Award-winning Journalist and USA Today bestselling author Jeffery H. Haskell thinks he should always be himself… unless he can be Spider-Man. Then, he should be Spidey. He’s a lifelong lover of comic books and science fiction, and he owns his geek status by quoting Aliens and Star Trek at every given opportunity. When he realized he could make a living writing about his obsessions, he jumped at the chance. With the incredible support of his amazing wife and spectacular children, Jeffery lives the dream of bringing his imagination to the page and on occasion, he writes about love and marriage.
Awesome. I don't normally like super hero type reads but this is different. There is a normal woman behind it. Hurt, grieving and alone. What an absolutely terrific plot. Hope she gets that scumbag of an ex-husband in the next book. Great characters. Vivid, real, emotive and normal in fact they wish to see justice carried out. She has been fired from her modelling agency and come home for Thanksgiving. Only to see her mother and father killed whilst her ex-husband watched. As she tries to save her young sister they are both skewered by a sword with her sister dying in front of her eyes. Six months later she wakes up to find all authority under the thumb of the same gang her ex is working for. Everyone she turns to for help is murdered and she is constantly on the run. Taking a bus seems the safest way out of the city. However on the bus she reads articles about a superhero that kept his city clean of the gangs. Can she get the reporter to give her information to find him? Will he help her? Are the superheroes all human or do they have something extra? Watch as she makes the journey to become the next protector of the downtrodden.
The book was pretty good after the protagonist stopped whining about poor Hur.
I enjoyed Madison’s character, after she started her training. The first part of the book was her complaining too much about poor her tragic her her losing her family. After that the books Pace picked up quite a bit. Second of all no superhero can act without support, her giving away all of Joseph‘s money makes no sense, remember when she started she was penny less, I can see giving some money to the homeless shelter but she Hass to have operating expenses. Grand Central Station in New York is a train station not a bus station if you like superheroes such as the punisher you will enjoy this book. I will read the next one when it is released.
The fact that this sociopath has designated herself judge, jury and executioner is bad enough. But the fact that after absorbing the alien entity which gives her superpowers, she genuinely feels physical euphoria while butchering 'The Bad Guys' as viciously and sadistically as possible? Especially when the first target of her vengeance campaign is also a cold-blooded sociopath whose greatest pleasure comes from killing people... DO YOU SEE THE IRONY!!!???
Call me a wuss, a prude or a purist all you want, but no 'Superhero' should ever be like this. Because if we wanted to hear about people who commit mass murder while still self-righteously declaring that they're the 'Good Guys,' then we'd just listen to audiobooks about American Cops or the IDF.
I really enjoyed this book. As the headline of this review implies, the character is EXTREMELY derivative of Batman (family killed, dedicates life to training self into a deadly weapon of the night to eradicate crime), but I happen to love Batman and have been reading the comics for years, so this isn't so different than a new artist/comic book writer coming up with a different twist on the familiar story. Overall, the characters were great, the writing was fast-paced, and I was totally engaged in the world he created. There were a lot of typos throughout the book so I wish there had been a little more time spent proofreading and polishing... but all in all it was a very satisfying read and I'll probably check out another book or two by this author at some point.
Some regular girl, that has no superhero powers, who trains only for 3 months, not years, 3 months, is supposed to fight superheroes who can lift tons and who can fly. This has to be made by ChatGPT, because that's the only excuse I can accept for this nonological nonsense. The other book that takes place in this universe, that's called Arson, makes more sense. The main character is super smart, and she builds basically an Iron Man suit, so it makes sense why she can keep up with superheroes. The character in this has no money and she's not really that smart, so I don't really see any sense in this book.
Mari is absolutely badass!!!! In love with her!!!! Storyline was awesome and in need of more!!!! Only downside was I wish it was longer!!!! Wouldn't it be awesome if Mari had a superpower outside of the Wraith that she could steal or copy the power of the supers and keep them forever!!!! Also she will obviously get a love interest, so he has to be lethal, badass, and huge!!!! Who he can love and support Mari in all, and not be a nuisance to her!!?? Can't wait for the second book, please hurry!!!!
I can't say how many superhero books I've given up on after 10 pages. Haskell gets that not every hero is superman with twenty different powers. also, he's taken into consideration how powers may act in the real world. Haskell seems to prefer writing women as lead characters. that's all fine and dandy but I'd like to find a male lead that's a good read. For now, I'll gladly read this author's work and you should as well.
There was a twist I didn’t expect. This is dark but not dismal. This is not like the other superhero lit I’ve read. The action is pretty intense without being vulgarly graphic. It’s an action novel, for sure. It has one of the better female leads I’ve read. I bought the next two halfway through this one. I really liked it.
A ton of action, lots of intrigue and suspense. Strong characters and a flowing storyline keep everything tied together. If you like the Punisher, or Mack Bolan, the Executioner, then pick this up. Its a blast!
Three months to become a bad ass killer? Years aren't enough time to become as good as she is. The author could have at least pretended years had gone by this point just really bothered me. Other than that it was a short but pleasant read.
Great story that grips you from the first chapter! I enjoyed taking this journey along with Madisun and it has a lot of nice callbacks to some of your favorite superheroes. Definitely recommended!
Jeffery has proven his ability to write big superhero action in Arsenal but this series is far more street level. A good opening but this doesn't feel like a complete story at all. Still fun and compelling though.
Very well written all around. Will definitely catch more of this. Only reason this isn't a 4 star novel is because the MC isnt super relatable to me specifically. Could see this easily being a legit 4 or even 5 star for those that do.
Either I enjoyed this book so much that I didn't want it to end or it was short and I didn't want it to end. I can't wait to read what she is going to do to the rest.
An entry into the author's Superhero universe. His main series is great, but it was fun to expand it a little bit with a different kind of main character.
There's tons of action, the world building expands the universe a little bit, and it was a fun ride. Lots of killing, but not super dark.
Overall it was a good, quick read that definitely scratched the itch for fast paced action. I'd say if you like the author's other series, or if you like characters looking for vengeance like the Punisher, then this is a good book for you.
You gotta love a vigilante super hero who is devoid of the dull moral conflict and resultant hand wringing we see so often. Madi is after some very VERY bad people. She fixes the problem. Beautiful.
Spoiler Alert: The rest of the Wraith series is even better. I hate to say this is the weakest book in the series, but... as he continues, Mr. Haskell really warms to his subject. Madi is far more persistent AND resilient than you see in this opening chapter. Bloodthirsty fun.
Overall it was pretty enjoyable, however the writing wasn’t quite as good. There was also a little bit of slow pacing during many parts of the book until she actually started to get her training. The book really didn’t start to move until she made her transition.
It was fine, but it had less impact once superpowers were obtained by the protagonist. The series would have been better if the protagonist did not have powers. Also, it’s slightly irritating that the author seems to have done no research on blades, but probably went to the KaBar sales website and knew a couple of extra words, such as ‘tang’ which I don’t think the author knew the meaning of.
Gave it five stars , but it needed a little polishing. There were some grammar mistakes that better editing would have caught. All in all , though , a worthwhile read .
