In this standalone MINI MYSTERY, all snarky food critic and amateur detective Josie Tucker wants is to grab a quick sandwich from the deli downstairs on this dark and gloomy Boston afternoon. But instead of a delectable Double Decker Deluxe, the only thing on today's menu is a dead body.
Award-winning mystery and fantasy author, EM Kaplan, was an 80s kid, spoonfed on six channels of a VHF dial TV. She grew up reading Agatha Christie and Edgar Rice Burroughs in rural Arizona where there were no sidewalks but plenty of tumbleweeds. A former wannabe spy, trombonist, toilet-cleaner, beginner ninja, and subversive marketeer, she currently lives in the frozen north with her husband, author JD Kaplan, kids, and dog.
Josie is visiting her friend, Susan, who lives in an apartment over the deli owned by two brothers, Dante and Sal. Dante and Sal are known to have differences that can get quite noisy. When Susan heads downstairs to get their sandwiches, she finds a body at the base of the steps, just inside the service entrance. The man's shirt and the ring on his left hand made Susan think the body was that of Sal. When Sal and his wife, Bonnie, arrive a short time later, she learns that the deceased is Dante, who had recently married a former waitress, Lisa Genovese. It is clear right from the start that Bonnie dislikes Lisa and thinks she lied to get Dante to marry her.
Who killed Dante? Why was he killed? Was it an accident or murder? Can Josie figure out what happened?
This is a short mini-mystery but still has all the elements of the longer books with plenty of red herrings mixed in with the clues.
This Josie Tucker Mini Mystery was a great short read, full of interesting characters and a good cozy mystery to solve. While it was good to have read previous Josie books, it doesn't matter if you haven't, as it also serves as a standalone mystery. Very enjoyable and highly recommended for all lovers of quick mysteries, as well as Josie fans. NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions
This was a little outside my preferred genre, but I enjoyed it. I became aware of the series via Facebook posts and became curious. This was my introduction to the author's work, and I really enjoyed it. If you haven't tried her books, I would recommend this as a good one to "test the waters", so to speak. Even though mysteries aren't my normal forte, I'll likely revisit this series for a change of pace!
I was stuck at the emergency vet last night without the book I had been reading. I was bored and didn't want to read a super long book, so I downloaded this little gem.
I have been a fan of the Josie Tucker series for some years now. This was a great trip back into Josie's world. It was a quick easy read. It helped pass one of the long hours I was waiting.
Josie is quite funny, I loved that she is a food critic and yet always hungry. The clues were great but yet I missed something cause I got the curve ball and missed it. Wow what an ending. A MUST read.
