“It’s so well written that you feel like you are watching this story as it’s playing out, which considering the content is quite an emotional, scary and thought provoking ride!!" ~ TotallyBooked Blog

What Colin doesn’t know can’t hurt him.

At least that’s what I tell myself about the secrets I keep. I don’t have a choice, not if I want to keep my daughter safe. And keep him Colin safe too. There are enemies in the shadows waiting to strike from all sides. I’m holding them out with my bare hands, but it’s hard not to get crushed in the process.

And the truth has a way of coming out.

If I’m not careful, the past I’ve been working so hard to hide, the pain I’ve been fighting so long to outrun, will wipe out the man I love.

"At once gritty and tender, stark and hopeful." ~ Cara McKenna, author of Hard Time

Don't bother

All I can say is that this series is a complete ripoff. The first book was free so what the heck right? I bought the second hoping that there be more to it. What you get here is what would amount to be in maybe several chapters of any other novel you would buy. It's almost the same price. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS TOTAL CRAP. I wouldn't have even given it one star if I didn't have to to write down a review. And I do not usually even write reviews. What a letdown.

I admit that I skimmed through the last few chapters, but quite frankly I could not take the BS, Unrealistic Crap and Massive Stupidity any longer.
I can NOT stand Allie.
The story is jumpy.
The various scenes I am suppose to believe are so preposterous I can not 'Swallow' them at ALL.
No emotional nor romantic connection is felt between the two mc's.
I actually feel sorry for Colin, the male mc. If he was real...... No way would this crap go down this way.
Nope.
Never.
No Way!
I give up on this series.

Secrets, blackmail, betrayal, confusion, suspicions, accusations ... and a female making me spit nails! That would be Allie. We know the circumstances in which they met in book #1. We know her "requests" are the same as usually but we find he doesn't carry through with what she wants. So why the hell is she confusing him now?

"Give it to me."
He paused. "What?"
"The way I want it. You know."
I felt his indecision as my breath caught. He didn't want to hurt me, I knew, but he'd want to do as I asked, because he'd fucked up. I didn't even know if I wanted him to say yes or no.

Now I ask... what the h*** is that? It broke his heart when he gave her what she wanted but then times after that she can't make up her mind when he throws some of her "I want"s in! Then he's the one made to feel bad. I don't know about poor Colin but she confuses me as well! So, baby, come to me and I will make it all better ;)

We know that Colin does a lot for his brother Philip, pointing to something illegal it seems. Philip doesn't hide the fact he isn't very fond of Allie. She assumes it's her living arrangements with his brother, he took her in along with a child after all...
Accepting an invitation to Philip's for a dinner, Allie begins doing some snooping in his home and a few surprising discoveries are made.

Stick a fork in me, I was done. Completely, positively, irrevocably in love with him. That too-full feeling closed in on my heart, and my eyes pricked. I turned to face the coat closet just to catch my breath. Oh God, I wanted to keep him."

Whatever Allie. I just don't like this girl and she needs to get her crap together because in this book he buried himself in my heart. Quiet caring man, I love him.

5 Mysterious and Suspenseful Stars

Hard is book 2 in the Chicago Underground novella series

Suspense and more suspense is what we get in book 2 of this series. We get some answers to Allie's traumatic event that occurred when she was a teenager and those answers give us a much better understanding about her character. With that being said those answers bring a lot more questions into the picture. I find Allie's personality much stronger in this book.
At the same time Colin is still a mystery but we learn more about his family. I especially enjoyed watching Allie and Colin's love and acceptance of each other grow throughout the book.

I'm actually happy I don't have to wait for book 3 to come out since I plan to move on and hopefully get some answers. Once again this was a nice easy read and not too dark for those who are wondering.

I highly recommend this series!!

I read all of Alli and Colin's story before I could stop and post this review so this review will be copy and pasted on Rough, Hard, and Fierce. I really like bad boy alpha males. I especially like mob romance stories. The book really didn't confirm that Colin was in the mob but did say something similar but not that organized. Hmmmm not sure what that means. Without giving anything away he is involved in something illegal. Alli has had a rough life and now is a single mother prowling the club for her next rough sex session. That's all men are good for and they never take no for an answer so why say no. She meets Colin but Colin is so different from what she has had in the past. He wants more but she doesn't know if she can risk her heart and that of her 2 year old baby girl.

Alli has a lot of mental issues and Colin has a ton of secrets. The thing about this author is that she cuts to the meat of the story and doesn't give a lot of filler or useless details. That's great most of the time but I would have liked to explore more about Colin. Even at the end it was rushed and I still had questions. That being said I couldn't put the book down even when I was screaming at Alli telling her what an idiot she was.

If you like anti-heroes, criminal type leads, or screwed up heroines this is a great read. Not for the faint of heart because it definitely carries erotic to a new level.

Second installment of the Chicago Underground series and it was as hard to put down as the first book. It grabs you and keeps you entertained from start to finish.

Allie's story continues and she is still struggling to trust Colin. And Colin is still keeping his secrets and feelings closed off from Allie. Will these two be able to find their way? Or will the secrets and lies tear them apart? What stands out in this story is Allie is starting to realize her strength, she starts to grow up and come into her own.

Colin remains mysterious and sexy. But it's his soft side, the one he only shows Allie and Bailey that makes him so endearing. He shows them with actions, not words, how much he cares.

The love scenes are delicious and the angst is palpable. And there are some real laugh out loud moments thanks to baby Bailey. She always knows just what to do to diffuse a volatile situation, by just being a baby!

I'm very intrigued by Colin's siblings, we start to see more from them in this book. They have secrets all their own. Add a corrupt policeman to the mix and this story just takes off and leaves you on the edge of your seat.

Skye Warren is a must read author for me, and she does not disappoint with this series!

Continuation from Rough, so if you haven't read that I suggest doing so before starting this

We get some answers. Life why Allie doesn't like cops, where Shelly went, and why Allie never reported Andrew and the rape. Also a lot of things happen or go down. We get a little reveal, a little spying, and some more dark to this tale.

Colin has some sweet scenes with Allie and Bailey and we get to see a little tarnish on his white-knight armor as well. So like i said lots going on. Recommend reading all parts together for full enjoyment of the story.

This was just 'meh' all the way. There's no connection between the characters, no real storyline that intrigues you and overall just everything is 'meh'!

*** review of the audiobook ***

STORY
In this second installment we finally find out what exactly happened between Allie and Andrew (resulting in Bailey). We also learn what it was that made Allie seek out her monthly, “date nights.” Although the Chicago Underground is still an elusive entity, we do get a few more glimpses of Laramie, Philip and Rose. Like the first installment, this one is also not a complete, “book”.... hopefully, the final installment will put all the pieces together and give us some solid answers.

PERFORMANCE
I listened to the Audible audiobook narrated by Rose Dioro. Ms. Dioro speaks with such a soft, feathery voice that at times it was practically a whisper, literally lowering so much in volume that I could not hear what she was saying. She does puts on a performance, not just reading from a script, yet with more experience and perhaps some acting lessons, her performance could definitely improve. I appreciated her trying to alter her voice to differentiate between characters but some of the voices she used, especially for the male characters, were comical! I won’t avoid listening to audiobooks by Ms. Dioro but I won’t actively seek them out either.

Not as dramatic and suspenseful as the first story but still a quality read. The trust that’s building between the H and h is incredible! But there’s certainly an underlying sense of worry that it’s all built on lies and deceit. Allie starts to second guess things and prove she’s not a total docile pawn. I loved seeing her true strength in this book!

A DARK,TWISTY STORY OF LOVE AND SALVATION

In this gritty second installment in Skye Warren’s Chicago Underground series, HARD picks up right where ROUGH left off. After the cliffhanger ending of the first novella, which left our 19 year-old heroine in the midst of an emotional breakdown--and her strong, silent, live-in boyfriend reeling--I was eager to find out how many more challenges would beset this tortured couple. Well, let me tell you: They are in for quite a roller coaster ride in this book!

With their story continuing to unfold, young lovers Colin and Allie find their destinies much more deeply intertwined, but looming danger, deception and heartbreaking strife keep dogging them at every turn. For some reason, this second book had me in an even stronger vise grip than the first, perhaps because all the key plot threads were now in place, and the author was able to spin an even more intricate web of passion and angst and heartwrenching drama!

“Don’t let me fall…”

As the emotional stakes intensify, I found myself incredibly entrenched in the romantic journey of this hero and heroine. Colin is a strong, taciturn hero who will go to extreme lengths to keep Allie and her daughter safe. (Perhaps too extreme...at times bordering on overly possessive control freak tendencies?) Meanwhile Allie, a true survivor who has been dealt a horrible hand, never falters in her desire to build a safe, happy home for her toddler daughter. But this couple’s journey is fraught with so many obstacles. Where to start? Colin is a “person of interest” with the CPD. He runs a legit restaurant, but is that just a front for illegal trafficking tied to the Chicago underground? Is Colin’s creepy brother, Philip (the heroine's best friend’s Shelly’s boyfriend) really as menacing as he appears? How far will Allie go to keep her daughter’s baby daddy from making good on his threats? And when she finds herself more and more dependent on Colin, can Allie truly surrender her heart—and place her daughter future—in the hands of a sullen, tight-lipped loner who still keeps her at arm’s length?

Through the course of this novella, there are a couple of spine chilling plot twists --relayed via flashback---which totally blindsided me. Left me feeling sick and heartbroken and emotionally raw. But these jaw-dropping revelations definitely added more context to Allie’s internal battle between light and darkness, and shed light on her sadomasochistic need to derive pleasure from pain. I felt the heroine's trauma so acutely at times, it was palpable--especially when her past and present collided in one soul-shattering, irrevocable encounter that showcased the damaged recesses of her heart in all its poignant, shameful, brutal glory.

“Hurt me, hurt me, hurt me. Make me hurt, cry, bleed. Help me get it out, because I can't cry on my own."

As the book title suggests, this couple’s journey is “Hard” at times, riddled with so much angst and drama, mistrust and uncertainty. But through it all, there is a potent, almost primal, connection that tethers them to one another. An achingly vulnerable Allie rouses Colin’s need to nurture and protect, to mark her as his, but how can he fulfill her dark desires without destroying the both of them in the process? And will Allie ever forgive herself for pushing the man she loves to the absolute brink? I think Ms. Warren does a stellar job of exploring the shades of gray in these flawed characters as they try to navigate one emotional minefield after another.

Although there are certainly dark forces conspiring against this couple, there are also many sweet, sexy, heartwarming elements which add nice buoyancy to the plot. I was especially moved by the delightful family bonding that took place between Colin, Allie and baby Bailey. Precious moments which give us an inside glimpse of what happily ever after COULD look like if they somehow make it through to the other side. But when evidence of a devastating “betrayal” comes to light, will Allie be forced to forfeit her fairytale dreams to ensure her and her daughter’s very survival?

Bottom line: This suspenseful, emotionally-riveting second installment surpassed my expectations. And just like with the first novella, HARD culminates in a cliffhanger that will leave you aching for more.

After the odd ending of the first book I decided I would at least give this on a shot. I gave up about half way through. I don't normally give up on books but the heroine was just so back and forth I just couldn't read anymore.

We’re back with Allie and Colin an we watch how their relationship grows from what was meant initially as a one night stand to something. more real. Andrew, the father of Allie’s daughter is back and that’s not a good thing for anyone – we don’t know his motivation, but we know that Colin is incredibly protective of her, and that’s not going to bode well. What we see happen is his alpha side come out and he offers to help, and does. Challenge of course is that Allie’s been taking care of herself for such a long time, that she’s not willing to just sit back, and she meets with Andrew as well. We all know that’s going to bite her but we’ll see how that happens.

Add to that, Allie is now living with Colin, their lives are intertwined, and she’s learning more about what his life entails. While he has the cafe, there’s other work that he doesn’t for his brother that’s less than savory and one day that crosses into her world. The police come looking for her when they know that Colin is out, scare her and try to get information that they likely shouldn’t have and will get her in further trouble if she discovers it.

While this is going on, we learn that Shelly is with Colin’s brother – so the families are intertwined. We don’t know what everyone does, what the motivations and implications are, but what we do know is that there’s no lack of excitement and energy.

We’re left off on a cliff – knowing that there are investigations into people’s past and connections between people that shouldn’t make sense. We don’t know what meetings were organic and what was a set up, and we don’t know what that means for the future. Who’s on what side, who’s going to lose trust and love and who’s going to end up with what they should rightly have. So, onto the third and final installment of this series (I think) to see what happens next.

I think these are not truly separate books. The book started right from where Fierce ended. This is my review and there is going to be spoilers, sorry!

Colin is making breakfast and Allie feels infatuated by him. He is too good with Bailey. This is totally understandable cause Allies past is quite colorful. Those little things from the past are revealed in this middle book and Allie tries to turn herself from victim to fighter.

Skye Warren has written it beautifully, but I hoped that Allie could linger in those memories longer. Story goes on and the horrible past seems to be forgotten quite soon. Not in thoughts but in emotional level. This left me little cold and I couldn't find a connection to Allie.

Also Colin didn't grew with this middle book. He seemed to be passive and I noticed that I was more interested in his brother Philip than him.

All in all, this book was great middle book and I recommend it if you want to read something nice and entertaining after hard day at work 😉

I don't get the relationship between Allie and Colin. They started out as strangers and moved in together too soon after meeting each other. There are so many secrets going on that I am confused as to what is going on.
I wish Allie for once would stand up for herself. She acts like she deserved being raped twice. Then to go out once a month and find guys to pretty much repeat the offense when having sex with her.
Also I didn't understand in the first book when Allie's father found out she was pregnant he told her to leave she wasn't welcome in his home. Then in book 2 she talks about how he sent money home to her while he was out of town on work.
Hope that some questions are answered in this series soon.

I'm not crazy about the fact that this is more like a few chapters out of the middle of a book, but putting that aside, I'm enjoying the story, for now. This episode picks up right where 'Rough' leaves off. I'm thinking at this point that this should have been part of the first book without a break. The writing is good and the characters well developed, whether you like them or not. There are good bits of spice sprinkled along the way which gives the story flavor, and answers to the big questions are slowly coming to light. I'm going to give the next book a go yet, but it better have an ending or I'll be disappointed.

I was hoping to get into the nitty gritty of the Chicago Underground but we are still skirting around Colon and Ailie's quick and vastly evolving relationships. Don't get me wrong, we are slowly getting snippets into just what Colin and his brother Phillip are into but I was hoping we would be seeing a lot more action right about now.
The story is still keeping me interested and I'm hoping that the next book will be more centred around the Mafia. So many questions I just hope I get the answers.

Oh, Skye, you can't hold onto a plot or literally any character detail, but of course I'm hooked.

This series is ridiculous. The ages are all over the place, the character backgrounds constantly shifting, and it's all about the drama of it. I mean, I knew to expect this. She's done it to me before and I don't know why I expected her earlier books to be better, but damn, can you imagine what her books might actually be like if she had real editors?

Skye, hit me up.

Onto book 3. 😂

Still trying to figure out the heroine and what she wants to do. Still can't like the hero (he basically spoke 70 words in the whole book and 60 of them where in the heat of a sex scene). Still don't know why I keep reading it. Guess I wanna know if the heroine's finally gonna get a grip on her life.

I received a copy of this book as the February read of the Handsome Devil Book Club.

Book two was okay, but it lacked romance and had too much drama. I found it inconsistent that Allie, who is unemployed and raising a child, assumes a controlling role after moving in with Colin. She gets upset with him for working with his brother, Philip, whom she views as shady, even though Colin is the one paying the bills while she struggles.

The second half of this book was almost unbearable. It's heavy in the dark aspect, but I won't get into details, only thinking about it gives me a headache.

Also, that final line was so badass. Oh, man. What's gonna happen next?
