Two men, one driven to the edge of sanity by heart-breaking losses, the other craving revenge, conspire to reshape America and bring her population to their knees.
When young men on the Warm Springs Reservation in Central Oregon are stricken with an unidentified disease that leaves them sterile, Peter Savage is called to aid in the investigation.
With the inquiry gaining momentum, Peter is kidnapped by hardened mercenaries. In the remote high desert of Oregon, Peter finds himself face to face with a demon from his past-an adversary who has seemingly risen from the grave.
As the minutes count down to a biological holocaust, Peter presents the only chance to save an unwitting civilian population. With his trusted canine companion Diesel by his side, along with a former-assassin-turned-ally, Peter must gamble far more than his own life… and the odds have never been so long.

"Lethal Savage is a wondrously effective, ticking clock bio-thriller in the best tradition of Doug Preston and James Rollins. Dave Edlund's latest tale to feature his stalwart Peter Savage features the ultimate high-stakes plot to either destroy America or change it forever. A tour de force in all respects!" ─ Jon Land, USA TODAY bestselling author of the Murder, She Wrote series and Caitlin Strong series

"I would follow Peter Savage into any firefight," says James Rollins, New York Times bestseller of The Demon Crown.
A member of the International Thriller Writers, Dave’s action-political thrillers are often compared to the Dirk Pitt novels by Clive Cussler, the Sigma Series novels by James Rollins, the Jack Ryan novels by Tom Clancy, and the international thrillers of Steve Berry.
When Dave isn’t cooking up the latest adventure for Peter Savage, readers can find him working as a leading expert in hydrogen energy. He is an inventor on 90 US Patents and more than 120 foreign patents. He has published in excess of 100 technical articles and presentations and has been an invited author of several technical books on alternative energy. Dave is a graduate of the University of Oregon with a doctoral degree in chemistry.
An avid outdoorsman and shooter, he’s hunted throughout North America for big game ranging from wild boar to moose to bear. Edlund is a long-time resident of Bend, Oregon, where he lives with his wife, son, and four dogs.
LETHAL SAVAGE by Dave Edlund is a well-written and fast-paced thriller. This is the sixth book in the Peter Savage series, but it works well as a standalone novel. However, I would like to read the first five in order as soon as I can.
The story takes place in Oregon mainly in or near the cities of Bend and Eugene. Two men conspire to address the population explosion. When men on the Warn Springs Reservation in Oregon start showing up at the medical clinic with similar problems and no one seems to be willing to help, Peter Savage is called to investigate. I won’t say anything else about the plot in order to avoid spoilers.
The plot was suspenseful and paced well. The story line was thought-provoking and action packed. Peter’s character is well-developed. The prose is expressive and proficient. Additionally, a large part of the story line is very plausible in the 21st century. Trigger warnings include animal cruelty, kidnapping, bioterrorism, murder and lots of shoot outs.
The author also has notes at the beginning of the book that talks about global climate change and global population. While this was good information, I felt it should have been placed at the end of the book and possibly combined with the Author’s postscript.
While this is the first book that I have read by Dave Edlund, I look forward to reading more of his novels. If readers enjoy thrillers with a lot of action, then they may enjoy this novel as much as I did.
Many thanks to Inscribe Digital/Light Messages Publishing, Dave Edlund and Net Galley for a digital ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way.
Peter Savage is minding his own business, when some Native American friends come in with a request for help. It seems that a number of young men are coming down with an illness that left them sterile. Savage has some connections, and calls in the CDC, but investigates on his own, when it seems their hands are tied.
Pretty good. Not as much shooting as in some of the books, but maybe more realistic because of that.
Lethal Savage is the continuing story of an ordinary man (sort of) cast into extraordinary circumstances who ultimately prevails despite overwhelming odds. I come from a life of action and derring-do and found myself completely wrapped up in this amazing character. As Peter Savage moves through the morass life has thrown at him in this novel, my immediate reaction was to congratulate myself on believing I could and would do the same under the same circumstances, but then Edlund cranks it up a bit, then a bit more, so that eventually, I came to realize that whatever my personal capabilities are, Savage is the better man.
Lethal Savage is not for the squeamish. Edlund pulls no punches when it comes to close-in gunfights and hand-to-hand combat. What Edlund does is give the reader a taste of reality in the venue he creates. Savage is human and makes mistakes that cost him dearly, but he preservers in a manner that will hold you through the final page.
Lethal Savage is not just about one man’s struggle, however. The story canvas is a local Oregon community involving U.S. bioterrorists as a precursor to the world-stage in a sweeping play that will have you checking headlines. Edlund has seamlessly blended current biological/virus research with his personal take on the why for the characters’ how. Be sure to read the Author’s Note at the beginning and the Author’s Post Script at the end. The first creates an accurate and thoughtful canvas against which the author paints his thriller. The second wraps it up with food for thought that you will not soon forget.
I just finished this book and had a hard time putting it down. The story grabs you right from the beginning with the interaction between Darnell Price and Ming's plan to add a virus to the water. They have added the virus to bottled water that they have donated to the Native Indian Reservation.
Meanwhile, a face from Peter's past, is involved with stealing money from a dog fighting outfit. She later finds out that someone has put a contract out for Peter's murder in the amount of $5M. Since she was an assassin in a prior portion of her life, she had thoughts about it.
Peter had two attempts on his life while he was attempting to help the Indians on the reservation. The males were coming down with an infection in their lower body. Following leads, he was able to get the CDC involved. It also resulted in his capture by Ming's associates.
The ending where good overtakes evil will keep your interest right to the end.
Overall a well executed story. Glad we got to go along with Peter on his adventure. The main plot was very interesting to think about. That is one thing I really enjoy about these books. Can't wait to see what happens in the next story.
