A Novel Christmas: A Friends to Lovers / Christmas Themed Contemporary Romance

Rate this book
Go to an island, my publisher said. Reclaim your writing mojo, he added. Be inspired, he suggested. Oh, sexy shenanigans, was I inspired. Drew Carolla would do that to a woman. Reclusive and brooding, an ex-pilot-come-sexy-woodcutter-come-luxury-wedding-venue-owner-come…here. Writing romance doesn’t come easy when you don’t have a muse, and I was on a deadline. Four weeks to write my next bestseller or face being dropped by my publisher. Thankfully, watching Drew chop wood, sweaty and shirtless, soon had the words flowing like water through Cornish coastline rock pools. But Drew had his own stories to tell. Why did his luxury wedding venue no longer host weddings? Why did he scoff at the idea of romance? And why, despite that, did he look at me like he wanted to wake up on Christmas morning and find me naked in his bed? Conundrums. Drew was full of them. Too bad I wasn’t writing psychological thrillers. Would Drew Carolla, a man who didn’t believe in romance, inspire my greatest love story or leave me with unfinished chapters? A Novel Christmas is a holiday-themed, friends to lovers, contemporary romance standalone featuring a hot ex-pilot and a sassy romance writer.

Lynsey M. Stewart enjoys writing stories about characters that experience a few bumps in the road before finding their happily ever after (also known as contemporary romance with plenty of heat) She lives with her husband, her soulmate and muse, along with their gorgeous, precious, ridiculously independent little girl. Lynsey began writing after being inspired by great books, amazing writers and wonderful stories that she couldn't stop thinking about long after reading the last word. If she’s not writing, you can usually find her with her head in a book or singing along to music. She’s hopeless, but she enjoys pretending to be Adele every once in a while.

To say I am a fan of this author would be an understatement. Each book of hers is better than the last and that’s saying something, since they’re all fantastic. However, this book is on a totally different level. It is so much more than just a romance novel. This is the type of story you read from classic romance novelists. She didn’t just capture our hearts with a romantic story. She painted a picture with words and captured all the majestic colors of the island where you could feel the sea, smell the heather and breathe the clean air. The story brought us into the world of romance authors and gave us a peak into their process, all the while creating a beautiful love story. At times this story felt like it transported me to a different time period. A world where we should all become familiar with. A place where you could sit and reflect on everything or just free your mind.

Within this story we get to meet Drew and Cal. Drew is a man with a past that he doesn’t want to deal with in his future. However, what he doesn’t realize is that he’s letting his past dictate his future. Cal, is the romance writer from London trying to find her inspiration again. So she goes to Cornwall to find her muse. Where she meets Drew and is immediately fascinated by him. This story takes several twists and turns and makes you want to keep reading. Within the story there are several interesting local characters. These are people you want to meet and learn more about. They are colorful, quirky, and charming. She brings the characters and the various places we visit in the book to life by her attention to details, even down to the dog who has his own personality.

There’s so much I want to write about this book but it wouldn’t be fair to the author. So I suggest you read the blurb for more information and definitely read the book. What I can tell you is that these are two beautifully flawed individuals who are looking to see where their place is in life and love. Questions that arise such as is it worth the risk of letting go and taking a chance? Is isolation a place or is it a state of mind? You can be in a great big city and be alone or you can be on a island and have it all. When or do you decide to take a chance? Is the risk worth a possible reward or heartbreak?

For all the romance readers fear not, you’ll get the smiles, laughs, swoons and heat but you’ll also experience some angst as well as hope and devotion.

As you can tell I was captivated by this book and read it fast, but then I went back and read it again to absorb and experience the magic of it all. Do yourself a favor and become entranced in this wonderful story. You deserve it!

A Novel Christmas is a perfect Christmassy/winter read that will have you wishing you were snuggled by the fire with a glass of wine or a mug of hot chocolate whilst reading it. Without going into spoiler territory (using only the blurb) I loved the uniqueness of this story. With Cal being an author she gave me insight into what the writing process can really be like. I loved witnessing her thought processes and how she worked to overcome her writers’ block, and it was because she was struggling under pressure to put words on paper that led her to one day being on a small plane, heading to a small island and to Drew. The story is mainly told in Cal’s POV but I loved the chapters in which Ms Stewart wrote in Drew’s – I felt that it was perfect in letting me the reader know how he was also feeling.

Cal has such a fabulous personality and I couldn’t help but love her. I have read books previously written by Lynsey and she certainly knows how to write a swoon worthy leading man. With Drew I could see and feel the torment and turmoil of emotions that he was struggling with because of his past experiences, and through Lynsey’s fabulous writing I could feel every emotion that the characters were experiencing. This story had everything that I enjoy when reading a book and there are some amazing sex scenes that you come to expect from a Lynsey M Stewart novel. The connection that Cal and Drew have I could really feel but when a man that doesn’t believe in romance is building a relationship with a romance author, you can expect some bumps along the way.

What I also absolutely loved about this book is how the author created scenes that I could actually envisage. It felt as though this island and the life of its residents were real. I actually want to go there myself just to see if it is, and not only to look at the beautiful landscapes she described but to also experience the wonderful close nit community life that being on an island with only a few inhabitants must have. The descriptions along with the supporting characters in the book all helped to create the perfect picture of visiting or living on this island.

Add this to your winter reading list, although I’m certain that you will still enjoy the book reading it in July. It is such a wonderful story that will have you swooning on one page and then shouting at the characters on the next. You also need to meet Brian, he’s a one off and I’m certain you will love him as much as I do. I can assure that you won’t be disappointed reading this book which I would totally recommend without a second thought.

This. Book. I need more stars than five. So many more stars.
It starts with the dedication. From just that alone you know you are going into a book that the author put her entire soul into. The story is captivating from the get go. Right out of the gate you will be laughing and swooning. You will fall in love with the characters. Your feelings as you continue to read will grow to a point it’s hard to contain them all. The characters are magic, you feel their emotions pouring off of every page. You will giggle with them, fall with them, and cry with them too. You’re heart will break and mend right along with theirs. It’s so wonderfully scripted and beautifully told. I could use every single positive adjective to describe this book and it wouldn’t be enough. This one is for every romance reader out there. I highly recommend it to EVERYONE. It’s legit the perfect contemporary romance. I loved every single word of every single sentence of every single paragraph on every single page and I never wanted it to end. This is hands down my favorite book from this author. But also, it’s one of my top reads of 2018....and of all time. This story wraps you up in a warm romance loving blanket and delivers what we all love....an epic love story that will live in your heart forever. I can’t wait to read it again. And again. And again.

My first book by this author, but definitely will be checking out more. This book had it all. Humor.
Heartbreak. Steamy scenes. Great characters.

Cal is an author struggling to write her next book. She gets sent by her "people" to a cabin for a month hoping she will get "inspired". And inspired she gets! LOL

She stumbles upon Drew, the owner of the cabin and all surrounding it. He's lumberjacky (chopping wood, doing manly man things) and smoking hot. But he's closed off and brooding and their relationship is a bumpy road.

This book will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you believe in love again!

Oh and THAT COVER! Gorgeous!

A great holiday read and a fantastic love story!

I have been a fan of Lynsey M. Stewart's writing ever since her I discovered her first book. She has such a way with words and builds beautiful relationships between her characters. I went into this book knowing that I was going to like it but I never imagined how much this book would consume me and before I was three chapters in I knew that there was something really special about Cal and Drew and that this story was going to be one of my favorites this year.
First off, can I just say this cover is amazing. I read all of my books as ebooks and only buy a paperback if there is something truly special about the book. This was an automatic one-click for me. I can wait to have this beauty setting where I can see it every day.
Now to the story that I can't get out of my mind. Cal is a writer that is struggling to get her "mojo" back. She can't seem to find her inspiration for her next book and with the advice from her boss, she goes on a "retreat" to the wilds of Cornwall. Now, I will be the first to admit I love everything British, but the way Ms. Stewart described Cornwall makes me want to go there that much more. I even looked up some of the places she described and found that what I pictured from her words was exactly the way the places looked...that is truly having a way with words. Once Cal get's to the Island Retreat she meets Drew, who is probably as perfect as a man can get except that he was hurt before and refuses to open his heart to love again. What comes next is a beautiful story of love coming out of a deep bond of friendship and acceptance. I just loved the way Drew was so positive and encouraging of Cal and trying to help her get over her writer's block, and in return Cal tried to show Drew that while it is scary to put yourself out there, living in the past and hiding away is not the best solution.
I know that I probably rambled a lot here, but there was just so much to this book that I loved and I struggle with finding the words to express that. All I can say is please read this book. I promise you that you will not regret it.

I was really looking forward to reading this book, I have only previously read one other book by this author and I loved it.
To be honest, I didn't read the blurb, the front cover was enough to make me download it and want to read it, so I went into this book with no idea what I was getting.

At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like it as it all seemed a bit too predictable, a writer goes to a remote place and falls in love with the only guy there, however I told myself that I had to give it a chance, more than one chapter. I instantly fell in love with Brian when he was on the plane calming Cal down and it is thanks to him that I kept reading. And boy am I glad that I did. The story just kept getting better and better. The twists and turns were unbelievable. Just when you think you had it all figured out what Drews story was, another twist was added, I mean, on his wedding day with his step dad!! who ever saw that coming?
The writing was amazing, the descriptions were spot on and the date to the carol service was simply perfection and I really wished that it was me that was being taken there. I loved that Cal found a kindred spirit with Drew on almost everything, I loved that they talked books and writing and loved to read together and just simply exsist together. The heart ache that Drew went through was heart breaking and to see him being supported by Cal was beautiful, It was nice to have the man with the issues about trust and love and the woman being the strong alpha character and being the strong presence needed. Everything Drew went through emotionally was beautifully written and very real, learning to trust again is hard, even when you really want to, even when you think you've found the one.
It was a simply beautiful book and certainly helped me get in the Christmas spirit. You really must read it. I have the extended epilogue to read as I just had to sign up to the news letter to see even more of their happily ever after.

A NOVEL CHRISTMAS by Lynsey M. Stewart was a delightful read. Firstly, it ticks the boxes for reader looking for a romance book that celebrates the holiday season: Cold weather and someone to snuggle with, delicious food, fitting decorations and trips to take in the splendour of Christmas events.

And then there’s our couple, Caroline (Cal) and Drew. Yowsers! The attraction between them is magnetic. Given their circumstances, their hesitation in coming together is understandable but propinquity and an abundance of feelings sees them fascinated with one another.

I thought Cal was a great heroine. I thought she was strong; she was prepared to reveal her vulnerability but refused to be exploited. I appreciated both her and Drew’s openness when talking to each other. As hurtful and confusing as they may have felt, it was never as a result of everyday miscommunication.

As pleasing as Cal’s character was, the star for me was Drew. This is the second book in a short period of time I’ve read where there’s somewhat of a role reversal in a romance novel, and I am loving it. Here it’s Drew that’s been significantly burned by his previous relationship; he’s the one doing most of the doubting about his ability to not only love again but place his trust and love in a woman and, in turn, give her everything she needs. His uncertainty and indecision often incenses Cal but he is always coming from a place of authenticity.

I have enjoyed the author’s previous books but this is one is definitely my favourite to date.

I had the pleasure of reading A Novel Christmas early, and I knew immediately it was a book that readers are going to enjoy. A holiday story, both vacation and Christmas, it makes you feel cozy and warm. Don't let that fool you though, the story is also packed full of steam and humor.

Lynsey Stewart keeps getting better and better. She doesn't just tell a story of the romance writer and the resort owner, she paints a picture that has me wanting to book a ticket to Cornwall. This is a friends-to-lovers romance, and the tension between the H and h is amazing (if you're into that kind of thing). The author develops these characters in an extremely realistic way, and you can't help but cheer for them to overcome their individual struggles and give in to the pull they have towards one another. There are also some amazing friendships in this story, something this author always manages to do well, and some true laugh out loud moments.

This story also gives you an extremely realistic glimpse into the life of a writer, which I love. It is also the first book that has mentioned my favorite new platform, Book+Main. It's so cool that the author shared her love of the platform through her writing.

A Novel Christmas is a definite one-click that will get you in the mood for snow and hot chocolate and love.

There is just something about this author that makes me one click anything she writes. Seriously. I could not gobble up her words fast enough. A Novel Christmas is her latest release and just like the title - it's holiday themed. And so freaking good. You won't be able to put it down. From page one, when we meet funny, quirky Cal. And it will hold your attention until the very, very end.

This is the story of Drew and Cal. Cal basically exiles herself to an island to get her writing mojo back. There she meets sexy Drew. Sexy, but seriously damaged Drew. And so their story ensues. There's push and pull between these two like no other I've read before. There's angst and drama and lots of self inflicted demons that need to be ironed out before anything can truly develop. I loved Cal's character so much. Don't get me wrong I adored Drew, but Cal is fierce and brings a level of humor to the table that is absolutely refreshing. Oh, and there's an awesome dog. So, for me, that was just the icing on the cake.

Bottom line? You will love this Christmas love story. You will decide that snow is overrated and want to book yourself a trip to a tropical island this holiday season from the perfectly described atmosphere the author so brilliantly describes. Trust me here, folks. This story is everything you've been waiting for this holiday season.

I had just read too deep and darkish books so when I knew that I would be reading the first Christmas novel of the season I was really excited.

Lynsey M Stewart is an author that you know you will get great words and a wonderful story and this one did not disappoint, I am not really into Christmas and Christmas themed books and movies but I really loved the sound of this book, plus it helps that I was based in a place that I have never visited but have heard of all my life. Being born in England but never been to Cornwall really makes me want to go there now.

This story had me hooked from the first page where we met Cal and we got to know her beautiful personalty and she was funny.

Then we met Drew who was holding a lot of hurt and finding out how is heart was hurt kept me turning the pages especially with the fantastic chemistry between the two main characters and the when or won’t they pull that they had.

This was such a super sweet romance, with some really great side characters like Brian loved him such a sweet man.

This is a story of second chances, romance it was heartwarming, heartbreaking and great story that was hot and sexy as well, loved absolutely everything about this book and Lynsey M Stewart sure knows how to write a fantastic book

I fell in love with the Music and Letters series almost two years ago and since then, I have devoured every book Lynsey M. Stewart has written since. I was so excited to read this holiday story and I fell just as hard for Cal and Drew.

From the very beginning, I was drawn into these characters. They reached out and grabbed me and wouldn't let go. This book has so much emotion that I laughed and cried and felt everything that they felt. My favorite part about this book is that it's almost like a love letter to romance novels. You feel every bit of passion about this genre that Cal feels and I wanted to scream from the highest mountain that *this* is what romance is. It's empowerment, it's emotion, it's fearlessness when all you feel is fear. I loved the relationship between Cal and Drew but I also loved her friendships and strong family. I loved that two people who weren't sure the risks were worth the rewards were proven wrong. I loved EVERYTHING about this story.

This book is going to become my new holiday tradition. The book I read to get into the Christmas spirit. I can't wait to see what comes next.

Oh My! There are not enough stars out there to adequately apply to the quality and caliber of this book. Lynsey Stewart is a storyteller that weaves a romance that pulls you in and makes you root for the characters. Cal Dixon is a writer with writers block. So her Editor tells her to go to an island and find inspiration. That inspiration comes in the form of Drew, a sexy, often shirtless woodcutter, pilot and deeply flawed man who has given up on romance and has vowed that he won't ever let anyone break his heart again. But Drew's heart doesn't appear to have gotten the memo. Cal and Drew have a chemistry that can't be ignored, but Drew puts up barriers at every turn. The writers block has gone, but with Drew alternating between looking at Cal like he wants to bury himself in her silky softness forever or running for the hills, Cal is in danger of getting whiplash! All Cal wants is a happy ending, both for her book and for her, but when a sexy woodcutter won't trust Cal with his heart it seems unlikely that will happen.

A Romantic Masterpiece!

The romantic love story between Cal and Drew is epic. This author’s style, her words are like a magic wand that pulls you into her spell and you follow effortlessly through her words and feelings an it’s just magical.

I’m afraid I will fail epically trying to express my feelings about this book. This story is told from a unique side, that of a romance writer who falls in love with a reclusive man who has given up on love. It’s full of humor, flirting, and trial and error and false starts, and beautiful victories until you get your “happily ever after”.

As for this writer’s style, here are her own words.

“I was the kind of romance writer that loved to get lost in the worlds I created, almost feeling the same flutters of butterflies as I fell in love alongside my characters. But I didn’t believe in writing stereotypical phrases and setting unrealistic goals for love. Human behaviour was wide-ranging and unique. I wanted my words to reflect that.”

Well done Lynsey. Good on you!

Another Fantastic read. How do you get the guy to fall in love with you? Write a story about him but change the names to protect the innocent or not so innocent. This Christmas story is very well written. A great story line with depth. You have a jinxed male hero who is determined to live a life a solidutide. You have a strong heroine who is determined to crack his shell. It was refreshing to read a story of a beta male for once. Everyone but the Drew seems to love this Cal. Cal makes friends with Brian the farmer and Archie the dog.
I know this place was fictional in the story but I can so imagine Karensa as a beautiful place on this island. The images the author built, I felt I was right in the story with Drew and Cal.
The references to Christian Grey the best and had me laughing. If you follow this author, then you would understand these references she tosses in the book.
I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a feel good read.

This book! Cal is a strong, sweet heroine who is battling writer’s block on her next novel. Her publisher sends her for a getaway in Cornwall where she meets owner Drew. He is closed off, broken, and resistant to opening his heart again to this luminous writer staying in one of his cottages. I appreciate the struggle they have in forming a friendship and a relationship with the obstacles they must overcome. Cal is so open even when Drew hurts her while he tries to protect himself. It is a reminder to each of us that allowing others in may bring pain, but not allowing others in can deny ourselves immeasurable joy.

Why did I leave this one so long, it is one of an amazing heartwarming, romantic, soul searching and funny novel which will definitely make you feel warm inside.

The story is set as Cal a writer has reached a word block and is setting off for a long overdue break to unwind and find that spark again. On arrival she is collected and taken to her cottage by Drew, he is the perfect gentleman and also drop dead gorgeous. Quite early on Cal finds she is opening up to Drew more than she would to anyone and there is an instant attraction. Drew is single but incredibly closed off, you will later on find out as the story progresses that Drew has been and is still going through a traumatic experience from a previous relationship at formulating his feelings and move on or so he thinks.

Cal has had previous relationships but is happy being single and does not have the time to dedicate to a new relationship. As the early days go by both Cal and Drew start to get under each other’s skin and their is a kind of magnetic automatic pull towards one another as they start to spend more time with one another, Drew showing Cal the sights and helping Drew with the endless list of tasks to be completed learning that the business has reached a stumbling block and Drew being hesitant to open up and accept any help or support not just from Cal but the local community, who soon becomes firm friends with Cal too.

As time progresses the chemistry intensifies and both of them are slowly starting to push the sexual boundaries and when Drew starts to read some of Cals books why is he imagining her talking to him on a personal level when reaching the sexual scenes and why is he feeling this way.

How long will it take for them both to admit their feelings to one another and open up about the past helping each other to move forward, but is a relationship wrote in the stars and is this how it was always meant to be.

Once you start you will not be able to put down so book out lots of time.

This is a cute story. Light on the Christmas theme. I don't actually remember them spending Christmas day together. The book's time frame goes beyond Christmas and into January.

It's obvious this book is written by a inexperienced author. There's some sentences that made no sense and quite a few grammar issues. It could have used one more edit, in my opinion.

The story itself was really good. The recluse hero and city romance novelist with writers block fall in love. Who would of thunk it?! This book is a special treat for avid romance readers! The heroine is the perfect romance novelist and all her descriptions of her job and writing is really cool.

There's quite a few sexy scenes, most of them towards the last third of the book. There's descriptions of masterbation and oral sex as well. Quite a bit of swearing, many uses of the F bomb.

While I enjoyed this story, I'm not ready to jump into the next Lynsey M Stewart book, but I'm not opposed to it in the future. I hope she edits them better next time (or gets a better editor).

Unique and interesting

This story. It was unique and interesting, and actually felt as if the author was writing about herself. For that, I loved it. The steamy scenes were definitely steamy, and the emotional scenes were spot on too... my only complaint was that it felt... long. I felt like I had to “push through” in places, that the story was losing my attention. All the back and forth, WHEN DOES IT END. 🤦🏼‍♀️ BUT. Though I found it frustrating, it was also perfect, cuz THATS HOW THE HEROINE FELT too. So I guess I’m saying that, even where I was ready to move onto a new book, this book was perfect.

Time to move to Cornwall! A Novel Christmas was the first book I’ve read by Lynsey M. Stewart but it won’t be the last! I loved the story of learning to be fearless and love again after past heartbreak and betrayal. The setting is magical and somewhere I’d love to be, especially if I’d find a hunky pilot/woodcutter/wedding venue owner/handyman/book loving dog owner delivering breakfast baskets! While “Christmas” is in the title it is a story to be savored year around. I enjoyed the “story in a story” aspect. This is a keeper.

Great story

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were fantastic and the story was original and eye opening. I felt like I was getting to see behind the curtains to a writer’s life. The actual romance part of the story was very well written. I loved Cal’s straightforward approach to life as much as I loved Drew’s use of humor to cover his pain.

The descriptions of the island were beautiful and I felt like I could really see the bench, the cabins, the farm store, etc.

Great book!

Perfect Christmas Story!

I loved Cal and Drew! The first part of this book was slower due to building characters and setting the story but the last 1/2 or 2/3 was wonderful! I loved how their friendship was built before any romance. I adored that Cal was strong and pulled them along when Drew was hesitant. This was an easy read with a happy ending. I would definitely recommend it!

Truly novel

Loved this story of o hopeless romantic and a guarded heartbroken hero.
That it was set in one of my favourite places in the country (I holiday in Bude twice a year), endeared the story to me even more.
The characters are cleverly written, the flirtatious interaction is spot on. The nuances of Brian is Cornwall personified.
Absolutely breathtakingly brilliant.
I laughed, cried, swooned and awww’ed my way through this book.
Thank you.

A Novel Christmas

Christmas time is coming so I figured now was the perfect time to pick up a holiday romance. This was a cute book. I love when the MC is a writer I love the insight into the writhing process and the behind the scenes peak we get for what it’s really like to write a book - it truly leaves me in awe every time I think about it. Cal was so smart and funny and Drew was her perfect swoon muse. Can’t wait to read my holiday romances.

The perfect romance

This book is so adorable. It’s funny, it’s intense, it’s so freaking hot! And it’s undeniably romantic... you feel every emotion as the characters do. Oh and I love each of the characters, and the story has left me with an itch to go to Cornwall. I just couldn’t put this down, and I didn’t want it to end. I need to read more by this author!

Drew & Cal

I'm in love. I feel like I can relate to Drew on so many levels. I had something similar happen to me in my past and it is so hard to get over and to be able to move forward with your life and fall in love again . To trust again. But it is possible and Cal with her determination and love for Drew reminds me of the patience and love my husband had for me.

Great story

I really enjoyed this book....my first by this author. I loved the story of a romance writer writing about a romance writer. I’m definitely going to check out more of her books.
