The Working Brain: An Introduction To Neuropsychology

Rate this book
This important book, by the most distinguished Soviet psychologist of our time, is the product of almost forty years of extensive research aimed at understanding the cerebral basis of human psychological activity. The main part of the book describes what we know today about the individual systems that make up the human brain and about the role of the individual zones of the cerebral hemispheres in the task of providing the necessary conditions for higher forms of mental activity to take place. Finally, Luria analyzes the cerebral organization of perception and action, of attention and memory, or speech and intellectual processes, and attempts to fit the facts obtained by neuropsychological studies of individual brain systems into their appropriate place in the grand design of psychological science.

Alexander Romanovich Luria (Russian: Алекса́ндр Рома́нович Лу́рия ) was a famous Soviet neuropsychologist and developmental psychologist. He was one of the founders of cultural-historical psychology and the leaders of the Vygotsky Circle. Apart from his work with Vygotsky, he is widely known for his later work with two extraordinary psychological case studies, his study of a man with a highly advanced memory published as The Mind of a Mnemonist, and the study of a man with traumatic brain injury published in The Man with a Shattered World.

Alexander Luria was a great figure in several areas of intellectual endeavor. For me, his greatest value is in his study of the brain. This is fairly well written, reasonably accessible, and filled with research-based insights.

There is discussion of how different parts of the brain function and what their contributions are to behavior.

For historical purposes alone, this volume is to be recommended.

Interesante.

Interesting, a bit outdated. but worth to read. Special, because it is by Luria.

It's a fantastic book, and well worth reading but the organization seemed a little unwieldy after his brilliant and succinct case studies. It has a bit of a textbook feel and if I am going to plow through a textbook, I would prefer something more current. If you like Luria, it's worth the read but I wouldn't start with it.

Thorough, yet a little difficult to read... But because of its thoroughness I still give it 5 stars... It details the foundation of neuropsychology, and if you are able to work your way through it, you will be all the richer...

I don't know enough current neuropsych to know how outdated this is, but the history and methodology and concepts of the time (1973) are very clear...except the figures which are captioned in a confusing manner.

Not the easiest read but all worth it: it's a great historical document with insights that are still relevant today.
