of Dellis and John, they are outstanding, credible and likeable, even though at times the audience will want to throttle John (well at least I did). Her research into customs, clothing and happenings during the time of the Revolutionary War is evident from page one to the jaw dropping cliffhanger end and in every realistic scene end and her characters good bad and in between are genuine and convincing leaving readers craving book #2, The Traitor which is happily available now in print and digital format.
Fans of Diana Gabaldon and Genevieve Graham will devour this novel.

NARRATION:
The narrators: Patrick Zeller, Marnye Young, Tara Langella, and Shane East knock this out of the park, they each play their roles perfectly and the listening audience will be kept on their toes while feeling every bit of pain and pleasure and every emotion these brilliant actors emote giving listeners a more in depth story experience.

Captain John Carlisle spends his days in his cups and his nights reliving the horrendous attack that cost him his reputation and his commission in the English Army. So in 1776 when he’s afforded the opportunity to restore his tarnished character by going undercover to spy for His Majesty’s Army he jumps at the chance. But when it puts him back where his fall from grace happened two years prior and in close proximity to a bewitching woman that’s past is connected to his he finds himself wondering where his loyalties really lie.

Dellis McKesson has lost much in her short life, both her parents and her innocence and reputation to a violent attack and because of the attack and now being soiled her fiancé. So she refuses to lose the only thing she has left of her parents by turning her childhood home into an inn and tavern against her uncle’s wishes. The attack has left her understandably skittish around men but when a handsome stranger shows up wanting to trade with her mother’s people, the Oneida she feels something she never thought she could feel, desire.
Now she has to decide can she trust him with her people and with her heart.

(audiobook) I am NOT a historical romance reader, so I was seriously worried I wouldn’t enjoy this book. I was mistaken. I loved it.

I’m not familiar with this era, so I have to trust the author for the acuracy of all the details–society, politics and everyday life. Yet I felt like I was there. You get a feel of what it was like to live there and then, and the various life experiences depending on your origins.

Because colonialism was a thing back then, expect a copious amount of xenophobia–or fetishism, of course. And don’t forget some misogyny. It didn’t bother me at all. It helped define the characters and their motivations too.

The whole plot was just enough complicated to create a gripping story, while not being too confusing. It linked the big History–the war–and the more personal intrigues of the characters through a convincing web of alliances, revenge plans and selfish greed.

The romance is only a tiny piece of the whole story, but I really loved the passion simmering right from the beginning and how it evolved.

With such a story–with multiple point of views–an audiobook with more than two narrators seemed obvious, and the cast was perfect. The accents of the various characters, as well as the delivery of all the powerful emotions, made this audiobook more like a movie without images. An absolute must read/listen.

Quickie

- Series: The rebels and redcoats sage #1 (you could stop here, but not everything is resolved)
- Hashtags: #historical romance #historical fiction #American Revolutionary War #colonialists #rebels #Native Americans
- Triggers: graphic depiction of multiple war crimes (rape, murder, torture), era acurate racism
- Main couple: Dellis McKesson & John Carlisle
- Hotness: 2/5
- Romance: 3/5
- + the accents! so many accents!
- – I had trouble believing in Dellis’s amazing medical skills at her young age

The Tory is book One of the Rebels and Redcoats saga by T.J. London. If you love historical fiction mixed with a little spice, this is series worth picking up.
The accuracy of the area, events and people are on point, the author takes her Revolutionary War facts serious. Many events take place in German Flatts, NY, which is local for me- her description is so detailed and appreciated.
The story is a slow burn, and prepare yourself for the long game with this series. It's covered in several books, but the character development is absolutely worth it.
This is my second read, so I used Audible to listen in as I drove and cleaned- the narrators did a perfect job, Dellis and John's voices are exactly as I pictured. I would recommend the audiobook!
John is a morally grey, tortured man, and I cannot wait to dive into his story more. Dellis, she's broken and I love that John is starting to put her back together,... except it's all built on lies- so prepare for devastation.
This was my immediate vision of John- and I cannot be convinced otherwise

I had an amazing time with this audiobook! The narrators' lineup immediately caught my attention, and the description sealed the deal. Captain John Carlisle's journey in America was intriguing, but Dellis stole the show with her resilience and capability. The story was exciting, and every element felt crucial to the bigger picture. The romance felt genuine, and the narration by an exceptional cast brought the book to life. I highly recommend this thrilling audiobook filled with captivating characters. I can't wait to see what happens next to Dellis and John.

I cannot rave enough about the exceptional narration in this audiobook brought to life by an incredible cast of narrators. Shane East, Tara Langella, Patrick Zeller, and Marnye Young delivered an outstanding performances that elevated the entire experience. Each narrator brought unique talents to the table, infusing the characters with depth, emotion, and authenticity. Shane East's voice commanded attention and perfectly captured the essence of the protagonist. Tara Langella's narration was captivating, with her ability to convey strength and vulnerability. Patrick Zeller's voice resonated with power and intensity, keeping me on the edge of my seat. Marnye Young's narration was a delightful surprise, adding an extra layer of charm and charisma. The chemistry between the narrators was palpable, creating a seamless and immersive listening experience. Their expressive deliveries and impeccable timing breathed life into every scene, making me feel I was alongside the characters. It was a joy to listen to their voices, and they truly enhanced my enjoyment of the story. If you're an audiobook enthusiast, this is a cast of narrators that you do not want to miss. Their talent and passion shine through every word, making this audiobook delight. Kudos to Shane East, Tara Langella, Patrick Zeller, and Marnye Young for their exceptional performances that made this audiobook an unforgettable experience.

Where to begin.

Authenticity
Historical accuracy
Atmosphere
Character profiling
Chemistry

Breaking it down.

The authenticity of this story, is off the charts. I can not compare it to much, because it follows its own path and has this unique quality to it. It was fresh and new to me, reading fiction set in this era, this war, this region. The plot was unpredictable, which made page turning feverish for me.

Historical accuracy was on point. This book took some serious work. As a historian, I can really appreciate the hours of research and dedication to the truth, that T.J. London put into this story. For a historical romance to be this well considered was like finding gold. From slang to mapping, to events, this was well done.

I also have to say that the appearance of beloved historical figures was beyond exciting. I also feel they are fairly and well represented.

Atmosphere was vivid and detailed but not so much that I felt like napping or skimming. The author trusts your imagination by giving you just enough description with room for thought. She is not telling, she is showing. The land, the rooms, the village all feel real to me.

Character profiling, A+. Not ONE character is unnecessary or purposeless. Each one feels multi-level deep, and each carries a story of their own.

The protagonist is someone with a voice you want to follow. Someone you care about/are intrigued with from page one on. The antagonist is scary AF and instead of an author holding our hand, saying “this was a bad bad man”, T.J.London SHOWS us, this is a seriously bad bad man. The proof is in the actions not just the words and I felt the things I needed to feel.

Chemistry...

Chemistry, anyone?
Yes?

Then read Dellis and John in this book. Because from the moment they first encounter one another to the last sentence of the last page, these two have overwhelmingly REAL chemistry.

Their romance is a slow burn, because it isn’t frivolous. It feels believable and organic. The wait is worth the reward, that’s all I can say.

**I will add this little note. The book is violent, sexual, and gritty. Is the above necessary to the plot? YES. It is well placed and validated. We can’t blind side history to suit what we want to believe. There are stories to be told even in the darker things. Yes, the book is gritty, but this was a gritty time in our history.

There are triggers in this book but we read to have an experience and to feel. And life comes with no trigger warnings. This is a raw read, meant to make you feel, so don’t read it if you prefer one-dimensional, rose colored glasses.

This book is definitely a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read. Brilliantly executed! I will 100% be following and reading more from this author!

Just wow. Where to start, this is my first experience with T.J. London's work and I can say without any hesitation, I will one-click every single work from this author from here on out. The Tory was extremely well written and accurate for the period. The attitudes weren't in line with much of the watered down, politically correct pieces I have been reading and I found it to be incredibly refreshing. The story was fast paced without extra fluff, very descriptive, and intricately built. There's really no one way to describe it because it's action packed, suspenseful, dramatic, filled with sexual tension and romance, and themes still so relevant for current times. The author's voice is easy to read, making it entirely possible to completely lose yourself in it. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in this series. This book (and likely series) will be one I re-read regularly. Highly recommend to anyone who loves a deep story.

I really enjoyed this book, devouring it poolside over the better part of a weekend. So enthralled, I couldn't hardly stand the few hours I was forced to await the delivery of the rest of the trilogy after finishing. There are a lot of editorial errors - and the glue in my paperback actually failed to withstand the heat (I had several pages fall out) - but I am willing to overlook them. If you have an interest in historical fiction, the revolutionary war, the colonial frontier, Native life, romance, and the like, then this is for you. The biggest drawbacks are the very black & white characters (the bad guys are sooooo bad) and the repetition. While there is no time travel, I can't help but liken it a bit to OUTLANDER, with all of the violence and hints at he magical/mystical - and the length. Still, warts and all, I really enjoyed it! easy 4+ stars

THE TORY BY T.J. LONDON
Publication Date: April 11, 2018
Peperback & eBook; 517 Pages

Series: The Rebels and Redcoats Saga, Book #1
Genre: Historical Fiction

It is the winter of 1776, and Captain John Carlisle, one of His Majesty’s not-so-finest, has gone back to the scene of the crime to right a wrong so dark it left a permanent stain on what was once an illustrious career and left a man broken, defeated, in search of justice…

In an effort to win back his commission, he must discover the true nature of the relationship between the Six Nations of the Iroquois and the Colonial Army. Undercover as a war profiteer, John travels to the treacherous Mohawk River Valley and infiltrates local society, making friends with those he’s come to betray.

But a chance meeting with a beautiful half Oneida innkeeper, whose tragic history is integrally linked to his own, will provide him with the intelligence he needs to complete his mission—and devastate her people.

Now, as the flames of war threaten to consume the Mohawk Valley, John has the chance to not only serve King and country, but to clear his name. When the truth he uncovers ties his own secrets to those in the highest positions of the British military and threatens the very life of the woman he’s come to love, he will be forced to make a choice…

“The pages fly as you immerse yourself in this fantastic adventure.” – RT Book Review

MY REVIEW

At first I was slightly hesitant about reading this book, at least for the time being, as I am in the process of writing my own novel set during the American Revolution. However, once I determined that the subject matter for The Tory was sufficiently different from mine, my reticence disappeared. Besides, the author and I share hometowns, so how could I say no.  :-)

I  was riveted to this tale from the beginning; a different look at the Revolution, one that takes place on the frontier and features the involvement of the Iroquois Confederacy; especially the tribe that sided with the colonists, The Oneida. I can't say enough about the emotional suffering, mental anguish, and physical trauma that the two main protagonists endure in this tense drama. There are many sub-plots that are seamlessly weaved into the narrative that highlight the very complicated, increasingly dangerous situation facing John and Dellis. It is, boys and girls, a page turning tale, though I did stop once in a while to catch my breath.  :-)  Meticulously researched, engaging subject matter, and best of all, a tale that will continue in the sequel, The Traitor, I think you will thoroughly enjoy The Tory.  5 Stars

When I seen this I could not help but want to check it out!

The story follows disgraced John Carlisle who has been given a second chance to redeem himself and prove his loyalty to the Crown but at what cost? He has to go back to where everything went wrong and were his demons hide. He goes back undercover to uncover the relationship between the Six Nations of the Iroquois and the Colonial Army. He meets the beautiful innkeeper who also has a tragic past that unknowingly is linked to John's.

This was an intense listen. The narrators were awesome and had me needing to listen to more and more. I could not put this down! I had to know what was going to happen next.

Everyone has secrets and not everything is black and white. The author did a fantastic job showing this. Even our baddie cannot be simply summed up. He is certainly evil....but he isn't all there either from what I can see. It made it a really interesting read for sure because you really don't know what anyone is capable of. Loyalty is fragile.

Poor John. Poor Dellis. I am rooting for them but it is not at all an easy romance especially when the truth comes out. They both have their demons...especially John. It did take me a few to get actually like John...but I feel like that was the point. He is a scoundrel and rake and likes to drink and be in business with a prostitute. It was nice seeing him grow up and find love in his heart. He's not all the way there yet, but he is really redeeming himself.

Ooooo I can't wait for book 2! This left off with such a big cliffhanger!!! I need to know what happens next! There is something big coming and I feel like not everyone is going to survive this.

This is a dark world at times so just be warned there are some...dark scenes and some are a hair gruesome (ignore my bad pun here). They don't last long and that made me happy, but it is necessary to really get you into the world and see that it was for sure the Wild West before the actual Wild West. War is a nasty business.

Overall, I really, really liked this book. The narrators were fantastic and the story kept me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait for book 2!! I'll stamp this with 5 stars.

*****AUDIOBOOK REVIEW*****
5 Gripping Stars!!!

When I first started reading several years ago, a big part of my reading was historical fiction and I loved every page of them. Of course, a lot of the stories were liberally embellished because, it’s still a romance book. But with The Tory, we’re truly getting a history lesson. It’s the Winter of 1776 and Captain John Carlisle as narrated by the amazing Shane East is in a quandary. He’s on a mission to clear his name, but so many other lives hang in the balance with how he proceeds. Least of which is Dellis as narrated by Tara Langella. This woman is strong and has a past that is unimaginable.

I was completely captivated by this story not only because of the excellent narration but with the way Ms. London wove this story. I found myself sad when I had to stop listening for work because I was so in the moment with her vivid descriptions in each and every scene. There’s an attention to detail that is a must in a story like this and I truly felt I had a bird’s eye view to what was happening to each character. This is a true saga in the best way possible. It’s not only about the Colonial-Revolutionary War but also a slow burning love story that is somewhat dictated by societal standards. Having said this, Dellis is a woman that goes against the norms with how she lives her life a lot of which she has lost and she’s determined to not lose more!

There’s so much I could say about this rich historical novel but it is truly one you need to experience for yourself. It’s enthralling from the very first words spoken to the last. Even if you don’t necessarily like history, this book will make you change your mind it’s just that good. It doesn’t feel like a “history lesson.” It’s a story that ebbs and flows as happens in the war and as John Carlisle gets to restore his name and commission we get a richly told story that is history and love story in one phenomenal book!!

Audiobook review: This book was sooooo good. I’m not normally one to listen to or read historical anything but I am a fan now. TJ London is a new to me author but she has earned herself a new fan in me.

The narration was beyond amazing. Three of the four were new to me narrators but they all did such an amazing job. I became so invested in all the aspects of the story and now I’m counting down the days until I can listen to the next book.

Bravo Ms. London. Very well done.

(4.5 ⭐️) - I am SO glad this was recommended to me because I likely never would have discovered it. I had so much fun with this book & I can’t wait to read the rest of the series! This would be perfect for someone who doesn’t typically read or like historical fiction, or who has never tried it. It was so exciting, full of adventure, scheming, action, romance, spice, history, secrets, it really has it all! So much happens in this story. You get a well-rounded view of the revolution from all POVs- the British, the rebels, & the Native Americans.

First I wish to introduce characters, so you might get some depth from the story.

John Carlisle aka John Anderson- John is many things, a hard hitting, hard drinking womanizer who likes his fill of scotch and loose women. But he is also a kind man with his own moral values. Good looking, tall, with blonde hair and blue eyes, women easily fall for his charm. He is a man full of grief over things he could not control, he is after all a soldier who must follow orders, but he refuses to be part of a cover up. This cost him his rank, but he is being sent on a secret mission, his one chance to redeem himself.

Dellis McKesson pronounced (Daylis ). Half Oneida & half Scottish owns a Inn which used to be her private home until her father was killed in a duel over the honor of his wife. Other relatives being slaughtered by redcoats, she now struggles to keep her business afloat so she doesn't loose her home. Dellis has lost much, her parents, her fiancé, and she is determined not to lose her home. Her Uncle The Duke Of McKesson built it as a wedding present for her parents, it's all she has left of them.

Stuart McKesson, some think a half wit, but the tribe thinks he hears spirits. Stuart is a drunk who has no love for anyone, even himself. He constantly degrades and dishonors his sister Dellis who takes care of him.

Alexei McKesson and Ruslan McKesson sons of James McKesson and cousins to Dellis. Both are members of the tribe even though their father hates anything native. Unlike Stuart they are respectful to women, but still want them kept in their place and out of man's business.

James McKesson, a horrible self serving man, who acts as if he has Dellis interest at heart, but reveals his true feelings with his own words and actions. All he really cares about is money and power. You could call him a sneak thief, with a good reputation, but it's all smoke and mirrors, he has the worst of intentions.

Celeste - a woman of means because she is willing to go as far as it takes to have what she wants. Partners in business with John Carlisle, and lover. She gets what she wants by the oldest profession in the world for a woman alone with nothing or no one. She knows how to use her body to get what she wants and has no shame in dong it.

Major DeLancie - a soldier in the Kings army with little in the way of morals and a chip on his shoulder put there by John Carlisle.

Eagle Eyes - a native and one of DeLancie's lackeys.

Auntie McKesson- married to James and mother of Alexei and Ruslan. Works at the Thistle with Dellis, seemingly she cares for her niece, but her husband is final word of law.

There are other characters but I think I covered the most relevant ones. This is a hard hitting story, but I must add a
Warning: for the squeamish this book contains torture, rape, and lots of violence. So if you object to reading those things , this isn't the story for you .
I enjoyed this story with it's twist and turns, acts of loyalty and betrayal, violent scenes do not upset me, they are a part of life and history, and I am a grown up.
All opinions are solely my own and have no ill intent towards the author, publisher, or promoters of this book.

AUDIBLE REVIEW:

OVERALL: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
PERFORMANCE: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
STORY: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

WOW, where to begin without giving away any spoilers....This story was magnificent with all the plot twists throughout the entire story!!

The characters were amazing!! Ed and I enjoyed getting to know each character and listening intently on how each character played a certain roll within the story. We could feel what the characters were feeling. They felt so very real.

The story-line was intriguing and kept us wanting to listen to more. It's no joke when I say that we listened to this 15 hour and 15 minute story in about 3 days because we just HAD to know what would happen next. And the way the author ended it...well it left us a bit deflated because we needed to know more!! London is a fantastic storyteller and she has gained two new followers and we are impatiently waiting for the next book.

The narrators were, I have no words for them!! They were remarkable and that's not even doing them justice. We loved their voice overs and they really made the story come to life. This is the first time that we have had the chance to listen to an audiobook with four narrators in it and OMG, they are for sure academy award winning narrators in my book!! Their voices along with the addicting plot twists kept us extremely entertained from beginning to end and has left us with some burning questions!! So we are desperate for book 2 and can't wait for its release!! Edson and I give this book a standing ovation to the author, the characters and the narrators for a splendid adventure and story.

DISCLAIMER: Due to graphic scenes and depictions of war, reader discretion is advised.

There is a lot to like about this book. First of all, it's set during the American Revolution and there is a sad lack of books set in that time period. I like that the book is from an unusual perspective. There's not a whole lot on this time frame from a British perspective and I think that made the book a bit more intriguing. I also liked the author's prose, the descriptive detail really brought me into the setting and though occasionally repetitive, it was never too much. The story is told from multiple perspectives and the author did a marvelous job making each character's voice distinct. Unfortunately, there were also things that didn't work for me. The villain was the biggest sticking point for me. I felt like a deeper back story was hinted at several times but never came through. Perhaps that is going to be a big reveal later in the series but lacking that he was just one dimensional to me. Evil for the sake of being evil. Also, many of the scenes with the villain were far to gruesome and violent for me, particularly in a book categorized as romance. The final thing that detracted from the book for me was the pseudonym chosen by the main character- John Anderson. This author obviously knows her history so the name choice perplexes me. That is the pseudonym used by Major John Andre when he was caught by the Continental Army. This character is obviously not Andre so why use that name? Perhaps this is some nerdy foreshadowing. If it is, I apologize to the author because that would be cool, although not really a great ending for romance. Anyway, everything else fit into the historical narrative well, so that historical change stuck out like a sore thumb.

Set in today's New England and Ontario in the 1776 Revolutionary war John Carlisle tells his story about how he becomes a military goal to an undercover map maker, as a supply merchant, for the intelligence of the Red Coats all while having nightmares of the past that put him in front of the court marshall.

Dellis is the innkeeper of The Thistle, her father's home that once was grand and inviting and the only thing she has left of her parents after the brutal attack a few years ago.

Dellis takes John around to the villages of her people to assist with getting them supplies for the winter that is swiftly coming, gaining trust and support is the final goal. The supplies have arrived and then are stolen, twice, making it harder on the villages to stay during the looming winter months. John goes on a mission to find out who and where the supplies have gone, as getting the villages to trust him are one of his top missions from the General.

The drama and adventure continue when John's business partner, Celest, turns up in the new town wanting to start up a new brothel all while his old Commander is trying to exact revenge for his treachery and betrayal a few years back.

I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a forbidden love story that takes you back in time and has some horrifically terrifying things happening among the English and Indian people. Very well written and the research was executed amazingly from the forts, villages, and the lady's dressing gowns.
