The murder of Alex Waverly, a highly decorated detective assigned to the LAPD's clandestine Anti-Terrorist Division, appears to be an open-and-shut case of domestic violence turned deadly.
Circumstances are not exactly what they seem, however, as Fey Croaker discovers when the chief of police removes responsibility for the investigation from the department's Robbery-Homicide Division and assigns it to her with instructions to wrap it up "quick and tidy. No muss, no fuss."
Dropped into the middle of a power struggle between the chief of police and Vaughn Harrison, the department's deputy chief in charge of overseeing specialized investigation units -- including Robbery-Homicide Division and Alex Waverly's Anti-Terrorist Division -- Fey is torn between her loyalty to the Old Guard and following the razor's edge of integrity in a world filled with lies and deceptions.
Struggling to overcome her personal demons, especially the death of her lover, Fey and her appealing crew, the dynamic Arch Hammersmith and Rhonda Lawless (a.k.a. Hammer and Nails), Brindle Jones, Abraham Cohen (a.k.a. Alphabet), and Fey's second-in-command Monk Lawson, courageously search for the truth, no matter what the cost. Racing to stay ahead of the rising body count, they quickly become moving targets in their struggle to stop a south-of-the-border terrorist from striking at the very heart of Los Angeles.
Riveting in itsplausibility, "Tequila Mockingbird" confirms Paul Bishop's place among the best of the police thriller writers and shows Fey Croaker and her team at the top of their form.
A thirty-five year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, Paul Bishop’s career has included a three year tour with his department's Anti-Terrorist Division and over twenty-five years’ experience in the investigation of sex crimes. His Special Assaults Units regularly produced the highest number of detective initiated arrests and highest crime clearance rates in the city. Twice honored as Detective of the Year, Paul also received the Quality and Productivity Commission Award from the City of Los Angeles.
As a nationally recognized interrogator, Paul starred as the lead interrogator and driving force behind the ABC TV reality show Take The Money And Run from producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Based on his expertise in deception detection, he currently conducts interrogation seminars for law enforcement, military, and human resource organizations.
Paul has published twelve novels, including five in his L.A.P.D. Detective Fey Croaker series. He has also written numerous scripts for episodic television and feature films. He currently writes and edits the Fight Card series of hardboiled boxing novel under the pseudonym Jack Tunney.
This was the 3rd book in the Fey Croaker series and it was the best so far. The storyline picked up from the last series. Her Brother was dead and her boyfriend died leaving her needing her job to help her cope with the 2 deaths. This story was awesome. It shows how old School police officers are having trouble with modern day Politics interacting with their ability to do the job. It also shows that the Old School Police officers respect someone for the experience rather than someone with the Education. The story also highlights the battle with Mexican Drug Cartels and the problems the LA Police Department has with them. The Ending was anticlimactic but it was a fitting conclusion to a great story.
Thanks Paul Bishop for such an amazing book. I haven't money to travel so I journey through books. I would have loved being a detective but it was not meant to be. So thanks for the adventure!
My first Bishop read. Overall, I liked how the characters were developed and the story line progressed. Not a page-turner, but did keep me interested and thinking. I will try another Bishop and see how it fares.
If, like me, you enjoy Joseph Wambaugh-style cop novels but you missed Paul Bishop’s TEQUILA MOCKINGBIRD when it first came out, grab this new eBook edition. It’s the third novel in his Fey Croaker series, but you don’t need to have read any of the others to understand or enjoy it. Bishop’s descriptions of the inner workings of the Los Angeles Police Department and what it's like to be a homicide detective are fascinating in themselves and ring true because they're based on his actual experience as a 35-year veteran of the LAPD. The murder mystery involved is twisty and not easily guessed. And, Bishop's ability to write from the perspective of the troubled female homicide detective Fey Croaker reflects his skill as an author. I really like Fey’s complex, evolving character and the other well-drawn characters who make up her team of homicide-solving pros. I’m glad Bishop's entire Fey Croaker series is coming out in new eBook editions. I’m hooked.
This is such a fun little book! Subtitled "Cocktails with a Literary Twist," this is a compilation of bar recipes. These recipes have names like "Are You There God? It's Me, Margarita," "The Last of the Mojitos," and "A Farewell to Amaretto." There are also non-alcoholic recipes (for recovering readers) and bar food such as "Olives 'n' Twist," Prawn Quixote," and "The Deviled Egg Wears Prada." Each recipe acknowledges the real book and author with background information. Much fun!
Another very good Fey Croaker book. I read this one out of sequence, but I don't think it mattered. I was surprised at the length of this one, but it didn't make any difference to the quality of the story. I rate this one 4.8 stars.
