1815 ereignete sich einer der stärksten Vulkanausbrüche der Geschichte. Der Tambora (Indonesien) explodierte mehrere Tage und die Erde verdunkelte sich. Diese Buch erzählt kurz die Ereignisse des Ausbruchs (ca. 10% des Buches) und beschäftigt sich dann mit deren Nachwirkungen. Weltweit fielen zwei Sommer aus und eine grosse Hungersnot entstand. Auswanderungen von Europa nach Amerika waren die Folge davon.
Viele Themen werden besprochen und Statistiken und Tabellen zur Bestätigung hinzugefügt. Ich selbst hätte mir mehr Beschreibungen zum Ausbruch gewünscht und weniger 'nachher'.

Sehr spannendes, weil kaum bekanntes Thema. Manchmal sind mir die Beschreibungen der direkten und indirekten Folgen des Ausbruchs aber zu annekdotisch; man hat manchmal das Gefühl, der Autor würde sich etwas verzetteln.

Het eerste boek waarin de Tamboracrisis , de uitbarsting van de vulkaan Tambora in Sumbawa in 1815 beschreven wordt. De gevolgen van deze uitbarsting die een grote invloed heeft gehad in alle werelddelen en in de politieke en industriele omwentelingen gedurende de periode 1815 tot 1820. De basis van de grote hongersnood en volksverhuizingen was uiteindelijk het gevolg van een klimatologisch gebeuren op het eiland Sumbawa.

Ein tolles Portrait der Weltgesellschaft zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts, man kann die vielen Stunden Literaturrecherche, die dem Schreiben vorausgegangen sind, spüren. Sicher kann man an einigen Stellen die Frage stellen, inwiefern hier wirklich Tambora das politische Geschehen geprägt hat, aber auch damit setzt sich der Autor an verschiedenen Stellen auseinander. Veränderungen haben immer mehrere Ursachen und hier wird zum ersten Mal auch das ungewöhnliche Klima der Zeit als Erklärungsansatz mit einbezogen.

Trotz des reißerischen Titels (“Europa” statt “Welt” war dem Verlag wohl zu wenig spektakulär) eine große Freude! Gewagte historische Thesen, fast alle überzeugend argumentiert, die eine ganz frische und andere Sicht auf vermeintlich Gewusstes eröffnen und herausfordern. Und so reflektiert & unterhaltsam geschrieben, wie ich es sonst nur von englischsprachigen Historikern kenne.

Great look at how one environmental crisis (the volcanic eruption of Mount Tambora shooting ash into the stratosphere that affects sunlight & weather patterns around the world for several years) affects the course of history for years after. I've read 3 books about this event and this was the most thorough in terms of outcomes good and bad.
