Featuring Weekly Video Teachings with Francis Chan from RightNow Media Welcome to the companion study guide for RightNow Media's The Gospel of Mark, featuring Francis Chan. This 11-week Bible study, filmed on location in Israel, is meant to be more than an intellectual analysis of Mark's gospel. It's a journey intended to lead you along in the footsteps of Jesus as he walks the road from Galilee to Jerusalem. This guide will require more of you than simply reading the Bible and answering a few questions. It'll ask you to engage your heart and your hands as well-feeling the full impact of Mark's writing as well as putting into action the challenges his gospel makes to his reader. Whether you complete this study alone or in a group, the questions are designed to encourage engagement with the videos and reflection on the teachings. At the end of the journey-and at the end of this book-you'll have a very important question to Will you follow Jesus?
I can't say as I agree with everything that Francis Chan, who created the video for which this book is a study guide, said. He seems to be saying that, in order to be a true disciple of Jesus, you should be prepared to give up everything - including your life. On one hand, I don't disagree with that. On the other hand... are we all meant to give up everything? Are we expected to quit our jobs, sell our homes and travel around guiding others onto the road to discipleship? That's quite a lot to ask.
There are a fair number of questions that are straightforward study guide type questions, with straightforward answers. (i.e. - Who was it that went to Jesus's tomb?) At the same time, there are a fair number of thought-provoking questions. Some of them, I don't have answers for even now - having finished reading the study guide. I'm still praying about the answers to those questions.
It's not a bad book, even if you don't agree with everything Chan thinks and I feel like I got a lot out of it. It's definitely better to work through it with a group of people, as I did. (We read this book as part of a Bible study.) I can't imagine trying to read through it alone, without any input from other people, but I suppose it could be doable.
It's worth noting: there's a video series that goes with this study, but... it as $80, so we opted to just read the book along with our Bibles. It might have added something to have watched the videos each week as well.
