Una bambina da non frequentare
«Quando sarò grande cambierò tutto» proclama in uno dei suoi furenti monologhi la piccola peste protagonista di questo romanzo. Sono troppe le cose degli adulti che non le vanno a genio: inutili cattiverie, evidenti bugie, imperdonabili meschinità. Eppure il mondo potrebbe essere così divertente, a volerlo cogliere di sorpresa. Ad esempio battendosi con un denutrito orso del circo, o scrivendo all'imperatore per dirgli che «la guerra è durata già abbastanza ed è una vera porcheria». Imprese impareggiabili tra fioretti e misfatti, che costano a questa «bambina da non frequentare» esasperate ramanzine ma che segnano anche le tappe esemplari di un lungo addio all'infanzia. In questo effervescente romanzo, Keun lascia libere le briglie del suo estro comico, dando vita a una creatura adorabile, sfrontata e ribelle, che non ha paura di sfidare le convenzioni della società né di assaggiare i primi frutti, ancora molto acerbi, dell'amore. Un personaggio memorabile - un po' Gian Burrasca, un po' Huck Finn, un po' Zazie - che dalle strade della Colonia del 1918 continua a insegnarci quanto può essere esilarante imparare a vivere.

28 books148 followersIrmgard Keun (1905 – 1982) was a German novelist. She is noted for her portrayals of the life of women in the Weimar Republic as well as the early years of the Nazi Germany era. She was born into an affluent family and was given the autonomy to explore her passions. After her attempts at acting ended at the age of 16, Keun began working as a writer after years of working in Hamburg and Greifswald. Her books were eventually banned by Nazi authorities but gained recognition during the final years of her life.

The world as seen through the eyes of a wild girl who (maybe rightly) thinks grown-ups are the most irrational beings imaginable: better than any satire!
Irmgard Keun is defiantly showing a world where girls are strong and play on equal terms with their male friends, where children oppose parental authority and think for themselves, where curiosity and exploration come first, consequences later, if at all.
The valiant knight of this picaresque story set in Köln during the First World War (and written under the ominous threat of the second in 1935/36) is a child who just can't stick to the sometimes bizarre rules of the grown-up world and has to do what her heart and mind tell her to try. She is so full of ideas and energy that no punishment can prevent the next catastrophe from occurring.
No wonder Nazi Germany was not keen on Keun: her sense of humour must have scared them senseless. What if every citizen had been as brutally individualistic as her main character? There would have been no obedience at all! And no mothers who would be willing to sacrifice their children to the abstract honour of nationalist pride. And no housewives. And no glorification of group think.
By now, reading my fourth Keun, I can vividly imagine why she got into trouble wherever she went. She simply could not hide her sparkling independence.

This German novel from the 30s is set near the end of world war 1, from the perspective of a 10 year old girl. It's not a war novel but rather describes the girl's rebellious nature and her being disciplined by her frustrated parents because she keeps being "boyish" and misbehaves. The novel's strength lies in the voice - it's really hard to write a realistically sounding child and Keun manages this feat easily. Of course I don't know what German children at the beginning of last century truly sounded like, but it felt authentic.
The book is humerous and emotional in turns, but it didn't move me like Keun's "After Midnight", but I don't think it was meant to, either. According to wikipedia this is a children's novel, according to me mother - who gave me this novel as her mother in turned loved the book - it's not. I'm unsure who the intended audience was. Maybe this is another case of 'it's written from a child's perspective, so it's clearly meant to be read by children'.

Ein Mädchen, das eigentlich nur Spaß haben und schöne Dinge tun will, aber mit ihren Eskapaden und Streichen in den Augen der Großen einfach immer nur alles kaputt macht. Boys will be boys würde man über "schwierige" Jungen so sagen, für Mädchen gelten dann aber doch wieder ganz andere Regeln.
Wunderbar erzählt Irmgard Keun wie Kinder nicht ernstgenommen werden und ihnen oft nicht zugehört wird, während Erwachsene mit ihrer Doppelmoral ziemlich willkürliche Lektionen und Strafen für sie erfinden.

In quanti pasticci può cacciarsi una bambina di soli dieci anni, quante avventure si nascondono per lei dietro ogni angolo pronte per essere vissute? In “Una bambina da non frequentare” Irmgard Keun si cala perfettamente nei panni della sua protagonista, trasformando ogni capitolo in un monologo forsennato, irato e divertente; monologhi che si scagliano contro gli adulti, contro le ingiustizie della vita, contro le regole che sono tanto facili da dimenticare quanto da infrangere.
La prova scrittoria di Irmgard Keun non è solo un’immersione riuscita nel mondo dell’infanzia, il cui ricordo è sempre così appannato e lontano quando si diventa adulti, bensì un inno alla libertà, alla lotta rabbiosa e vigorosa che agita le nostre anime per liberarci delle imposizioni della società, delle briglie che siamo costretti ad indossare ogni giorno per convincere noi stessi e gli altri che apparteniamo davvero al mondo nel quale siamo immersi.

I read this book in English, not German. Before the rise of feminism, Irmgard Keun writes of a protagonist who had a child out of wedlock, believed in women's self-determination and career. You must read this, it's "One of Us" in English. This book was banned by the Nazis because she had the protagonist say that she didn't like the movement.

Дитяча класика "Дівчинка, з якою дітям не дозволяли дружити" німкені Ірмґард Койн — це моя друга книга в рамках Women in Translation Month.
Ця книжечка мене добряче збила з пантелику. Від творіння з такою назвою я очікувала веселої оповіді про витівки і бешкети маленької шибайголови, і великим чином книга саме про це. Ну, і я собі, нічого не підозрюючи, спокійненько читаю, підсміюючись і тихо співчуваючи батьками цього чортеняти, аж тут, як сніг на голову в п'ятому розділі виявляється, що дія відбувається під час Першої світової, і на бідолашних непідготованих читачів просто вивергають усі ті ознаки часу. Наприклад, нестача найнеобхідніших продуктів — сім'я нашої героїні вирушає в село, щоб нелегально виміняти в когось натуральної їжі, і потім мама ховає яйця під одягом, а наша дівчинка — слоїк з медом за пазухою, бо, вочевидь, це вважалося контрабандою? Або що "старий, йому щонайменше сорок років" сусід пан Клайнерц, з яким приятелює наша дівчинка, втратив на війні руку. І от ця тотальна бідність, купа поранених у шпиталі, постійні фінансові проблеми в батьків, а в наступних розділах, ніби нічого й не сталося, знову витівки і бешкети. Отака-от нерівна історія. А ще головна героїня чомусь не має імені, це дивує вже з перших розділів.
"Мені страшенно хочеться бути неймовірно сильною. Іноді я уявляю собі, що тоді було б. Я могла б розкидувати по горах кам'яні брили, легко однією рукою переносити тата з кімнати в кімнату, виламати тюремні двері, боротися на вулиці відразу з тридцятьма дітьми, в місті їздити верхи на тиграх і левах, кидатися навпроти автомашин і на повному ходу зупиняти їх, сама, без маминої допомоги, підіймати на плиту виварку з білизною."

UNGHIE SPORCHE E AVVENTURE 🌸
❓Avete mai acquistato un libro lasciandovi guidare dall’istinto? Magari entrando in libreria e afferrando il libro che, senza informazioni a riguardo, più vi ispirava?
👉🏻 A me è successo con Una bambina da non frequentare, la storia di un’undicenne che ne combina una più del diavolo, ma non perché sia una peste, né perché voglia farsi vedere, ma perché è fatta così: ha mille idee, mille amici, mille certezze sulla vita (come quella che gli adulti siano un po’ bugiardi) e non può fare a meno di esternarle.
🌸 Quanto ho riso, leggendo questo libro. Ho riso perché l’autrice riesce perfettamente a trasmettere cosa significhi avere undici anni, e perché quello che racconta, lungi dall’annoiare, ha una voce unica, frizzante, magistralmente bambina.
👉🏻 Ho riso quando regala ai soldati (siamo a Colonia alla fine del primo conflitto mondiale) i lenzuoli del fratello malato di scarlattina, ho riso quando prende un salame e se lo lega in vita per fingersi adulta. Ho riso per il suo rapporto con la scuola, per le ramanzine dei genitori, per la burbera zia Millie. E poi mi sono sorpresa: un libro scritto benissimo, con una protagonista ribelle, fantasiosa e intelligente davvero memorabile.
🌸 Irmgard Keun, poi, non è mica una scrittrice sconosciuta: in Germania è nota per il suo estro comico, e anche per la vita condivisa con Joseph Roth (sì, quel Joseph Roth). Insomma: per me è la scoperta del mese. Questo significa forse che devo lasciarmi guidare dal fiuto? Io dico di sì! 🤣
❓ Rinnovo la mia domanda: come scegliete i libri da comprare? Ci arrivate già con le idee chiare, in libreria, o vi lasciate guidare dal colore della copertina, dalla quarta, dal titolo o da chissà quale altro parametro?

Irmgard Keun kreiert glaubwürdige die Stimme eines rebellischen Mädchens, das uns von seinen ‚Untaten‘ berichtet. Sehr humorvoll führt uns das Kind, das die Regeln der Erwachsenen nicht nachvollziehen kann und will, vor Augen wie absurd und spaßfeindlich ebendiese sind - wobei es auch unter den Erwachsenen mitverschworene Ausnahmen gibt. Manchmal getrieben von einer destruktiven Kraft, oft von Neugierde und Lust am Spiel, beizeiten vom Hunger der Familie oder dem Wunsch nach Gerechtigkeit, eckt die ‚unartige’ Ich-Erzählerin immer wieder an und stellt mit ihrer ganzen Person einen starken Kontrast zu stereotypen Vorstellungen von Mädchen (nicht nur) um 1918 dar.
Die einzelnen Kapitel sind sehr lose verbunden und könnten unabhängig voneinander gelesen werden, weil die Figuren immer wieder neu eingeführt werden. So ist auch das Ende recht abrupt.
Eine leichte, lustvolle Lektüre - lieb die Protagonistin.
Weshalb die Neuauflage aus 2023 von Ullstein davon absieht rassistische Begriffe wie das N-Wort kritisch zu kontextualiseren, leuchtet mir absolut nicht ein. Enttäuschendes Versäumnis.

Moest dit lezen voor kinder- en jeugdliteratuur en het is oorspronkelijk in 1936 als jeugdboek gepubliceerd maar wat een boek!! De verteller is een 10- jarig meisje met veel energie en fantasie maar met het ongeluk dat ze als meisje geboren is, waardoor haar wilde gedrag niet geaccepteerd wordt. Ze snapt volwassenen ook niet omdat zij continue hun mening veranderen over WOI en koud zijn geworden door de tijdsgeest en de ontbering die ze meegemaakt hebben. Keun praat het meisje haar gedrag zeker niet goed maar toont hoe verwarrend en chaotisch het moet geweest zijn om op te groeien tijdens WOI en hoe kinderen door avontuur en fantasie toch aan de ellende konden ontsnappen, ook al werd dat hen niet in dank afgenomen door volwassenen. Er is ook een subtekst. Het gedrag van de personages spiegelt namelijk de houding van de Duitsers in WOI en het begin van het interbellum. Die subtekst is zooo grappig en tragisch tegelijkertijd omdat het hoofdpersonage, zonder dat ze het zelf beseft altijd naar WOI verwijst, wat natuurlijk ook aantoont hoe vatbaar kinderen voor propaganda zijn

Ironico, dolce, ingenuo arguto. I vari capitoli affrontano non tanto la crescita di questa bambina da non frequentare, tanto le sue varie avventure incastonate alla perfezione nel quadro storico del 1918, dalla vaga menzione degli anelli delle donne raccolti e fusi per sfornare nuove armi agli inglesi che, vinta la guerra, si stanziarono in territorio tedesco. È il terzo libro della Keun che leggo, e ogni volta è un viaggio tutto particolare e a se stante.

Nicht so gut wie "Das kusntseidene Mädchen", aber da sind die Ansprüche auch hoch. Trotzdem fabelhaft rabaukiges Buch, über eine Kleine, die macht was sie will mit guten Vorsätzen und Moral und einem eigenen, kindlichen (?) Blick auf die Welt. Würde es meinen Kindern zum Lesen geben, damit sie sich am zivilien Ungehorsam üben tun.

Che spasso questa bambina a da non frequentare, ma che onestamente io frequenterei, anche solo per avere la certezza di non annoiarmi mai.
Ho acquistato questo libro senza sapere nulla della scrittrice, né della storia. Ora, ne sono certa, leggerò altro di lei. Una penna assolutamente sagace e brillante, divertente, ma sempre capace di sottolineare le storture del tempo in cui scrive (la Germania a cavallo tra il primo dopoguerra e la seconda guerra mondiale).
Mi ha ricordato molto Pippi Calzelunghe, ma con i piedi un po' più per terra!

In Una bambina da non frequentare una ragazzina pestifera racconta in prima persona, senza peli sulla lingua e mettendo tutto in discussione la vita a Colonia cent’anni fa. In sostanza: Bianca Pitzorno incontra Huckleberry Finn in tempi di guerra.
È un libro spassoso che non manca di profondità, una lettura che consiglio a 360 gradi e che mi sorprende non avere a oggi neanche una recensione italiana qui su Goodreads.

Papà ha sospirato profondamente e ha detto che avrebbe preferito leggermi le fiabe. Ma io conosco a memoria quasi tutte le storie. All'inizio gli uomini sono sempre cattivi e malvagi, poi si nobilitano e diventano migliori grazie all'arrivo di un qualche bell'animaletto. Apprezzerei di più se l'uomo restasse cattivo e quindi l'animaletto gli staccasse la testa con un morso.

Keeruline on öelda, kellele see eelkõige suunatud on. Peategelane on 11-aastane, nii et kindlasti sobib ka lastele. Tean, et mitmed on seda lugenud (hilis)teismelisena ning nautinud. Ka mina, täiskasvanud mees, leidsin selle väga hea olevat. Ning olen üsna kindel, et kui seda oma nelja aastasele tütrele ette loeksin, meeldiks see ka talle.
Kirjutamisstiil on kaasahaarav ja hoogne ning midagi leiab raamatust ilmselt igaüks.

Дочитав эту книгу, внезапно поймала себя на мысли, что не вполне уверена, стоит ли безоговорочно определять её как "детскую". Все ли книги, где главные герои - дети, можно считать предназначенными для детей? Впрочем, прочитай я "Девочку, с которой детям не разрешали водиться" в юном возрасте, она бы мне наверняка понравилась, но не уверена, что на тот момент я бы восприняла её так, как сейчас. Потому что по факту испытала смешанные чувства. С одной стороны, да, здесь много забавных, смешных моментов, причём это есть не только в описываемых событиях, но и в форме подачи - читая, по-настоящему веришь, что герой-нарратор действительно маленькая девочка, стиль выдержан на 100%. А с другой стороны, если вдуматься, неизбежно приходишь к мысли о том, какая же по сути главная героиня несчастная девочка. И одинокая. Это сквозит между строк практически постоянно, хотя казалось бы - у неё есть семья, есть друзья-ровесники, и всё равно голос её звучит как-то немного печально. Про друзей, впрочем, не скажу ничего плохого, вроде бы дети как дети, но вот семья, если вдуматься, слегка шокирует, потому что впечатление такое, будто родителям до дочери вообще нет дела. Что бы ни случилось, они только констатируют, что дочь у них плохая, невоспитанная хулиганка, но ничего, уж младший-то ребёнок точно вырастет достойным членом общества. А между тем, подозреваю, девочке просто не хватало внимания. И родительской любви, думается, тоже. И из-за всего этого после всех рассказанных главной героиней (что характерно, имя её в тексте не упоминается ни разу, что тоже как бы намекает: можно представить, что на неё всем до такой степени наплевать, что даже имени у неё как бы и нет) вроде бы забавных историй послевкусие остаётся слегка горьковатое.
Но, кстати, вот почему и стоит взрослым иногда читать детские книги: вот так разглядишь в простенькой, казалось бы, истории двойное дно и в нужный момент сам задумаешься о собственном поведении и о том, как ты относишься к окружающим и что из этого получается.

Eine unbenannte Drittkläßlerin lebt zum Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs in Köln und macht unsicher, was nur geht. Sie ist das, was man bei einem Jungen als Lausbub bezeichnen würde, also ein Kind, das nichts als Unsinn im Kopf hat und ihren Eltern ziemlich viel Kopfzerbrechen bereitet. Dabei ist die Kleine von absoluter Ehrlichkeit - sie weiß, wenn sie Blödsinn macht und beschönigt ihn nicht vor sich selbst. Im Kontrast dazu sieht sie auch die Alltagslügen, mit denen Erwachsene sich umgeben, ebenfalls mit äußerster Klarheit und Unverständnis.
Der Roman behandelt keinen großen, zusammenhängenden Plot, sondern Episoden aus dem Leben des jungen Mädchens, mit einem Epilog einige Jahre später, in dem das Mädchen 13 Jahre und erstmals verliebt ist. Schön, wie die Scheinheiligkeit von Menschen deutlich aufgezeigt wird, und auch, wie gut man dieses Mädchen versteht und ihm wünscht, wenigstens EIN Erwachsener wäre auf ihrer Seite.

Una bambina da non frequentare è un romanzo pungente, ironico e dissacrante, adatto ai ragazzi ma soprattutto agli adulti, che dovrebbero riuscire a cogliere la critica ad alcuni comportamenti in cui talvolta cadono quando si prendono troppo sul serio. Scritto da Irmgard Keun in esilio, a seguito dell'iposizione della censura da parte del regime nazista, è anche un'importante testimonanza del modo di vivere della borghesia tedesca negli anni '20, oltre che di alcuni passaggi storici come la guerra e l'occupazione straniera, un'occasione, dunque, per colmare la curiosità senza pericolo di annoiarsi.

Una grande scoperta. Libro spassoso, originale, scritto benissimo. Fa assaporare in modo credibile la voce in prima persona - cosa assai poco comune - di una bambina fuori dal comune, ingegnosa e ribelle. Ma c’è di più, una trama forse troppo abbozzata ma comunque in evoluzione, che fa luce sulla crescita della protagonista. Molto consigliato.

Die eigentliche Zielgruppe ist bereist tot, denn kein 10 Jähriger von heute würde die Sprache und im Buch beschriebenen Freizeitaktivitäten von damals wirklich verstehen.

Another one in my discovery of Keun's books, found in our church library this time. Like in the previous ones, she succeeds admirably in making me feel with a character I'd probably rather dislike in real life.
This time, however, the main character, who shares her experiences with us as a first person narrator, is a child. We never learn her name, but a the beginning of the book (a brief and brisk one, like all of Keun's so far) she is about 8 years old, at the end she is 13. She just talks to us about all the 'terrible' things that happen in her life like a child would, exclusively from her own perspective that she never questions. Glimpses of the outside world are caught in asides and half sentences, but when that happens, it can be all the more poignant for that – the book is set during World War I and a bit after. It is also set in Cologne, so, just like in Keun's previous books, it is fair to say this one is also modelled on her own experiences. (Plus, it's delightful to read of the characters going around real places you are familiar with.)
The girl's voice is completely convincing and even, I felt, changes - 'grows up' - a bit: in the last chapter she is a teenager and her tragedies are slightly different to that of the 8-year-old - and it is suitable the story ends when it does because even though it ends in the middle of the telling, you know that it would turn into a different story soon.
Those childhood years, however, are indeed full of (more or less perceived) 'tragedies', mostly because she appears to be an almost unbelievably awkward child, always getting into scrapes, often from having a, for us, incredibly free range (especially given that she is from a middle class background). At the centre of the book is the contrast between her instincts and natural desires and the expectations of the adult world, which she again and again fails to reconcile. It also appears that she is a child in a world where no one ever tried to talk to children - she tries to make sense of her world as best she can, and if that 'best' is stunningly little, this is not helped by the fact that the adults' response to the world, which they try to inculcate in the children, is basically to always just 'shut up and obey'.
The magic of the book is that not only do you feel with the girl for her misfortunes at the same time that you are amused by them, but you also get a scathing sense of the world of the adults to be both helpless and corrupted and every bit as clueless as the child's.

Kurzweilige Story um ein ungezogenes Mädchen aus dem Köln während und kurz nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg. Da wir die Geschichte aus der Perspektive des Kindes lesen, sehen wir die eindeutig guten Absichten der Kleinen: Sie missversteht die Welt der Eltern und umgekehrt.
Sie essen die Schnecken, sie essen immerzu alles und erzählen Kindern, daß man Schnecken ansingen soll und Osterhasen lieben muß. Ich weiß wirklich nicht, warum sie nicht lieber böse dicke Männer essen, die sie nicht leiden können und die nicht niedlich sind und an denen auch mehr dran ist. — S. 133
Irmgard Keuns Stil ist unverkennbar, unter der flatterhaften Oberfläche gibt es viel zu entdecken. Die eigentliche Geschichte ist eher episodenhaft und das Ende sehr abrupt.
