edited after my first re-read
I liked the audiobook version, although I think I prefer the story itself a bit more... nonetheless, it was as amazing as the first time I read it :) after all, this was my favourite book of last year :) I highly recommend you all to check out this wonderful, diverse and phenomenally written contemporary romance :) my full review to check out below :)
original review :)
I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) this is the first book in a new series by the lovely Heather Novak, but worry not, the sequel will be about a different couple, so no cliffhangers or anything here ;) just an awesome story :) I really liked Heather's previous books, but this one? *sighs happily* this one absolutely blew my mind :) I have so many good things to say about it, that I actually have problems putting all of that into like proper and full words and sentences... I tried sleeping on all of that, so maybe my enthusiasm would settle down a bit, but nothing like that happened ;) so instead we will embrace the chaos and just dive right into first, me telling you a bit more what this whole book is all about, and then I will tell you about the awesomeness that is this story, while sharing my thoughs and feelings about it :)
So first and foremost, we have Edie... *sighs happily* I have such a woman crush on her :) she's one of my favourite characters I read about in a very long time :) she is a part owner of an auto shop but basically runs everything... especially since the other part owners are: Will, her ex-fiance and Luke, Will's older brother :) talk about a complicated situation... and that's only the beginning... because now Luke is back in town and he needs to sell his part in the auto shop as soon as possible... but wait, that's not all... Will is engaged... to Edie's mom... yeah... it's a lot to take for just one person... the whole book takes place over a span of a few weeks, where we can see how Edie handles everything and tries to do everything she can to save the auto shop and just... survive all that... because Luke being back in town makes her realize that there might be something more between them... ok, I feel like these are all the details I can possibly give you right now, because anything else would spoil you certain things that I think are gonna be much better as a surprise :) so instead let me jump into all the praises I have about this gem... :)
I honestly have so many great things to say about this book that I have no idea where to start... :) so in no order whatsoever, let's begin with Edie :) when I say that I loved her, I mean that I absolutely adored her... she's my favourite kind of heroine to read about: smart and brave and just someone I would love to be friends with... yes, she makes mistakes, but we are all flawed... she works hard to be better and to do better, at the same time being true to herself... I appreciate and respect that about her... Heather wrote her so honestly and realistically that I kept forgetting she's a fictional character... but the same can be said about the whole cast of characters... they were all so beautifully diverse and complex... when it comes not only to their sexuality, colour of their skin, but just a lot of other qualities... even the fact that Edie has some serious food allergies that affect her life in many ways... Heather created all those people in such an amazing way that all those qualities were just a part of each individual, and added to a much bigger and complex picture... not just one defining thing about them... and I loved it :) we do live in a very complex and diverse world and I feel like Heather really grasped it with her cast... :) if we're being totally honest I wanted to crawl between the pages of this novel more than once, cause I wanted to be a part of that group of friends... :) yes, they are that awesome :) if that's not convincing enough, let's talk for a moment about Heather's writing style in general :) because it's absolute perfection :) like I mentioned already, her characters are complex and diverse... the main couple is totally swoonworthy and the way they handle this tough and complicated situation they are in is amazing :) the whole story is a perfect mix of lighter and more serious topics and vibes... on the one hand, we have the absolutely hilarious Edie's tips at the beginning of each chapter and the amazing banter between Edie and all sorts of characters... and let's not forget about Sergeant Cornflakes ;) I will let you discover him for yourselves ;) on the other hand we have all those more serious moments... when Luke shares some memories, scenes between Edie and her toxic mother... it's all woven together in a very real way... let's just say that this book made me tear up, laugh out loud and make all sorts of aaaawwww noises :) the story unfolds amazingly and I just couldn't get enough of it... I wanted there to be more chapters, cause I needed to read more about these people :) fortunately there is a nice little teaser about the next book in a series, and I am already excited to get my hands on it... :) I read many books this year... like 150+ so far, and this was definitely one of my faves :) and I'm not saying it was my favourite only because there is more than one month left in 2018 so I need to be fair ;) but it's definitely a very strong contender for the top spot, that's for sure :) if you have yet to read this absolutely beautiful book, definitely go do it right now... yes, it's one of those drop-everything-else-you're-doing-and-go-read-it books :) you can thank me later for pointing you in the direction of this gem :)
XOXO
