Is this the worst textbook ever? With this presentation of text, pictures and ideas, this is almost criminally unhelpful and I have more than foundation knowledge in both psychology and biology. If you want to go for depth, like med school level of depth (in an enlightening way), try the recently retitled textbook by Breedlove, "Behavioral Neuroscience" If you want a more accessible one, probably Pinel's "Biopsychology". The gold standard is very much still Kalat's "Biological Psychology".
I appreciated the information in this book as I went through a Biological Psychology course in college. The information is straightforward and the pictures help me to understand the processes described in the text. It is easier to read than other neuroscience texts I have read.
The organization of the chapters is a bit confusing, so it is more helpful to jump around rather than read beginning to end.
A lot of interesting info here, but Carlson wrecks it with his horrible way of ordering everything. He goes back and forth in between concepts when it would be so much easier to just go in a straight line with all of the material.
