Carmen doesn't remember what life was like before the aliens arrived, or before the human population was decimated by extraterrestrial disease. She lives now in one of the few remaining settlements of survivors, subsisting off the land in rural Texas. But when her best friend Theo is taken captive, she's forced to venture to the neighboring alien colony—the place of her childhood—to strike a precarious bargain for his freedom. As she faces surprising figures from her past and navigates loss and loyalty, she finds herself torn between worlds—and between the conflicting desires of her own heart.
I love our heroine Carmen! She is such a great character, she is very brave and navigates her world with strength and the willingness to teach and learn. I really enjoyed the world building and the storyline was very interesting. I definitely will continue to read this author.
