Malevolent and dark, the fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm are not for the faint-hearted. The stories were originally published in 1812 and form a vivid and fascinating body of work that is rich in folkloric significance. Replete with sinister characters and grotesque imagery, this collection is the perfect addition to our series of deluxe Gothic & Fantasy giftbooks, and features some of the lesser-known tales alongside favourites like Snow White, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, and Hansel and Gretel.
German philologist and folklorist Jakob Ludwig Karl Grimm in 1822 formulated Grimm's Law, the basis for much of modern comparative linguistics. With his brother Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786-1859), he collected Germanic folk tales and published them as Grimm's Fairy Tales (1812-1815).
Indo-European stop consonants, represented in Germanic, underwent the regular changes that Grimm's Law describes; this law essentially states that Indo-European p shifted to Germanic f, t shifted to th, and k shifted to h. Indo-European b shifted to Germanic p, d shifted to t, and g shifted to k. Indo-European bh shifted to Germanic b, dh shifted to d, and gh shifted to g.
I always found the brothers Grimm and their fairy tales fascinating, how can two people be so creative? Many of their fairy tales were modified and told over and over again pretty much everywhere, a few of them are now big Disney movies. I was always curious to read all their original fairy tales and I’m glad I did it, it was very worth it. I found it funny that although many of these are children’s tales the original versions are so bizarre and macabre, from Cinderella's sisters cutting their toes off to fit the shoe to Rapunzel’s prince falling from the tower and being blinded by falling with his eyes right into some plants, and Snow Whites waking up from her “deathly sleep” not with a kiss but because the prince took her casket away and the ride was so bumpy she eventually spits out the poisoned apple, very crazy and interesting.

Got around half way and when I started skimming the stories I decided that I wasn’t enjoying reading the book and will officially dnf the book after months of having it on my currently reading list 🤷🏼♀️
This is a very nice collection of the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. I expect that I'll read more of them at some point. For now, I've only read "Little Red-Cap" which is the old version of "Little Red Riding Hood". It was very like the other version I'd read earlier in the month.
Key differences: The huntsman rescued both Grandmother and Little Red-Cap; they stuff the wolf's stomach full of rocks and, when he gets up to run away from the huntsman, he drops dead. There's also a follow up story where Little Red-Cap has learned not to talk to strange wolves. Her and grandmother end up tricking that wolf into falling off the roof and drowning in a trough of water.
I enjoy the writing style. Some of these short stories had happy endings, others didn’t. Some were weirdly killed off characters. Very strange, but a good read. The only thing that bothers me is when the stories repeat themselves but have a different ending. It really confuses me. But if you’re interested, I’d say try it out.
The entire collection is not needed. If you are in the market for Grimm, then just by the greatest hits or something. This was long, repetitive, and mostly bad.
A good collection to have on any literary fanatic's bookshelf...very fun to have these classics ready to be picked up at anytime. However, found myself quickly skimming through the majority of the less famous stories due to their repetition-not so much a "sit down and read the whole thing" type of book.
