Best-selling author Kelly Irvin splits her writing time between Amish romances and romantic suspense. Her latest release is Trust Me (2/8/22), a romantic suspense novel set in San Antonio's historic art district. It explores broken trust and whether trust can ever be restored. Publishers Weekly called it a "whirlwind romantic thriller" and "an emotional rollercoaster."

Her latest Amish romance is Love's Dwelling, the first book in the Amish Blessings series, which released in July 2021. The series takes place in Yoder and Haven, Kansas, and looks at adoption among the Amish. The series follows her Amish romance series, Amish of Sky Country includes Mountains of Grace, followed by The Long Bridge Home, and Peace in the Valley. The series explores Amish communities in northwest Montana and how they are impacted by wildfires.

Other romantic suspense novels include Her Every Move, which Publishers Weekly called gripping suspense and said, "loving descriptions of San Antonio’s attractions enhance the well-paced plot."

The publication called Closer Than She Knows a "brisk, smoothly written, thriller."

Kelly's Every Amish Season series includes Upon A Spring Breeze, Beneath the Summer Sun, Through the Autumn Air, and With Winter's First Frost from Zondervan/HarperCollins Christian Publishing. This follows the Amish of Bee County series, The Saddle Maker's Son, released in June 2016. It is an ECPA bestseller. It follows The Bishop's Son, and the critically acclaimed bestseller, The Beekeeper's Son, which earned a starred review from Publishers Weekly. The reviewer called it "a beautifully woven masterpiece." The Beekeeper's Son was a finalist in the romance category of the 2016 ACFW Carol Awards Contest.

Kelly is also the author of the Bliss Creek Amish series and the New Amish Amish series. The first series includes To Love and To Cherish, A Heart Made New, and Love’s Journey Home, published by Harvest House. The New Hope Amish series includes Love Still Stands, followed by Love Redeemed, which was an ACFW Carol Award finalist, and A Plain Love Song.

Kelly has also penned two other romantic suspense novels, A Deadly Wilderness and No Child of Mine..

I really never gave a thought to reading the suspense genre before my son became a police officer, I was too busy reading Amish and Historical fiction books. When I started reading suspense a whole new world of fascinating, action packed books opened up to me. I never thought I would enjoy this genre but I was mistaken.
When an author has success in writing a genre they usually stick to that genre and if they do switch to another genre the writing feels forced and doesn't read smoothly, not the case with Kelly Irvin.
I have read and enjoyed all of her Amish books and was very surprised to see her tackling the romantic suspense genre, but you know what, she's done it. She has climbed this new mountain adventure and tackled it! Her conversion to this new genre is seamless with smooth reading.
Meticulously researched, which I always appreciate the author lives in Texas close to the U.S.- Mexico border which is a multicultural melting pot which enables her to draw from her experiences in writing this and other stories.
If you want fast paced,a fascinating story, romantic suspense with gun smuggling and keep you on your toes tension and characters who are not who they portray themselves to be you will definitely enjoy this one.
I can relate to the border tensions in this book as I lived in a border town myself in my teens when I lived in Yuma,Arizona.
I eagerly look forward to reading more of this author's books, both Suspense and Amish.

A non-stop action ride with a lots of romance on the side. Gabriella has enough on her plate owning a restaurant, living with her paraplegic, widowed sister and her two kids, and dodging her ex-fiance Eli whom she hasn't forgiven without a man showing up shot and uttering her brother's name. To save her missing in action brother, she plunges headfirst into a world of gun-smuggling ring at the border, forced to rely on Eli (who won me over with his Spanish pet names and deserves all the love in the world) and a reporter. The family dynamics (and hate-love between cop Eli and the reporter) was as strong as the romance of a man who will do whatever it takes to protect the woman he loves even though she refuses to forgive him. And they all have their own secrets...

An excellent romantic suspense and an honest look at some of the policies our nation is struggling with.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, and the opinions are my own.

This suspense novel has a lot of action and it was a challenge to figure out who the villain was. Main character Gabriella is a former attorney that became a dessert chef. Her ex-fiance is in law enforcement and she has trouble with his occupation and believed he cheated on her.

The dynamics between the many characters including a couple of reporters was a lot of fun. Overall, a well done suspense novel.

My gratitude to publisher Thomas Nelson for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

I liked the action and suspense but I really didn’t like Eli. Why was he so secretive? Why did he get so mad at Gabriella for thinking he cheated? She found him with another woman and he wouldn’t tell her the truth. What was she supposed to think? He was so mad she didn’t forgive him but she didn’t even know what to forgive him for. HE WOULDN’T TELL HER what happened. But...I mean other than all that it was a fun read.

Another high-stakes suspense from Kelly Irvin, Over the Line starts with a bang, quickly delving into gun smuggling, a brother’s disappearance, and a broken romance.

When a young man dies on her doorstep, Gabriella Benoit becomes caught in quite a bit of danger, somehow connected to her brother, and the only person to whom she can turn for help is her ex-fiance, homicide detective Eli Cavazos. As the pair determines to find the truth—behind what’s currently happening, as well as what broke them apart—the danger provides a number of twists and turns, even pulling Gabby’s sister and reporter-friend into it all.

Over the Line definitely delivers its promised suspense. It’s hard to know what will happen next, but it’s an exciting ride, to be sure. Still, because of all this excitement, the backstory between Gabby and Eli becomes drawn out and ill-paced, so their ending feels rushed and not entirely genuine (at least, it did to me). These characters intrigued me—and I rooted for them—but I would have appreciated just a tad more from them throughout the story.

Nevertheless, Over the Line is an interesting story and could be just the book fans of romantic suspense are looking to read right now.

Whoa! What an intense, complicated, adrenaline-rush of a read! Power. Greed. Corruption. And a desperate race to find Gabriella's brother...while avoiding capture or death! And the dynamics between Gabriella and Eli -- oh la la! Gabriella is still carrying a major grudge after their break up but Eli is so penitent and besotted and all together droolworthy! While Gabriella is super intense and annoyingly stubborn and in-your-face opinionated and not shy about letting Eli know exactly how she feels about him. It broke my heart. And his. So there's angst in their romance and plenty more in the suspense which makes for a riveting page turner.

Over the Line is and intense romantic suspense with close calls, an abundance of bad guys (and suspects) and not one, but two romances.

Kelly Irvin’s second romantic suspense book almost has too much happening at once (in addition to the abundance of characters). But, for the most part, I kept up with the characters and speedy plot. Yet it’s those exact things that seemed to have diminished some development of the main character interactions.

I never did feel like I fully connected with Gabrielle and Eli. Gabby’s a former lawyer yet her stubborn resolve to assume the worse of Eli despite his attempts to apologize didn’t ring true. And Eli isn’t much better. Why doesn’t he just tell her the truth already? Even when he finally does exactly that (way too late in the plot), my thought was “That’s it? That’s what he was hiding?” In truth, I was much more interested in Gabby’s sister Natalie’s romance and backstory.

However, Irvin gives readers a great diversity of characters and Eli’s father is an excellent example of complete and total forgiveness.

I have kinda become addicted to Kelly Irvin’s Romantic Suspense books and this one is no exception. It is filled with gun running to the cartels in Mexico, kidnapping, murder, romance and a lesson in forgiveness for others as Jesus forgives us. I love the main characters, Gabriella and Eli, and even the supporting characters were all good. Over The Line will keep you turning pages long into the night to find out what happens next.

I am not certain what I expected when I dove into this book, probably more thriller than anything due to the cover. What comes inside these pages is a romantic suspense Christian thriller with not one but two romances. Two sister’s find love while in the midst of high-stakes drama. Both are second chance love. One is love reunited. One is newfound.

On top of this surprising romance thing happening there is the search for Gabby’s missing brother, Jake, an ATF agent who fell for the wrong woman. His actions set forth a domino effect that puts a lot of people he loves in danger and it all happens without intention and unknowingly.

Gabby is met at her door by a stranger who mutters her brother’s name and then dies at her feet. Gabby’s on again, off again police officer boyfriend, Eli is nearby and assists. I don’t want to give too much away because it is the journey that makes this story interesting.

Just know that there are subtle sprinkles of God, Jesus and praying mixed in these pages. I know that might turn off some but it is not obnoxious Jesus freak musings and rather realistic cries out to their Savior who might assist them in their times of need.

I thought this was interesting and kept my attention but I would have liked the story to have more flow. The text felt a bit choppy at times. I know flow is difficult in an action adventure story so it didn’t really bother me too much. I know that is a big sticking point for some.

I read this in a day and a half. Clean, easy read. Some blood but no sex. Mostly kissing and romance. Family is also big in this story too. I am a bit sad that Deacon’s and Natalie’s story was stuck in the middle of Gabby and Eli’s story. I think they deserved their own novel. But that is just my humble opinion.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

Wow. This book really kept me turning the pages as fast as I could. It was full of suspense, nail biting scenes, and even a few surprises. I could see the entire story play in my head, almost like an episode of FBI or CSI. Irvin does a wonderful job of keeping readers on their toes, and ending the chapters with enough of a cliffhanger that there really isn’t a good stopping point. AKA – you might want to schedule a block of time to read this all at once.

There was a little romance amongst the midst, but I have to say that I didn’t enjoy this story line as much as I thought I would. When Gabriella and Eli kept alluding to their past, but not really giving much information until much later in the story, I almost felt like perhaps this was a series and I missed book one. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out for quite a while what had happened in their background, and I think I would have appreciated their story more if I had known a little earlier on. That being said, once the revelation occurred, everything starting making sense. I could see why each character acted the way they did, and enjoyed seeing the ultimate message displayed in this story – the power of forgiveness. Sometimes we don’t realize that when we don’t forgive people, it affects our lives more than we realize, case in point is Gabriella. I don’t want to give anything away, but there is someone besides Eli that she really needed to forgive, and until she could do that, there was no future for them. It made me wonder if I was harboring the same issue in my own heart.

Overall I really enjoyed reading this. I love a non-stop suspense novel that I can’t seem to take my eyes off of. And now that I’ve read it and know the whodunit, I kind of want to back and read it again to look for all the clues!

"I've seen enough to know that learning to put one foot in front of the other takes time and prayer and more time."

When Gabrielle Benoit's evening is interrupted by an over-protective ex-fiance and a dying stranger, her life spirals out of control; for the victim barely manages to speak her brother's name before a very handsome homicide detective rushes to her aid. The news only gets worse; Gabby's brother is missing, his undercover contact is dead, and the ensuing spiral of violent events have tipped off some very dangerous players in the illegal arms enterprise along the Texas-Mexico border. Gabby and Eli Cavazos have a decision to make . . . . can they put aside the broken pieces of their relationship long enough to search for Jake Benoit? Or perhaps, can this awful situation lend them the time that they need to seek the forgiveness they so desperately seek?

Readers will enjoy this fast paced suspense with its host of questionable characters and labyrinth of conflicting details; which in the end, add up to a very good story.

I enjoyed this novel with its good balance of suspense and romantic tension. Irvin's writing style is good and her plot kept me interested. I liked reading about the conditions in a town on the Texas-Mexico border, although the author notes the writing of this novel before the current border problems arose. I liked learning some about weapons trafficking too.

Irvin included a few thought provoking issues in the novel. One was the conflicting opinions about journalists. What is more important, a hurting family's privacy or the need for people to know what is happening? Irvin's journalist background informs this tension. Another issue deals with honesty and forgiveness in relationships. Another issue revolves around guns, their use and control. Irvin says in her Author's Note that she is not making any statements with the novel and is just reflecting character opinions. Nonetheless, it is a good area of discussion for a book group.

I would have appreciated more back story early on. Natalie is in a wheelchair and it seemed to take a long time to find out why. Gabriella and Eli have had lots of prior experience, such as a broken engagement. I almost felt at times I had missed an earlier novel featuring these characters.

I liked this novel and will be looking for more suspense novels from this author.

anything else for a few minutes after that tidbit. 🙂

The opening was great and Ms. Irvin set the mood for suspense and a backstory of broken romance.

I loved that the hero was a Latino and that we got to see some of the action from his pov. Hero and heroine povs always up the romantic factor in my opinion.

However, I would say that this book is more suspense with a thread of romance. Also, it took forever (again, in my opinion) for them to say why they broke up. There was such a hush about it and then when it came out in the open, you got the feeling there was still more to the subject. I would have liked the end result to be more clear and feel a little bit more organic, but that’s my preference.

As far as the suspense, it was good. There was good pacing and so much action I didn’t know who to believe or who was the ultimate bad guy. For that alone, I would read Ms. Irvin again.

Over the Line by Kelly Irvin – Mixed Reaction

Over the Line is Kelly Irvin’s newest book in the romantic suspense genre. I recently discovered Kelly’s writing when I read two of her recent Amish themed books and fell in love with her writing. That’s why I was excited to read her newest book.

Over the Line is an action-packed novel that seems like it could have been taken from today’s headline news. Chef and restaurateur, Gabriella Benoit is locking up her restaurant late at night and is met by a stranger who was carrying a gun and calling her name. As he clutches his chest and falls to the ground he says “Jake” but dies before he can say anything more about Gabby’s brother. She’d never imagined she’d need help from her former fiancé Eli Cavazos to find her missing brother or find herself in the middle of an illegal gun smuggling ring at the border. How is she going to protect her sister and family from some very desperate and dangerous men? Just who are the good guys and who are the bad ones?

I had a mixed reaction to Over the Line. I appreciate that it’s clean and not filled with sexual immorality or filthy language. There is some Christian faith included in the book and I thought it was better and more genuine towards the end of the book. I liked Eli’s mother and her openness and transparency and how different characters dealt with the issue of forgiveness. I especially liked the character Deacon, he was a nice surprise. As you get to know him you can see he’s a decent sincere person and Natalie was very likeable too.

But over-all, I feel like the action was center stage and eclipsed the characters. Some of the prayers or mentions of God and faith seemed like they were out of place or just thrown in, instead of a natural overflow of the character’s thinking or feelings. Some of the character’s actions didn’t make a lot of sense, like Deacon trespassing or Gabby confronting a police officer she suspected was corrupt because she was overcome with emotion instead of using reason and logic. That didn’t make sense coming from a person who was a former district attorney. The scene where Gabriella and Natalie crashed the van doesn’t seem realistic because the dialogue goes on and on when the bad guys are coming their way with big guns. I wasn’t overly fond of the main character Gabriella.

As I was reading this book, I kept thinking this must be the second book in a series because there was a lot of back-story between Gabriella and Eli and what had happened in Natalie’s life previously. I was surprised to find out that this wasn’t the second book. Some of the background information and questions I had were answered later in the book.

I would recommend Over the Line to someone who likes Kelly Irvin’s writing, with a note that it’s much different than her Amish themed books. Also, for those who enjoy Christian suspense novels. Over the Line will be available June 11, 2019.

I would like to thank Thomas Nelson Publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to read Over the Line by Kelly Irvin in exchange for an honest review. I was under no obligation to give a favorable review.

I enjoyed this story. I’ve only read one other Irvin book so I’m still learning her style. I thought the writing was particularly fun. She has a very imagistic way with words. “Gabriella’s biological clock banged louder than Big Ben these days” (location 2304). “This is so far off the record you’d have to travel around the world before I’d repeat it” (location 2244).
The storyline was exciting and fraught with danger and urgency. The book had an intriguing beginning and it handled well the topics of guilt and forgiveness. I enjoyed Deacon and Natalie the most. They were interesting and I liked watching their relationship begin. Gabriella and Eli seemed so different to me. I didn’t really get a handle on why they were attracted to each other and I don’t think there was a book before this one that set that all up. Still, it was a fast read and I’ll look forward to reading more from this author.
Thank you to Thomas Nelson for providing me with a complimentary e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Laredo, Texas.

A border town, like my native San Diego.  But not so much like my native San Diego.  (Actually, I'm from North County SD, but who's counting?)  I first heard of Laredo from my work in the supply chain field; Laredo is a major import/export location.  For one of my customers, all shipments to Mexico went through two cities, and Laredo was one of them.  It's a city that has been in my vocabulary and geographical knowledge for several years, but I didn't know much more about it until I read Over the Line.

What I Liked About Over the Line

Actually, getting the feel of Laredo was one of my favorite things about this book.  Authors who create their own fictional towns get to have a lot of fun with world-building, but there's something about a book that feels really authentic.  Now, I have never lived there.  But Kelly Irvin has, and while she creates some parts of the city to suit her needs (as she tells us in the afterword), it felt real to me!

The suspense element: I was successfully "suspended."  Haha.  The theme of forgiveness was pretty powerful too, but I'll admit I got more out of "mom and dad's" story towards the end than out of Daniella and Eli's.  I enjoyed getting to know this "ragtag band" that sets out to save Daniella's brother and make a dent in the gunrunner business at the same time.  These different skill sets come together for a common goal, and even the journalists set aside (sometimes, haha!) their need to break a story to protect loved ones.  And a cop and a journalist who despise each other, working together? Recipe for something interesting.

What I Didn't Like About Over the Line
I can't really imagine any police officer allowing civilians to become that involved in the hands-on portion of an investigation unless you were in a situation where the government had completely fallen apart.  Although, getting journalists involved might make sense due to the corruption issues addressed here.

Some of the characters in this story bugged me, too.  Eli keeps smoking in secret and just seems to avoid getting caught because he wants to please Daniella.  I don't know if that's a good reason to quit smoking - but lying about smoking?  He just rubbed me the wrong way.  He wants so badly for Daniella to forgive him, but he isn't willing to tell her the truth until the end.  Not much to build trust on.  More generally, I had some questions about these characters that weren't successfully answered.

Would I Recommend Over the Line?
Yes.  This story drew me into gun wars, corruption, and a search for truth.  I enjoyed it.  Will you?

I received a review copy of this book; all opinions are my own.

What happens when a former DA is forced to rely on her homicide detective ex-boyfriend? Well, for one, you get tons of tension and drama. Gabriella doesn’t trust Eli with her heart but she can trust him to keep her safe. Sounds like movie material to me.

Kelly Irvin brings current issues to life in Eli and Gabby’s gun-trafficking world of corrupt politics and border walls. I had a momentary ‘uh oh’ moment where I feared Over the Line might drop too deeply into politics, but it passed quickly enough while staying relevant to current society.

Eli stated my thoughts almost word for word when he says that if you outlaw guns, the only thing you do is leave law-abiding citizens defenseless. Criminals don’t obey the law to begin with so why would anyone think they would stop buying guns just because the law says so. That earned a fist pump which led to a raised eyebrow from my husband…he should be used to it by now, but I continue to surprise him.

Anyway, back to the book. Now, there’s an interesting twist to the romance roller coaster. Not only do we have Eli and Gabby struggling to overcome their romantic angst, but we have Natalie and Deacon in the beginning stages of romance, which is different and added some much needed lovey dovey moments while Gabby and Eli continued to circle one another snarling like starving dogs.

Speaking of Eli and Gabby, I do wish their resolution had come about sooner. After over three hundred pages of anger and resentment, I prefer more than a single chapter where all the bad comes pouring out and ta-daa! everyone forgives everyone for happily ever after. Personal preference, nothing against the author or the book.

I feel like I’m rambling and not providing a true book review…so here’s the skinny. Kelly Irvin has written a romantic suspense that will leave you clutching the couch cushions and staring out into the darkness of night for fear of what has happened to Jake. You’ll want to alternately shake sense into Gabby and Eli then applaud them for learning they must lean on God for shelter and forgiveness.

Her characters are rough-around-the-edges and could walk off the page into real life at any moment. I couldn’t put the book down and I anxiously await Kelly Irvin’s next page-turner.

I recommend this book for anyone who’s a fan of romantic suspense, particularly those who enjoy Rachel Dylan, Colleen Coble, or Nancy Mehl.

**Book received for consideration. All thoughts are 100% my own.

Several months ago, I had the chance to read known Amish fiction author Kelly Irvin's first novel in the romantic suspense genre, Tell Her No Lies. While I had not read any of her previous Amish works at that time, I absolutely loved this particular book. So when I saw she'd released this one- another in that same suspense genre, I could not wait to read it. Over the Line did not disappoint, keeping me captivated from page one.

First let's talk about the romantic aspect of the story. Those who love a great romance will be happy to hear that there are actually TWO romances rolled into this one story. Both had me rooting for the happy ending for the couples... and I must admit I would LOVE to see a follow up based around the secondary romance featured in this story! I feel like there is still much story to hear there and while I loved both romances, I definitely wanted more of that one. The romances between these two couples is quite different: our main leads were previously engaged and learning to trust again whereas the others are just meeting... in less than ideal circumstances. Isn't that how love usually finds us? When and where we least expect it?

As much as I love the romance there, I loved the suspense aspect of this story even more. This story had me guessing all the way through to the very end. There were a LOT of characters to keep up with, which I'll admit made things a little confusing at times... but it also kept you guessing. Who was good? Who was bad? Who could we trust? Because we were introduced to so many players, it was hard to really pin down the inevitable whodunit. Just when you think you've figured it out, something else is thrown out there that makes you second guess yourself. I love that in a mystery!

This story does deal with two hot topic issues--- gun and boarder control. While it is noted in the end that the story is JUST a work of fiction and not meant to take a political stance on any side, I could see how this could be a little off putting for some. Personally, I didn't feel like it was overly political or bothersome myself, but it is something worth noting before reading regardless.

Overall, I thought it was a great read that will keep you reading through to the very end.

"Over the Line" is an action-packed novel. As Gabriella Benoit was locking up her restaurant her police officer ex-fiance, Eli Cavozos shows up to make sure she gets to her car okay when a young man staggers up to them mumbling about Gabby's brother and collapses to his dealth. Gabby now turns to Eli to find her missing brother. The bad guys believes she knows about the gun smuggling over the Mexican border. She must stay one step ahead of them in order to protect her and her families lives. To top it off an ATF agent fell for the wrong woman causing a domino effect thats puts many peoples' lives in danger. It wasn't intentianal. Will she be able to protect her sister and family? Who are the good guys and the bad guys?

This book brings up the topics our country is facing gun control and border security. The genre for "Over the Line" should have been Christian Political Suspense Romance instead of just Romance Suspense. There are two romances going on in "Over the Line". You have Gabriella's and Eli's relationship than you have her sister, Natalie's relationship. Natalie is a widowed paraplegic with two children.

There is a lot of back-story between Gabriella and Eli. The reason why Gabriella broke up with Eli was because she thought he was being unfaithful. Eli tried to explain, but Gabby just wouldn't listen to him showing she hasn't grown up yet.

Kelly Irvin did an amazing job of creating a fast moving plot and likeable characters. However there is a lot of characters causing me at times to get confused. Some characters actions didn't fit their character. Some of the dialogue throughout the book didn't sound very natural. The theme throughout the book is forgiveness. You will not find "Over the Line" a preachy religious story. Many of the characters get on their knees praying to God she can find her brother and no one else will get killed or hurt. Irvin made this a clean read. There isn't any sex scenes just mostly kissing and romance. It isn't filled with filthy language. There is violence and blood. It is mainly about family and forgiveness.

"Over the Line" isn't perfect, but I sure enjoyed reading it. I am a huge fan of thriller suspense books. I would recommend reading it. I learned many things about gun trafficking and the Mexican border.

I recevied a copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. This review is my honest opinion.

In this high-stakes romantic suspense novel where tensions mount on both sides of the border, bestselling author Kelly Irvin explores what happens when the past explodes against the present and the only person you can turn to is the one who broke your heart.

When a college student dies at Gabriella’s feet after muttering her brother’s name, vicious gun smugglers believe she knows too much. And they’re determined to make sure she suffers the same fate. With no one else to turn to, Gabriella reunites with her former fiancé, homicide detective Eli Cavazos, to investigate the dead man’s murder and her brother’s disappearance. In a desperate race against time, Gabriella and Eli are determined to clear her brother and find him before the gun smugglers can kill them both. Bit by bit, they tear away the masks worn by men masquerading as law-abiding citizens. No one can be trusted. Working as a team forces Gabriella and Eli to face the problems that ended their relationship. She realizes she’s the one who needs to learn to forgive, but Eli must also learn to trust her with his secrets. This ragtag team must fight a powerful ring of criminals protected by the very institutions that should prosecute them in an all-out battle that may cost them their lives.

My Thoughts: Author Kelly Irvin’s Over the Line is an action-packed suspense novel that is filled with murder, weapons trafficking and a strained relationship and romance.

A well written fast-paced novel that readers will enjoy, as the author Kelly Irvin does a great job of keeping the reader's interest in this fast-paced suspense.

The novel is based on a missing ATF agent Jack Benoit and a gun trafficking ring in Texas. The novel has a great base for a murder mystery, but as I was reading it felt like I was reading a sequel to a previous novel, but this is a stand-alone book. I just felt like I was missing something in the beginning with Gabriella and Eli, and what happened with Natalie and the rest of the family; and how Eli was shot.

This is a wonderful story well worth the reading, the reader will not be disappointed. Great for those that love a combination of suspense and romance.

My Thoughts on Over the Line:
I wasn’t sure what to think of this book at first. It seemed to be slow. I wasn’t sure I was going to connect with the characters. But the more I read the more I wanted to read and the more invested in the story I became. This is one of those books where I say to give it two or three chapters before you decide it’s not for you.

Gabriella is a baker. She specializes in desserts. I could definitely be her best friend as I love to bake! But unlike her, I also like to eat the treats I bake when I’m stressed out.

Eli has a history and a past that he’s not willing to share with anyone. Not even his once fiancee Gabriella. That’s why they’re no longer engaged. Or at least that’s what she says. He has a different theory.

But right now the only thing that matters is keeping her safe after a man dies in front of her after saying her name. Was he trying to tell her something? Where is her brother? Is he in danger? Is she in danger?

Gabriella has another sister Natalie who is in a wheelchair. Natalie has two children. Gabriella blames herself for Natalie being in a wheelchair and with her being a widow. She shoulders all the blame internally and tries to make it better at every turn.

Natalie just wants freedom. She wants to be herself without everyone just seeing her chair.

Maybe they’ll both get a second chance. But first, they have to find their brother Jake. Well, maybe first they have to stay alive. Someone knows where Jake is and someone wants something that they don’t have.

Lots of actions and lots of characters in this story. Occasionally I had to go back to figure out which character we were talking about. The characters are relatable. Writing is clear and clean, easy to read, flows well. A good read that I recommend.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

** “No, being good isn’t enough. We all fall short. We make terrible mistakes. But when someone we love does this, we forgive them. Just as God forgives us. Haven’t you ever done something terrible, something awful, and been forgiven?” **

Kelly Irvin weaves an incredible tale of forgiveness while tackling the gun smuggling and border patrol epidemic in “Over the Line.”

When a young man with her ATF agent brother’s name on his lips dies right in front of her, Gabriella Benoit must turn to her ex-boyfriend Homicide Detective Eli Cavazos — a man she no longer fully trusts — for help.

As they delve into the disappearance of her brother Jake, they must also dive deep into their continued love for each other, overcoming mistrust and offering forgiveness. Will they be able to heal their relationship while also solving a case that involves kidnappings, murders and gun smuggling?

Irvin does a great job of creating a suspenseful thriller with just enough romance to satisfy the lovers of love. She brings together the worlds of law enforcement and journalism to create a story that leaves the readers guessing who can be truly trusted, and who is involved in the series of crimes. She develops very relatable characters with major flaws, as well as delightful supporting characters like Gabbys sister Natalie and her reporter friend Deacon.

Besides being an intense romantic thriller, “Over the Line” is filled with many great lessons, like craving a clean start and a second chance; we all have to answer for our own sins; dealing with regret, hurt and disappointment; in everything God works for our good; being a good and faithful servant; God calls us to help others on their journeys; letting go of bitterness; the power of secrets; and God’s grace and mercy are never ending.

Trust and forgiveness are also huge themes that run throughout the book. This story reminds us that we all fall short and need forgiveness.

“Over the Line” is a standalone novel. Fans of authors like Lynette Eason, Terri Blackstock and Irene Hannon will enjoy Irvin’s latest offering.

Five stars out of five.

"Over the Line" by Kelly Irvin is a novel that keeps you reading from the first sentence to the end. It is filled with suspense and surprises. This story is about second chances. But, it is more about learning to forgive and trust.

On a fun side, a reader might learn some Spanish. There are a few Spanish words in the story and there is a glossary at the front of the book and it was fun to flip back to it why reading.

I am really glad that the author never wrote swear words in the story even through there was plenty of violence and mentions that these words were said. I wish more authors would do that.

At times, while reading "Over the Line" I felt like I was missing the background information on why Gabriella and Eli were no longer dating. I understand the circumstances that surrounded the breakup, but perhaps the author could have written a first book to give us background on the characters. I just felt like this book would have been better as the second in a series. Don't let my opinion about having a series prevent you from reading the book. It is an exciting story that will keep you guessing who to trust and not trust. While I enjoyed the relationship between Natalie and another main character, I am hoping for a follow up book to explore their relationship more.

I think the story does a good job of describing that gun trafficking is a major problem that is done by many that has no idea of how wrong it is and the damage it can do and that once you are in you it is hard to get out and might end up killed if you try to get out.

I was really shocked at who was involved, and I even knew who one of the bad guys was going to turn out to be, but I WAS SO WRONG!

I think my favorite part of this book is the ending! Now, don't read the ending until you read the rest of the book first. If you do read this book, I don't think you will be disappointed.

I received a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit.
