Remember that chase scene in Max Mad: Fury Road where the villains in their wild array of vehicles chase the heroes across the blasted desert landscape? Rick Remender basically copies that scenario exactly in this Death or Glory volume, minus the albino guitar player strapped to a million speakers.

Yes, it's a copy, but it's still a breathless bit of storytelling, particularly with Bengal's effortlessly thrilling artwork. Glory and her convoy attempt to escape the Cowboys who are in cahoots with the organ dealers. She just needs to cross the Mexican border, where a doctor can replace her father's liver. Will she make it? Does it matter? (Not really)

The body count in Death or Glory is fairly insane: be prepared to lose some important characters. Remender basically knows the first volume was nuts, so he's done the only thing possible to keep readers' interest: upped the ante. Death or Glory is a silly, wholly implausible read, but it's never less than giddy fun.

A dash of apocalyptic car chasing, a pinch of misguided villainy, and a smidgeon of the impractical, DEATH OR GLORY #2 envelops Glory Owen and her crew with every fraction of chaos one might conjure on such an outlandish adventure. It takes only one or two chapters before readers can truly toss reality out of the window and simply enjoy the grim humor and traumatic violence promised at this comic's outset.

Glory and her allies, truckers and malcontents, have screwed over Toby and various mafia types. Now, somewhere in the desert southwest of Phoenix, the hard part begins. Now, the crew makes a run for the border. Funnily enough, Glory is the only one with a real grudge to bear. Everyone else is simply working their butt off so they aren't in debt to the next big wolf down the line. Toby is a con man and a coward, but he doesn't have the grim-reaper gaze of Mr. Rime, whose resources make him feared far and wide. And yet, Mr. Rime himself finds it pertinent to ally with an unnamed coyote who runs an underground casino. The coyote, it turns out, fears a pimp with body dysmorphia. And so on down the line.

DEATH OR GLORY #2 is far more interesting if one disregards the lineage of disgruntled uncertainty and simply drinks in the wildness. Two and a half issues of this volume are dedicated to a manic car chase in the Sonoran Desert. Glory's '77 Chevelle SS is still kicking. But readers also see any number of sand crawlers, big rigs, and other big-wheeled monstrosities. Impractical, sure, but the majesty is in the unrealistic, of seeing giant trucks getting flipped or buzzed into pieces, or watching characters getting splattered onto windshields at 100+ mph.

Bengal's work is good. A number of pages are crammed with too many panels, but this occasional over-slicing is serviceable when a scene moves quickly. For example, when Glory pulls into a border town seeking help, it's a frantic few moments between darting around body-chop men-for-hire, mafia thugs, and Mr. Rime and "the sisters" in a helicopter. Several panels are horizontally stacked. This is not preferable in most circumstances, but proves an acceptable means of sequencing fast, unflinching, bloody chaos in the heat of the moment.

This is a fun comic. DEATH OR GLORY #2 has a few plot holes but doesn't seem particularly bothered by them. Some characters die off-panel, which is a disappointment, while others seem contentedly resurrected no matter how uncommon the circumstances. And while it is ridiculous to think one could drive a muscle car all of the way across the southern Arizona desert in one day, it does make for some cool action.

Glory's mission to save her dad Red reaches its ultimate conclusion in this final volume of Death or Glory.

After the events of the last volume, Remender throws us directly back into the action with Glory and her friends speeding away from the bad guys. The next issues are basically a high speed chase through the desert, where the stakes are deadlier than ever. And look, an action scene is a tough thing to do successfully in a comic, especially when most of the comic is during a high speed, high stakes chase like this. It was very Mad Max-esque, and if you have seen that movie, its highly visual and highly dependent on the fact that you can see the visuals clearly. Don't get me wrong, I think Bengal is a great artist, but sometimes the action is lost because there is alot going on. So in those times, the momentum would break which caused some issues with pacing.

Along with that, there were times where the plot was very convenient. Remender usually let's things develop organically, but I think the pace of the story along with the fact that it was going to wrap up in issue 11, forced him to make these convenient plot choices in order to reach its conclusion.

I will say that the series overall is fun, and the ending is sad yet at the same time hopeful. Which I think is what Red would have wanted for Glory, a hopeful future ahead of her. While this series isn't my favorite thing Remender has written, it was still entertaining and fun. If you're a fan of his writing, or if you enjoy action heavy comics - especially with cars - then this one is for you.

Pretty similar to the first volume. My gripes:

1) Really wants to have a follow-up series at the end there, but I’m just not sure anyone wants that involving the characters it would focus on (Toby and the sheriff).

2) A lot of talk about living free and off the grid for a series that never really grapples with what any of that means. It’s pining for some poorly articulated Western ideal which…

3) Leads to the issue of how much this is just taking Fury Road and resetting it in a pre-apocalyptic American Southwest. But not meaningfully as it says almost nothing about the peoples of those regions.

I want to like this more but the characters were just, overall, so bland. And at the end, there’s almost no emotional payoff for 90% of the character deaths because the cast is too big and too generic within this story to matter to the reader. It’s a great aesthetic on top of a pretty uninspired narrative, and that’s enough for it to be mid-tier entertainment in my book.

Stuff I liked:

The right length - no padding, no stretching.
The art - how do you do that much car chase in a comic and keep it understandable and fun? Impressive.
The characters - all solid, mostly relatable.
The narration - felt genuine and was thought-provoking.
The tone - exciting, sometimes funny, nasty, beautiful, sundrenched-USA-desert feels.

I've really enjoyed *some* of Remender's titles and this is another one. Happy.

2.5 to 3 stars. The plot itself was not overly engaging, and characters hardly memorable but – holy moly – that illustration! Bengal’s work on this series is astounding. How he translates speed and animation onto the still page is unreal. I feel like, at some points, I actually started hallucinating the cars screeching around corners, tyres squealing.

It’s just a shame that it was in service of such a ‘meh’ story.

NOTE: This book review is done based on my reading of the individual issues in quick succession. I have not read the actually paperback, but the story content remains the same.

Took right off where the previous volume ended (huehuehue Xd) and the pace was steady and accelerated. Right up until the end everything got better and better. Few things bothered me, mainly the fact I am not into this kind of story so much. But to my surprise the MASSIVE chase that went down in this volume was not dreading at all. Its meaningfulness and proper execution made it very enjoyable. Losses didn't come cheap and victories were sweet. But what hit me the most was the ending of this story. Not at all what I hoped nor expected it to be. I couldn't have hoped for a better way to close off this book. Because Remender delivered a consistency in the way the plot progressed and its characters played their roles, I could enjoy this not-my-cup-of-tea a lot.

This high-octane, heart-pounding thriller is equal parts No Country for Old Men and Mad Max: Fury Road. It's a speed chase story that addresses the horrors of human trafficking and organ harvesting. It's a heart-pounding, tear-jerking tale about what one woman would do to save her father and to help complete strangers. Sure, this tale is brutal but its got guts and heart.

The huge car chase here is a Mad-Max-level delight. Still just glad this is a quick fun series with some things to say about capitalism in between showing people getting run over by the biggest trucks.

meh. mishmash storytelling... paltry follow-up to first volume. ridiculous action, furious toretto family meets fury road... boring in the end, because I've seen it all in different places done far better.

The first volume was a pleasure. This, however, had a distinct lack of plot. This was essentially 4/5ths a car chase. Lots of action, very little interest from me.
