Following Volume 2, the beginning issue in this volume was a little hard to focus on, as you were trying to remember the events of Volume 1! But soon, the story flows and it becomes exciting as things are slowly revealed! I enjoyed how we got a reunion, not only between Angel and Gunn but with all the Angel & co. people!! I also really enjoyed seeing events from the show transition well to the comics and how those certain events impact many of the characters lives! Overall, really enjoying this story line and can't wait to read more!!
The best volume so far. It helps that the art's improved, but I think the big thing is that the trajectory of the story has finally settled. Narratively, it might have been a mistake to plop a huge flashback in the middle of the series, instead of just starting there and working our way forward. Nice cliffhanger at the end.
I have to say this, though: I am so glad that I am getting these through the library. If I had paid $25 for a trade that collects just four issues, I would have been less than pleased. Sure, there's a lot of extras, but those extras could have just as easily been packaged with slightly larger trades.
I have always thought you were an intriguing character. You added mystery and romance to the first season of Buffy, and we both know I cry my eyes out every time I watch Becoming Part 2 and you are shoved into the vortex of Acathla. Years after I finished watching Buffy from start to finish for a second or third time, I even dutifully marched my way through all 5 seasons of your show, despite the rocky cop-drama feel of the first season. I thank you for the addition of some more great characters to the Buffyverse (Fred, Gunn, Lorne, and the return of a more rugged Wesley and more motherly Cordelia, and of course your son Connor though I never really warmed up to him), and more than once I thought I might even be trading in my Team Spike membership card and switching over to the broody side. It's been a wild ride. You were with soul, without soul. Vampire. Human. You even spent some time as a puppet. I was with you through it all... but After the Fall you have lost me. I find myself struggling to figure out what is going on with you since W&H sent you to hell. You just don't talk anymore! I held such high hopes after the final alley scene at the end of the series... but sadly, you have let me down. And frankly, you just aren't looking as good as you once were (should I blame the comic artists?)
I think it's time we bring our relationship to a close. I will continue to follow your adventures with Faith because they are currently very Giles-centric (and Giles is one of the most underrated characters from the show, let's face it), and I'm eager to see if you can indeed redeem yourself after your bizarre Twilight excursion from Buffy Season 8 (comic continuation). But we will be on a strictly professional basis from now on. I know it may be hard, but please stay out of my dreams.
I honestly have no idea of what is going on. Telepathic fishes, Mass Effect-like leviathans, psychotic vampries and now Cordelia? The art does not help either. I'm just like "oh, there's Wesley. You, I like".
Angel continues to fight the forces of evil in Angel: After the Fall – Volume 3. After surviving a battle against the demon lords of Los Angeles Angel’s team retreats to the Hyperion Hotel and sets up a safe haven; Angel then tracks a vampire gang and is shocked to discover that it’s being led by Gunn, who then tries to persuade Angel to join his cause. Especially well-written, Brian Lynch does a great job at staging the reveals and confrontations that have been building over the last several issues/chapters. And, the artwork has been greatly improved; having a lot more texture and a better use of color than in previous volumes. Additionally, an art gallery and a Q&A with Brian Lynch from the IDW forums are included. The penultimate entry of the series, Angel: After the Fall – Volume 3 is incredibly exciting and full of thrills.
Not as good as the first 2, but enjoyable. It's amazing how some of the frames capture the actors. There are a few scenes of Gun that just leap out. I didn't feel like it was enough story though, didn't move forward enough.
With the show, I watched maybe a little bit. But not as much as Buffy which I watched more. Its nice that their stories are continued in comic form. This volume was good. Liking this so far.
First reread of After the Fall since the initial read - which was possibly 2009-2010 not long after the first graphic novel collection was released.
The art in this one starts out okay - no -- bad -- and then goes bad, bad, bad. I hated the ending art. Maybe it was the inker or the publishing, but yuck. Throws off the whole thing for me. I have a hard time enjoying the plotting and the story when I hate the art.
There is some cutesy comic book parody and some other snarky bits that make the book sort of fun and for the most part the story is good so as I read it, I was wading my best through the bad bad bad art. I was still dedicated. I didn't remember a lot of this story even though I reputedly had read it when I first came out, so perhaps the art did a number on me the first time too.
Although overall the plot advances, there are places where there is an unusual amount of exposition for a comic book format.
Ugh, I don't have it in me to re-read this the third time through so this is my promise to myself, if i do another GN read through of After the Fall, I can skim Vol 3.
Let's do the best part of this first, the art galley. There is some outstanding pictures here like Nick Runge's Wesley or John Romita's Angel/Angelus pencil sketch. Alex Garner's illustration of Connor, Fred and Spike over an open grave is amazing.
And then we have the muddy, uninspired art that makes up most of the bound volume. Sigh. I hate to say it but there are reasons I stopped collecting American comics and moved to exclusively Japanese manga. Art this sloppy just does nothing for me. Half the time I'm not even sure who is who except Gunn (for the obvious reasons).
The storyline has interesting ideas, the Illyria/Fred dichotomy, Gwen and Connor and what Gwen does. The sad interactions of Wes and Illyria. Angel and Gunn's confrontation and .
But it doesn't seem to have 'enough' storyline. It's just stretched out to make it longer so it began to feel slow and repetitive. So the story arc is good but it really needed punched up some.
The return to the main narrative after the complete slop of volume two was nice. I also enjoyed Nick Runge's art a bit more, even if the coloring still makes it a bit glossy.
Unfortunately, the overall story was messy and confusing. I'll chalk it up to how bad Whedon has been at plotting the comics section of the Buffyverse rather than blaming Lynch's writing but, either way, this was difficult to follow.
Also, I praised them in the first volume for using familiar characters without leaning too hard on the Nostalgia Button. But they go in hard with that nostalgia here, bringing back plot points and characters that were already resolved, and didn't need rehashing.
This series has been the inverse of Buffy Season 8, in that this started really well and then quickly went to shit. Hopefully, it will improve in the last few volumes.
If you loved the story in the first volume of Angel After The Fall, you might enjoy continuing that story here. Personally, it didn't hold my interest.
The art is still all over the place but I'm getting used to it.
Angel and the gang has won and the majority of the of California is getting some what back to normal; at least not humans being killed by demons by the truck load. That's a plus.
Weasly and Fred/illyria got reacquainted and illyria got pushed out by Fred so that's interesting.
Angel gets outed on not being a vampire anymore and still decides to go find the alpha vampire that killed a demon lord. It was Charles.
We also find out the dragons name and it's cute.
I'll keep the rest of the story mum since it does get interesting.
Onto the next volume.

this was a great continuation of the story, something’s wrapped up too quickly (or maybe it felt that way bc half the battle took place in volume 1) but other things have been a real joy to watch happen. particularly loved the Gunn/angel reunion, and the limbo area with Cordelia because of course, if Angel is dying she would want to be there to make his final moments more peaceful. lynch did a good job of capturing her time and the importance of their relationship I felt. the angel reveal was also pretty good and exactly how I assumed certain characters would find out, but still waiting on Spike to find out… his reaction is gonna be good. great cliffhanger and can’t wait for the rest.

After being somewhat disappointed with Hack/Slash, I thought this to be a good time to return to the Angel/Buffy bundle that I never completed. So volume 3 was a bit confusing. I still wonder whether having volume 2 be the flashback volume was the best idea. And I get that Angel is supposed to be dark, but I'd like for the art to not look too shadowy. But in any case, I enjoyed seeing the story progress, even if this volume is not as good as the first two. The interview at the end is also amusing.
Volume 3 goes back to more 'Season 6' storytelling and we get more of the convoluted plot with Wolfram & Hart...
Angel is human. He's faking his vampire powers with spells and potions left behind at the W&H offices. What could go wrong?
LOTS! - Gunn has been turned and is leading a gang of prophecy following vamps - Illyria shifts back to human Fred form whenever stressed - Wesley is ghostly/intangible/owned by W&H ===== I forget how suicidal Angel was. He rushes headlong into EVERYTHING.
I actually really enjoyed this volume of Angel: After the Fall. Besides bringing Cordelia back (if non corporeal, although she's not my favorite character), it also allowed the truth about Angel's humanity to come out and revealed the possibility of the Shanshu prophecy not being as much as its cracked up to be. Although I wish there was more Spike and Illyria - and less Connor - it was still quite interesting and enjoyable.
Gunn and Angel face off in a battle to see who should be the Chosen One of the Powers That Be as Wesley and Spike must cope with Illyria's reversion to Fred.
At times, this successfully feels like a continuation of the series, but the writers make full use of the unlimited special effects budget to expand the universe and the hell dimension on the page.
Oh wow that was very intense ! I like this hellish LA almost more than I loved LA in the tv show... The story is amazing, eventhough the art is sometimes a little underwhelming (but also sometimes very beautiful...).
So, wow! Really really getting into this story. It’s more engaging, more interesting, more suspenseful! And Lynch is really killing it characterizing the the characters. It’s pretty fantastic!
Before I get into the next volume, I’m going to google Angel/Lynch slash fiction.
3.5. Este volumen es considerablemente mejor que los dos anteriores. Algunos elementos de la historia que fueron presentados al principio de After the Fall empiezan a tener sentido.
Well, that was entertaining. Lots of familiar faces and Angel in quite the predicament. Gunn is in a predicament too. And what the hell is up with Fred / Illyria? Spike is his usual comic relief. It's entertaining. On to volume 4.
The big battle played out in this volume. It is fun seeing Angel and Co back together again. AND seeing old faces. This was a good installment to the story!
