He's the last Rogue standing, and the wickedest…

Charles Humphrey, the Earl of Lonsdale is infamous for his seductions. With laughing gray eyes and a halo of blond hair, he's every woman's wicked dream. Beneath that devil-may-care grin, he has a painful past that has made him sure love was not for him, even as the rest of his friends, the members of the League of Rogues, settle down in wedded bliss. When he accidentally rescues a mysterious beauty, with eyes as haunted as his own, and shares one life-changing kiss with her, she vanishes in the night. Charles vows to find this angel, who might yet save his soul, but he knows anyone he cares about is in grave danger, when an old enemy resurfaces a final time for revenge…

She's the only woman who can save him…

Lily has secrets, too many secrets. When she's abducted and taken into the London underworld by a gang of nefarious brutes, she's rescued by Charles, the one man who can never know her past. She can't let him discover her feelings or her secrets, but she can't resist sharing one kiss with him before escaping his passionate embrace. That taste of the last bachelor of the League of Rogues leaves her desiring a future she cannot have—especially when her master demands she prove her loyalty in a most deadly way...

Warning: This book contains a scandalous rogue with a heart of gold, a lady who risks it all to save him, and a league of rogues who value friendship and love above all else.

Finally!!! The Villain is caught and I'm done with this series!

I know I'm in the minority and all of my Goodreads friends have given this series high marks. I honestly wouldn't have finished this series except I was determined to see the villain fall.

Lauren Smith's style if writing flowed well, but I had to suspend all reality with this series. This was written as a historical romance, but it read like a modern day novel placed in a historical setting. I try not to be a snob and over criticize books that stray from historical norms...but this series went too far even for me.

Below are just a few examples of the nonsense I endured.

1) A Duke, Viscount, Marquess and friends all kidnap a lady of the ton and hold her against her will because her uncle owes the Duke money.
2) a 19 year old debutante believes she has the makings of a spy and runs off to France on a trumped up mission and ends up shot. *eye roll*
3) one hero's valet, also his best friend for over a year, turns out to be a female. When he see's her in a dress, he falls head over heels in love and never notices that she is the same person.

I knew after book one that this series would try my patience, and it did. I'm so damn glad to be done.

Lauren Smith writes very well but the plots were sooo ridiculous that I constantly rolled my eyes. I usually like overly dominant men and rebellious women, but it has to done correctly. If not, it will ruin a book.

2.5 Meh stars.

The H/h didn't truly interact as love interests until about 40-45% into the book, and when they did, the H fell instantly in love. I didn't really buy it.

Mad About Series Challenge 2023 The League of Rogues. The H & h Charles Humphrey , Earl of Lonsdale and Lily Linley. Charles last to find love. This to me is the conclusion of the League of Rogues since Sir Hugo and his vendetta ended here. However there are a few more tales to tell with Rosiland’s brothers in Scotland and more of the Leagues’ siblings.

Series: The League of Rogues #9
Publication Date: 11/14/18

Charles’ long-awaited book is finally here and it was definitely worth the wait. It hits the ground running and doesn’t let up until the last page – you absolutely won’t be able to put it down. It is filled with excitement, deviousness, life-long friendships, cunning, plots, and a to-die-for romance. Sadly, it is the last of the books for the main group of Rogues, but wonderfully, it isn’t the last of the series. The series will continue with the siblings of the Rogues and their wives and who knows – maybe on down to the children of the Rogues. The book is so exciting that I’m going to have a hard time not including spoilers in the review simply because once I start writing about it, I don’t think I can quit! I see many edits in the future for this review.

You’ll still find excerpts from the Lady Society column interspersed throughout the book and they are always fun to read. You’ll also find spots of humor. As a matter of fact, the very first chapter begins with a humorous scene that showcases the friendship between the Rogues.

Charles Humphrey, the Earl of Lonsdale, has gotten more and more lonely, restless, and almost despairing over the last year. Each of his friends in the League of Rogues has found love and started families and while they still try to include him, he still somehow feels separate and alone. He finds himself more and more often participating in dangerous pass times. One of those is boxing – not at Gentleman Jackson’s, but in the Lewis Street Tunnels. Those are dangerous places to be – very dangerous. While there one night, his would-be opponent wagers a woman, a very unwilling woman, as the prize. Charles cannot let the woman stay with these brutes, so he has to win. Luckily, he is smart, cunning and very good at boxing. Once he has won, he leaves with the woman, she kisses him, tells him her name is Lily, distracts him and disappears. He’s never met such an intriguing woman and he can’t stop thinking of her.

Lily Linley is a woman with many, many secrets and none of them are good – well – except for one. In disguise, she’s spent a lot of time with Charles and she is petrified that he recognized her when he rescued her. He can’t find out her secrets – even though she’s come to admire him – a lot. You’ll love Lily! She had some awful things happen to her, but she is smart and resourceful and has learned to survive within the parameters in which she has to live. If you want a strong heroine, Lily is it.

Hugo is ready to set his end-game in motion and finally have his revenge on Charles and the League. We finally learn all of the history between Charles and Hugo – even Charles doesn’t know all of it. We learn what has driven Hugo to such intense hatred. Hugo has all of his spies in place and he knows what is going on in each of the Leaguer’s home, now it is time for them to act and end it all.

I really wanted to learn more about Phillip Wilkes, the Earl of Kent. I hope that the reason that we didn’t see what happened to him is that he’ll have his own book in the future. If not, I’m disappointed in that. I think maybe he’ll have a book with Charles’ sister.

I highly recommend the book. It is filled with wonderful characters, a lovely romance and non-stop action. You’ll never know what will happen next. You know something will happen, but you don’t know what.

What can I say about this book ,
Charles has fascinated all fans of this series since the beginning, everyone wanting to know the reasons for the animosity between Hugo Waverley and him .
Well sit down an enjoy this totally riveting story from Lauren Smith , it really doesn’t get any better .
If your a fan you’ll know the back story , if this is your first taste I strongly recommend you start at the beginning of the series.
In this Charles meets his love , and his future, battles his nemesis and revisits his past , always in the presence of his friends and brothers in the league and their wives .
I had so many mixed emotions with this book ,
Confusion.. at such a wonderful and complicated plot , but also it was so brilliant , well done Lauren .
Satisfaction .. this couldn’t have been any better in my mind , every plot , storyline and character were perfect.
Sadness.. the fact that I’ve finished the book , that I have to wait for anymore books in the series, which hasn’t finished, they will be back .
This is a book and series that will constantly be reread by me , if I could give it more stars I would,
Highly Recommended!!

Loved this book! I’m so happy for Charles and Lily. Even though this isn’t the last book in the series, the Rogues are all married and happy and I couldn’t be more happy.

I recommend reading this series in order to avoid spoilers.

My favorite of all the books this far! I Loved Charles’ story. And one thing I love about this series is that Lauren Smith keeps the others in the League intimately involved in each story. That keeps everything together in our minds. A really great read. I cannot wait to hear it on Audible.

😊😊

Boa Leitura! Good Reading!

I've spent the whole day debating how many stars to give this book. It's been hard, not because I didn't enjoy it, I really did, but because I've been waiting for this book for a long time and I think that finally having the 'final' instalment leaves me with mixed feelings.
Charles has long been one of my favourite league members, I had a theory or two about the identity of his lady love, (I'm not going to say more here, but I was right!) This was a good read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. So why the hesitation about how many stars to award? Well, two reasons really. Firstly, my favourite league book is His Wicked Seduction. I love Lucien and Horatia's story, part of me wanted Charles to knock it off its perch and while it was good and came very close, it didn't quite manage it. Secondly, although there is the backstory in all of the previous stories, this being the last in the series, this story arc has to reach a conclusion. Of course, I wanted it too, but it did mean that there was a little less time spent on the romance between Charles and his lady. I loved the storyline that dealt with the League and more particularly Charles' past. I'd wanted to know about this since book one. At the same time though, I wanted more of the build-up of romance with Charles and Lily. That would have ended up being a huge book, so is silly to suggest.
I really enjoyed this book, it's just rather bittersweet as it's the last in the main series. I know that there is more to come with other family members and possibly the next generation, but it is the end of the main League members. I might just have to go back to the beginning and read the whole series once again...

“They’re leaving me behind.” Thus was the thought of Charles about all of his friends in The League of Rouges. All married and happy and he was just alone. The Last Rouge Standing. So he goes to take out his feelings in a boxing match in one the dangerous parts of town. Then he finds himself rescuing Lily from a disaster and at her first chance she escapes him. But not before he received an amazing kiss he could not forget!

Lily was enough problems and secrets but she recognized Charles who did not evidently know who she was. There is a lot going on in this wonderful story!

Do the two meet back up? How did Lily know him?
A very engaging story that made me stay up and read into the night! Have loved this entire series and sad this is the last. But good news on upcoming stories from the amazing Lauren Smith!!!

The Last Wicked Rogue 🩷
I was very excited to reach the last book of the League of Rogues official series and the conclusion to the Lord Waverley revenge arc.
I loved the ‘Tom Shipley’ twist and how the League came together and led to a happy ending. Readers also got to see the complete history of Charles and his nemesis, and where the malice began.
Trigger warning for readers- there is sexual abuse within this story.

This is the ninth book of the League of Rogues and is the story of Charles Humphrey, the seventh
Earl of Lonsdale and the last of the League to find his true love. It’s also the story of Lily Linley, a lovely young woman who was orphaned and went into household service, only to be cruelly abused and incredibly used before finding real love.
I never spoil books to those who have yet to read them, that would be just mean. So, let me briefly gloss over some of the most interesting points…then I’ll tell you why I found this story so intriguing and entertaining that I will now go buy and read the other eight books, as well as any future books author Lauren Smith cares to write.
This story delves into the youthful past of the League members and especially that of Charles Humphrey. It’s wonderfully and artfully written and reveals bits and pieces of the intricate puzzle slowly. It gives an expressive picture of the honor and friendship these men held to as they grew into adulthood.
The villain is Hugo…also a schoolmate, but with some real issues with Charles (sorry anything further would spoil it). The sins of the fathers are smoldering in their children and the devastation it causes is epic.
There is, of course, so much more to this marvelous story. However, to describe or tell you parts would spoil the fun of the discovery for you. Here’s some of the reasons I found it impossible to put down.
The conversations are very well written and sprinkled with appropriate amounts of humor and seriousness. The personalities are well depicted, not just explained. I especially loved that the wives of the League members are independent and quite intelligent with missions and means of their own.
The dangers are dramatic and well pictured. The intimate love scenes are sizzling and tender. Lauren Smith paints a story with her words that lets you see and feel the times, the places, the beating hearts and bruising fists.
As you can tell, unless I’m way off my own game, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this marvelously intricate tale. Give it a read. If you haven’t already read the other in this series, like me, you’ll probably be delving into all the others as well. I look forward to reading the previous and next additions to the League of Rogues.

This a hold your breath kind of story. The end to everything is finally near and it is full of shocking twists that make you hold your breath and moments that make you laugh. I never saw any of the twists coming and their instant passion leap off the pages. Slowly all the details of what happened all those years ago come out to explain why he hates them. You will not know everything until the end because he is twisted and you feel sorry for him at times while hating him. I absolutely loved that the wives figured out one of her secrets and the plan they set in motion. I laughed at Emily and her way of chaperoning. I also can perfectly picture him carrying her up the stairs while looking around.

Lily is full of surprises from her training to who she really. I was completely shocked by her and loved it. She was extremely brave and strong to do everything she did especially in the end. That blew me away and had me holding my breath.

Charles has been slowly slipping away from his friends for some time now. He hides behind that smile of his, but he has a heart of gold and is struggling. I always knew he was going to have the most shocking story.

I absolutely loved his mother and sister.

This is the story I’ve been waiting for & it didn’t disappoint. The characterisation is superb, the story is fast paced, it has twists and turns that leave you breathless. The history between Charles & Hugo is finally revealed & the Rogues have their work cut out to foil Hugo’s plans. There’s tension, humour, intrigue, deception & of course romance. I was enthralled from the first page & engrossed until the last, a very fitting story for the last rogue

The League of Rogues is a friendship of 5 aristocrats who became solid friends one fateful night while they attended university. That night they also met and made a vengeful enemy. Each book in the series alludes to the story, so we get bits and pieces as we move through each tale. Yet, Mr. Waverly is the major antagonist along each storyline. Although this series is considered Regency romance - which it is - there is danger and intrigue through out.

As the title suggests, The Last Wicked Rogue is the story of the only Rogue from the League who is not married . So … of course the entire group, especially the wives, decide he needs to find a mate. Remember, “it is universally known that a man with a title and a fortune, is in need of a wife” or some such nonsense.

Ms. Smith had been building the world, the characters and the intrigue for 9 books. She has done a great job of pulling all the story arcs together and providing satisfactory conclusions for the arcs.

I have enjoyed listening to this series and recommend anyone who enjoys intrigue and Regency romance to read / listen to these stories.

I haven't read all of the Wicked Rogues books yet, but I think that Charles is my favorite. The way he is described, he sounds like an angel dropped from heaven, though his actions are far from angelic. Still, he is kind, caring, considerate, honorable, and apparently, blessed with incredibly good looks. And the way he describes Lily, you would think she were an angel dropped from heaven. I guess what I'm saying is that they seem perfectly matched.

The was something very poignant and ethereal about their love, and it is perhaps no coincidence that there are references to Romeo and Juliet. The reader is certainly led to believe a tragic ending is inevitable. And in fact, there is something tragic about it. And hopeful.

Because poetry tends to jump out at me, I have to share this line which made me smile: “Lily was caught in a dream, like a glistening dewdrop suspended on the length of a shimmering strand of spider web at dawn.”

This was the last book of the series, and just as Charles (the main character) I must say I feel a little bit emotional about it.
Out of the whole group of Rogues, Charles was the one I was most curious to read about, and this book certainly did not disappoint. We got all the answers we so anxiously have been waiting - both about his past with Hugo and what happened on that dreadful night all those years ago. And the best part was that even though we had so much to learn, the story never feels rushed. We get bits of information from time to time, and personally I just believe that makes the whole book so much more interesting. We are left on our toes until the very end.
I won't give away any spoilers, but for those who have been following the series like I did, this is definitely a must read. While it was the story I was looking for the most, it did disappoint, and I think it was the perfect ending of this stage in our dear Rogues' lives.

I liked the heroine who had to disguise herself as a man in order to spy on the hero. She spent more than a year in his household and fell in love with him.

The hero on the other hand knew instantly that he loved her, when he saw her for the first time as a woman, albeit in a very dangerous situation. Which is, where the problem lies: I don’t like insta-love stories. They tend to be unbelievable.

The romance between the two heroes in this book wasn’t credible. Although he found out about her deception, he was only - like really !- for an incredibly short time mad at her. There was too much & too quick understanding for the heroine‘s problems.

A rather irritating showdown in the last chapter turned this book into a drama.

This book has everything you could possibly want.

Wow this series really ended with a bang. It was a beautiful romance, a mystery, a murder or two,and a horror story all rolled into one. Its also revealed a lot of surprises and providers a lot of answers.
The first couple of chapters baffled me . I wasn't sure where they were leading but then the real drama started. Plus the really beautiful love affair between Charles and Lily which was so well described.
My one hate was when their time at Cambridge was referred to as SCHOOL!. I know I have read many American books so I am aware why that term is used but this book is set in England.

Now I’ve got to admit that I was absolutely hanging out for this book to be released as I have LOVED this series, but I was also a little hesitant to read it as I was a little afraid how it would end. Hugo Waverley sure turned out to be the baddest of bad guys! Lauren managed to cover both, Charles and Lily’s relationship and the final stage of Hugo’s diabolical attack in a satisfying way and I loved how she wrapped it all up at the end. I am now going to go back and reread this whole series as I absolutely loved each book and I feel like I would enjoy them all even more now, knowing each character so well.

I absolutely adored this book. A great end to a wonderful series. Not your usual historical ronance. The Rogue series reads more like a tale of frienship and revenge with great love stories entertwined.

Charles is a wonderful lead, very human and flawed. Lily is a badass leading lady, I adored her. She is no sniveling miss. She's sensible, strong, caring and very smart. A woman, not à girl. What makes the caracters so great is that we've been watching them in the many previous books and they make sense.

Sometimes the writting is a little on the nose, but you get over it because the story is so compelling.

A must read, but only if you've read the previous books.

WOW!

Not to give anything away, or at least try not to. This will give you the book hangover because you will stay up all night finishing it. There are a lot of twist and turns in this book. Things are finally revealed as to the deep hatred that Hugo has for Charles. Plus the unconditional love that not only Charles finds but also from family & enemies alike. Hurt & anger dissolved. Again, from the first chapter to the last are full of surprises. Thank you again Ms Smith for another gift in the form of words that you have given us, your fans & faithful followers.

Any fan of the series knows and loves Charles, so let me mention his lady since she makes her debut here. She is a triumph! She is self-possessed in an age when women own nothing. She is clever and daring and resourceful. She's even a little bit wicked in the best possible way. Best of all, she opens Charles's heart and brings out his poetic side. It's a joy to read.

Finished it in one day, even thought I didn't want to let go of the series. It's such a tremendous story that I couldn't put it down. Such a delicious ending to the series! Now I want to go back and read them all over again.

This was an amazing ending to the league long lasting war against their enemy.. My heart bleed for the suffering and hardships both h/H went through.. And for a moment it broke me to see what they are up against in the endgame.. But alas Love is definitely the strongest against any enemy.
I am so thrilled to now that this is NOT the last from the league and we get to meet them in the future..
Miss Smith is one of my favorite authors .. I love you ❤ you make me happy every time i turn the final page to your book.

It is so good to see the end of the serious. Though I must confess I have not read all the books, I really wanted to see the chess pieces that heald this story in place began and concluded as the previous books I read only hinted at it.
I enjoyed Charles and lily's story, and just seeing how he was just so quickly to love her dispate all that she had hinden from him was quite remarkable.
I enjoyed the suspense that Lauren Smith created with this story could not guess where some of the chess pieces would land.

After the last few novels, I approached this one with trepidation. I was pleasantly surprised. Bits and pieces did not quite fit or feel real to me. I’m not a fan of a forced plot. However, I enjoyed this story. It was fun and entertaining.

If I could not find another book and this one was sitting on my shelf, I would read it again.

Charles and Lily

Exceptional book well written with wonderful characters. Charles has always felt undeserving lonely and fortunate to have friends he knew he could always count on. Lily or Tom as she was known as his valet he has known and respected until he met a woman one night that would forever save him like the league of rogues would. His half brother never knew what true friendships love was. In the final game he might have seen it but was to late. Lily and Charles were made for each other and saved each other's souls. Would highly recommend this series and author. :)

A worthy finish to the initial League of Rogues whilst dropping in a few interesting hints of rogues to come. An interesting story, well written and action packed. All the usual characters are present to provide an enjoyable completion to the story arc and a satisfactory conclusion for Charles’s story ensuring that the reveal ties up the lose ends that have been left dangling in previous books.
Definitely up to Lauren Smith’s usually standard.
