The Bible Books of 1st, 2nd And 3rd John

Rate this book
The Bible book of 1st, 2nd and 3rd John is written to finish commentary on the books of John. 1st, 2nd and 3rd John describes Gods tremendous love given to mankind by our Lord and savior. John states in verse one he had seen, touched, ate and fellowshipped with 'the Word of life.' Jesus is the one who gave all life to our universe and world. Life is not explainable! Life only comes from God. Life is a fleeting action which unites body and soul, but only for the duration of mortal life or until mortal death. The soul lives for eternity without a body, in a spiritual form. However, one may choose whether he lives with God or is separated from Him. You too may have eternal life with God. Find out how by reading the Bible and commentaries.

Tried to split this in 3 different entries, but no such luck. So, this will be some random observations for all three letters. 1st John will be at the bottom, as I already did that one.

2nd John
This is a quick little letter to a lady and her children. John is super happy that they are walking in the truth. And remember, the truth is Jesus! John states that the truth DWELLs in us.

John gives this positive feedback, followed by a commandment. This sounds like the improvement sandwich. When you have some difficult news, you start off positive, give the bad news, and end positive.

So, John reminds her - love one another. This is basic and form the beginning and the foundation of truth. John lets her know not to be persuaded by anyone who is NOT following this. They are not from God. And do not be hospitable.

“We have more to chat about, but we will talk about it face to face.”

3rd John

This letter is addressed to Gaius.
Who is Gaius?

What do I know about Gaius withhout knowing anything about him:
He is helping fellow believers who are strangers to him. This is praiseworthy.
These people he helped sounded like missionaries. We are expected to give hospitality.
John knows that Gaius’ soul is prospering, and he wishes him good health
John talks smack about Diotrephes - this dude will not let him/them enter into his church. His personality is that he wants to be high and mighty. He is absolutely militant - throwing people out from the church who don’t follow his directives. John is coming to address this situation.
John follows this description of this horrible “Christian” with an admonishment. He is saying, “Don’t be like this evil dude! Follow the good peeps” Good things are what is from God. And then he insinuates that Diotrephes is evil and not from God. This dude does NOT know God. It’s impossible to know God and be evil like this dude.
“You know who a good dude is? Demetrius. We are reliable and we vouch for him. We will chat more about this when I get there.”

1st John
The purpose of 1st John is to assure believers that they DO have eternal life. I imagine they were a little scared and nervous, and doubtful that they had received the gift of eternal life. How could they be sure? John reiterates the basic message that God is light, and there is no darkness in him. If you do not walk in the light, you are walking in the darkness. And, most importantly, you CANNOT be in God and hate your brother. So, you have to LOVE. And what is love? Just look at Jesus. You also know that you know Him if you keep His commands. John reassures us that this is NOT something we have to worry about. Jesus is in us, and He has overcome the world, so we have overcome as well.

Chapter 1 begins by saying that you have fellowship with us, and we have fellowship with God and Jesus Christ. If we walk in darkness, we are just lying to ourselves and truth (Jesus) is not in us.

If we walk in the light, we have that communion with God. And Christ’s blood is what cleanses us from sin. His blood gets in our blood! But that is only if we walk in the light.

Don’t act like you are perfect. That is a big, fat lie and it means God is not in us. So confess, and God will remit the payment for our sins.

Don’t sin. But if you do, Jesus is your advocate.

Love your brother. If you don’t, you’re walking in darkness.

Don’t love the world. This is not walking in the light. What is the world?
Lust of the flesh
Lust of the eyes
Pride
Honestly, I’ve been erring on the side of gracious in my doctrine for the past few years, and it was truly necessary to read this to get realigned:
Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.

3.18 let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

I forgot just how much I love chapter 4 of 1st John. It is so clear in having discernment.

4.5-6 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth and the spirit of falsehood.
