In his first full-length collection of poems, James Hawes explores themes as diverse as nature, travel, love, coleslaw and Steven Seagal, placing his subjects on equal ground, searching for empathy in even the most mundane of events. It is a book of memories of the everyday to the extraordinary and the sensations they arouse; finding humour where it can be found, but always taking time to ponder the mystery and miracle of it all.
Pure delight. A walk through Montreal as a young person discovering the city, falling in love, and then eventually growing together into a family. I love how it brought me right back to some of the feelings, smells, and sounds of some favorite spots in my favorite city. I felt like I was living right back in NDG, taking a morning walk for bacon and eggs and eventually meandering up to the mountain for an afternoon of discovery. Mixed in to that are warm and wistful lake memories, fishing, nature walks, all part and parcel of life in a city that holds nature close. Well done! I devoured it in one sitting!!
This is really wonderful and friendly book of poetry, the kind of poetry book that people who think they dislike poetry would like. It's also very funny at times. The poems, many of them spare and striking, are observational, anecdotal, often celebrating the seemingly trivial. A really human book.
With carefully chosen words, James is able to create little vignettes of daily life. I laughed (Stuffed Monkey), I cried (Ping), I longed (Poem for a Lovely Metro Cop) and I took a stroll through the neighbourhood (Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.) Time well spent!
The poems in this collection reach out to greet you. James has a voice that one does not tire of reading. These poems are masterfully written and a great pleasure to read.
