Two broken paths lead toward God’s redemption in the next installment of Robin Lee Hatcher’s Legacy of Faith series.
Ashley Showalter and Ben Henning have so much in common. Both were raised by single moms. Both want to help where they see a need. And both work with horses in the Boise valley. Ashley runs a horse rescue operation, while Ben has started an equine therapy barn on his great-great grandfather’s farm—and both Ashley and Ben have the feeling that there could be something more between them.
But they share something else that may drive them apart if the truth is ever revealed. Ben is a recovering alcoholic with ten years of sobriety behind him, while Ashley’s brother, Dylan, is an opioid addict, currently residing in court-ordered rehab. Ashley has promised herself she would never walk knowingly into the chaos created by addiction—because in her mind, addicts can never be fully cured. But with God, all things are possible. Will Ashley find it within herself to give love a chance, or will her brother’s mistakes jeopardize her future with Ben?

Once again after reading a Robin Lee Hatcher book I have come away feeling refreshed and renewed in faith and spiritual well being. This book is amazing! The characters held my attention and before I knew it I had read the whole book. This is the second book in the Legacy of Faith series. It is a time split novel and once again the family bible has a strong connection between past and present, what a wonderful idea! Ben has forgiven himself through his faith for a reckless time period when he was younger, his ex-best friend is bitter and does not have a strong faith and can not forgive him. Ben through his faith has turned his life around and now wants to give back to troubled and disadvantaged people through his equine program he has started on the farm he has inherited from his grandfather. Ashley Showalter is his contact person to get the process started. She doesn't have the room on her property to keep many horses but she rescues and rehabilitates them. After this Ben comes in and trains them for his equine program. These two tender hearts come together in partnership with the horses but can God bring them together for a lifetime partnership ? Sweet tender romance, the words flowed beautifully in this book!
Expected publication: June 25th 2019 by Thomas Nelson I was given a complimentary copy of this book. Thank you. All opinions expressed are my own.
Sweet blend of contemporary and historical threads. Although the historical thread was minor in comparison, it was an excellent complement to the contemporary thread. The historical story continues Andrew and Helen's story from book one is this series. The time period is 1941-1945 with WWII as a threat and then a reality. I loved hearing more of their story.
The main thread was also engaging. Ben, a recovering alcoholic, and Ashley, who has a brother addicted to alcohol and drugs, are drawn to each other because of their love for horses. Ben wants to create an equine therapy facility and Ashley rehabs rescue horses.
Lovely story. I look forward to continuing the series.
My gratitude to publisher Thomas Nelson for a complimentary copy (Goodreads giveaway) of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
Who I Am with You was the first book I've read by this author and quickly realised I came upon another gem in the Christian fiction world. So I never thought twice about getting book 2 in the series.
Again, I was entertained with rounded characters who didn't had it easy, but learned and grew from their past experiences. I loved the whole therapy with horses theme. Ben quickly found a place in my heart with his gentleness and depth.
The dual-time story about Ben's great-great-great grandfather, was again intriguing especially because it was around WW2.
The author did not shy away from her Christian input, via Andrew's walk with God and Ben's own relationship with God and Ashley's road to finding a relationship with God, which I loved.
The book felt way to short and there's a few things which I would liked more answers to, but I enjoyed it and will soon listen to it again.
I'm excited for book 3 in the series.
Recommended to fans of Christian fictions who like more "food" in their stories.
There’s just something special about the writing of Robin Lee Hatcher, and Cross My Heart continues the trend of spiritually uplifting stories with rich, complex characterization and emotional depth. This story of addiction, grace and redemption moves at a steady pace that allowed me to be enveloped in the rural Idaho setting and life of Ben and Ashley, as well as Andrew and Helen of generations past. Although number 2 in the series, this story easily stands alone.
Hatcher excels at crafting stories that entertain while conveying a relevancy through situations and struggles that connects with all readers in some way. Ben is a recovering alcoholic who knows the grace of God firsthand, resulting in a peace, steadiness, and certainty of purpose. Ashley has been touched by addiction through her brother and is understandably guarded, trying to “fix” or control everything in her life by herself. The physical, emotional and spiritual connection between these two propels the storyline in a most satisfying way.
Horses make great heroes and the field of equine therapy – broken horses helping broken people – is fascinating. Ben’s response to Ashley’s question as to why he wanted to open an equine therapy barn simply conveys it all … “The short answer to your question is God told me that’s what I’m supposed to do with the farm. Make it a place where spirits get healed and hope gets restored through the use of horses.”
Faith themes are a natural part of the story, just as they should be. The “Legacy of Faith” series title is reflective of the overarching theme of a legacy of faith, exemplified in Andrew Henning’s Bible. The story of Andrew and Helen Henning in the 1940s during World War II is continued as two sons enter into the fighting, and his sustaining faith is shared when the current possessor of his heirloom Bible feels spiritually led to pass it on to another family member.
Whether it be with animals or humans, rescue, healing, recovery, and the gaining/giving of trust is a slow process, and I appreciated how the reality of this process is conveyed. Cross My Heart is a wonderfully engaging story of forgiveness, healing, second chances, letting go of and not being defined by our past. I really can’t say enough good things about this story.
Highly recommended.
I received a copy of this book through JustRead Tours. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
This is such an amazing series! Cross My Heart is the second book in the Legacy of Faith series but it reads beautifully as a standalone too. Love the series title -- it captures the heart of each story since Great-Grandpa Henning's bible brings solace and hope to his descendants in a very personal way.
This time, the secondary timeline features Andrew Henning's experiences during World War II and Ben (our current timeline hero) receives the note-riddled bible at a pivotal time in his life. Hatcher expertly blends the two timelines and I love the strong sense of family and faith that anchor their stories. Honestly, there were so many inspiring quotes but I listened to the audible edition so I couldn't write them all down. You can bet I'll be getting a paperback copy for my keeper shelf so I can soak up those words of wisdom!
A recovering alcoholic, with ten years of sobriety behind him, Ben is finally looking forward to a future he's not only dreamed about, but feels God has prepared the way for. Equine therapy was an important part of his recovery and he's determined to start up a program on the farm he's inherited from his grandfather. I found all the horse details absolutely fascinating. This book even prompted me to look up equine therapy programs in my own area! I was surprised to find a number of them within the city limits!
Then we have Ashley who lives and works to support her horse rescue operation and when Ben approaches her about providing some horses for his therapy barn...well, you might say it's a match made in heaven...Except they are both holding fast to secrets that have the power to tear them apart.
I really feel like Robin Lee Hatcher was divinely inspired to write this book. It touched me on so many levels. It's a true slice of life -- raw and real and messy. A powerful testimony to the changes God can make in our lives if we have the courage to place our trust in Him. Both Ben and Ashley grapple with issues common to many of us -- extending forgiveness, finding emotional healing, understanding our worth as a child of God and letting go of the past in order to embrace a better future.
A truly captivating and inspiring read -- I can't wait until the next book in the series releases! In fact, I hope there are a whole lot more cousins who need Great-Grandpa Hening's life lessons, 'cause I sure do!
Cross My Heart was such a touching story of triumphing over addiction, forgiving others, and moving forward.
Although it is the second book in the Legacy of Faith series, it can be read as a stand alone. Both Cross My Heart and the first book in the series, Who I Am With You, have two storylines within each book. There is the modern day plot and the historical tale, connected through a Bible that is passed down through the generations.
I enjoyed the setting of this novel, on the family farm in both storylines. The characters had a lot to deal with and work though emotionally, both in the present and in the past. I was intrigued from start to finish.
(4.5 stars)
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Robin Lee Hatcher is the author of many novels, but the first that I picked up was Who I Am With You, book one in the A Legacy of Faith series. And I quickly fell in love with Hatcher's writing style and her beautiful characters. So, of course, I was anxious to read book two!
Our main characters, Ben Henning and Ashley Showalter, are both unique and engaging characters. Ben is quite the gentleman, although he's not one of those too-perfect love interest characters. In fact, he has quite the backstory. I quickly fell in love with him and his kind heart. Ashley took a little longer, as she is just so different than me, but soon I loved her too, and was rooting for both of these characters and their story.
The storyline is fairly slow moving, but regardless it kept my interest and I found myself wanting to just keep reading where other books with similarly paced storylines would have left me bored. There's just something about Hatcher's writing style and the setting of her stories that makes me want to go spend a day--or a while--with these characters in small-town Idaho. The author also does a fabulous job incorporating the dual-time period. I'm not usually a fan of those types of stories, but I love Hatcher's unique take on the idea!
I also loved the representation of equine therapy that was featured in Cross My Heart; it is a subject that has always interested me and I've done a lot of reading on it. It is clear that Hatcher has done her research on the subject, for which I give her kudos. Similarly, the redemptive themes and themes of faith included were incredibly well done. So often I feel like Christian authors have the tendency to force that aspect and it becomes "preachy." Not so with Hatcher; it is just a natural and beautiful addition to the story.
The only complaint I have is that this was too short! I wish the climax had taken place a little sooner in the book, therefore leaving more time for wrapping up. But really, that is just a minor issue.
All in all, I greatly enjoyed this addition to the A Legacy of Faith series! I highly recommend this series to lovers of sweet, contemporary romance with deep themes. I will be eagerly awaiting book three!
The Legacy of Faith is series with a dual timeline tying the Henning family beginning during the Depression and forward with present day cousins. In Cross My Heart, Ben Henning, a recovering alcoholic, has a dream to start an equine therapy non-profit business to help those dealing with various situations causing difficult problems-from abusive situations to drug/alcohol issues. Ashley Showalter is dealing with her own problems but her heart lies with horses, mostly rescue horses. The two get together and work on Ben's dream and help each other mutually. In Andrew and Helen Henning's life, World War II is going on and the story shows how it is affecting their family, especially those sons who are led to enlist for the service of this country. Their family is growing up and expanding. Robin Lee Hatcher is a great storyteller who is able to weave a lovely and touching story of family and faith that will stay with you long after you finish the book. I received a complimentary ARC from Thomas Nelson Publishing through NetGalley. The opinions and thoughts stated are mine only.
I love being back with Grandpa Andrew Henning’s Bible and how he continues to touch the lives of his decedents. The book does flash back to the time leading up to and continuing into WWII, and we are with those who are the family of the current day relatives. The book does touch on some tough topics, and then with the help of those that have met the same challenges find healing. We put faces on these individual through the words of this author, and in the end, I wanted to go and volunteer at the ranch. There is a little bit of sweet romance here, a scare because of greed, and a love one ending up in jail, and now I am wondering who the next recipient of God’s Word will be?
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Thomas Nelson, and was not required to give a positive review.
I’m always hesitant and cautious when I start a book by an author I’ve never read. Happily this book turned out to be one I enjoyed. (I didn’t realized it until late in the story that this is the 2nd book in the series, but it can be read as a stand alone without any trouble.)
While the author dealt with hard issues such as drugs and drinking, and how it affects others, she never went into details that made me feel dirty or uncomfortable. The horse rescue work was interesting, and I just wished there had been some more of the actual equine therapy. I enjoyed the main characters. Ashley was dealing with hurt and trust issues, but I loved watching her unfold into someone who could trust and forgive. I did wish there had been a little more about her giving her life to Christ. As it was, it seemed to leave things a little unclear. Ben was great! I really liked how he didn’t push, how he prayed and lived his faith. And I really appreciated how respectful he was of his mom even when she wasn’t nice to him.
There were a few kisses, one before any relationship was official, and the others afterwards. But they weren’t detailed or long.
The one thing that just felt odd, was the little bits of Ben’s great-great-grandfather during WWII. It was only about 1-2 pages after the end of each chapter, so it really pulled me from the main story. I did enjoy the WWII story, but it was confusing switching from one to the other. And then in the end there was really no tie in to the modern story. Except that it was about Ben’s ancestors.
Altogether, I did enjoy this story and would like to read another by this author.
In book two of Robin Lee Hatcher’s Legacy of Faith Series, God shows how He takes two broken hearts and puts them together again. Ben Henning, a recovering alcoholic and Ashley Showlater, who tries to fix her life and her family’s life on her own. I loved how the author used real world problems in her book. This book is about forgiveness and letting go of the past. It is also about healing and I love how the author intertwines the Equine therapy as a form of healing mental and physically in the story. I believe the author, Robin Lee Hatcher, captured the emotions perfectly in this book to show that even though our past is not perfect and we still make mistakes, God is perfect and He knows what He is doing in our lives at all times. Ben and Ashley come together for a bigger purpose. God’s purpose. This story draws you in from the first chapter and once you start you do not want to put it down. I highly recommend this book and I can't wait to read the third one!!!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I loved everything about this story--the dual times, the horse rescue setting, and characters with depth and charm. The story addresses heavy duty topics, but it's gently told. Loved it!
Cross My Heart by Robin Lee Hatcher is the second book in the Legacy of Faith series. In this book, Ben Henning and Ashley Showalter meet through their mutual love of horses as Ben works to set up his equine therapy mission on his great-great-grandfather's farm. Ashley has the experience Ben needs to help find the right horses for the mission to be successful. While they both share a passion for horses, they also are afraid to share their secrets. Ben is a recovering alcoholic. Ashley's brother is an opioid addict. Are they both willing to share all of their hearts and to give love a chance?
While we read the modern story of Ben and Ashley in Cross My Heart, Hatcher also flashes back to share more of Ben's family history through the story of his family members during the early 1930's. This story is also emphasized through the family Bible that Ben inherited.I love that this family Bible takes a prominent place in each book in this series. I especially love seeing how one generation affects the next through their prayers and godly living in this series.
I am enjoying this Legacy of Faith series so much. I already can't wait for book 3! In Cross My Heart, I liked how Hatcher effortlessly weaves faith into the story. I like in this book how the relationship developed between Ben and Ashley over time. I also enjoyed the back story of Ben's family. Hatcher does such a good job of addressing the challenges that families face and she handles them realistically with faith. Hatcher just brings her characters to life and helps me feel like I am living right in the story with them. I think Cross My Heart, as well as the first book in the series, would make an excellent Book Club discussion book. There are discussion questions in the back of this book to help facilitate discussions.
I received Cross My Heart courtesy of the author and the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review.
I knew I was going to love this one but somehow I managed to put off reading it from week to week. I finally sat down to read it and didn’t get back up until I had read the whole thing! Hatcher easily swept me away in this well-told story with two timelines, contemporary and WW2. Both are compelling stories and learning what happened in the same town/house so many years before lent a sense of permanence to the story. I can’t help but think that Andrew would have approved heartily of Ben’s new endeavor with the farm in a new century.
Ben and Ashley enjoy a slow romance despite pretty quickly feeling attraction for each other. I liked that they didn’t just throw up every other dream they had for love, but continued to build their lives until they came naturally alongside each other at the end. A number of issues pop up to be dealt with and I enjoyed that the characters all met them headlong and dealt with them rather than crawling in a corner and sobbing poor-me!
I loved the rich Christian applications in the story and the gentle but in-depth way they are portrayed. I feel encouraged by this story.
Thanks to the publisher for a free reading copy. A favorable review was not required.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. A contemporary Christian fiction novel with strong, relatable characters, alternating with a historical storyline involving the hero’s ancestors, “Cross my Heart” is a story about resilience and fighting adversity, be it one’s internal demons or a very real evil, like war. I find Robin Lee Hatcher’s storytelling so compelling and the depiction of addiction so realistic that I couldn’t stop reading, even if I didn’t relate to the experience of faith. Ben is such a charismatic hero: a man with a tortured past, but in peace with himself and with a deep steadiness, seeming more sometimes an old soul than a young man. His charm, attentiveness and generous and compassionate nature are a magnet, and the fact he’s so oblivious to his romantic life in the beginning is endearing. Ashley is a great heroine, too, her passion for horses riveting, her guardedness so well explored. I loved the equine therapy context and how the dimension of broken horses helping broken people was woven into the plot. The historical plotline was engaging too, with its complex characters, and I wonder what will happen to them in the future. There are also some characters in the contemporary plotline that would deserve their own story.
This new book by Robin Lee Hatcher features a dual timeline with present day Ben Henning and his great-great grandfather Andrew Henning. As I alternated between Ben and Andrew's stories, I was reminded that even as we face struggles and heartaches there is always the hope that our future will be better. There is mention of both alcohol and drug addiction and the ability to overcome them is explored, along with forgiveness and redemption. A Bible that belonged to Andrew Henning is a part of this faith-filled story and I love how God's Word is shared through this family heirloom.
Horse lovers will appreciate that Ben Henning and Ashley Showalter are involved with horse rescues and an Equine therapy program and the budding romance between the two of them will definitely appeal to romance fans. Cross My Heart is an enjoyable book and I recommend it to all who like Christian themed novels.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and I have chosen to share my honest opinions in this review.
Cross My Heart is the second book in the Legacy of Faith series, but it is a standalone story. It is a dual-time story, with one family involved. Ben Henning and his grandfather Grant are the family members in the present, and Andrew Henning and his family are the focus of the past storyline, which takes place during WWII. It is the family bible and the names handwritten in it that bring the two timelines together.
Ben was a rebellious teen and after climbing behind the wheel while drunk he has a serious car accident that leaves his best friend in a wheelchair and him wallowing in the bottle. It is not until he finds Jesus, that he is able to move on with his life, always praying that his friend will forgive him. Because of his strong faith, and following God's plans for his life, he plans to open The Harmony Barn where they will provide equine therapy for troubled and disadvantaged people. While searching for horses, he meets Ashley Showalter, who is dealing with her own issues. She doesn't have the room on her property to keep the many horses she rescues and rehabilitates so accepts Ben's offer to work with him. Both of these flawed characters have hearts of gold and when Ashley finds God, she is able to move forward in her life as well.
In the past we find Andrew Henning and his wife, Helen raising their family of five in the 1940s. When his oldest son, Ben, tells his parents he wants to go to college so he can enroll in flight school and join the airforce, they are worried. Andrew prays and reads scripture to guide him in his decisions. As time marches in, Andrew and Helen will deal with many trials involving their children and their involvement in the war.
This book has a little romance, some family drama and family love, second chances and a lot of faith. This was a well-written story that I read in a couple of day. The two different timelines meshed well together and gave an enjoyable look into five generations of the Henning family. Ben Henning (in the present) is a wonderful MC. His faith directs all his decisions and actions and he trusts that to lead him in the right direction. Ashley is a strong character who needs a nudge to move forward with her family and her faith. This was a sweet romance, that blossomed over time. It was not instalove, but love that grew with some bumps along the way. I really enjoyed the addition of the equine therapy story as a main plot. This is an area that is growing all the time as more and more therapists recognize its value. My one complaint with this book is that it seemed to wrap up a bit too quickly. It seemed that there was a climax and turning point, then the end. Besides that, I would recommend this book to those who enjoy Christian Fiction. I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
Cross My Heart is a beautiful story. The second book in the Legacy Of Faith series, Cross My Heart follows two new main characters but also continues the historical story of the Henning family. This modern-day story is woven together by threads of the past and the history and faith of a family across multiple generations. Cross My Heart is a relaxing and restorative read.
Ben Hennings is starting a horse farm, hoping he can help others through equine therapy, just as he was once helped. When looking for horses, he is directed to Ashley Showalter, who helps rescue horses. They both have a love of horses and helping others in common. What they don’t know is that they also share a history touched by addictions, Ben personally and Ashley through her brother’s addictions. When this is revealed, Ben and Ashley must decide if their pasts and fears should determine if they have a future together.
I love the way Robin Lee Hatcher weaves together two stories, past and present. While Andrew Henning and his family face World War Two and the sacrifices of their family for their country and freedom, Ben and Ashley are starting a horse farm for equine therapy, learning more about each other, exploring a possible romance and discovering the past hurts and truths they must face if they want a future together.
I have always loved stories about equine therapy and horse rescue. It is such a powerful and wonderful thing and Robin Lee Hatcher brings it to life so well. I love both Ben and Ashley’s passion for their horses and the way they can heal and bring people together - even the two of them. The romance between them is genuine and heartfelt. They connect and yet also dig deeper to strengthen that connection.
Ashley’s faith journey is a large part of Cross My Heart. As Ben and his grandfather share and demonstrate their faith, Ashley is curious to explore further. She takes her time and makes the decision rationally, but there is no denying the joy she feels and I loved how Hatcher brings this to the page.
Overall, I really enjoyed Cross My Heart. It was utterly delightful to read and hard to put down. I look forward to continuing Andrew Henning and his family’s story of the past and the new story of two hearts coming together in the present in book three and I highly recommend books one and two.

I really enjoyed book 1 of the A Legacy of Faith series, but Hatcher just nailed this one. You can't go wrong with realistic characters who pull at your heartstrings and then throw in dogs, horses, and Idaho farm country. Top it off then with a strong spiritual thread that is food for the soul, and you definitely have a winner.
Hatcher dealt with not so common subject matter in this one since the main male character, Ben, was a recovered alcoholic/drug user who only found his way back to normality through a 12 step program, a developing faith, and a wonderful equine rehabilitation program. Now he wants to pay it back by using his grandfather' farm that has been left to him to develop his own equine rehab program. Ashley has been burned by love and has no faith, but she loves her rescue horses and buries herself in them and her waitress job. But can a connection with Ben and helping developing his equine program, lead both her and Ben to something more in life.
This dual time line story flashed back to Ben's ancestors during World War II. Hatcher did an excellent job of winding the two time lines in and out of one another. I loved seeing the strength of partnership between Andrew and Helen as they faced two of their children heading off to war and a third falling in love through letter writing with a sailor who had no family. This partnership as well as the one between Ben's grandparents were both models for what Ben wanted in a relationship and marriage.
Hated to see this book end, and definitely hope there will be another book in this series.
**I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson through NetGalley. Opinions are mine alone. I was not compensated for this review.
'People failed. Horses didn't. Horses never lied.'
Ben Henning and Ashley Showalter have a lot in common, one thing being they both love horse, so when Ben wants to get an equine therapy barn up and running, Ashley is very willing to help out. I loved this aspect of the story. Ben has been through a very rough time and Ashley has problems with trust, so they can both benefit from the equine therapy. Both stand in need of God's grace. He bestows that grace on His children every day. Hatcher weaves together a story of God's redemption that is heartwarming nd full of faith. Interspersed with short vignettes told by Ben's great great grandfather, this family settles into your heart and will nourish your spirit as you read.
*My thanks to the publisher for a preview copy of this book via Net Galley. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
Cross My Heart by Robin Lee Hatcher is a most delightful dual timeline Christian novel about love and the heart of God. It is the second book in the Legacy Of Faith series but can be read as a stand-alone. I enjoyed catching up with familiar faces. The story spans present day and the World War II years. In both the characters trust God to see them through all the stages of life. Prayer is important. “Our prayers never go unanswered, even when things don’t turn out the way we expected.” God answers our prayers in His way and in His timing. Prayers are our lifeline. Lives are altered through prayer. God rescues us from our situations when He hears our heartfelt prayers. We may think that we are searching for God (and we may be) but God is also searching for us. “I didn’t have to find Him. He was there all the time. Waiting for me.” What a beautiful image that conjures up. God waits for us. God longs for us to turn to Him. Within the novel there are horses rescued from terrible situations. They can be seen as a motif for us – God rescues us, gives us unconditional love and restores our lives. Horses are important in helping to heal broken lives. They give unconditional love and wait patiently for it to be returned. Again this can be seen as the heart of God. Within the tale there is a God-given vision of an equine therapy farm. It is “broken horses helping broken people.” It is also “a place where spirits get healed and hope gets restored through the use of horses.” When God gives a vision, it will come to fruition. There are the difficult themes of alcohol and drug abuse. Until we admit we have a problem we cannot begin to heal. We need others to help raise us up out of our pits of desperation. The themes of forgiveness and trust also link in here. We must forgive both ourselves and others and learn to trust again. I adored Cross My Heart. The characters are realistically drawn and relatable. This is a fabulous series and I cannot wait to read more about the Henning family. Robin Lee Hatcher is a talented author who draws the reader in from the very first page. It is an absolutely wonderful book. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
CROSS MY HEART is a story of past mistakes, struggles and hurts, and how those are met with faith in a loving God and the love of others. It's also about those who sacrifice and care for abused and neglected horses, and one man's dream to build an equine therapy barn. Weaved through is another story set during WWII of the hero's ancestors who lived on the same farm he has inherited. It's a gentle romance full of heart.
It took me a bit to get into this story. Not that it wasn't interesting or that I didn't like the characters, because I did. More that I didn't feel it completely engage me. It slips from present day back to 1939 to 1945 during WWII and I didn't always feel a connection between the two besides that they were family. I felt like that connection needed to be stronger. Maybe if it was from Ben's perspective who present-day Ben was named after or something? I'm not sure exactly what would have helped. I would start to get more into the present day story and then it would switch and vice versa. They needed to be more intertwined.
I really liked these characters! They were complex, with their own weaknesses and strengths, and their own emotions. Nothing felt over-dramatic or unrealistic. I really enjoyed the romance. It was slow, patient, and sweet. I also really enjoyed the horse rescuing and the equine therapy. I also didn't feel like the inspirational element was overdone. It was powerful in places and soft in others, but it always felt genuine and not forced. Towards the end of the book, the stories (both present and past) really tugged on my heart and even got me choked up a bit. Then that ending... it was perfect, with lots of sweetness and a little swooning.
In the end, was it what I wished for? I wanted to connect more with the first half of this story, but I did enjoy it. By the end, I loved the characters, the romance, and these two stories. Full of friendship, heartache, and love. Recommended to Christian romance fans.

There's a good story here, but Hatcher just didn't dig deeply enough IMHO. Ben is a recovering addict who has turned his life around through faith and service. This is very admirable, but he comes off as a paragon. He never seems to get angry (even when facing off with his one-dimensionally vile mother), he never struggles. Ashley is the one who struggles, but her ultimate accepting of Christ into her life is written in a dashed off manner that lacks oomph. These two did seem to have feelings for each other (there's a desire to kiss - which hallelujah!) but it skates the surface for the entirety of the story. I wanted deep. I got shallow wading pool.
The interspersed snippets of the WWII era storyline featuring Ben's great-great grandfather are OK - but feel very "extra" and not anchored to the main storyline. I get what the author was doing here - she's writing a family saga series - but for me I think it would have made more sense to give all these characters their OWN books instead of chopping them down into segments interrupting the main contemporary romance storyline.
For those who sometimes turn to inspirational not so much for the religion/faith aspects of the story - but because you're looking for "just-kisses" romances be aware - this one is fairly heavy on what I call The God Stuff.
OK, but it honestly could have been great with some depth.
3.5 stars This is a sweet faith-filled tale that many readers will connect with through their own life experiences. It is the second in the Legacy of Faith series, which weaves together the lives of a family during World War II and the family Bible that gives these cousins in the present day help and guide them. Ashley's character really grated on me at first, until Hatcher shows her heart being beaten down over the years with disappointment and hurt from her brother's addiction. I appreciated that it didn't overall make that much of a difference in her relationship with Ben, but as more of her past was revealed, I could see where she was coming from guarding her heart. I also liked getting to know more about the family in the past and furthering that storyline, and I also was fascinated by the information about horse rescues and equine therapy.
Themes of forgiveness and courage resonate throughout. I look forward to the next book in the series.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.
I have to admit that at first, I didn't know if I was going to like Ashley Showalter, but Ben Henning was easy to like and root for. Once I got to know a bit of Ashley's back story, I started to understand why she did what she did, and I began to root for her. In some fiction, it's easy to believe that this has really happened or could happen, Cross My Heart was certainly was one of those. The emotions that could be felt by Ashley and Ben were real to me, and they kept me riveted to the pages, and I didn't want to stop reading until I could find out what happened. This was definitely a very satisfying storyline, and I look forward to the next book in the A Legacy of Faith series.
This is book #2 in The Legacy of Faith series and while I personally liked book 1 better, this one was still a quick, feel-good read. I enjoyed how the author incorporated a new angle with the same family, while also weaving in the story of great grandpa Henning as she did in the first book.
First of all, I love that this book has equine therapy. I think it is something that is extremely important in our world today and is very underrated. There are so many organizations across the US like Ben has, and this is a great way to promote it. Plus the horse rescues that Hatcher touched on. We see so much animal abuse in the news today and it absolutely breaks my heart. Now while I realize that not everyone has the means to do either of these things, perhaps this story will touch hearts and prompt people to donate to their local cause!
I always enjoy books by Robin Lee Hatcher. I just can't help it. She writes strong yet real characters, has beautiful settings, and weaves faith throughout her stories. The addition of not only the bible in this story, but the brief writings from the past were a pleasant surprise. I loved hearing about Ben's family, especially during the difficult time of war. The little snippets placed between chapters was the perfect amount - not too much that it took away from Ben and Ashley, but enough that it kept you interested.
Hatched touches on the difficult topic of addiction, both with alcohol and drugs. This is something that isn't seen in every Christian story, which is fine, but I think it needs to be out there more. Ben took something very dark and hurtful and turned it to good - all by the grace of God. He is not at all ashamed to admit that as well, he was where he was by the grace of God. I loved how easily he talked about his faith with everyone he came across. His character is truly an inspiration to readers, no matter what their pasts.
I also enjoyed the subtle romance that blossomed between Ben and Ashley. They both had secrets which were holding them back from being honest with each other. The truth is, I think they just needed to learn to trust each other - and not all romance characters wait for that to happen. I enjoyed reading the story this way. I thought it highlighted the main points of the book (therapy and rehab stuff), and just had the romance as a back drop.
This is a story I really didn't want to end, but I have a feeling I will be satisfied once the next installment of this series comes out. I am already counting down the days! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Having experienced people's failures to a greater extent than most, Ashley Showwalter has made it her mission in life to rescue horses. The big animals have always provided her with a sense of peace and contentment; it's only natural that she can't bear to see them mistreated. Ashley's own barn space is rather limited, so when a neighbor comes along seeking her advice about his vision for a equine therapy program, she jumps at the opportunity to become involved. . . . . . .she just didn't expect her heart to follow along so closely behind her head.
"I just don't want you believing that you don't deserve more, that you don't deserve love and a family. God's plans are often more than we expect. We simply have to be open to them."
Ben Henning has traveled the road of recovery for many of his young years. Now that he has been gifted with beautiful family property, he feels a calling to help others who are trying hard to become overcomers. Instantly attracted to Ashley Showalter's knowledge of horses and desire to help him succeed, Ben begins walking down a path that he never thought could be his; just what kind of partnership is forming. . . . and can it withstand the scrutiny of full disclosure?
With Robin Lee Hatcher's easy going story-telling style, readers will grow to appreciate how the strength and the struggles of generations past can either aid or abet those upon whom they are bestowed. Yet the promise of God remains clear; "Be strong and of a good courage, be not afraid . . . .for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thought goest."
I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.
