A Valentine’s Day Wedding at Marlow House? Love is in the air—along with secrets—some are deadlier than others. Will secrets from Clint Marlow’s past come back to haunt Walt and Danielle?
Bobbi HolmesIt was a struggle for me to finish this. Multiple times I wanted to stop, mostly because I was getting pissed off. First, we get it, Danielle is rich, Walt is rich, Ian still doesn't fully support Lily when his sister is around, Joe is still a fucking tool, and Kelly is...well Kelly. We. Get. It. No one would start with number 20 of the series. If they do, that's weird, but you do not need to explain things that have already been established early on. If anything a brief update would do. Seriously, though. I also love how life STILL revolves around Danielle, and everyone else is just puns and part of that revolving cycle. Danielle's needs are more important or seem superior to others, and her intellect is far above everyone else. If I had a friend who questioned everything I did, gave advice when I didn't need any nor asked for it, mothered me, or felt the need to play perfectly over my experiences in life they would not be my friend. Quit portraying Danielle like some glorious person--it's not realistic. Now, for what really grated on my nerves.
1) Why would you write your lead character as some "know it all" person when confronting pregnancy, who has NEVER been pregnant herself? Why did you not chose your lead character to be more supportive of her best friend's pregnancy, than to have her probe and ask questions that are insensitive and judgmental? You should not have to over-explain your characters' actions or motives when it's in poor taste when you could have written them in a more positive light.
2) Why would you write your lead character as judgmental in these pregnancy conversations, especially towards her best friend? I found the character's behavior appalling. On that same note, I found it appalling how you depicted everyone else who mentions this pregnancy as daft, uneducated of the reproductive system and reproductive rights of women, and not able to understand privacy, especially between a husband and wife. It really makes me wonder if the author has not educated herself, so she wanted to include the research she found in the book. Which just made her lead character very judgmental and not supportive, and everyone else around her as complete ass-hats.
3) There are some things that are no one's business. The author had an opportunity to showcase some of these discussions in the 21st. century light, where women support other women and do not judge, or question their motives and actions, and who are not insensitive to one another. Shame on you for not taking that opportunity. Have you not had conversations like this before? You wrote your lead character to be portrayed as confused when her best friend decided she wanted to wait to tell people she was pregnant until she went to the doctor to confirm. Are you f-ing kidding me? Your lead character was also insensitive when her best friend explained that she wanted to be cautious as she has symptoms that could cause her to lose the pregnancy. "You'll be fine." "Nothing is going to happen." "I can understand, but you'll be fine." No. Just no. Good job at showing what you should NEVER say nor do when confronted with something like this. Bravo. I know some women who would think they would be supportive by saying something like this, but I also know a lot more people (not just women) who would never say something like that. Instead, they would support and know that it's not what's good for them, but good for the other. This isn't the only instance in the book, but this scene where you made her best-friend have to explain her reasons for not telling people, explain why she didn't want to tell her husband right away, and explain some of her feelings was not right and insensitive. Your lead character didn't need to be a know it all, perfect in every way gal, and probing. She needed to be quiet and supportive. I'm sorry you didn't write the lead character like that. You could have taught a powerful moment between two friends.
4) PLEASE research how Birth Control works. PLEEEEAAASSSSEEEEE!!!!! Please research reproductive rights, struggles, and the reproductive system. PLEEEEAAASSSSSSEEEEEE!!!!!! Also, observe how people converse with one another, what compassion looks like, how to show empathy, and how a woman can be completely complicated and chaotic, but completely capable, strong, and smart at the same time.
I shouldn't be all bent out of shape over this, I mean you also do a good job at over-explaining why people would ask or do something in the book, so I shouldn't be, right? I found it exhausting. I find it exhausting every time you do in your books. Why did you feel the need to explain and excuse your characters' behaviors, especially if you didn't write them in a good light, in this book? I can excuse previous times in other books, but this was unacceptable. I'm sorry your editor didn't catch this, as well, so shame on them. This was awful. I expected more out of this series. I expected more out of the author. This book just confirmed my loathing over Danielle and several characters of this book. So congratulations, you did a great job!
On the whole I love this series, but this one is just grating on my nerves. I dislike both Kelly & Joe more and more with each book, and think that they are definitely suited for each other given how selfish, super judgmental and stuck up they both are. And I'm also with Brian on the money thing--it gets old hearing about how Danielle, Walt, Chris, Lily, Ian etc keep having so many windfalls. Like seriously, couldn't someone who could actually use the money catch a break rather than the main characters getting more and more money with each passing book? But the main thing that is bothering me with this one is how is being portrayed: I'm still planning on finishing the book and continuing the series, but this one is a big miss for me, and I hope it's edited in the future to remove all of the inaccuracies.
I am so disappointed in this book. The plot was good decent, and my favorite characters are all happy as can be. But Kelly is awful and it made Lily’s and Danielle’s big moments awful because she was a part of them. - - - - -
To add to my review from February 2020 (above) I hate Kelly. I hate Joe. I'm starting to really hate Lilly and Ian's relationship. On my second sweep through the series, I now understand why I stopped at this book. I am downgrading this to 3 stars to 1 star.
Also, did Holmes never have a kid herself? She's so... misinformed about being pregnant, pregnancy symptoms, and just the idea that women have choices about themselves and their bodies. I have never been pregnant myself, and I still know more than she does.
I’m really confused reading this series. Is the author wanting the reader to absolutely loathe Joe and Kelly? Joe really thinks he and Dani are friends but I don’t think so, not as good as he makes them out to be. He’s a jackass and time after time let’s his personal feelings cloud his judgment being a cop. And Kelly...my god. I cannot stand her. She’s nosy. She’s whiney. She puts down Dani, Lily, and Heather in front of others and when she’s thinking to herself. She’s upset that she feels like she’s not included in the Beach Drive group...she thinks she should be simply because Ian is her brother? They are his friends. Im feeling like Lily doesn’t like her a ton due to how much Kelly has talked poorly about Dani to Lily’s face. Dani knows Kelly is usually running her mouth about Dani to others. Why in the world would they want her over more? Worst plot point was having her start dating Deputy Dumbass and having her move to town. I cannot stand her and find myself rolling my eyes, literally, at her thoughts and dialogue.
And dear god, Chris and Dani never actually dated. Why do the characters in this book keep speaking of a relationship that never actually happened? He kissed her once on New Years Eve. Then quickly at the airport when he left town. They never spoke of either kiss to each other. Then when he kissed her last after that trip, she wasn’t into it and he felt it. They discussed that it probably wasn’t going to happen. So WHY doesn’t that get said more specifically when Kelly and Joe drone on and on about how it’s a shame they broke up? They never actually dated!!
I thought I would get bored with the series after Danielle and Walt got married. Nope. I do not know how the author keeps the storyline fresh, but she does. Great series.
I love this series and I'm so glad they're on audiobook. If I wasn't enjoying it so much I wouldn't have stuck with it so long. But this one was not my favorite. The whole storyline about Clint's real estate fraud was confusing and, frankly, boring. It got in the way of what should have been the culmination of us waiting 20 books for--Walt and Danielle's wedding! But, no. The author spends so much time on the past fraud allegation and thefts and accusations of bigamy that the wedding was not only put on the back burner but the heat was completely turned off the pot! We know that nothing they throw at Danielle and Walt they won't be separated so the lame attempts to stop the wedding were just irritants. Lily and Ian's news was great but I'm REALLY starting to dislike Kelly--a lot. I'll keep reading as long as they're on Audible because I do like the series, most of the characters, and the mysteries.
Now that Walt's book is such a success (there's even talk about making it into a movie), all deeds of Clint's are coming to light. There are things in his past that Walt has no idea about, but that's not about to stop these nefarious types! So while, Danielle and Walt are preparing an event of a lifetime, they need to keep their wits about them before someone brings them all down.
Another excellent book in the series, Daniels and Walt have even more problems than ever before as three groups arrive with their own agendas. Just to add to the fray a new neighbour is causing problems too and there are family problems for Lily. A must read for all fans of supernatural and mystert
For the most part I am enjoying these books. My biggest issue has been the lack of proofing (for lack of a better word right now) on the recordings & I’m not referring to just this audiobook. It has been an issue in a number of them. 1) The narrator using the wrong voice for a character which can be very confusing. 2) Sentences being repeated. 3) Most egregious is that the title of this book not being correct in the recording.
I find it shocking that issues like this were not caught before the books were released. I honestly don’t know how the audiobook world works but I would have thought someone would listen to them after the recording has been completed & would have the narrator correct the errors.
I’d give this book less than 1 star if I could. I hated almost all the characters and forced myself to slog through this book. I was 70% of the way through the book before anyone died. Kelly is a nosy and entitled b!tch. Joe is just insufferable on his own. This book is also filled with an impressive about of inaccurate information about pregnancy and conception. We live in the digital age. The author clearly didn’t take the time to google the correct information. If the next book in the series is this bad, I’m giving up.
Normally I really like this series, but this book was just ridiculous. Lilly gets pregnant and the facts that are stated over and over are just ignorant (example: pregnant women cant drink coffee). It was hard to get past that.
I keep listening to this series because it is easy to follow and to get on audiobook. It's just okay for me. I'd actually give this one a 2.5, but I'm feeling generous today.
I love this series but this book slightly missed the mark. I still love all of the main characters and enjoy seeing their lives progress. However, my dislike for Kelly and Joe continues to mount. Kelly is overly nosey and takes small snippets of information believes them to be fact and passes them onto Joe without actually making sure the information is correct. Its literally like reading about a high school adult who always wants to have the scoop first and doesn't care if it is right, wrong or indifferent.
Changes are happening on Beach Dr and not all of them for the better. The new neighbor Pearl is a treat and I am interested to see how she will cause problems for Scooby Doo and the Gang. She sounds like a true peach! Clint's past comes back to haunt him and stir up some trouble for Walt and the group, resulting in one murder at the B&B. Finally, I am interested to see what they do about having two rooms once they no longer have to hide that they always stay in Walt's. With a secret stairway between the two it would seem unlikely you would want to rent it out.
I absolutely love this series! The author keeps coming up with unique and entertaining off-shoots and complications of the ghost theme. I love the friendly ghosts who show up to help Danielle when there's trouble or when she needs someone spied on.
By now the readers, well most of us, are half in love with Walt Marlow ourselves. Walt has become a successful man with old-world flavor. But his past as Clint Marlow keeps rearing its ugly head. In this book not one but THREE people from his checkered past come after him. One gets murdered and for awhile it's a toss-up who did it. Of course the reader knows that it could not have been Walt. And all this occurs while Danielle plans her Valentine's Day wedding to the love of her life.
I fear that I will soon be coming to the end of this series and I do not want that to happen! Please, keep on writing them, Ms. Holmes!
Just when you think it can't get better, it does!!
Wow! This was sooo good! I'm absolutely in love with this series! From the first book until this one I'm totally enthralled with them. The characters are brilliant and these story lines have me up all night. Can't seem to put the book down for even a second. I love all the ghosts and the interaction with the humans. Walt is so lovable and his old fashionedness is so endearing. Everything about these books is absolutely brilliant!! Wish I could put into words how I feel!! Thank you Bobbi Holmes for writing this extraordinary series!!!! Please don't stop!!!!
Book 20 has Danielle and Walt planning their public marriage ceremony. Of course there are unsavory greedy people who descend on Marlow House to try to blackmail money from Walt and/or Danielle. On top of that Kelly was extremely annoying and stirred up some malicious unfounded rumors - very unlikeable character all of the sudden. Overall pretty much the usual, bad guys get caught and the good guys have a party. The new neighbor is a worrisome problem that will show up again and who knows how much trouble Marie can cause now that she's harnessing the power to move things.

Yes, I’m still reading this series even though I give it low stars and complain. If you are a former ghost and have frequent ghost visitors and you’re rich, why would you still open your home to strangers? Why would you talk out loud, especially in places you can be overheard, or when your doors and windows are open, about ghosts or to ghosts? I feel like Chris is going to end up with a ghost wife at some point. And why is everyone so gossipy. It felt excessive in this book. I wish these books weren’t on hold and I could just hurry and be done with them.
Finally! Walt and Danielle are married. And if you didn't start at the beginning of the series and are shocked at the "spoiler," you deserve it for not starting at the beginning.
But, of course, the wedding cannot go off without a hitch or two. In this case, a few characters from Clint's past show up to try to fleece Walt's newfound fortune as a best-selling author. One of them ends up dead, and of course the ghostly bodyguard wasn't there to witness the dastardly deed, so Danielle, Walt, and the Chief have to figure it out.
Haunting Danielle book #20 The Ghost Who Said I Do. A good friend of mine recommended this series to me a few years ago. They are mysteries with the main character can see and talk to ghosts. In book one The Ghost of Marlowe House, Danielle inherits a haunted house. I have enjoyed the mysteries, friendships, romances, and adventures of the characters throughout the series. If you like cozies with excitement but not gore you may enjoy them too.
(Rating based on other books in series only) This is the third blah one in a row, but this wasn’t as bad as the last one. I can’t stand Kelly or Joe. Honestly what is the point of them? So many people from Clint’s past showing up at once and almost a year after the accident was silly. Poor Walt he just wants to live his life. Why is Ian such an ass to Lily when Kelly is around? There are so many toxic issues with these books but I keep reading them.
Great book, great series. I am rereading all the Haunting Danielle books. Out of order but since I remember a lot of the stuff that I would need to know it doesn't affect the fact they are out of order. It has been seven or eight years since I read some of them. The books are always interesting and filled with ghosts and spirits. You suspend belief while reading and it seems totally probable that the things can actually happen.
Another fun read in this series. If you are put off by the ghost aspect, there is nothing remotely scary in this series. Have read them all and always pre-order the next one. The characters are interesting and the story lines are just complex enough to have you guessing who the murderer is. Reminds me of the old TV show Topper, friendly helpful spirits.
I don`t want to write any spoilers, but this is the best of the series which is already beyond terrific. These people have become so real that I may have to increase my meds. (Just kidding 😉). I suspect that the new neighbor is in for a special treat. Can't wait for the next exciting episode. Write faster, please.
Slightly different from previous style. While Walt settles in to using Clint's Body, other's start coming out of the woodwork, each seeming to have cause to blackmail Clint. But one is bringing a gun to the party and that means another body. Still a solid story following canon, But a tad slower in pace and flash. Already got book 21.
The Ghost Who Was Says I Do (Ha unting Danielle book 20
This book is another winner. I highly recommend all her books and different series. She writes wonderful characters v that you would like to meet. And great storylines in each book. I have read 20 books of Bobbi's and cannot wait to read book 21. I want to see if Lily and Ian have a boy or girl. Diana Romano
