It was a warm day at the end of February, and Sunday morning. In the air there was a smell of spring, mixed with the odours of different animals - yaks, wolves, and musk-oxen, but the two visitors did not notice it. They were lovers, and were having a quarrel.

They came soon to the Wolves and Foxes, and stood still opposite a cage containing an animal very like a dog.

About the author

David Garnett, known as "Bunny", was an English writer and publisher. A prominent member of the Bloomsbury Group, Garnett received literary recognition when his novel Lady into Fox, an allegorical fantasy, was awarded the 1922 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction. He ran a bookshop near the British Museum with Francis Birrell during the 1920s. He also founded (with Francis Meynell) the Nonesuch Press. He wrote the novel Aspects of Love (1955), on which the later Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical was based.

He was the son of Richard Garnett. His first wife was the illustrator and author Ray Garnett (née Marshall) with whom he had two sons including Richard Garnett. His second wife was Angelica Bell. His mother was the translator Constance Garnett.

Een man en een vrouw wandelen door de Londense dierentuin. Voor de dieren hebben ze nauwelijks aandacht, omdat ze ruzie hebben. De emoties lopen zo hoog op dat Josephine Lackett uitroept: ‘Je zou opgesloten moeten worden en tentoongesteld, hier in de dierentuin!’

Ze bedoelde het vast niet zo letterlijk, maar eenmaal thuis schrijft meneer Cromartie een brief aan het bestuur van de dierentuin. Is het niet vreemd, vraagt hij, dat de dierentuin zich laat voorstaan op zijn vrijwel complete verzameling dieren, maar dat er geen mens is opgenomen in de rij mensapen? Hij stelt meteen ook voor om zelf hun collectie compleet te komen maken. Wonder boven wonder gaat de dierentuin akkoord. Meneer Cromartie krijgt een kooi tussen de orang-oetan en de chimpansee en wordt algauw een ware publiekstrekker.

Een man in de dierentuin is een vermakelijke en korte roman uit 1924 over de verschillen én de overeenkomsten tussen mens en dier. Emoties als jaloezie, woede, verlangen, wraak en schaamte passeren de revue – en het zijn niet alleen de mensen die David Garnett emoties toeschrijft. Meneer Cromartie houdt zichzelf voor dat hij niet meer geeft om de wereld van de mens maar ziet de menselijkheid in de dieren van de dierentuin. Of ziet hij zijn eigen dierlijkheid? Dit absurde boek van David Garnett past perfect in de boekenkast naast boeken als Mevrouw Caliban (Rachel Ingalls), Beer (Marian Engel) en - meer hedendaags- Wij zijn met vijf (Mattias Faldbakken) of Ik wil geen hond zijn (Alma Mathijsen). Met uitzondering van de racistische beschrijving van de zwarte man die Cromartie komt vergezellen, doorstaat deze enigszins vergeten klassieker de tand des tijds.

4,5⭐️ Ma che geniale è la mente di Garnett? Un libro da leggere assolutamente, vi farà pensare ma anche sorridere.

Again a amazing weird story of David Garnett. The books of him that I have were very unusual, but told in very easy way. Very charming and original. Subject matter is very typical.

Not as good as Lady into Fox, but still had some nice moments for sure. Love that the whole story wouldn't have happened if the zoo council didn't really hate that one guy and was looking for an excuse to fight him.

Ein kleines feines (mitunter auch ein wenig böse) Buch über einen Beziehungungsstreit. Im Fortgang der Handlung lässt sich der männliche Part des Streitpaares im Zoo ausstellen - korrekterweise im Affenhaus. Geliebte besucht ihn auch dort und der Streit findet auch hier seine Fortsetzung. Der Eingesperrte freundet sich mit Tieren an - nur nicht mit seinen eifersüchtigen Käfignachbarn. Dabei kommt es sogar zu einer folgenschweren Attacke durch das käfigbenachbarte Orang-Utan-Weibchen. Die Story ist skurril aber wiederum in Garnetts wunderbarer Sprache verfasst - das geht meiner Lesekehle hinunter wie selten etwas - leider aber viel zu kurz. Vergnüglich.

Zu Zeiten von "Big Brother" bietet dieses Buch vielleicht keinen revolutionären Plot mehr, punktet aber umso mehr mit seinem Humor. Eine unterhaltsame Geschichte, die in leichfüssiger Sprache erzählt wird.

Often paired with his "Lady Into Fox", this minor Bloomsbury Group member has me reading some short books from the pre-WWII era on the relationship between humans and animals. Or, in this case, humans as animals.
This reads like something that would be assigned in the first couple of years of high school for discussion.
Nice idea, to put a man on display in the zoo.
The love story (kind of confusing and misogynist) gets in the way. As does Garnett's not unusual for the time racism (the zoo board decides to add some other humans to the display - actually this was done with "exotic" individuals from Africa and other non-Western locals more often than we hear about).
2 = It Was OK. Nice idea, not developed to much depth, and spoiled by attitudes of the period.

Een man biedt zichzelf als exemplaar van de menselijke soort aan bij de Londense zoo. Een ietwat overtrokken reactie op een ruzie met zijn liefje waarbij ze hem ‘baviaan’ en ‘missing link’ noemde. Het relaas van het gekooide leven tussen de andere apen wordt afgewisseld met het wedervaren van de onthutste vrouw, die hem nu en dan komt bezoeken. De recent herontdekte Britse schrijver David Garnett leverde met ‘Een man in de dierentuin’ (1924) een schalkse fabel af, helaas niet even gebald als zijn fabuleuze voorganger ‘Vrouw of vos’.

Hoewel de eindbeschouwing in het boek het boek het vooral heeft over de vergelijking van gevoelens tussen mens en dier ervaar ik het vooral al een verhaal over een compromis tussen 2 geliefden die zich afspeelt tussen de dieren. Leest relatief vlot. Ik miste toch wat meer diepgang in de verstandhouding tussen de geliefden. Misschien omdat het zich afspeelt in het begin van de 20ste eeuw en de sociale omgangsvormen ondertussen zo veranderd zijn dat ze niet meer helemaal tot hun recht komen voor lezers die niet vertrouwd zijn met de sociale etiquette van toen.

De mens is ook maar gewoon een dier. Dat is zo ongeveer de strekking van 'Een man in de dierentuin' van David Garnett. Over een man die zich - na een ruzie met zijn geliefde - laat opsluiten in het apenhuis van de Londense Zoo. Zo ontstaat een mooie perspectiefwisseling: de dieren en het bezoekende publiek. De liefdesgeschiedenis die aan het boek ten grondslag ligt is wat gedateerd romantisch (1e druk 1924) en het haalt het niet bij zijn meest bekende boek 'Vrouw of vos', maar toch al met al een intrigerend verhaal.

Na het lezen van het boek 'Vrouw of Os' van Garnett, was ik nieuwsgierig naar dit boek wat hij daarna had geschreven.

Ook dit boek is werkelijk zeer fraai. Een stelletje krijgt ruzie in een Engelse dierentuin waarop de vrouw de man toebijt dat hij maar in een kooi naast de mensapen moet gaan wonen. De man vat deze opmerking letterlijk op, en laat zich in overleg met de dierentuin, tentoonstellen in en kooi in het apenverblijf.

Een absurdistisch liefdesverhaal en wederom een aanrader van Garnett.

Ein sehr kluges Buch, das zeigt, wie besessen Mr Cromartie mit der Idee war, alle hassen zu müssen, um Josephine zu lieben und dann ironischerweise so viel Zuneigung zu den Tieren entwickelt, was ihn dazu bewegt, Josephine eine zweite Chance zu geben und sie wieder neu lieben lernt.
Josephine hingegen lernte, alles im Leben zu hassen, da sie von ihrer Liebe des Lebens getrennt wurde und ihr dies durch den Hass erst richtig bewusst wurde.

Der arme Karakel, den hätte man ja wenigstens gebührend würdigen können.

Zusammenfassend kann man nur darüber schmunzeln, dass schon zu so einer Zeit ein Buch mit diesem Aspekt der freiwilligen Gefangenschaft im Zoo geschrieben wurde. Doch leider ging es wohl damals nur um den Situationszustand und nie um de Situation an sich. So bleibt es doch eine unscheinbare Liebesgeschichte mit Hang zur Selbstkasteiung.

Novella length story about a man who, after a fight with his girlfriend, decides to become an exhibit at the local zoo. Some mild satire here but not a lot of substance overall. Lady into Fox is a much better effort.

Dit is een kort boek met een origineel en leuk uitgangspunt. Toch kostte het me redelijk wat moeite om het uit te lezen en bleef ik me altijd bewust van het aantal pagina's dat resteerde tot het einde. Ik vond de verhaallijn net iets te eentonig.
