3.75 Stars ~ I am consistently fascinated by shifters, of all types, and when their mates are just as strong as they are (and I don’t mean physically) then I am more intrigued than ever. Thus the blurb for this anthology caught my attention and had me diving in.
Tortured Heat by L.J. Longo
In a world of witches – some good, some bad, some strong, some weak – and shifters who attend to them in one way or another, Azatio is a crow and the steward of Madame Lamrow, the oldest, kindest, and most powerful witch in the area. Aza runs her household and watches over her grimoire which has a power all its own. Thariff is an alpha wolf enslaved to Madame Keldrith, a witch who longs for Madame Lamrow’s power, and who hasn’t got a kind bone in her body. Aza has built a lot of walls around his heart and his soul in order to never feel pain and hurt again, while Thariff is equally determined to make him his mate.
What fascinated me about this story is the complexity of one of its main characters. Aza feels a great deal of shame and insecurity about being a crow and, in fact, has nothing to do with any other crows in the area. Since Madame Lamrow saved him when he was seven years old and trying to steal her grimoire, he feels as if the only way to repay her for her kindness is to be the best steward and, to be honest, the very best crow he can be including not being distracted by the foibles of his kind. Aza takes everything literally that Madame Lamrow says to him and doesn’t see her genuine affection for him as an individual. It is this so-called cold reserve of Aza’s that has Thariff enthralled from the beginning. I honestly believe that if Aza had more confidence in himself he would’ve been able to see the reality of what Thariff was doing instead of jumping to the wrong conclusion immediately.
“Like what you see?” I nodded. “Well, you have me. Why do you look so depressed?” “Because…” I wasn’t worthy. I wasn’t going to say that. Because I loved him. I had no right to say that. So, I answered too sharply. “My reasons are my own.”
Wow. This first story is a doozy and had me completely captivated. It’s filled with magic, both light and dark, and two men who seem so disparate but in the end they both want the same thing – to be safe, to be free, and to be loved. This was a fascinating story of fantasy and love, and I was hooked.

Denying The Alpha Collection
Despite what the blurb says there are only 5 short stories in this book. Not 9.
Tortured Heart By L.J. Longo
My Rating: 4 Stars
Azatio is a steward for the good witch, Madam Lamrow. He would do anything to protect her. When he meets the wolf Thariff he slowly wins Aza over. Aza begins to believe maybe he isn't as worthless and unworthy of such a great Alpha after all, but Thariff is being used by evil witch Madam Keldrith. She has used illegal magic to bind Thariff and his pack to her and force them to do her evil deeds. When Thariff is forced to betray Aza will Aza survive the evil witch's torture?
I really liked this short story. It was intriguing and pulled me in. I love Aza especially, but Thariff too.

If You Can't Stand The Heat By Pelaam
Rating: 2 Stars
Quinn works as a chef at a restaurant. When his boss Mark brings in a new head chef, Alpha Barin, Quinn is determined not to like him. Baring is determined to have him as a mate.
I didn't care for this story at all. The MC's had very little chemistry and the background story about the restaurant wasn't intriguing at all.

Five Dollar Mate by Angelique Voisen
Rating: 3 Stars
When Cal's ex, Pierce, moves out Cal sells everything Pierce bought from their shared account. A straggler comes in last minute looking for dishes. A wolf shifter named Diesel and Diesel know immediately that Cal is his mate.
A sweet, short story.

At the Edge by Nell Rockhill
Rating: 2 Stars
Ari owns a little shop. Sorrel is a shifter who is having a harder and harder time turning back into a human from his mountain lion side. Ari creates a tonic, Allum, that turns Sorrel back, but his plant is dying and he knows once it's dead nothing will bring the man he loves to his human side and he will be feral forever.
It was just an okay story. A bit sad.

Hunted by His Alpha by Marie Medina
Rating: 3 Stars
Gregor is an Alpha wolf. Jared is 1/2 fae and 1/2 wolf. When Gregor comes to the land of the fae to finalize a treaty he meets his fated mate, Jared. A 1/2 wolf who can't shift. When Jared rejects Gregor and Gregor insists on The Hunt to capture his mate things may turn out the way both of them want them to.
This was a good short story. I liked both MC's.

These were very fun and entertaining complete short stories. My favorite one was, "Five Dollar Mate", by Angelique Voisen. The story had held me captivated and the romance was so sweet with intriguing main characters. All of these were very heartwarming and truly engrossing. =)

This anthology has a range of interesting stories. If you love erotic tales with fated mates then you’ll probably enjoy Denying the Alpha: Manlove edition
