Flying solo can be harder than it looks ... A warm-hearted rural romance about finding your way home. Flying solo for the first time had been the greatest high of Anna Kelly's life. So when the chance of a dream job as a pilot with the Royal Flying Doctor Service comes up she takes it, even though she has to leave her home in Adelaide and move to remote Broken Hill - a place she had hoped she would never see again.

The bad memories the town provokes remind Anna why she keeps men at arm's length but as her work proves fulfilling, her housemate becomes a friend and a warm community grows around her, Anna is surprised to discover that Broken Hill is starting to feel like home.

But there is no such thing as plain sailing and with errant mothers, vengeful ex-patients and determined exes on the prowl, life is becoming increasingly complicated. More than that, the distractingly attractive Flight Nurse Nick Harrison seems keen to get to know her better, and he has a way of finding a path through her defences. But will he still want her if the truth comes out?

Anna Kelly loved her job as pilot with the RFDS, and now based in Broken Hill, her old home town, she was finding things much the same as they’d been all those years before. The only issue she had was her fifteen-year-old daughter, Isabelle whom she’d left in Adelaide - and missed desperately – she was living at the boarding school and Anna’s sister Teresa was on hand if Izzy needed anything. Anna settled in easily in Broken Hill, house sharing with Beth.

Nick Harrison was in Broken Hill as a fill-in casual Flight Nurse – his life in Sydney had imploded and Broken Hill was where his mother was; where he’d lived for much of his youth, so the offer had come at an opportune time. His mother was misbehaving, as she was wont to do, and his frustration with her continued…

With their shift work often coinciding, Anna and Nick became friends, although Anna kept her emotions firmly locked away. Flying to outlying properties and rural districts to take clinics, pick up patients and transfer them back to Broken Hill or Adelaide was the dream job Anna had always wanted. But trouble had a way of finding Anna – and Nick as it turned out. What would be the outcome for these two friends?

Home at Last by Aussie author Meredith Appleyard is a delightful medical rural romance, set in and around Broken Hill, NSW, with the RFDS (Royal Flying Doctor Service) at its centre. The vast countryside and fascinating insight into the RFDS culture was well done. I’ve loved this author’s previous work, and this was no different. Highly recommended.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Flying has been a great joy for Anna since the first time she took to the air. When a job comes up as a pilot with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, she takes it even though it means moving to Broken Hill, which she hoped never to see again. Even though it means leaving her teenage daughter Izzy, at her private school and being cared for by her sister Teresa. Due to events in her past Anna has more than a few trust issues, particularly when it comes to men. In Broken Hill Anna is hesitant to make friends socially with some of the men and in particular the flight nurse Nick Harrison. Anna has her secrets, secrets not even her housemate Beth knows. What will happen if those secrets are revealed? Although he is living in Broken Hill now where he also grew up, Nick has a life back in Sydney that he needs to sort out. As well as that can Nick break down the wall Anna has set up?
This story got me in quite easily. I liked the setting and the way Anna is pilot for such a great organisation and the insights into the work that RFDS covers. Anna is a very strong character. I also liked the other main characters, Beth, Nick, Izzy and Marlene, Nick’s mother, who is living in her car when the reader first meets her. The story is one of choices and consequences, family, relationships and moving on from the past. It also highlights some of the issues living in outback places. Though I haven’t been to Broken Hill it was easy to picture it as it is described so well. Both Nick and Anna make decisions and choices that only serve to complicate matters. At times things could have been resolved with more communication but then that’s also real life. Sometimes people are hesitant to commit, to reveal too much because of hurts and issues in the past.
Another very engaging Aussie rural read that had my attention from start to finish, even when I didn’t agree with or understand some of the decisions made. It definitely has the ring of authenticity about it, as it deals with the isolation of outback life and the importance of close supportive relationships.

I felt like a change from Historical Fiction and I decided the read Home at Last by Meredith Appleyard.

Single mum Anna Kelly has worked really hard to get her pilots license, she returns to Broken Hill to work for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and it’s her dream job.
She’s pretty sure no one will remember her from sixteen years ago when her dad was the high school principal and she has no idea she went to school with the hunky flight nurse Nick Harrison. All those years ago Nick had a huge secret crush on beautiful Anna and she didn’t remember him at all! Anna has been hurt once, she doesn’t want to get her heart broken again and she’s happy being single. Sharing a house with midwife Beth is never boring, before she knows it Anna is enjoying life in Broken Hill, she meets some interesting local characters, is she ready to fall in love again and introduce her teenage daughter Izzy to Nick?

Home at Last is a brilliant book, the characters are interesting and quirky and I love reading books about the Flying Doctors Service, providing medical care to remote Australian properties, it's the perfect setting for a romantic story and four stars from me. I have shared my review on Goodreads, Amazon Australia, Kobo, Twitter, Facebook and my blog. https://karrenreadsbooks.blogspot.com/

Home At Last was my first medical based romance and also my first book about the Royal Flying Doctor Service. I really enjoyed all the details about the different cases they are called to and the difficulties with medical help in really remote areas. The RFDS is a valuable life saving service and Appleyard brings to the fore some areas we don’t often think about such as the difficulties of shift working, the long shifts and the lack of adequate staff. Appleyard doesn’t shy away from the RFDS cases that don’t have a happy ending; a still-born baby, a suicide. However she treats these cases with the sensitivity and empathy they deserve.

Anna is back in Broken Hill, a town where she spent her last high school years when her father was principal of the local high school. A town she couldn’t wait to leave and a town she tried hard to forget. She has returned to take up a position in her dream job, flying for the RFDS.
Nick is also back in Broken Hill, he has taken a temporary job as a flight nurse, leaving his troubles behind him in Sydney. He plans to work for a few month a and help get his mother back on track with her health and housing needs. Even though Anna doesn’t remember Nick he remembers her, his old high school crush, and his feelings haven’t abated with age, they have only become stronger.

I really enjoyed this budding romance between Anna and Nick. There were a few misunderstandings and hidden secrets to keep the relationship interesting and unpredictable. The anguish level was just right for me (I’m not one for angst ridden, hand wringing romances). Anna was a strong female role, she was a pilot, a male dominated occupation, and she rocked her job. She was fiercely independent, as she had to look after herself from a young age, and had trust issues. It was nice to see how Nick handled this with patience.
Nick also had a lot going on in his life, a recalcitrant mother, a wayward brother, a failed marriage and a house to sell in Sydney.

Home At Last delivered everything I look for in an outback romance; warmth, tragedy, heartbreak, acceptance and forgiveness.

Appleyard has been firmly placed on my ‘must read’ list.

Can someone tell me where I can find a flight nurse called Nick? Who is the kindest, most persistent, patient man there is? Asking for a friend..

Home at last is about Anna and Nick. Anna is a pilot while Nick is a flight nurse. They both have feelings for each other and Nick makes it very clear that he is interested in her. But Anna has been scarred since an experience as a teenager and she doesn't know if she can trust him. Anyway she is back in Broken hill after 15 years and she really misses her teenage daughter Izzy (short for Isabelle). During this time Anna is living with Beth, a flatmate who is becoming a friend to her. Meanwhile she tries to keep her distance from Nick but she is drawn to him. Anna is shocked when she finds out that Nick is married, however he is very quick to reassure her that he's separated from his wife, Lauren. Anna still has reservations but she can't deny her feelings for Nick, however much she wants to. They sleep together a few times and eventually they start a relationship. But she hasn't told him about her daughter, despite the opportunities that she has had to do so. Just when she decides that she is going to do it, Nick leaves Broken Hill and goes to Sydney to renovate his there, the one that he still owns with his soon to be ex-wife, Lauren. He says that he will come back but Anna doesn't believe him. Will she be able to tell him about Izzy and her feelings for him before it's too late? I really enjoyed this book, even though I enjoyed the first half a lot more than the second half. It just got a bit boring after that and it felt like everything and nothing was happening at once. And of course Anna frustrated me in how many times she wouldn't tell Nick about her daughter. But I really enjoyed their romance and watching Anna develop a close bond with Marlene, Nick's mother who is homeless for most of the book (which is much to Nick's annoyance-that's she's homeless I mean). I wish we could have seen more of Anna's sister Theresa and of Izzy, but this book was really good. And of course I loved that Anna and Nick got a HEA.

This is my first book by Meredith Appleyard despite having one or two on my bookshelf. I was struggling to stick with a book when I picked this up, and thankfully it was a great decision because I couldn't put it down.

Set in Broken Hill, an outback town I've only seen or heard of in books and movies, it's nevertheless a place I can easily imagine especially after living in the WA Pilbara for a while.

Home at last is a story of new beginnings, new opportunities, new friends and relationships, about not letting the past dictate our future, taking responsibility for it but not letting it define us. It is also a story about secrets and who really benefits from keeping them.

I really enjoyed this book, Meredith did a great job of giving me a glimpse into the life of the people who work in the RFDS and the good and bad that they can experience everytime they are called out to a new patient. Anna is a pilot and her love for her new job and its challenges is clear, though it's not always an easy job. Nick is the flight nurse, who does an incredible job and has given me a new appreciation for the job these nurses and doctors do with very little support.

I really loved Nick's character, and I thought the way he knew what he wanted when it came to Anna and the way he wouldn't give up was lovely. I enjoyed Anna's character, I thought the choices she'd had to make as a single mum were hard ones, but she made them for the right reasons. I didn't get however why she was so secretive about being a single mum, I started to get a little annoyed at her for this, especially when it came to Nick. Anna's daughter Izzy was an interesting teenager and the relationship between them and Anna's sister Teresa was definitely a supportive one, both were very lucky that Teresa was so willing to help with the responsibilities of caring for Izzy, something many other single mum's wouldn't have as part of their support system.

This story also highlighted some important matters, such as mental health, especially of those living in remote places, and the lack of close by support.

Another aspect was that of homelessness, especially in women over 50, which is becoming one of the biggest groups of people currently finding themselves homeless. Nick's mother Marlene was quite a character and her homeless status was part of her own making and the lifestyle choices she'd made. It was interesting though to hear why she now said she chose to live in her car rather than go into a home and lose her independence. I loved how Anna formed a relationship with Marlene and the benefits each got from that relationship as the story developed.

I began to wonder as I neared the end if the story was going to have the happy ending I wanted it to have, there were so many secrets, misunderstandings and issues still to work through, part of me was afraid to keep reading, I do love a happy ending.

A really enjoyable read with some great characters, I will definitely look at getting my other Meredith Appleyard books read after enjoying this one so much.

Thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Australia for providing me a digital copy to review.

I chose to read this book because I've always had a fascination with the Flying Doctor Service in Australia. I think it goes back to the years of radio when when there'd be stories that involved this incredible service.

Anna comes back to Broken Hill as a pilot for the FDS. I loved that gender roles were reversed in this novel. Anna is a very competent pilot, has had a challenging life but always seems to make something work. She meets up with one of the FDS nurses - Nick and a relationship develops. However for both of them there are issues especially that of trust that makes things rough going for awhile. Nick has his own baggage and it all takes some time to be worked out.

The flying doctor service aspect did not disappoint, the author's own experience of nursing with the FDS made for very authentic situations. I loved the Australian rural setting, a couple of the minor characters added some fizz to the plot. The story deals with issues of parenthood, ageing parents, having work that is satisfying and of course working out a relationship. A good read.

I have had this book sitting on my TBR pile for over a year now and I am sorry I didn’t read it earlier, it is my first Meredith Appleyard book but it won’t be the last, she has taken me on a journey of opening hearts, finding love and letting go of the past and looking to the future as Anna and Nick find the joy that love can give.

Anna Kelly always dreamed of being a pilot and while living in Broken Hill in her last years of high school Anna started having flying lessons, but her trainer also taught her a lot more than flying, she became a single mother struggled but did finished those lessons and became a pilot, her and her daughter are doing well and now Anna is back in Broken Hill and flying for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and loving it, but she is not looking for love or a man in her life but Nick Harrison one of the nurses seems to be pulling her in a different direction.

Nick is back in Broken Hill and working for few months on contract as a nurse with the RFDS things have been hard for Nick over the last couple of years and he is doing his best to move on and when he sees that one of the pilots is Anna who he was in high school with his teenage dreams of Anna are pushing him towards her now, in his eyes she is still beautiful but a bit more aloof these days, but he is determined to get to know her better this time.

There is a lot going on the lives of both Anna and Nick and at times I could have yelled at them both, but the sensual pull is always there, but there is a lot more to a relationship than sex and it took both of them a while before they finally opened up. MS Appleyard pulled me into this one so much, it is moving, emotional and a sensual journey, I felt the pain of Anna and Nick and then the pure joy, this is one that I thoroughly enjoyed and I highly recommend.

An engaging and heartwarming rural medical romance is what you will discover with this book. It is an enjoyable women's fiction tale, with themes of general living, family, friendships, romances, life choices and the challenges of living in a small rural town. I especially appreciated witnessing the life of a shift worker and the challenges that ensue.

This story also highlighted a number of important issues such as mental health, especially when associated with remote and isolated living situations; aged care and assisting aging parents; homelessness for a range of ages - adolescent boarding school to medical shift workers, to estranged marriages, to aged care - important issues that I felt were dealt with in an appropriate and enlightening way.

At its heart, however, this is a medical rural romance, set in and around Broken Hill (NSW - Australia) with the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). It was above average as far as romance goes but, at times, was a little repetitive and prolonged in sorting out the relevant issues for both major parties. What I did appreciate and wish was investigated further, was the gender role reversal of a male nurse and female pilot - I wish more had been attributed to this significant aspect. The plot is simple but engaging with regards to the various relationships and there are some good secondary characters.

The highlight of this book would have to be the fascinating insights into RFDS culture and traveling the vast regions of the Australian landscape. I understood but never really appreciated the difficulties of not only dealing with providing medical assistance to remote areas, but also the pressure it brings to those who provide such services eg. insufficient staffing, long shifts and available expertise. The cases themselves are dealt with in realistic ways, that bring about true empathy for all involved.

If learning of such true to life situations appeals to you, then I recommend you go on a journey to the heart of Australia and discover how life is for the teams who provide such valuable services.

Anna Kelly once left Broken Hill pregnant and heartbroken. Since then, she's raised her daughter Izzy with the help of her sister, and achieved her dream of becoming a pilot. When she's made redundant of her commercial airline job, Anna grabs the opportunity of working with the RFDS with both hands.

The position brings her back to the place where she thought she'd never set foot again. Still, Anna is not about to give up this ideal position- she's been wanting a challenge for ages. However, the job isn't going to be the only challenge she's going to face. Flight nurse Nick Harrison remembers Anna from high school, and he is quite enamoured with her!

Given that Anna's last relationship ended in disaster leaving her with trust issues, she's reluctant to take a chance with Nick. Besides, her personal life is filled with complications. However, Broken Hill soon feels like home and Anna finds herself getting closer to Nick. Still, she's still unable to open up and reveal that she is a mother- something she feels that will break any potential future they may have.

There's certainly a lot of awkwardness between Anna and Nick here folks. Both of them are carrying so much emotional baggage, that it seems near impossible that a strong foundation will be laid. On one hand, Anna has so many doubts despite her attraction and Nick's only there on a relief position. Is it even worth having a crack at a relationship anyway? The easy solution is to walk away from it all despite the contentment Anna has found in Broken Hill. So when a possible and easy solution is provided, will she grab it with both hands?

I hardly ever read books that focuses on the medical side of things. However when I do, there's constant insightment into the world that our health care workers face every day. From minor incidents to more complex cases and emergencies, we are introduced to the very valuable Royal Flying Doctor Service this time around. Just note, there's quite a bit of gore and mentions of stillbirth and suicide in this particular novel.

Home At Last is a gem of a read, and to date my favourite of Meredith Appleyard's works.

"Home at Last", is a lovely rural romance by Meredith Appleyard. Anna Kelly loves flying, and when she saw the opportunity to fly for the Royal Flying Doctor, she applied and got the job. Anna Kelly moved to Broken Hill away from her friends and family in Adelaide. However, for Anna, the Flight Nurse Nick Harrison was an attraction she did not need. The readers of "Home at Last" will continue to follow Anna and Nick to find out what happens.

"Home at Last" is another enjoyable book by Meredith Appleyard. I enjoy reading books by Meredith Appleyard and the way she portrays living in rural Australian and the social issues that can affect them. I like the ways Meredith portrays her characters and the way they intertwine with each other throughout this book. "Home at Last" is well written and researched by Meredith Appleyard. I like Meredith Appleyard descriptions of the settings of this book.

The readers of "Home at Last" will learn about the problems that the Royal Flying Doctor pilots have when there are mechanical issues with the plane. Also, the readers of "Home at Last" will learn about the problems of alcohol and homelessness in rural communities.

I recommend this book.

I love Meredith Appleyard’s blend of rural and medical fiction with romance. Her stories are always thoughtful and contain a good amount of detail about the medical issues that the characters come up against. Her characters become real under the eyes of the reader and it’s always a disappointment to leave their world. Home at Last is no exception, combining medicine, family, romance and secrets.

The story is set in the real Australian city of Broken Hill. (Despite it officially being a city, it’s more of a big country town with less than 20,000 residents). It’s a place I know and it was great to see some familiar landmarks captured in the story, like the Palace Hotel (featured in the movie Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) and the Living Desert and Sculptures. Despite Broken Hill being ‘big’ in Australian rural town terms, Appleyard captures both the charm and pitfalls of living in a small community through the eyes of Anna. Anna used to live in Broken Hill as a teenager, but what the community failed to notice was that her year there was life changing. Anna has struggled since then, but now her life is about to turn around. She has taken on a job as a pilot for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which balances the technical with the fulfilment of caring for others. Her aim is to get experience and then transfer to a RFDS base closer to home and family. Of course, it doesn’t work out to be as simple as that. Anna starts to make friends in Broken Hill, in particular relief flight nurse Nick. Nick remembers Anna from high school, but has his own baggage which he is upfront about. Anna isn’t quite as upfront, preferring to keep her life to herself. Against her better judgement, Anna and Nick start a relationship but then it’s too late to tell the truth…

I became quite fond of Anna the more I read of Home at Last. I can understand why she wanted to keep her life compartmentalised and private, and we’ve all let that golden opportunity to tell the truth slip by before. In Anna’s case, it blows up to huge proportions and the unfurling was done just right. Anna is also a good person. She cares a lot for the patients she sees and is eager to help out others, such as Nick’s mother who is equal parts frustrating and adorable. Anna is someone just trying to make it in the world without causing too much of a fuss, which is something that I think a lot of readers can relate to. Nick fits into that category too, but unlike Anna he plays his cards openly. He’s happy to reveal to Anna his marriage breakdown, his financial issues and family problems. He’s also pretty sensitive in realising that Anna doesn’t work that way and is pretty darn patient in waiting for her to reveal her cards. Unfortunately, the plot twists just as that is about to happen but not in the way you would expect. The subsequent reunion and happy ending are genuine of the characters and a fitting ending to the story.

The balance of medicine, romance and drama was just right for me. I loved reading about the cases and I was equally invested in Anna’s landlord and friend Beth. (I’m sure there’s a story for Beth somewhere – she’s a wonderful mix of chaos, impulsiveness and moments of clear-headedness). Reading Home at Last was like coming home – comfortable, heartfelt and a fine read.

Thank you to Harlequin for the copy. My review is honest.

Anna Kelly gets a job with the Royal Flying Doctor Service based in Broken Hill, which holds memories for her good and bad. The longer she is there doing the job she loves the more Broken Hill feels happy living there. I enjoyed the insight into how the RFDS works and how everyday there is a new event/crisis to deal with. An enjoyable and interesting romantic story.

An enjoyable tale set in Broken Hill, a major base for the Royal Flying Doctor Service that services remote outback communities & stations. Anna Kelly is a pilot for the RFDS & is enjoying her job there, but she has some unpleasant history in Broken Hill & isn't sure if she'll stay. Her daughter is in boarding school back in Adelaide & Anna miss her fiercely.

Nick Harrison is a Flight Nurse for the RFDS. He has recently returned from Sydney to where he grew up after things went badly with his marriage. Nick would like to stay in Broken Hill but his contract is temporary & he still has ties in Sydney.

Nick is a very likeable character, & his mum Marlene is great. Who wouldn't like to maintain their independence as long as possible? Anna is a strong character but I'm not convinced by her secretiveness about her daughter's existence, it doesn't make sense to me & had me thinking less of Anna, as if she was ashamed of Isabelle. She wasn't, of course, but it doesn't ring true - just a plot point for the "big misunderstanding".

I enjoyed the RFDS & flying scenes, & could have done with more of those. Working in such a male-dominated industry can't have been easy, especially for a single mother, but little was said - I think more might have been done with this.

We never did find out if Rachel had been horseriding so late in her pregnancy & taken a fall. I think this should have been followed up as, otherwise, there's a lingering impression about poor Brett Carmichael. Definitely should have been cleared up.

Anna Kelly loved her job as pilot for the RFDS but deciedes to take a post in Broken Hill her old home town where she lived as teenager when her father had a job posting there. Anna has to leave her 15 year old daughter Issabelle back in Adelaide with her older sister Teresa who she misses terribly. Her daughter attends a boarding school in Adelaide while her sister is on hand to care for her. Anna keeps the secrets of her past to herself and the truth about having a teenage daughter not only from her house mate Beth and Casual Flight Nurse Nick Harrison as she has trust issues with relationships with men.
Nick has a life back in Sydney that he needs to sort out his ex-wife that he is seperated from before he can move on. His Mother Marlene is also issuses as she lives out of her car with no fixed address and medical issues as well for Nick to deal with.
Nick tries to break down the wall that Anna has built around herself to open up to himand trust him so they can build a relationship together.
The author gives us insight to the RDFS and great description of Broken Hill. The characters in the book I like really well there was a sense of community and support for each other. Anna eventually is able to trust Nick and open up about her daughter. Izzy is a normal teenager starting to get an interest in boys.
I thought it was a great rural romance writing by Meredith Appleyard and I couldn0t put it down even read it on the bus to work.

Meredith Appleyard has become one of my favourite authors.
I love the way she portrays small town communities.
This time she’s ventured into Broken Hill and while this story is not so community based, it does show similarities in it’s story line.

Anna Kelly has returned to Broken Hill as a pilot for the Royal Flying Doctor. She was in the town for a short while during her final year of high school and she didn’t count on flight nurse Nick Harrison remembering her. He’s keen to get to know her better, especially as she’s aware of why he’s now back in his home town but she has a few secrets that she wants to keep.
I loved the characters in this book, I felt for Nick as he tried to do his best for his off beat Mum and the way Anna interacted with her. The book also shines a light on how the The Royal Flying Doctors work and cases they may come across, some very harrowing for those involved.
Personally, I felt Anna was a bit silly not telling Nick her ‘secret’ sooner, they both well and truely were old enough for having another life...but I get it’s part of the story. I guess that’s where it didn’t quite hit the 5 star mark for me although I still loved it and the story left me in a good place.
One I would highly recommend.

I’ve found a new favourite author! Home At Last, set in Broken Hill and starring Royal Flying Doctor Service pilot Anna Kelly and nurse Nick Harrison. I’m not absolutely sure what it was about this book but I simply couldn’t put it down. I was so invested in Anna and Nick’s story that I thoroughly resented life’s little intrusions.
This is essentially a story about two ordinary people, each with their own set of worries. They’re not rich or famous but they were very real to me throughout the story. I cared about their financial worries and about whether they were getting enough sleep when one night shift after another had one or other of them nearly dead on their feet.
In addition to Nick and Anna, there were two other people who really touched me. Nick’s mother Marlene is just priceless and grew on me more and more as the story progressed, while Anna’s daughter Izzy really shone as the story began to draw to a close.
The story itself is simple enough, yet the plot was beautifully developed with so much to like and so many little threads to keep me turning the pages. This is one story I will definitely be putting on my keeper shelf.

A lovely easy to read romance novel set in Broken Hill. Not my usual choice of book (my second ever "Rural Romance"). I really enjoyed it.

I loved the role reversal. Anna is a fiercely independent single mother, working as a pilot for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Nick is a nurse with a huge crush on Anna. I loved how Nick was more interested than Anna, and was emotionally involved from early on. Anna was reluctant to let anyone get close to her, even drinks after work with colleagues was to be avoided. With trust issues, a determination not to have any fun whatsoever, and an obsession with keeping all personal information about herself absolutely private, it's not easy for Nick to convince Anna to let him into her life. Even when he gets into her bed, she still wont confide in him.

The RFDS flights out to various properties added drama and were very interesting. Not the usual "boy meets girl" romance. Great supporting characters, a good plot, a very enjoyable read.

An awesome 5 stars! I read this novel from cover to cover in one sitting. The story of a female pilot Anna who is loving her new job working for the Royal Flying Doctor service in her former home town Broken Hill, Outback Australia, while her teenage daughter is in boarding school in Adelaide. Flight nurse Nick has also returned to Broken Hill because of family issues. Needless to say they are attracted to each other but past hurts and trust issues on Anna's part makes going forward difficult.
A sweet developing romance with no graphic sex scenes makes a pleasant change from some books I've read. The prior-to-sex descriptors are very well executed and no further explicit details are needed. I feel this is the mark of an excellent author to portray intimate encounters without describing every single detail.

The varying stories of the cases the RFDS attends builds onto the story well and gives it depth. The descriptions of the Outback and the people take you right to the places described as if you were there.

A very well researched and thought out novel with great characters that I recommend to anyone who loves adventure and romance and the Australian Outback.
Thank you Meredith Appleyard for another great read.

Meredith Appleyard always writes fabulous books that you find hard to put down. This one is no different. It is set in Broken Hill. (Almost Central Australia)Anna is a pilot for the Royal Flying Doctor service. She flies nurses and often doctors to outback stations when help is required. This type of flight is always an emergency. She experiences some happy and traumatic times with these flights. Anna also flies staff on clinic runs. These are too out lying posts and stations where people can visit the doctor, just as city people go to the doctor.
Anna has left a secret in Adelaide. She meets Nick who knew her at school.

This book was a fantastic read with the characters and story line having such depth, grit, and personality.

There was action all the way through about Anna Kelly who landed her dream job as a pilot with the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Broken Hill. This is the place with so many bad memories from her past as a teen, that changed her life forever.

As she settles in to the first 12-months of her post she meets the dashing Nick Harrison whom she works with and things get a little complicated and confusing from there on in.

A must read if you like outback romance! The best book yet by Meredith Appleyard.

Holiday purchase.
Trade paperbacks, new releases in Australia are $16 at Target or Big W, here in New Zealand the cheapest we can get is $29 at the Warehouse!
Plane flight read home, lucky it's 2 flights of around 6 hours.
Memories of the Flying Doctors. Female pilot trying to make ends meet while progressing in a male dominated industry, a few hidden secrets, heartache, an older sister having a change of gender life partner, and an attractive nurse with a homeless mother.
A well crafted read with twists and trauma.

I thought this book had potential but it dragged on for too long for me to rate it any higher than 'ok'. I liked the setting and characters but Anna's stubborness went on for too long and it was hard to like her or even get to know her when she was so closed off to everyone. Her flying was interesting but her withholding a 'secret' from Nick until almost the end of the book was frustrating. It made it hard to believe in the romantic relationship or understand how Nick knew her well enough to love her when she gave him so little.

Home At Last by author Meredith Appleyard is a fabulously entertaining read full of character’s that tug on the heartstrings! A stunning story with equally stunning character’s whom you cannot fault. Anna and Nick are enthralling from start to finish. Home At Last is a book where I would use the term unputdownable reading. A must for your reading lists!

I picked this book up on special . I read the blurb and knowing a cousin worked at Yunta , I’d been to Clare , visited Broken Hill and live in Adelaide I thought I’d give it a go . I thought it wouldn’t be my kind of book ( I really love science fantasy and crime) but once I started reading I was hooked . I love Anna and Nick and very happy about it all . His mum was a card and reminded me of my elderly mother-in-law!

I loved this book. A young pilot for the RDF, a single Mum, living away form her daughter to give her a better life. She just wants to do her job well and not get too involved in the small community, until she has enough money to buy her daughter and herself a home. She falls in love and things change for the better and finds the town of Broken Hill falling in love with her.
