I was curious how they could make Dracula a family friendly Disney story and the truth is… they couldn’t. Upon finishing this my immediate thought was: “That’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read.”
Don’t get me wrong - I love juvenile fiction, I love Dracula and I love classic Disney… but Dracula disneyfied doesn’t work!
I have no idea who the intended audience was for this. It’s too goofy (no pun intended) and silly for adults to enjoy, it seems way too complicated for kids (or even just anyone who hasn’t read Dracula) to follow and enjoy. At one point there’s an asterisk to explain Bobbies are a term for London police officers but then Goofy Van Helsing goes on to say “epistolary novels” just a few pages later… has to be some pretty smart kids reading this to understand that that means!
To some degree it reminded me of the Disney and WB shows I grew up with (Tale Spin, Darkwing Duck, Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, etc) - shows that made jokes that went way over most kids’ heads but were funny for adults. Unfortunately, the jokes in here were corny and not funny for adults either (saw someone say this was originally written in Italian and some of the jokes didn’t translate well, so maybe that’s why it didn’t work?).
Overall, disappointing for both adult me and my inner child.
