Pursuit of Happiness

Rate this book
Senator Meredith Mitchell has been groomed from young adulthood for a future run for president, and as scion of a political dynasty, every public and private move she makes is carefully calculated. But Meredith’s focus on the right causes, the right people, and the right timing evaporates when she meets Stevie Palmer, a dashing public defender with a hard knock past. A firebrand like Stevie is the last person she should be associating with, especially when Meredith's political future turns into right now, and her party urges her to enter the presidential race. Attorney Stevie Palmer refuses to be limited by the low expectations of others or by taking the politically safe route. Cautious, media-perfect presidential candidate Meredith Mitchell is the last woman she expected to fall for, but Stevie has never hesitated to pursue her passions. When her client reveals a Mitchell family scandal that could derail Meredith's career, everything Meredith and Stevie value hangs in the balance, including Meredith's shot at the presidency and their chance at love.

**'A writer writes not only with their ideas but also with their instincts and their intuition..The skill of writing is to create a context in which many readers can think...'

4.5stars!
Taite's bibliography has been increasing quantitatively and qualitatively year by year and a few months by a few months but for me this her latest effort is far beyond anything she has indulged in. Honing her considerable writing skills and knowledge into an arena fill of politics, romance and legal dramatics that might either send some readers scurrying or taking a chance with this impeccable,fast-paced and at the same time unimaginable well written story.
From the enthusiastic campaign staffers and door knockers to the hardcore Chief of staffs and state or national conventioneers,Ms.Taite brings into vivid focus what its like to work for a candidate anyone support and all the cause in which she (Meredith) truly believe in -- all of which said author explored thoroughly and candidly on these pages that reads like an op-ed to an intriguing story. The complex and sometimes complicated relationship between Meredith & Stevie is both informative and exciting. Also the varied characters mingle with the times and each other, constantly will remind readers of the link between Presidential candidate and Public defender, and also all the dealings with political friends and foes alike. Connections to her family is plentiful throughout this storyline as it features valuable materials drawn from her interactions with them.
With her sister (Jen),Stevie and closest friends by her side,Meredith will rely on all their support, trust, friendship and even their collaborative skills that grew into a strong mutual admiration from all their combine talents which eventually might lead her right to the Oval Office.
The rewards, frustrations, highs, lows, lack of sleep, conflicting thoughts, finding Love and passion for something or anything in which someone truly believe in then this book could not have been better written by anyone but Carsen Taite. Recommended read!

3.5 Stars. This was another enjoyable read by Taite. I would not put this in my favorites of Taite pile but I did like this book. A nice little surprise was we get to spend some time with characters from her books Courtship and A More Perfect Union. This book does standalone so you don’t have to read any other first. However, it was nice seeing what Addison and Julia from Courtship was up to so reading Courtship first would be a bonus.

The best way to describe this book would be fluffy politics. It takes place in a wonderful world were most of the highest power positions are run by lesbians. How wonderful to be true, but it’s not and you have to suspend disbelief a bit. Don’t read this book expecting a hard hitting political drama-romance, that’s not this. This is fun politics to keep you mind off of what’s going on in the real world.

The two main characters are Meredith (a presidential candidate) and Stevie (a public defender). I thought Meredith was well written and I enjoyed watching her navigating a run to try to become president. I was totally hooked into her story. I do feel like Stevie’s character was not as well put together. Taite writes lawyers better than most authors, but I felt Stevie’s roll didn’t add much until the end. I felt it was a missed opportunity. I also had a hard time seeing exactly why Meredith was so enamored by Stevie. Stevie was missing that punch for me to make her irresistible. I believed they cared for each other, I just didn’t get the chemistry I really wanted.

My last little quibble is I thought the ending was too short. Other reviewers have mentioned this and they are right on. It was too quick and I needed another chapter or two to really warp up the ending. Luckily this didn’t ruin the story but it does add to why this was not a full 4 star book for me.

I have lost count but I think this is around the 17th full length book I have read by Taite. That’s a lot when you really think about it. And in all that time I have never rated one below 3 stars. Her writing career is pretty amazing. If you are a Taite fan you will probably enjoy this. If you just want some happy politics to take your mind off the real world, this book is for you. If Taite keeps writing, I’ll keep reading.

An ARC was given to me by BSB for a honest review.

I enjoy Taite’s books. I love the powerful, ethical women she creates and I wish the utopian world she portrays really existed. Senator Meredith Mitchell is taken with public defender Stevie Palmer from the moment she sees her at the Senate Judiciary Committee meeting. Stevie can’t believe her own boldness in asking the senator to dinner. Unfortunately their attraction will have to bridge some wide divides. Meredith comes from a well-known political family and is rumoured to be considering running for president. She’s used to the media and lack of privacy. Stevie has been burnt by the press and doesn’t feel she’s cut out for being in the public eye.

This is a bit of a slow-burn romance but more in time passing than in actually getting to know each other. Their respective jobs keep their liaisons limited combined with their wanting to keep their new relationship private. The politics is interesting but also simple enough to understand. Stevie’s case could have played a more important role. I wish the main characters had had more time together and more dialogue. That said, I still enjoyed it and liked the cameos of characters from some of Taite’s other novels.

Book received from Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books for an honest review.

Carsen Taite usually writes about the legal world, but with her latest book Pursuit of Happiness we take a side-step into the world of politics. We follow senator Meredith Mitchell and attorney Stevie Palmer. They meet, go on a tentative date and when attraction strikes they are exploring the possibilities of taking it to the next level when all of a sudden Meredith’s career takes an unexpected turn.

Running for president was somewhat of a dream for the future but certainly not at this point in time. Pursuit of Happiness is all about the race to the presidency, 2 hardworking career women and a fledgling love affair. Will they be brave enough to take a chance on this love when personal time is in such short supply?

The subplot is Stevie’s criminal case. It gets interesting when it turns out there could be a possible link to the Mitchell clan.

The book was a bit on the short side (242 pages) to successfully work through both storylines. The author tries to keep it moving by jumping forward in time but overall I felt Meredith and Stevie didn’t have enough scenes together to make you feel their romance. The political part was not too heavy and well written all be it a bit utopian (half the women in power are out and proud lesbians, if only). I would have liked it better if Tate had tacked on a few more chapters.

f/f

Themes: democrats, politics, family, career women, two different worlds, paparazzi hounds, hacking scandal, running for president.

I am a big fan of Carsen Taite's books. I love the plots she writes, I love practically everything about her books. Color me biased, but I'm in love with all the expert terminology in law and the cases she presents in the books. This book is no exception! Plus, her characters are always likeable and they seem real.
I was very fond of Stevie and Meredith and their relationship, the way it was developing seemed real and down to earth; it was some fatal love on first sight, even though there was attraction between these two from the beginning.
One thing I wasn't very fond of, however, was the end. It seemed abrupt, rushed and somehow cut short. I am partial to more rounded, more detailed endings, and this one wasn't like that. Besides that one point, the book is fantastic! 4.5 stars

3.3 stars.

It's a solid read but I wasn't a fan of how the book focused mostly on politics that kept them apart rather on the actual romance. I wanted a romance first. So I guess the rating is lowered due to my wrong expectations. Otherwise, nothing much to mention. It's well written. The political side is executed well but I'm not American so it's not really my cup of tea.

While the writing is good there's also nothing really memorable about this book. I finished it last week and I've already forgotten most things about it. Zero memory of any side characters and I can barely recall the main ones. The book is good but not great.

Carsen Taite is a master in weaving tales based on the political and the legal. If you like romance where politicians and lawyers are involved then her books are for you.

This is a story between a politician and a lawyer where being in the constant eye of the public can become a hindrance to their budding relationship.

There wasn't any real romance between the two, with one being hopeful and the other being fearful.

The story focused mainly on their respective careers which was interesting in my opinion with their romance being somewhat of a subplot with them being mostly apart rather than together. Still it was a nice little read.

Senator Meredith Mitchell, member of an American political dynasty, is expected to become the first American female and openly lesbian president. When she meets public defender Stevie Palmer their mutual attraction is undeniable. Stevie is dedicated to her job and has strong convictions. Trying to date a presidential candidate gets tricky when her privacy is threatened but it becomes impossible when one of Steve's clients might implicate the Senator's family in a corruption case. But even the potentially most powerful person in the world needs a chance at love, doesn't she?

This book is part of a group of political-themed thrillers written by this author along with 'Courtship' and 'A more perfect union'. The main characters of those books make an appearance here which is good to catch up with their stories.

There's a huge amount of political content in this book, I wouldn't recommend it to people who aren't interested in the issue. Even for a person knowledgeable in politics it might be too much as the romance is left in the background. The chemistry is limited because the mains are separated most of the book and, unfortunately, the sexual tension isn't hot on the scale either.

The novel also introduces a subplot with one of Steve's cases with potential legal implications for Meredith's family. At parts it is full of legal jargon hard to follow for the rest of us and feels a bit rushed at the end. The political plot follows the Senator's bid for the presidency which is a bit simplified but not enough to avoid some technicalities that might confuse some readers. I personally enjoyed it but I have a degree in political science and an interest in American politics.

Overall, an entertaining read for anyone interested in American politics and its legal system but a bit lacking in the romance department. 3.5 stars.

I am not going to lie, I was very hesitant to pick up a book based on politics. In today’s political climate it is hard enough to read the news every day without becoming more and more depressed. I read to escape, so whether its fact or fictional politics, is that an area I want to wade into? The author is was what sold me on this one. I like Taite’s style of writing. She is consistent in terms of quality and always writes strong female characters that are as intelligent as they are beautiful.

Senator Meredith Mitchel is part of a political dynasty. Her family knows the political arena well. Being president is a dream of Meredith’s but that’s years from now. When the story begins, Meredith is fully backing another female Democrat, a senior senator from Texas who has been positioning herself for the presidency for years. A wrench is suddenly thrown in Merideth's plan to wait out this presidential cycle. A damning scandal hits and suddenly Meredith’s name has shot to the very top of the candidate wish list. The biggest question is does she go for it, and everyone is pushing for a yes, everyone but the women she has developed the biggest crush on.

Our other main is Stevie Palmer. Stevie is a public defender in DC who avoids politics at all cost. She will testify before Congress on criminal justice reform but anything more than that is too much. Her focus is on her work and ensuring justice for her clients. Through hard work and a ton of sacrifices, Stevie has found herself in a job she loves and friends she can count on. As attracted as she is to Senator Mitchel dating a presidential nominee is overwhelming and the spotlight is blinding.

First off, yes this book deals with politics, but I would not say it is not a political heavy book. I think more than anything it makes you wish this was real life and not what we are currently living through. I really liked both characters and I thought their romance was sweet but the story needed to focus on them as much as it did on Meredith's campaign. I felt it tilted more towards a drama than a true romance. My biggest fault with this book is that the ending was way too fast and abrupt. It felt like the pacing was off when the book was screaming for more chapters. We hit the crescendo of the story and then bam the end. I needed more and I wanted more from this book. Still good, just could have been great. 3 stars

I have mixed feelings about this book. I did like the story. The whole trope about the woman running for president made me very very happy. But then I had a lot of thoughts about how the relationship between the leads progressed. I didn't understand half their actions.

This story was so different from the other works by this author. There wasn't much legal procedure to begin with and there was too much politics for me to understand. For a non US citizen I was so lost when the politics talk started. And then there was the fact that the whole relationship felt disconnected. While I did love Stevie and Meredith, some of the stuff they did had me going 'what the heck'. The ending was way too abrupt. One moment they're like naaa we can't do this anymore and the next moment they're making out like crazy. I don't understand these events xD
In conclusion, this can be an amazing book if you're familiar with politics. It's a pleasant read but proceed cautiously

This is my first Carsen Taite book. I’ve been holding back to read her novels since I got into lesfic because politics-flavored lesbian romance don’t really appeal much to me (along with and especially paranormal, supernatural, sci-fi ones) but thankfully I gave it a try because I enjoyed the story. I enjoyed her writing. True to the adage that a writer must write about what she knows best, Carsen Taite is a pro. Pursuit of Happiness may seem short considering the magnitude of the subjects tackled in the story—she could have explored further into it—but I would say good thing she didn’t. Good thing she trimmed down the “boring” details of American politics. It’s written just how I like it. The main characters were solid, the dialogues were legit.
Giving this 4 stars. I’ll read more from this author.

Ummm....I've been trying to formulate something succinct to write about this book for over a day now, but can't seem to figure out what I want to say. I didn't mind this book, it kept me going through to the end and had a few ok moments. The intimate scene was good, and the fact they didn;t jump into bed right away led to some decent build up.

But it really, really lacked depth. This is a fantasy fluff book interspersed with what could be interesting subject matter, but just isn't. And maybe that's the point, don't think too hard about the lack of reality here and just go with the flow. Which is what I did, but it's something I'll read once and not want to revisit. I did like the character of Stevie, but there was a flatness there..... We get glimpses of a troubled past that I would have looooved to delve into in order to understand her more, but no details are given. Meredith is running for president even though all she seems to do is smile at people and give a good hand shake to the masses. No real personality, I couldn't get a read on her. I'd actually like to know more about Addison and Julia, or Rook and Zoey. (wait, is this a series? do these character show up elsewhere?)

I'll be totally honest and admit I bought this book for the cover, because YES. Helllooooo ladies.

Liked the blurb and sound interesting enough. And that was i got after I’ve completed the book - liked it (checked) and interesting (checked). My ratings though: just a 3 for me. Lots of potential for POH to be a 5 star read for me especially when it featured gorgeous, powerful, intelligent femmes and that push & pull attractions between the 2 MCs (Meredith and Stevie).

A lot of the scenes or issues faced by the MCs were just skimmed through or touch and go. No in-depth writing or explanation... some might like it and some might not. I would have like to read a little more... And that ending, like WHAT? Why the abrupt ending?? I thought I missed a few pages but nope... that I did not. The End 🙂

I really love Carsen Taite and I really love romances that include politics. To me, both main characters are like-able and I could feel the chemistry between them. I liked the premise of the book...it's hard for me to not love a presidential romance. Also enjoyable is seeing characters from the author's past books.

That being said, I wish we would have seen more interaction between the two. By the end of the book they're coming out in a very public way and professing their love. Considering that they we apart for a good bit of the time that the book covered, it seems super quick to me. Like others, I wish the ending wasn't wrapped up quite so fast.

Although I have some gripes, I still highly recommend reading this.

This book is set in some sort of political utopia where the upper echelons of power (the chief justice, multiple White House staff, and potentially the next president) are crawling with relatively young, good-looking lesbians, the current president is a Democrat with the highest favorability ratings in history, and Texas has a female Democratic senator. On one hand, I suppose that sounds like a pretty nice world to live in! Given the current state of affairs, I can understand wanting to escape into that. But on the other hand, I think I prefer political books to reflect and comment on our current reality. After just having read Charlotte Walsh Likes To Win and seeing how that book explored the realities of being a woman in a stressful campaign during the 2018 midterms, this book's take on politics seemed almost unbearably fluffy at times. Also, I thought it was very weird that despite the political landscape in the book looking nothing like the real one, the author inserted several real-life problems (Russians infiltrating social media, a WikiLeaks-like organization releasing hacked emails), which caused a bit of scandal, but nothing like the systemic issues and huge consequences they have in reality. So, that rang a bit false to me--why inject these major real-life issues into a world that doesn't have the consequences that we're facing because of them? Yes the characters face some issues throughout the book, but at the end of the day everything is fluffy and wonderful for both them and the country.

However, I don't mean to be too hard on the book--it's a romance, so it can be forgiven a bit of fluff, and I can understand why someone would enjoy escaping into a world that is full of successful, good-looking lesbians and Democrats enjoying tons of political success, and where we don't have a narcissistic buffoon in the White House. I think I am too much of a hardened political junkie to really take all that very seriously (though I would certainly trade our current government for it if I could!), but the romance was cute and enjoyable. I won't read any other books in this series, but I would recommend this for readers who want a light romance and don't mind a lot of details about a political campaign set in a fantasy political climate.

4 stars. A political romance between a senator running for president and an attorney who wants nothing to do with the media frenzy that comes to being with such a well known figure. I really enjoyed this. Meredith is charming and I can totally see why she would run for president. She has been preparing for it her whole life pretty much. Stevie is also likable if not a bit flighty. Which is completely understandable. I loved the romance between the two of them. They had great chemistry.

The media and the family scandal were also very entertaining and kept me hooked. I love family secrets and scandals so all of that worked for me. The writing was good and it’s paced really well. I was never bored nor did I feel like the plot ever dragged at any point.

I think my main complaint is that it takes until the last three pages for them to get back together and that was frustrating. It happened way too late and I would’ve liked to see it happen a lot sooner than that. Other than that this was a fun read with a great romance and political intrigue.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think Meredith and Stevie are my new favourite couple that Taite’s written (I’m so sorry Parker and Morgan!). They’re brilliant, funny, and the chemistry between them is out of control. I was totally invested in their relationship, even while I was side-eying Meredith during their crisis moment.

I couldn't get enough of this book.

Meredith is a Senator. Stevie is a Public Defender. Their paths cross when Meredith has to question Stevie in regards to a minimum sentencing rule. Stevie wants more time to persuade the Senator in her favor so invites her to dinner. Thus begins their complex and challenging courtship. Stevie wants nothing to do with the public scrutiny that would come from dating the Senator/maybe presidential candidate.. Meredith isn't sure anything can work but she can't stay away from Stevie.

Sometimes I end up speed reading through parts of books. I never did that with this one. I digested each page slowly. Completely intrigued with the political backdrop. I loved the characters and was rooting for them despite not knowing how they could ever possibly make it work. This truly was so complex and seemingly impossible.

I almost didn't want to read this because another review said they didn't like the ending. I was prepared for something bad to happen to ruin the awesome experience I was having. Turns out, all that worrying was for nothing. Enjoyed this one from beginning to end. I was sad when it was over.

I would love it if the author made this into a series. It could be interesting to see what further challenges would need to be navigated and if they could be overcome.

Phenomenal book. I didn't want it to finish.

After the Presidential candidate drops out, Senator Meredith Mitchell is next in line for the race. She's been groomed for this moment her whole life, but she's also just found a love interest, Stevie, who distances herself from the limelight and scrutiny from the press. Can Meredith have both? The presidency and the women of her dreams?

This book is not only my new favourite Carsen Taite novel, but it is also going into my all-time favourite Lesfic bookshelf too. It's smart, sexy, and packs one hell of a romantic punch!

The back story is also intriguing and kept me gripped to the very end. It was a nice addition to an amazing love story!!

There aren't many books that I would be okay with no epilogue, but this one stands among the few. That doesn't mean I'm not willing to beg Carsen Taite for a sequel because I'd love to continue Stevie and Meredith's love story, but the ending to this book was perfect.

The chemistry in this book is excellent. The build-up to the sexual intimacy is slow, but it made me really love these characters more. There was no rushing into sex, but when it happened, it was beautiful and special.

Stevie and Meredith are my definition of soul mates, and I couldn't get enough... Please do a sequel, Carsen?!? No angst, just more of the Presidential Fairytale for Meredith and Stevie. I'm already planning when I can reread this.

Pursuit of Happiness is the third book I've read by Taite. Actually, my first ever NetGalley book was Taite's A More Perfect Union, which came out December 2017. I'd requested it on a whim and ended up really enjoying it to the point of seeking out more books in the lesfic genre. This one features a few recurring characters from A More Perfect Union and an earlier Taite book I haven't read, but you don't need to read those before reading this one.

As you can probably guess from the titles, Taite often writes about politics and the law. One thing I like about that is her stories feature strong women with tough jobs. In Pursuit of Happiness, Meredith is a Democratic senator and and Stevie is a public defender. Both are career-driven but find themselves drawn together after meeting at a senate hearing. But things get complicated when Meredith gets a last-minute opportunity to run in the primaries for the chance to be the Democratic presidential nominee, and Stevie's not sure she wants the exposure that would come with dating a presidential candidate.

I requested this title because I was interested in seeing how a female presidential candidate was portrayed. Unfortunately, even though I downloaded this in December, I had to talk myself into actually starting this one because current politics have left a bad taste in my mouth. Once I started it, though, it was smooth sailing. Taite's writing is pleasant and easy to read, and this book is only about 230 pages. I was surprised that after the first chapter, I was already 10% in.

I liked both Meredith and Stevie as main characters, especially in that they're both portrayed as wanting to serve the public even though they do it in very different ways. Their chemistry wasn't amazing, though, and I think that's because they get together too quickly and there wasn't enough build-up. I wish I knew both heroines better as individuals because that would've told me more about why they liked each other.

Which brings me to my biggest complaint--the length. This book covers a lot of time, from the fall before an election year all the way to the next inauguration, but it's only 230-ish pages. I really feel like Taite could have made this 100 pages longer. That would've helped flesh out not only the relationship but the situations each character found themselves in.

And one last minor quibble. This is from the synopsis: "When her client reveals a Mitchell family scandal that could derail Meredith's career, everything Meredith and Stevie value hangs in the balance, including Meredith's shot at the presidency and their chance at love." Without digging too much into spoilers, I take issue with that being in the synopsis because it happens after the 50% point and because it didn't seem like it was used to as great an extent as it could have been.

Overall, this is a sweet romance with an interesting political backdrop that touches on current events without being as rage-inducing as actual current events. Because at least in fiction, the good guys win and love prevails. I'd recommend this for Carsen Taite fans and readers of political romance.

Thanks to NetGalley, Bold Strokes Books, and Carsen Taite for the e-copy.

Carsen Taite is most of the times a guarantee for a good read but her last effort disappointed me. It's not that the writing was bad, but having Meredith, the aspiring next president of the US putting so much effort into chasing after public defender Stevie Palmer, in the middle of her electoral campaign, sounded highly unbelievable to me. I understand that this is a light read and a romance but the thing is that I couldn't see what was that special thing about Stevie that made Meredith wanting to be with her at all costs. Their story was more or less them meeting through work, Stevie inviting Meredith for a drink in order to discuss a trial and then Meredith immediately inviting her back as her plus one for a high profile wedding (Addison and Julia's from her previous book). Talking about an absurd plot, especially when their supposed chemistry was not evident at all and their scenes together were not giving away a connection of such a strong level.
The book was basically a push - pull between the two main characters. Stevie's concerns about being scrutinized and chased by the journalists 24/7 for being the president's gf were totally justified, so she decided to end things early before major feelings were involved. But no, Meredith was not giving up on them so she was luring Stevie back, then Stevie was changing her mind (she didn't want to be on the spotlight, this life was not for her etc) and she was cutting things off. This happened 3-4 times during the book and for me spoiled the romantic development of the story . The ending was really abrupt and absurd to me since Stevie wanted to just go to the inauguration party in order to have closure (!) and suddenly she was dancing away her fears and hesitations with the President! This transition from ex-gf to almost First Lady happened in literally the last page and I feel that there should have been at least an epilogue or another chapter.

Pursuit of Happiness was an enjoyable read. Senator Meredith Mitchell meets attorney Stevie Palmer during a testimony on Capital Hill. The two begin seeing each other, but because of both of their busy schedule they really can’t get a relationship going. During the course of the book, one of Stevie’s client may have some information on The Mitchell family that could end Meredith’s run for President.

So what worked? I love the political aspect of this book. I haven’t read a lot of romances involving Politics. It was fresh and new for me. Just different from the other books out there. What also worked is the attraction between Meredith and Stevie. It was instant attraction. They are able to go out several times before becoming intimate. The book moves quickly, but the Author balances the pace of the book with enough details.

There was only two small problems. At times I was confused with who the many other characters were. Lastly, I didn’t feel that the MCs interacted enough to fall in love.

I rate this one 4 stars.

Politics befitting of the times. Senator Meredith Mitchell, member of an American political dynasty maybe ready for the political run of her life. Attorney Stevie Palmer refuses to be limited by low expectations directed at her by others. Two strong women that held my interest throughout the read. I thought the author did a good job weaving in the current political times without embellishing much at all. I was pleased that the politics was not over the top and heavy. I appreciate the main characters' self-talk because it provided a realistic look at the process people go through while making decisions.

Enjoyed it - but looking back I think "well, not much of a story" with a lot of what if's which are swept up with single sentences. So if marking now, would assume a 4*, but as my nose came out of the book it was 5* & that's where I'm leaving it. (I've created my marking system & need to go with it!)

I am giving this 3.7 ⭐'s.

I really enjoyed reading this book, as I am always very interested in reading and learning more about American legal system and its politics. It was nice to see most powerful positions in the country being help by not just women, but lesbian women, although we all sadly know that we're still very far from seeing such thing happen any time soon :( that being said, I really enjoyed being immersed in a world where this was the case.

That being said, I did miss not having more drama and action in this story. The romance was rather quick for me, but also rather slow, as we only saw them say their 'i love yous' at the very end of the book and I would've loved nothing more than to read about Stevie and Meredith's relationship when they are together and how they handled what came next in the storyline. I would've also loved seeing more interaction between the main characters, as a lot of the story was told during the times when they were apart.

I guess this book does call for a sequel, as I want to know more about what comes next in their relationship, how Stevie reveals more about her past and parents to Meredith, and just generally answering the many questions that I think the book left unanswered.

I recommend this book to people who are interested in a romantic story that takes place within the American legal and political systems, although both legal and political issues and processes are not explored in great depth here. I think that this book is more of an easy read that you can read in parts, as I found that I could put it away for a day and easily come back to it another day, without feeling anxious about missing something out.

Carsen Taite's latest, "Pursuit of Happiness," was one of the must-read books in 2018 that I was looking forward to explore especially due to its subject matter. Having always been fascinated with and intrigued by the US political and justice systems (since they're so different from our own, in fact, most of the world's!) - the good AND the bad - and knowing that I can always count on Taite to give me a bloody good read about said subject matters, all wrapped in romance or thriller in lesfic to boot, I expected no less when I started reading this book. Let's just say...there's a reason why Taite is me go-to lesfic author for anything related to the US legal/political matters. Because she delivers. Every. Single. Time.

I'm glad I read "A More Perfect Union" not long ago so the story was still fresh in me head. I was delighted when Rook and Zoey showed up in this book! Not only that, but Addison and Julia (from "Courtship") also made an appearance, much to me heart's content! It was like meeting old mates after having not seen them a while, you know. So, I was feeling warm and fuzzy when these enchanting characters whom I really enjoyed knowing about from the aforementioned books, welcomed the two newest members (protagonists), Stevie and Meredith, into the fold, in the same universe Taite has apparently created for this political/legal team.

Back to this latest story...

3.5 Stars. I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. This story is about Meredith Mitchell, a senator from New York who is part of a political dynasty. She is becoming the focus of a run for president, especially after the other promising candidate has to drop out. During a Committee Hearing, Meredith meets Stevie Palmer, a pubic defender. Stevie asks Meredith to meet her for dinner to discuss their mutual hearing, and from then, they can't seem to keep away from each other. They both want to spend time with each other, even with their busy schedules. Meredith's even gets busier as she aims for a run for president. Stevie is unsure of how she will deal with Meredith being in the spotlight and Stevie wanting a quiet life.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought by the description. I wanted to keep reading because Stevie and Meredith did not have as many interactions as I would like and I kept reading to get to them. The interactions they did have were very good and had a lot of character development. They both developed as the book progresses. They have a lot of tension throughout the book, as they should and can't be together. It was a good book that I would recommend if you enjoy books about politics. It was a solid book, and I have never read this author before either. It makes me consider other books by Carsen Taite.

Two women meet by chance and find there's an instant connection however both women know that nothing more can come from this strange an instant attraction. The first woman is Stevie Palmer, A public defender attorney working for the federal government. Stevie learned at an early age that it was up to her to work hard to make a life for herself as she had no support or encouragement from her family. So all she knows is hard work with little time for anything else. The second woman is senator Meredith Mitchell, a successful and popular senator because she seems to do the right thing for people, she's kind and considerate and well bred into politics. Meredith comes from a successful political family and she has worked hard her whole career because she believed representing people was an important job and needed her full attention . However lately Meredith is tired of having her personal life take a backseat to politics and she wished she had a partner in her life. She believes Stevie is that person, however given Meredith's rise in the political system and the notoriety that is attached to it Stevie wants no part of that type of lifestyle. Meredith and Stevie develop a very sweet friendship that suddenly changes with a kiss. Is it possible for these two to have a relationship against all odds or is the political system with all of its ramifications too much for the two of them?

This is a terrific book and Carson Taite is a very gifted writer. She does not let her writing get distracted by non-relevant information that does not lead to store forward forward she does not let her writing get distracted by non-relevant information that does not lead to story forward . The way she developed the two characters of Meredith and Steve he drew me in from the very beginning of the story. When I finish the story I immediately re-read it because it was just that good.
