White Pointer

Rate this book
Great White Sharks were once hunted to near extinction. But now they're back. And in the resort town of Surf Shore, people are dying. Carson Sheridan has dedicated her life to shark conservation, but can't deny the horrific series of attacks that point unerringly to a massive Great White – all off the same beach – all at the same time of year. Great Whites in California are in historically large numbers and record sizes. But the waters off Surf Shore are particularly deadly and Carson is about to discover why. Is it a single killer? A big aggressive shark, returning every season? Or, even worse, is it an exploding population – an ocean full of twenty-foot monsters? And why here at Surf Shore? Again and Again? Carson is determined to find the reason... and the answer just might cost her life.

I’ve read a huge amount of killer shark books. Why? Because they’re always fun. However, with so many similar stories out there, it’s rare that one stands out and does something really unique. Now what John Lee Schneider did here was not have a ruthless, killing machine, taking out victims left and right. In fact, there was so little here focused on shark-related kills that I was shocked. However, it worked really, really well. The focus was kept on the human leads, Carson, Cody, and Lauren, and even a few of the notable great whites, Big Rhonda and Bloody Mary. And it aimed to showcase the fish as predatory animals, using their instincts to survive. No other wacky agends or ambitions, like in Jaws the Revenge, which is horrendous in every way. Why did the shark roar like King Kong? And why did Michael Caine accept the role as Hoagie?! Anyway, I don’t want to downplay the shark-related action here in White Pointer. We still get a satisfying amount of action and even a few good kills. And the fact that this was kept so short, avoided the story from getting boring, with a reduced amount of gore. But it all worked really well and it was a very enjoyable experience. I look forward to what I assume is a three part series, the next focused on orcas, Blackfish Down, and the final being Blackfish White Pointer. An underwater showdown of epic proportions. I don’t normally like falling in series, but I’m into this one.

It was the cover that attracted me to the book and I was hoping to get a scary, bloody sharky creature feature from it but it didn't turn out that way. We follow the story with rebellious daredevil Carson who likes doing dumb things like following sharks in a tiny unsafe boat and riding on the back of great white sharks to get attention for herself, one of thereasons why her relationship with her boyfriend fell apart. Cody is a surfer who dislikes the risks she takes and she refuses to care what he thinks. We also see the story following Carson's best friend Lauren who also studies sharks and is curious about a change in their migration habits. Lauren has heard bad things about Cody so she is less than thrilled when unexpected circumstances throw them together.

This story was more of an emotional drama concerning Carson, Cody and Lauren but not in a love triangle way. The strained truce between Cody and Lauren is not a romantic one which I was glad of but the focus was more on them and their issues, along with a snide journalist who is annoying Cody for imput for a story. It is Cody's annoyance that leads to Lauren's fateful decision to get involved in a shark diving with the journalist that leads several people to a dangerous shark encounter. There just wasn't enough shark in it for me! There is a good shark scene at the start of the book which sets the scene but basically it goes into the issues of Lauren and Cody's connections to Carson for most of the book, before a good shark encounter at the end of the book. That ending was tense and interesting but for me the book lacked much of interest in the middle. The writing was decent overall and I might still try the author again but it wasn't the plot I was expecting so a little disappointed. Decent enough read.

2.5 stars.

4.5 ⭐s Huge Great White Sharks 🦈

Not sure what to expect when I first began reading this book other than there would be Sharks - Yay! The MCs were two young women who were knowledgeable and intense in their passion for Great Whites. This book takes place off the California coast versus Australia or Florida where I've visited regularly tracking my huge Creature Feature animals.

The adventurous young women and their swimming with Sharks videos brought them fame, infamy, and a love of the Beasts they swam and videoed from Shark cages. The marine biologists tagged and named some of the Sharks especially the ones with distinctive personalities and enormous size. This book had a nice underlying story that set it apart from other books in the genre.

This was a good, quick book. It's a little different from the monster books I usually read, like the stuff from Steve Alten. I love the Meg books. However, this was a little more true to the animals that exist in the reality setting of today. No giant shark, not even quite the size of the Jaws shark, but still a big shark. It's a fun read.

This was a pretty good read. It’s no Jaws but it’s not a bad book by any means. Not that much actual shark actions, probably only twoish notable scenes with the rest of the book sandwiched in between. But it was enjoyable and I’d probably read it again. Recommend to anyone who loves a good shark story.

Big Rhonda just die already!

Cody to the rescue! This story filled in a lot of the missing backstory for the 3 rd book. This was a quick read and had lots of death. Get the books and leave your reviews.

A realistic "Jaws"-type read

I enjoyed it. It kind of invokes the idea of "Jaws" meets "57 Meters down." It was not bad at all.

Big sharks with attitude

A good storyline with good characters, human and sharks both. I enjoyed the suspense of the shark attacks and would enjoy a sequel.

Way too short. Lots of things I really enjoyed about it but over all unsatisfying.
