This is the kind of book that pulls at the heartstrings. It is a faith based romance novel but lessons taught and learned here are for everyone. Both, Faith and Rick suffered through years of believing an untruth. They both felt betrayed by the other. Rick was sure Faith blamed him for an intimacy that went too far the night before he was to be shipped out to war. He was sure she wanted nothing to do with him. However, Faith was certain Rick abandoned her and their unborn daughter, Rachel.
Rick was putting his life on the line daily in Afghanistan fighting a war. He loves Faith, misses her desperately and feels guilty for their indiscretion. He writes her, telling her he loves her and is sorry for what happened. He asks her to marry him ... but he never hears back from her.
Faith received Rick’s letter and replied immediately with a big YES. She also told him she was pregnant. She never heard back from him. She believed the worst, thinking he abandoned them. But the truth was that Rick never received Faith’s reply. Her letter was lost somewhere between the U.S. and Afghanistan.
Jumping to hasty conclusions led to 26 years of suffering. They loved each other but obviously didn’t trust each other. If they had, they wouldn’t have allowed one unanswered letter produce so much pain and grief. Rick was teased by his military buddies that he was a wuss to keep waiting for a girl’s letter. Faith told herself to toughen up and forget about Rick, that he didn’t care and she had a baby to provide for and protect. Both messed up …. big time.
One Christmas morning, Rick gets the surprise of his life. He gets an email from a DNA data base saying he has a daughter. Herein starts a roller coaster of events. Feelings run high, emotions are pivotal and somehow, some way the truth will bubble to the surface. There will be misunderstandings, angst and self-righteousness. But as the Good Book says, all things work together for those who love the Lord. Beliefs that once were forsaken, now are needed to make right all the wrongs that Faith and Rick fostered. It’s not an easy path to follow but it’s a journey worth taking.
