This pretty much lost me when there was a rape scene thrown in. While I can intellectually understand why the creator might have thought, within the context of yaoi and Old Skool Romance, it was an okay thing, it really is NOT, and it ruined the story for me.

Are we all going to collectively ignore how toxic their relationship is? Taichi basically was physically abusive towards Naoto and sexually assaulted him when he tried to leave the house. What do you mean he has matured? He needs therapy to deal with his anger management issues.

DNF'd because abuse and rape are treated as a part of the rocky romance process, which is bs and teaches people the worst possible thing. What the actual fuck.

This was not what I expected. I thought I was going to get a cute romance, but it was just a typical toxic yaoi romance. Excessive sex, no communication, and some sexual assault that's completely brushed over. They don't really talk about anything really, but it's all happily ever after in the end. There's two more volumes though so maybe more happens? I have them so I'll continue, but for the most part the story itself was disappointing.

This was supergood and surpassed my high expectations. A story about two guys who were together in high school, but then split up because of a lack of communication. It takes them a while to get things right the second time. This is a really well done BL manga that captures the insecurity that comes with relationships where there isn't marriage as a final goal. I really loved this.

Great art buuuuuut... A very unhealthy relationship. Some scenes of dubious to no consent that shouldn't be translated as a loving or consensual. :(

TW: Rape!!! This would've been quite a sweet story if it wasn't for the weird and unnecessary rape between the two main characters, there's literally no need for it and they just brush it off like it was nothing.

I've giving this two stars mainly because I still enjoy Tanaka's art, how she pokes fun at some of her characters and premise, and how Fumi Matsuyama is the sweetest and most understanding angel of the entire volume. She made this so much easier to read. I wouldn't have been able to finish this if the only two characters were Naoto and Taichi, and I don't typically stop reading manga volumes partway through.

The relationship is Escape Journey is not a great one. I appreciate the angle Tanaka was trying to go for on Naoto's end (in my mind, it hinted at Japanese society's stigma towards gay relationships), but it didn't really work in a way that I liked. A lot of the conflict and strife both characters were in could have been avoided if they just talked to each other. It's annoying when writers decide that it's okay to make rape a plot device in order to move the story along, then brush it off like it wasn't anything serious. I understand it's a staple in BL, but other writers (and artists) have handled it better.

Although there are two more volumes, the ending to this one felt like the ending to the series, so I'm stopping here. I don't have to be as objective with Yarichin, Tanaka's other work, but since this is a realistic college romance, I expected more.

CW: Rape

I'm not giving this one a rating because I have no idea what to rate it! 95% of Escape Journey was good - pretty art, flawed characters that you still wanted to see end up together, and a surprisingly poignant arc about how to define your relationship with the love of your life...when marriage, kids, and even basic acceptance seem out of reach. For the first 2/3 of the volume I thought I was reading a really solid gay manga (albeit one with a...questionable understanding of how male anatomy works).

Buuuut then there's those three pages. Literally three pages out of 100+, a rape scene that absolutely did not need to be there and that left a nasty taste in my mouth for the rest of the series. No, it is never satisfactorily addressed - and I didn't expect it to be, because that type of scene is a relic of ~yaoi manga~ that I thought died sometime around 2009. I'm so frustrated that it blights an otherwise really enjoyable series.

A pretty decent gay romance about a closeted couple who broke up in high school but find themselves thrown together again in a new friendship group in college. Naoto is a glasses-wearing, extroverted flirt. Taichi is a handsome introvert who gets jealous easily. I might have went 3-stars, but there is one jarring scene of domestic violence and rape that the victim seems to shrug off pretty quickly, as if this were a 1980s soap opera.

Heads up: There are pretty explicit sex scenes despite what I assume is purposely inept self-censorship.

The first volume seems complete unto itself, but I have two more volumes on hand, so let's see where this goes.

1st: mature audiences only. very graphic content.
2nd: idk. there was one particular scene that bothered me a lot. trigger warning for physical violence and rape. it was addressed in some way, but never correctly in my opinion. also, the communication was so damn lack luster ...
i have mixed feelings on this.

For the overall volume, taking into account story, art, smuttiness, ect. I'll give it 2 stars.

Great art, delicious smut 90% of the time; but that's where the good stuff stops on this train ride that diverts to hell.

The relationship between these two characters is toxic and even violent at times; their history is the same as it was a couple years before so it's nothing new. They both seem to have the emotional range of a teaspoon and I get no real feeling out of either of them, they fall flat, there's no love. About halfway through this volume they get in a fight, start hitting each other and the scene ends in RAPE. The perpetrator physically forces the victim to the floor, asks if the victim thought his scrawny self could really fight back, and the perpetrator says he can't stand to see the victim's face.

That's what they are you know, RAPIST and VICTIM.

There is NO acknowledgement for the rest of the volume that what happened was in fact rape, it's regarded as a mistake and both characters act like it didn't happen after the perpetrator says "I'm sorry."

I've read series like "Don't be Cruel" and "Finder" with dubious consent, they're some of my favorites despite walking a fine line; in later volumes "Don't be Cruel" even acknowledges the wrongs one character has made and aims to make amends. This series however has blatantly walked over that line, ignoring it completely as if it weren't there; I'll be genuinely surprised if it's ever acknowledged. In this volume the victim actually voices the words "No" and "Stop"; which means it's no longer dubious, it's RAPE.

My friends will tell you that I'll read almost anything and enjoy a lot of bad/iffy things, but this is not something I can support. This book treats rape like it's an expected everyday occurrence and nobody bats an eye.

07.2017:

Really, really good. Ogeretsu Tanaka's stories always feel so real and never superficial to me, not only because of the story itself but because of the art. The way the emotions are displayed through words and drawings feels so authentic. The story has many different facets, there's cute moments, happy moments, sad moments, fearful moments and they are always brought together exceptionally well.

My overall perspective on this was good. The relationship is a bit toxic, but a lot of that toxicity comes from the idea of what can two men in a relationship become?

Naoto and Taichi are clearly in love, but can they be anything more than friends? More than lovers? What is the next step for two men? Is there a next step?

This is a question that plagues Naoto for most of the story. I really enjoyed the exploration of this question in the form that is was done. Yes, they had a bad relationship. But much of the toxicity comes from this unknown. It's rooted deeply in homophobic ideals, heteronormative beliefs, and internalized homophobia.

There is one tense moment in the book that cannot be overlooked. TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE. Taichi rapes Naoto. There's just no other way to explain this scene. I am not upset that this scene happened. What I am upset by is the fact that it is never discussed. It's treated as... well, as nothing at all. Just a spat between a couple. And that is not an okay thing.

Do I still recommend this book? Yes. With very stern TW attached.

So, first things first, content warning for rape.

If this was a standalone it would be a no for me because of how they handled the main issues. Spoiler: they don't. I am lacking quite a bit in the character development department and I do hope there is more of that on the next volume and in that case I think an omnibus edition may have done better as story arc.
I do honestly think that using rape as a "plot device" is kinda lazy and does not add to the story. It could have been told differently as there were quite a lot of problems with the characters already. To be fair, I found it quite focused on the sex, although I understand that it makes sense in the story. However, that is just my personal preference.

I do really love the art style tho!! In that aspect I think it is sooooo worth it.

In that sense, plot wise, it would have been 2/5 GR scale, "it was ok", but adding the art style I will bump it up to 3/5.

Anche no.

This was honestly the most pleasant surprise I've read all year so far. I went into this knowing there is non con, and I expected to not like it. But dang it, it was too darn cute not to love it!
We follow Taichi and Naoto, two college students who used to date in high school. Now they're trying to rekindle their relationship.
This was such a wonderful manga. The art is stunning. The characters feel real. And it was so cute, I was brought to tears. This was exactly the manga I needed to read right now.

I saw the small explicit box on the cover, but I didn't fully process that. haha
I don't really read yaoi so dunno if I should rate it. It's written by a woman and has a lot of problematic tropes a lot of people are aware of. I know people can like this and acknowledge the issues. This crosses my personal line. If you like it, okay, but if you're similar to me maybe consider a few things:
Includes: domestic violence (physical altercation) and rape

I don't completely shit on it (i think) I include some other thoughts at the very end.

Once it crosses over to the above list I personally feel very uncomfortable with it. The main couple went out before, but had a break up and once they ran into each other again in college the romance started as well. But so did the issues that drove them apart before.
Hase has a way of not being emotionally vulnerable with Taichi. Once they become lovers again everytime they're conversation shifts to more emotional things, or Hase gets jealous he initiates sex.
At some point Taichi gets tired of it and asks for them to just watch a movie. Hase tries to initiate again, but Taichi says no. They argue. Physically hit each other (Hase hits him first). And then Hase starts to penetrate Taichi. I know rape in yaoi is common (sadly), but it doesn't have to be. I'll leave it at that.
I think it's also stalker-like to change majors to follow Taichi.
I think Hase hasn't changed. He admits it himself. Just because he admits it doesn't mean its okay now.
Also after Taichi was raped he alienated himself from his friends. He was hurt. But eventually he went back to school and put on a happy face and it broke my heart. His thoughts were on how to remain friends with Hase, but that is the authors doing. As if he'd feel comfortable ever being around him-
But the author had to make Taichi seem like it wasn't a big deal, otherwise how is it romantic?- stopped being romantic when the love interest is a stalker rapist but oookayy.
There was also a subplot where one of the girls liked Hase, Taichi tried to set them up. Not much interesting happened there. Just a plot device for jealousy and Hase to ultimately profess his true feelings.

Also theres drunk sex near the beginning which was the first red flag. Shoulda known.

Problematic shit aside-if it didn't romanticize this relationship it shows how complex and messy relationships can be. If it wasn't seen as a romance it would be a good example of toxic relationships with domestic violence- yeah.

There was a part where Taichi was wanting to name what they had. He wanted them to be family because he wanted to be close to Hase who was keeping him emotionally distant. I thought that was interesting. Not friends, more than lovers. What word?
Also Taichi resigned their future cause what would they be able to be? They can't be an out gay couple. They can't have a typical family. When the world around you doesn't accept you or your dreams they become impossible. When you don't see yourself in society, you don't exist.
And it's weird to say this yaoi reminded me of those things, but it's true. So maybe it wasn't all bad? Nah it still disappointed me and made me a bit sad.

Also use a condom! Not just sometimes! Protect yourself.

[ ★★★,5 / 5 ]

[ cw/tw : blurred-lines-of-consent, rape. ]

This series started out great. Like another story in 恋とはバカであることだ Koi to wa baka de aru koto da 's universe, this story kicks off from high school. They met, became best friends, understand each other, then falling in lust love. Along the way, they found out that they weren't actually compatible and ended their relationship on a bitter note, with an unresolved feelings. Years later they "unexpectedly" reunited in college, once again trying to start a new beginning, while wondering how to label their relationship: is it just-friends or boyfriends.

Out of the 恋とはバカであることだ Koi to wa baka de aru koto da 's universe, I think this spin-off series has a lot more potential than the rest of story. Characters circumstances and backstory are well formed. What I appreciate about this series more than others is the existence of female characters, who not only act as background characters, but actually got involved in the plot and trigger some conflicts. That gives it a more realistic vibes. The only downside of this manga are the kinda blurred-lines-of-consent ((taichi was sober while naoto was drunk as hell)) and the rape scene. The first case, okay, it's probably important for the plot progression. But the rape one's was unnecessary ((it kinda ruining the plot tbh because they never really solved it and just skims over it)). I know Taichi is probably not that bad, he has traumas, inferiority complex, bad at communicating, and all—but it's not a justification that his actions are excusable. Every single goddam time he gets jealous he ends up either 1) raping Naoto or 2) fucking him senseless. He hasn't changed since high school. Man, all they need is actually a heart-to-heart talk. Both of them are equally stubborn and immature. They lack of communication ((ofc since like 70% of all they do is fucking LOL)). But if the problems are solved immediately, the story won't be exciting and will end in one volume only. Yeah, we need that soap opera dramas that frustrates us and drains our feelings. VIVA SLOWBURN \(m)/

Hope to see Taichi's development in the next volume.
((p.s: c'mon i know you're not a total jerk, taichi! treats naoto better so you won't regret!))

This series had such potential. I'm a bit conflicted, but I think I'm mainly disappointed. It could have been so good.
Naoto and Taichi dated in high school, but it didn't work out. And when they bump into each other in college, they end up with the same friends, and then they can't help but start something again. They have an attraction, but ones a flirt and the other gets jealous/possessive. This causes conflict, and since they don't know how to talk to each other, they end up fighting all the time.
In the beginning, they think they've learned. The jealous one thinks he's got control of himself. But clearly nothing has changed.
This has an interesting set-up, and they've got really good friends. Fumi, one of the girls who originally crushed on one of them, ends up being really cool about the situation and moves on to another guy, and she's probably my favorite part of this volume.
But about halfway through the volume, they threw in a rape scene. It was rough and harsh, with crying and very clear protests of “No” and “Stop”, with the possessive one forcing himself on the other, after having a fistfight. I hated every second of it, and it read realistically awful. But afterward, there was no real acknowledgement of him being raped, and instead the victim apologizes for their fight.
I can usually deal okay with some non-consent, depending on the form and how it's handled. It was handled awfully here, and the aftereffects only made it worse. It left a bad taste in my mouth, and I really don't intend to read any more.
