When I was a kid, I remember my mother reading Mickey Mouse comics to me (they were a huge deal in Italy at the time), so this style of graphic novel will always take me back to my childhood.
Both the artstyle and the kind of humour are so iconic in these works that every time I read a new one it it reminds me of all the others I read (for example, I remember having a volume of the Odyssey starring Donald Duck). Heck, even the lettering is the same! These Disney retellings have the ability of adapting the original story to their very peculiar style, while always, mysteriously, being able to remain extremely close to the original. Their artist are just the greatest!

*edit: I just found out the artist is Italian. I thought so since some of the puns didn't work well in English! 😜

description
description
description

description

description
description

Bruno Enna, Fabio Celoni, Mirka Andolfo
description

A really entertaining parody. Top notch artwork and print, perhaps not all the jokes carry as well in translation but I still laughed a lot.

I was pleasantly surprised by this. I am a huge fan of Dracula, so I was curious to see how Disney would do a kid-friendly adaptation with Mickey Mouse and friends. First, the artwork was amazing - suitable gothic while still comical. The story was a funny satire on the Dracula mythos that while G rated was also quite original. I have not read any other Mickey Mouse comics, but now I'm seriously tempted to.

Like Disney Frankenstein, the Mickey Mouse Dracula adaptation has great art and a funny, kid-friendly twist to the monster. Instead of being a blood-sucker, this Dracula is all about beets. Which is almost as gross.

I can't underline enough how cool the art. It's gorgeous, atmospheric, and gothic. It just happens to have Mickey, Minnie, and Goofy, too.

This was such a wonderfully charming adaptation of a classic tale, and the art style is beautiful.

Cute Disneyfied take on Stoker’s classic. A fun introduction for younger readers to the infamous count.

A silly adaptation where beets and beet juice substitute for blood. Many Disney characters fill the roles of Bram Stoker’s characters. Terrific artwork is lost on the small sized pages of this edition.

1. I have a huge soft spot for the Disney comics retellings of various stories- they riff off established legends and history very well and there are always tons of puns. I first encountered the Scarlet Pimpernel as a Donald Duck version known as the Scarlet Pumpernickel and I haven't forgotten it to date.

2. So anyway- this retelling seems far more detailed and closer to the original story (taking into account my admittedly patchy relationship with the Dracula novel) than the ones I can recall. I mean yes, the blood is replaced (rather hilariously) with beets. The Lucy-expy (Clarabelle) eventually and that's so weird it's funny, rather than so weird it's just weird.

3. I think my favorite character is Renfield!Black Pete because every scene with him in it made me laugh, body counts notwithstanding. But you know- Disney comics so they were probably knocked out or something. Whatever. Pete was still excellent.

4. Not gonna lie, I now want Disney versions of every single classic novel I can think of. //stares pitifully at Disney bigwigs

This was an adorable retelling that made it appropriate for kids while still keeping the same general flavor of the original.

This comic is hilarious. Unfortunately, I think you need to know the original Bram Stoker version of Dracula to get all the ridiculous jokes, so maybe younger kids won’t understand the humor, but I laughed out loud a ton. I wasn’t expecting much from this comic, so the fact that it was funny and coherent and entertaining was a pleasant surprise! I want to see more of these classic retellings with the Disney characters—Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, Frankenstein, etc.

I was curious how they could make Dracula a family friendly Disney story and the truth is… they couldn’t. Upon finishing this my immediate thought was: “That’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read.”

Don’t get me wrong - I love juvenile fiction, I love Dracula and I love classic Disney… but Dracula disneyfied doesn’t work!

I have no idea who the intended audience was for this. It’s too goofy (no pun intended) and silly for adults to enjoy, it seems way too complicated for kids (or even just anyone who hasn’t read Dracula) to follow and enjoy. At one point there’s an asterisk to explain Bobbies are a term for London police officers but then Goofy Van Helsing goes on to say “epistolary novels” just a few pages later… has to be some pretty smart kids reading this to understand that that means!

To some degree it reminded me of the Disney and WB shows I grew up with (Tale Spin, Darkwing Duck, Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, etc) - shows that made jokes that went way over most kids’ heads but were funny for adults. Unfortunately, the jokes in here were corny and not funny for adults either (saw someone say this was originally written in Italian and some of the jokes didn’t translate well, so maybe that’s why it didn’t work?).

Overall, disappointing for both adult me and my inner child.

I read this book as part of a project to add graphic novels to my classroom library.
This one did not work. It is supposed to be an adaptation in two ways (adaptation to graphic novel and to include the iconic cartoon characters) of Dracula. In my opinion, the adaptation stuck too close to the syntax of the older language as well as the plot beats (save for a replacement of blood with beats). I will not put this one on the classroom library list.

Terrible...just terrible! I've only read a few from this latest version of the Disney comics and just really not impressed. I felt the ones done by boom kids were much more readable. I get that dark horse is a bigger label and I like a lot of their titles but this was so badly done I don't have any interest in more.

I did not like this. I read another Mickey Mouse adaption of some classic story and wasn't a fan, but thought I'd give it another try with Dracula. Alas, I was not amused. I didn't really like the characters or the whole story plot. The only good thing were the illustrations. Although, I didn't like how the cow character was depicted sometimes. Overall I would not recommend this.

I have never been fond of the Italian Disney comics adaptations of classics. (There are been hundreds of them since the first appeared in 1948.) But the most recent are quite well crafted, and this one has the bombastic, sometimes breathtaking art of Fabio Celoni.

The art is great, but the Disney version of the tale (puns and all) is only mildly amusing.
