Yes yes yes!!!! I need volume 15 now! I absolutely loved it! I mean this new story arc is life and the new Soma----oh my gosh! Ya'll if you haven't read this manga you are definitely missing out.
From Iron Chef to Kitchen Nightmares to ... Hell's Kitchen! 😈🍴 Souma is learning all about French cuisine and how to work in a busy restaurant that serves "course" (prix fixe) meals. It's a lot different for him since he's used to cooking different things to order. Also the kitchen runs differently and is encouraged to be efficient and ... quiet. (That's another mark against them from Ramsay - no communication!)
This is a super short arc but it was enjoyable! I think I just wanted something that wasn't the autumn election cooking battles. I like seeing Souma's growth as a chef and the different challenges he's forced to face.
My gosh! Can't get enough.. It's just so exciting! And to think being elite ten is that difficult and pressuring. Like all of those responsibilities are just too heavy for just a student.. Hoping for wonderful things to happen to Souma and Tadokoro. They are just amazing..
World: The art is fine. The world building is good with more information not only on cooking but rather about French cuisine and the dynamics of the meal. There are also pieces here from the past that pop up and it's good.
Story: Solid story about French cuisine that does not focus on the actual cooking. It's good to step out of that cooking mold to do more. The banter is good and the meet and greet maple thing is gonna be interesting.
Characters: Soma goes through a big change this time and I liked that, it kinda reenergized him as a character. The new characters this time around served their purposes and ws okay.
Quick thoughts: Another fun arc of Soma having to adapt to realizing how much he doesn't know, finishing the Stagiaire Challenge story. Soma returns to school more ambitious than ever, and everyone's world is widened by a fateful introduction to the top students in the school. The momentum this series has built and maintained is quite impressive.
I really liked this one! The way Chef Shinomiya runs his kitchen was very interesting and watching Soma learn new techniques was a lot of fun. That ending was also super mysterious, so I’m looking forward to learning what that was about.
This volume has an interesting content as the main focus is about Soma finding his own direction and specialty instead of randomly cooking whatever he wants. He starts to find out his own weaknesses and trying his best to overcome them. He tries to understand his own limitations and searching for a specialty that he can master with it.
Yukihira finally comes face to face with the Elite 10 and immediately asks for a Shokugeki. Then the immense distance between the normal students and the elite 10 is explained to him. Still he keeps his composure. Also the first year top students seems to be burning with fighting spirit after they were made light of by the elite 10. Hopefully the next arc will be a clash between the first years and the elite ten members.
It's fun watching Soma screw up at the beginning of his time at Shino's Tokyo, but then, you know, learn from those mistakes and totally kick ass by his last day there. I just like watching him stay focused and determined and gaining the respect of pretty much everyone around him without ever loosing his friendly attitude. Looking forward to seeing how things progress now that he's finally met (and gotten the brush-off) from the entire Council of Ten!
This installment made me so happy. Once again Soma is challenged but this time he can't rely on his ability to improvise at the last moment to get him through it. Soma takes it upon himself to use this opportunity to learn everything he can. Not only does Soma gain new insight into the importance knowing different techniques but he also gains a drive to make his cooking represent him.
Already saw the stagiaire challenge from the anime, so I'm expecting a greatness. This the best volume of the series so far. It presents the greatest challenge for Yukihira.
Soma continues on to the second week of his stagiaire, where he works under the fearsome Chef Shinomiya that we met earlier during the Hell Camp -- yes, the one who tried to fail Megumi's terrine dish and then ended up in an official shokugeki against Soma and Megumi.
This volume was a little more interesting, though it did suffer from the lack of Soma's interactions with the usual characters we've come to love, just as volume 13 did. However, Chef Shinomiya is charismatic (and apparently quite attractive) enough to make up for the missing sidekick interactions, which gives the story added oomph. Working at the Shino's prix fixe restaurant, which features multiple courses that involve extensive prep time and that must be served one right after another, is a completely different experience from cooking for Soma's family restaurant, so Soma struggles initially. With his usual enthusiasm and thirst for improvement, he shoulders greater responsibility each day and makes great strides in his learning. He also gains exposure to the business end of running a restaurant and sees that he'll have to step up his learning to be equal to to the likes of Shinomiya someday.
(It seems that during the stagiaire, Soma cannot return to his dorm, so he sleeps and showers at the restaurant? What in the world?)
We also gain insight into Shinomiya's own childhood/background and why he decided to specialize in French cuisine. As part of the restaurant's preopening week, he invites some of the other Totsuki alumni we've met previously to dine on the last night, and it feels like a fun reunion to see these characters again.
Soma creates a delicious-sounding risotto-stuffed quail (with a side of poached egg) recipe while working to find his specialty, but sadly this recipe is not included in the volume's extras.
Eventually, Soma and the other students return to Totsuki after their successful stagiaires to learn that they will be meeting the Council of Ten face-to-face. The Council of Ten features an eclectic assortment of characters (aside from the three we already know), who will surely figure extensively in future volumes.
Soma also finds, upon his return to the Polaris dorm, that he's received many shokugeki challenges while he was away. He immediately accepts some of the challenges on the spot, defeating each challenger soundly with his new confidence and the skills he's learned during his stagiaire experiences.
Food Wars: Shokugeki no Sōma!, Vol. 14 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (110–118) of the on-going manga series.
Sōma Yukihira's next stagiaire assignment is working for Kōjiro Shinomiya to open his new branch restaurant in Tokyo, and in order to pass he needs to create something original that will stay with the restaurant. They have a pre-opening event in which they test run their items on the menu.
Sōma falls behind in his first pre-opening day, prompting the other workers to have to pick up the slack. However, the next day he catches up and improves, even getting to complete a dish beyond just prepping. On the final day, Kōjiro invites his former classmates and teachers, as well as his mother.
Kōjiro's chefs then create their own works which have a chance of being added to the menu. Sōma serves a roasted quail poele dish that he considers a chicken and egg rice bowl. Although Kōjiro considers Sōma's dish to be low quality, he makes his version of it to add to the menu, implying that Sōma has passed. As some of the first-years complete their stagiaires, Sōma returns to field a bevy of shokugeki challenges, including one from skewer specialist Tetsuji Kabutoyama.
An event called the Momiji Meet and Greet lets the eight Fall Classic qualifiers to meet the Council members.
This tankōbon is written by Yūto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki. It concludes the stagiaire arc, which was thankfully short compared to the massive Fall Classic arc. Sōma Yukihira and Kōjiro Shinomiya are further explored as the former is serving as a stagiaire for the latter. While Sōma didn't pass with flying colors it shows that Sōma has come a long way, but has further to improve. The tankōbon closes with the Momiji Meet and Greet which allows the top eight Fall Classics qualifiers to meet the Council of Ten Masters, which is the student council consisting of the top ten culinary students of Tōtsuki Saryo Culinary Institute.
All in all, Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Sōma, Vol. 14 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.
Taki staż to Lisiołowi odpowiada!
Soma finishes his internship phase with a spot in the restaurant of a former first seat.
I loved the fact that Soma begins to 'grow up'/develop his own cooking style in this volume. He is exposed to French techniques, the work required to open a restaurant, and working on a line under an elite chef. Soma has always loved cooking, but now he has a happy gleam in his eye as he purposely sets out to learn all he can.
Best cheesy food-porn line in this book: "Layer after delicate layer of flavor... just a lick of the sauce nearly made my knees buckle!" (That's a pretty weak one for these books but better than last volume's goose egg).
This volume started off strong but as it kept going I got more and more disappointed. First we see Soma struggling to keep up in the kitchen! Then we skip to the end of the week and he's caught up with everyone? Then we do a food competition but skip past all the food? Then we skip weeks? Then we skip whole competitions? This manga is brushing over all the visually interesting stuff. Sure it's cool to see Soma learning new styles but did they really have to skip everything just to do it? This is a series called "food wars", I want to see food! It has "shokugeki" in the name, let me see the shokugeki!
This volume was one of the best for showing actual character growth on the part of Soma. We get to see serious culinary creativity, along with someone in a position to reign him in and guide him. That, followed by his willingness to accept cooking challenges for stakes that involve learning more of his craft, makes for a good story. Now it's not just thoughtless cockiness, it's trying to get better every day at the art and craft of being a chef, and that makes the story better.
I'm so here for all the Soma x Shinomiya action! This volume features Soma's stagiaire at Shino's Tokyo, where he gets his first taste of the world of fine dining, and delves into Shinomiya's backstory (you meet his adorable mom!).
This volume really closes the loop on year one at totsuki and opens up the big wide world of upperclassmen and the elite ten, and ends with a leveled-up Soma ready to take on everything and everyone.
