With powerful forces working behind the scenes, Daisy seemed to be on the path to what may very well be a rousing victory. Or a glorious death, should she fail. For obvious reasons, she hoped for the former rather than the latter.
She and her friends had persevered and come out on the other side time and again. Now they just had to pull together one last time to stand against their greatest foe. Success would mean victory. Failure would mean the loss of all they held dear.
Alliances had been forged, and forces mustered, and her enemies were square in her sights. It was time to act, and Daisy knew she was in for the fight of her life, and on multiple fronts at that. The struggle would be fierce, and blood would certainly be shed, but at the end of the day, she just hoped the majority of it would not be her own.
Scott Baron is an American author with a penchant for oddball stories with O. Henry-esque twists.
Born in Hollywood, Baron credits growing up in Los Angeles with skewing his humor towards the offbeat and absurd. He studied abroad in Italy during his college years, returning to Los Angeles to work in the film industry as an on-set medic. In addition to writing shorts and novels, Baron is also a screenwriter of both feature and television scripts.
Daisy's War (The Clockwork Chimera #5) by Scott Baron These books just get better and better! This has the ultimate battle with lots of twists, great friends, new allies, surprises, and a great ending! I loved this as much as Firefly, which is saying a lot! It has great companionship, exciting challenges, excellent adventures, humor, and deep emotions.
Throughout the last 50 or so pages I squealed. Quite a lot. And I cried. Quite a lot. And now it's over and I'm not entirely sure how I feel.
I. Loved. This. Series. I can't express just how invested I was in the plot, and the characters. I can't believe it's over, and there's nothing else in this world...
Though it ended beautifully. Happily ever after, if you don't think of the massive casualties. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
The time travel aspect of this book was really brilliantly executed, in a way that makes sense and fits. People actually change stuff by going to the past, and it has huge meaning behind each and every change. And it's things that have always been there, in the present life, that wouldn't have happened if they didn't change it in the past.
Learning about Marty and Arlos heritage was amazing, and made me love them even more. The reveal at the end was absolutely spectacular, honestly I was elated to see how it all worked out.
And.... well yeah. I'm really really sad to see this series go. I just might have to reread it sometime soon, because I'm already missing it.
Well developed characters in a story that will surprise you, in the best way on a regular basis. For fans of space opera and science fiction in general.
I still can’t believe that this series is over. I’ve loved every moment of it and I’m so glad that Vivienne Leheny was able to bring Daisy and her crew to life. Scott Baron wrote a great story from beginning to end and I’m really glad I got to listen to each story as they were released on audio. The other thing I did was stay away from reviews so that I didn’t accidentally spoil it for myself. But Baron threw in enough “what!?” moments that I don’t think I could have read enough spoilers to actually genuinely spoil all five books.
From the first book in the series to the last – each character has grown so much. We’ve been introduced to so many new people along the way – and each one adds to the story. Those who were lost in other books might come back at some point, so you never know who is going to show up in a Clockwork Chimera book.
The last two to three hours of this book were a sprint. I couldn’t wait to finish it, but I took my time and savored it. Knowing that once I finished it, I was done with it. (I’m not completely done with Daisy, since she makes an appearance in the last few books in Baron’s other series). I’ve come to really like Daisy more and more with every book. You honestly forget some of the bombshell moments from the first two books and each book she’s given more and more reasons to be liked.
There were a few times in Daisy’s War where I was just reading with my mouth agape thinking “nooo” (both good and bad versions of that exclamation). Baron kept me on my toes and kept throwing different curveballs that I didn’t see coming – even 5 books deep. I love when a book that you’re so familiar with can still throw you so far off of its scent. This book and honestly, this series has done that for me in almost every book.
I’m happy that it’s over but sad to see it go. If you wanted to pick this series up, you should. Baron is a master storyteller and the Clockwork Chimera series is proof of that.
An absolutely fantastic end to such a wonderful series! I enjoyed meeting Arlo and Marty. I knew there was something off about them the whole time and I really was not expecting what it was. Without giving away everything, I will just say, I am happy for all of the surprises and was thrilled when my own hopes came true. Some of those surprises brought tears to my eyes, especially when it came to remembering Craaxit. Yep, I admit it, I cried. But that is what a good book/series should do; make you feel for the characters. Well done!
I've just discovered Scott Baron and am looking for more by him! I am now looking for more by him. Very well written with characters that will stay with.
“I can imagine. But what I was wondering––man, this is so weird––what I was wondering is when you guys have flesh bodies, are you, uh, anatomically correct?” George burst out laughing. “Oh, man. You mean am I packing more weapons than meet the eye?”
This was a fantastic end to a brilliant series filled to the brim with action, twists and hilarious moments. The personalities of Humans, Cyborgs and AI's were very cleverly done, in such a way that made this a very unputdownable series.
I like how the book ties some things together and continues the story with Murphy popping up all over the place. There are a couple of closed loops that pop up that bother me but Bill and Teds might just have to be used as explanation.
I like finishing a good story. This is one of those stories where you see the connections before the author reveals them. He did drop a few bread crumbs after all. The contortions made to have the hero's win just as it looked like curtains for them are a bit fantastic. Of course, if you can wave a magic wand and ignore the probability of a time paradox and destroying the space/time matrix that binds the universe together then why not?
Overall, the book stuck its landing. Though there are a few things I didn't like, they are small. The first book for me was the worst. It felt all over the place, and nothing was clear about what the book was trying to be. Once the series started to answer some questions, it improved. However, there are some dull areas within this and the previous books. There are also some Deus ex machina, though it is somewhat explained. Sometimes it feels a bit contrived for the story to have something suitable. Also, Arlo felt unnecessary to the plot. And I knew he was a time traveler related to Daisy, and again it felt contrived for him to be there even though he was a fun character. I thought the war part of this book would feel rushed since they were taking over two planets. However, it felt well-paced, and I enjoyed the actions within. Though this series may not be breaking new ground, I can see someone finding it they're favorite. For me, I like the series, and I hope the best endeavors for the author.

The end of this epic 5 part series. I feel sad it's over but the time feels right. Daisy works towards accomplishing her goals and making the universe a safer place to live. Some old characters are reintroduced, and we find out if humans can really win the war. A fun easy read of a series, would try more by this author.
This is the last book of the series and I am disappointed that it has come to an end all five of the books have been excellent a five star on all 5 books !
“Daisy’s War” is the fifth and last book in the “Clockwork Chimera” series and what a ride it has been. I will miss Daisy and her combined crew of humans and AIs. If you want more of her, make sure you listen to the author’s Dragon Mage series as many of them are in this audiobook series as well. The entire series has been a pleasure to listen to in audio format and I feel that the conclusion to the series did not disappoint. The author (Scott Baron) did a wonderful job of telling an engrossing story with plenty of action, fighting and science fiction fun. The audiobook narration was skillfully performed by Vivienne Leheny who has nearly ninety titles under her belt on Audible at the time of this review. Both the story and the narration just seemed to fit well together like a hand in a glove. If you are seeking a new series to start, I would highly-recommend this audiobook; along with the entire series as well.
What I enjoy most about the author’s stories is that they all flow well, each have a purpose, and the characters are rather well defined and dimensional. Things are no different with this finale. There are struggles, friendships and even some emotional parts that make the story feel alive and more like watching a movie or television episode. Here in this final chapter of the series, we continue to see that war is difficult, and it can take time to plan and prepare for it. We also see that with war, there are high risks and even greater consequences in losing. We continue to appreciate Daisy growing in her skills, but this audiobook additionally focuses quite a bit on Freya’s learning and maturing as an AI. Along with that, we are given a deeper view into Sarah’s development and expansion within the story. In this book, we have a few surprises of returning characters while some are lost forever. I would not want to give anything away; sorry no spoilers. For those who enjoyed “stabby”, he is back as well; and just as powerful.
The author’s ability to develop the various character’s relationships is something I often do not find in this genre. We see that Daisy and Sarah’s relationship grows closer along with many of the various AI and loyalists. Bonds that have been created feels like something more than just co-workers. Instead, you get a sense of what those in battle face and that only they understand what one another is going through. There is also a dependency upon the many others to ensure a positive outcome. You have humans, AIs and rebel aliens willing to stand together against their common foe. If anyone aspect in their great plan fails, the entire plan fails; and all will be lost. You can really feel the tension even without it being directly called out by the author. Add to this the issue of each side having spies, and the amount of deception and intrigue grows deeper. Misdirection and misinformation are the keys to winning any war, and this is leveraged quite a bit to both sides advantage.
Here in this audiobook, the author blends in aspects of humor or lighter materials to break up the continued focus upon war. We have even some classic saying such as not wanting to be a bee filled pinata; ouch. We also have the same teasing between characters found in previous books. Like many of the previous audiobooks in the series, this one also contains pop culture references to a few movies and witty portions that make you smile while listening. There are times when the listener rides an emotional rollercoaster as cohorts fall in battle. Yet, we still have elements of romance, AI improvements, and many other tasks that keep us engaged as the battle rages on. I can say that this book contained more action and plotting then the previous books, but again, this is war and what most of the previous books were leading up to this point.
The audiobook’s narration is what I have come to expect from Vivienne Leheny after listening to a number of books in the series. She is a professional in her ability to voice the many characters along with some added audio effects when a few of the characters are conversing. The reading pace was decent and the volume consistent. Apart from a few audio patches/plugs, the rest of the narration was professionally performed. I have enjoyed her voicing the characters throughout the series as that provides some consistency across the series.
Parents and younger listeners, as with the previous books in the series, the author does include a fair amount of vulgar language. There is also a fair amount of mature/adult banter and innuendos used in a few places that I would not recommend the series for younger listeners.
In summary, nearly half of this book focuses on the very large battle the group faces. There is still a good amount of jesting and humor along with the aspect of some additional time travel. The characters are well defined, the story is well rounded, and the flow feels more like a TV series or movie as the author does a good job of painting the environment using descriptive words. The narration is solid, and the character felt they had their own voice and personalities. The audio had a few slight plugs, but nothing that would keep me from listening. If you are seeking a shorter space opera series and you desire good story telling, I would recommend you pick up this series.
In this final volume of Scott Baron's Clockwork Chimera series, the complicated plot threads that Baron has spun all over, across, and throughout space-time get woven into an extremely satisfying finale. These wonderful characters that we have followed so attentively were created by a master craftsman. I, for one, will remember them fondly!
TRIVIA ALERT: Now, I have one bone to pick: Murphy's Law. Poor Captain Edward Murphy has been unfairly reviled for that law by almost everyone for too many years. There is a long history about Murphy's Law, including at least one full book about its origin. To boil it down, Ed Murphy, an engineer, did not actually voice the law as we usually see it today, not even close. He did not even name it himself. It was named after him, mostly in jest. Be that as it may, like any other natural law, it operated long before it was discovered and named. Ed was not, and is not, guilty for any of the unfortunate events that illustrate the operation of Murphy's Law, neither in reality, nor in fiction. Give Captain Murphy a break!
This ended really well and would have been my only 5 of the series except the battles dragged and everything that could go wrong did and dragged the battle out over and over and over to the point that I sped up the narration to 2x through the battles. If I were reading, I would have skimmed much faster and not missed much.
This one dealt with liberating the Chithid home world and attacking the alien Roz at their home world, which first they need to find it. They have a mysterious alliance with Arlo (from book 4) and his ship Marty and Freya is always up to something . Then there are all the characters, human, AI, and Chithid or alien, who all are really great and create a fun read.
How to purchase March 20, 2023 This is KU with a $7.50 add on but I suggest doing the omnibus of all 5, and buying either the add on whisper sync to the KU or buy the Kindle and add on for $7.50 (all 5 books for $7.99 plus $7.50) yes all 5 books cost pretty much the same as each one separately. I wouldn't but the Audible straight as for .50 you get the ebook too.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Or how to win friends and influence people in spite if Murphy's law
I volunteered to read advanced copies of this series, but I chose to look at them as birthday and Christmas presents instead!
The whole series start to finish has been a fun read and great escape. Each new character had a familiarity like greeting an old friend. It invoked I'm me the same love and feelings when I read pulp syfy ( John Carter of Mars).
Admittedly, I put off starting this one until Christmas. I wasn't ready for it to be over and I wanted to see how it ends. Perfect. It end perfectly.
My favorite part was the battle for taangaar. Not only the battle itself but the rebuilding and revolution in the planet itself. I cried when Daisy finds craxit family. I loved the women being a strong part of the resistance already in place. And I especially loved Finn's knife work.
These are the things I still wished for: I wanted Tamara and Johnathan to be a thing. I wanted more Kip ( because I love him and need more talking toasters). I wanted the big gun too have a name ( like Vera or something). I also wanted someone to get the Arlo/ Marty connection way sooner.
Overall though- I loved the series. It will go into rotation of those books I reread when I need an escape
Summary: This book was fun, good space opera, but lots of aspects that were a bit flimsy and if over thought would make it unreadable, as it was Daisy is super intelligent, super dexterous, super strong, but has the wisdom of a 2 year old - it makes for a fun story. Book 2 similar theme summed up as fun but stupid, easy to read so I'll keep going with the series. Book 3 - more of the same, getting really annoyed and put off by Daisy perfection. Book 4 - time travel, hmmm. It does tie up some loose ends ... very convenient. Book 5, Daisy somehow has gone from extreme stupidity to great strategist in charge of the entire plan. Hmmm. Oh and more very convenient time travel.
Plotline: Contrived in places but yes moves nicely with an overall purpose
Premise: the overall aim of the premise works but some of the details are off. Book 2 we learn more and not all good
Writing: simple quick the user is right in the action with Daisy. No great depth to the characters though
Ending: Nice completion all set up for book 2 ... book 3 ... book 4 ... its finished (I see there is a related series - I won't be picking that up)
I really don't want to tell you anything as this will spoil your own enjoyment of the story. You need to read it for yourself, but only if you have read the rest of the series first. You cannot read these books as standalone, as each one builds on the one before it.
The ending to this series was fantastic, and I didn't see any of it coming. The characters were excellent. Even the AIs, who sometimes can be afterthoughts or second class citizens in a story, were fully formed with their own unique and quirky personalities. Like a fellow reviewer, there were many times when I had tears in my eyes - for good and bad reasons. This book surpassed any expectations that I had regarding how the story would play out.
Well written, action packed, exciting, with twists and turns that'll make you feel like you're on a rollercoaster. Alternating between heartbreaking and joyous, you won't be able to put this book down. Excellent.
It's Splendid , With Ongoing Ahhh, and Adventures of Science Fiction or Fact.
"Another splendid adventure, with intriguing puzzles, first-rate problem-solving, and an impressive array of alien characters, motives, and methods."An absolutely terrific book. The aliens are every bit as fascinating. With outcomes are unpredictable, but here's one that's a sure thing: , you won't be able to put it down until the very last page.. you must read the complete 5 book series. Crazy world we live in this could be our future together during these pandemic times. Murphy's Law always happen.
Daisy and crew continue their fight against the Raz. After eliminating them from Earth they have to take the fight to them.
While the story has the same dynamic I have come to enjoy from this series, Scott Baron has started to fall into the time travel cure all trap that haunts a lot of authors. Overall the story was well written and pushed the plot further and without giving any spoilers away I did not mind the time travel aspect that had been building up during the past book.
Long of the short if you enjoyed the series up until this point you will like this book as well.
The series was good and the conclusion was good outside of the egregious use of time travel shenanigans to fix all the problems.
The series also had a lot of examples of great ideas being abandoned very quickly - for example Daisy's extraordinary engineering feats disappeared by book 3, the sword and power whip we're both abandoned in book 4.
This book is fun, and enjoyable but needed a lot of refining
The last book in the series and it does not disappoint! More space war with Earth's biggest, in size and meanest, enemy. There are numerous surprises and story lines that converge for the final. Do the humans prevail? Which characters are no longer alive? Does someone make the ultimate sacrifice and who does it? Read and you will find the answers!
These books were wonderful and had so much personality in them. The AI's were so amazing and had such wonderful personalities. The characters in the books were so well written. I really had a great time reading them. I'm sorry to come to the end. You really do not want to miss them if you haven't read them yet. Amazing job writing them.
The story is as good as the rest of the books, it is rousing and fast paced. The only sad part is the series is now over. All good things must come to an end but it is sad. Read the whole series you won't be disappointed.
