Once upon a time I was the girl who had everything, the clothes, the car. The rich dad who spoiled me. But the truth was, the only thing I had was my body. I used it to buy my way out.

I took a bite of the apple knowing full well what would happen.

That's how I became a call girl. That's the story of how I ended up in hell.

There's only one man who makes me wish things had been different. One man who could never be with a girl like me. Luke is a cop. Untouchable. Unbreakable. And dangerous in his own way.

When I end up on the run, he's the only one I can turn to.

And he just might be my downfall.

The intensity of the story keeps building. I'm no closer to knowing the truth than when I first started. So you know after I'm done typing this up, I'll be moving to the next. For the record Philip scares the shit out of me, his interest in a child, a seventeen year old, is frightening. Sick much asshole? Luke mmmmmmm, he's everyone woman's fantasy while Shelly is stubbornly independent. Reckless at times as though she has a death wish, or wants to go out in a blaze of glory. The chess pieces are all on the board, the intrigue and mystery of everyone's part is enticing! Onto the next, solid five star read! Enjoy

This is book 4 in Skye Warren's "Chicago Underground Series".
Lots of mystery, romance and thrills in this fourth book. This is Shelly and Luke's story. Shelly is a prostitute trying to get out of the trade but keeps running into brick walls. I love her character. She is strong, fierce and protective and doesn't give up. Luke is the good cop that Shelly just can't stop thinking about. The story is short but moves along at a fast pace with a great plot and lots of mystery and danger. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!!

Sky Warren's heroines are always touched by a deep sense of betrayal and a sad, resigned despair. Shelley is a woman who's used to being used. Despite her efforts, almost childlike in their hope, to leave a life of selling herself behind, she finds herself trapped in a whirlwind of crime, monstruous men and impossible pacts with the devil.

I think this is a thriller that feels like a film noir, with wise Madams, high-paid escorts forced to submit to a dead-end commercial slavery emporium, and a good cop who wants to redeem a lady of the night without realizing he's got to get dirty before the mess can be cleaned out.

With a sorrowful narrative, the main character's voice stands out in all her sardonic, hard, relentless, self-deprecating glory. I felt so sorry for her pain, and all the unending corner her life has become. I loved to see Colin and Ally again (from the previous three part-Chicago Underground story), even Philip though I'm not sure how I feel about his sudden interest for Elie, another soul chased after by ruthless predators of the underground.

Above all, it's painful to watch Luke, the good cop, and Shelley hurting each other, wanting each other so much but crashing against the walls of their imposed roles.

U have many hopes for next part which I'm sure will be full of hard decisions and hopefully a closeness betweeen Shelley and Luke that's more optimistic.

Wild starts the story of Shelly. It takes place a little while after the end of Fierce. Shelly is recovering from the showdown that happened in the previous book. She has also been out of the life of prostitution that has been the only life that she's ever know. Shelly started down this road to help her friend Allie with her child. She made a lot of money at it. She even became the live-in mistress of Philip, Colin's crime boss brother.

Here we see how even though Shelly has been putting on a brave face for everyone about her career choice, it is not something that she enjoys. The truth of the life comes out when she tries to apply for a job at a local bookstore, only to find out that the manager is a former client. The horror that she faces in that she will never be able to find a "normal" job. She spends time finding very young girls who are just starting out in the life and taking them to a shelter to help them.

Then her pimp comes to her "secured" apartment and makes her an offer that she can't refuse to work a party. When things go wrong at the party, Shelly escapes with another young girl who really didn't want to be there. They run to Luke, a detective that Shelly helped during Allie's story.

This is a great start to Shelly's story. I'm very intrigued to see how things work out between her and Luke. You can really see how much they want to be together, but how difficult it would be for both of them. Plus, you add in Philip with this new girl Ella. That adds a whole new level of creepy to the story. It will be interesting to see where that storyline goes. Ms. Warren knows how to keep you on your toes, that is for sure.

**Book was provided to me by the author. This review is my opinion and was not requested or provoked in anyway by the author.

Another emotional and dark read from Skye Warren. The main character is Shelly in this story, she was introduced in Rough, but now we get to find out who she is and what she is about. She is a deeply troubled woman with a heart of gold. She helps everyone who comes into her orbit, but she doesn't help herself. Shelly is a strong character, and despite the fact that she's a hooker, and thinks herself lowest of the low, I can't help but love her. And Luke, oh Luke he is yummy but I wanted more from him, but I'm thinking there will be much more in the next 2 books to come.

Other supporting characters are really strong in this book as well. Phillip, he is complicated sexual deviant, but you can't help but root for him too! I am torn, I kinda want Shelly to be with Phillip, but then again I know Luke will be better for her! Another character in this story is strong as well, her name is Ella, at least that is the name she will answer to. She is a mystery that I can't wait to know more about.

I love Skye Warren's writing, it's deep, emotional, harsh, hopeful and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I can't wait for the next book in this incredible series!

We had met Shelly in the first trilogy within the series and we got a sense for the kind of friend she was – the lengths that she was willing to go in order to provide stability for her best friend Allie as well as for herself. She had lost the sense of attachment to herself a long time ago – she knew that there was a need sometimes to disconnect because she knew the effect that she had on men and used that to her own ability.

We pick up the story after the shooting from the first few books – so we know what got her to the point that she’s at. Maybe not the history in it’s entirety but we started to understand some of the dynamics that she had in her life with the men she surrounded herself with. There was Luke, the cop that she was providing information to, and he was protecting her, building some type of bond, but what we learned is that the bond that she thought they had was potentially founded on his need to search for and save someone else. there was a pattern and a history that he didn’t quite share and when she learned some of the information, it made him both more of a challenge and yet someone that she grew even more emotions for.

On the other side of things, we start to see her dynamic with Phillip – Colin’s brother and we see what brought them together and what kept them together, but we watch how fragile things have become to see what they are now. It’s sad to watch the way that things were and what they have become now, but I have faith that we will see something resolve in a way that’s deserving of them.

Then there’s Henri – a man that has a lot of power in the city – especially over women of a certain profession and the dark underbelly of Chicago. We see how he some how tracks Shelly down, lures her in with the promise of a job to keep her safe (sort of) and the way that turns out is what takes us on the crazy and wild ride of this first installment of her trilogy.

There’s a private party and a girl that needs saving because she’s far too innocent for the life that she’s found herself in. We see that Shelly wants to save those that could still use something better in their lives probably because she wasn’t able to have someone do that for her.

What happens though at this party is debauchery, pain, and inevitably, a few murders. Shelly and the girl she was trying to save are now the ones that are being hunted as the murders and we watch Shelly try to sort out what the connection is with the girl – Ella and how she can help clear both their names and give them their lives back.

We watch how Luke wants to help her but keeps her at arms length.

We watch how Phillip protects her but wants her to make a trade that she’s not willing to make

and we wonder when Henri is going to strike and what the price will be.

So, all in all a roller coaster of sorts and I can’t wait to jump into the 2nd book now to see what’s going to happen next.

This book is the start of Luke and Shelly's story.
Luke is a cop and Shelly is a prostitute. She wanted him but she knew she was not good enough for him so she had become his informant just to stay close to him. That lead to her getting shot. After she was shot he sat with her in the hospital. He felt guilty but she didn't blame him for any of it.
She had promised him she would get out of the business and she did try went to an interview to only find out that the manager was a previous client. She knew it was hopeless and she would not be able to change and she was running out of money. She could not go back to Phillip even though he had told her if she needed anything to contact him but there was no way she could to that. She had betrayed him in the worst way.
She got sent to a party but she didn't really want to be there. She wished Luke would save her but she knew there was no saving her. She heard something in one of the rooms and even though she knew she should just walk away and keep her nose out of it she didn't and the girl ended up punching her and leaving the room.
She chased her down and got her out of the hotel before they ran across their pimp and he beat the crap out of them or worse. Well, it looked like he did something to them after all. She didn't know where else to go so she took the girl with her to Luke's and while they where there she heard Luke tell the department that he would bring them in. The girl (Shelly named Ella because she won't give her name.) was watching the tv and seen that they were wanted for murder at the hotel.
Shelly and Ella take off and the only other place to go is Phillip's house. He let them stay and he wants Ella because she is so innocent. Shelly does not want that to happen. She is trying to find a way to clear their name and get them out of trouble and safe.
She meets Luke asking for his help but he is not really wanting her to be near him. He wants Shelly but he will not have her as long as he believes she is hooking. She is not sure if she will ever be able to get out of the business.
One of the owners of a business who does "massages" but other stuff behind the door told Shelly she needed Luke to help her that there was some stuff going on and the girl she is protecting can put their pimp away. She needs to get to the bottom of this because she wants to get out and she wants to help Ella.
She has to figure out how to get Luke to help her and she needs to decided what it is about him that has her feeling this way.
Will she give into her feelings for him and will he let her in or will they always clash. Guess we will have to wait and see.

Raw. Gritty. Real life. No BS resides in this book.

Its been a while since reading such a true-to-life fiction story. Yet this read was not taboo or over-the-top in its realism. JE Taylor's books come to mind when I attempt to review Ms Warren's book however, where Taylor's books eviscerates the reader with realism, Warren's just touches on being emotionally [psychologically] visceral.

Stout, earthy characters: Shelly, Luke, Philip, Ella give Oscar performances. In fact, I think I met these people in real life. The perceptual, convincing contemporary premise had me turning the page with eager curiosity, cringing when Philip asks for Ella, and fearful that Henri would find Shelly. Overall this reads more like a weekly serial that borders on reality television and fiction.

AT THE MOMENT I AM HAVING MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT THIS STORY, but one thing for sure if it was a movie, the sexual tension would be off the charts.

BUT I do wish there were more Luke and Shelly moments but this book is more focused on the prostitution business than the characters' relationship. As important it might be, I HONESTLY would like to see more of the main players. I didn't read the first three books but I am guessing it all leads up to this point, especially telling us how the two met.

I am not having much high hopes for the next story but I will stay optimistic and hope that it would blow my mind and give it a 4 stars.

I was not a huge fan of the Chicago Unerground series before, so I was a bit doubtful. But I do appreciate Shelly as a main character. She is strong and feisty and doesn't let others push her around, which I can certainly appreciate.
What remains is that these novels are ridiculously short. Just put the three installments in one book and be done with it, this constant 70 page (or so) short novel style is bugging me...

Lord Skye, this was a mess. I was totally unmotivated to read it. No consistency in story or character, even with the appearances of many of these people in the previous three books. I know we joke about reading trash, but this was actual garbage.

This book contains abuse and violence, as well as incest (mentioned in passing) so it's not for everyone. There's a lot of potential here to develop the characters.

Hmm, this one was okay, but I haven't connected with Shelly yet. This first book didn't really focus on her and Luke. Interested to see where their story goes though.

gritty, dark romance

Dark and light but mostly dark- this story sheds light on the nefarious underworld of big cities and even bigger danger with lust and camaraderie folded in.

So after reading Allie and Colin’s book I was set to dive into Shelly and Luke’s book because it just had such an impossible feel to it. Also felt a lot like Pretty Woman…and what woman in their right mind doesn’t like that movie…it’s a classic!!
Anywho I just have to say upfront that Allie in this book is a self-righteous hypocrite…she stands there and tells Shelly she can’t possibly be in love with Luke that he is basically just a challenge to her when she didn’t know her ass from a hole in the ground when it came to love in her story with Colin. As much as I liked Allie’s story honestly I do NOT like Allie as a character. Shelly on the other hand I have loved from the get go, and granted their background is similar
Allie was raped by her best friend (who came back apologized and agreed to sign away his parental rights then left her alone)…. Those two really are not comparable when you look at it, and Allie needs to realize that even though her past wasn’t great that there are others who had it MUCH worse than her. Especially considering everything that Shelly has had to do in the past to help Allie with Bailey…she needs to remember just what Shelly had to do because Allie sure as hell was the one keeping a roof over Bailey’s head most of the time.
Now as much as I do LOVE Shelly’s character she is SO bullheaded and to prideful for her own good…so is Luke, they are literally made for one another. They both want each other but neither one wants to take the steps to make it happen because neither one wants to give anything to get it. It’s going to be interesting to see just who bends or if they both do in the end.

3.75 stars. Interesting start to a three-part serial by Skye Warren about a prostitute in love with a Chicago cop. She's mixed up in some *really* bad stuff, and he's in love with her and wants to help her, but he doesn't want to be involved with a prostitute. You get the picture.

The story is well-written and gritty; however, the romance between the hero and heroine just barely gets started in this part before it ends, and I'm on the fence about finishing the story, mostly because a) I don't quite feel bonded to the characters yet, and b) I didn't know it was a serial when I bought it. The description on Amazon led me to believe it was the first book in a three-part *series,* which is a very different beast than the first part of a three-part *book.* I'll probably buy the whole thing when it comes out as a bundle, but I'm not invested enough in the characters based on this first part to jump on the next two parts right away.

That said, the writing is excellent, and the story is interesting. I'll definitely check out more books by Skye Warren, but I'll be more careful to make sure they're full-length books (or a bundled serial) when I do.

So much better than previous books.

I have this book in stand-alone form and the boxed set, which claims can be read as a stand-alone.
But I got half way through this book and just felt like I was missing something.
So I went and read the previous books. Then this book made a whole lot more sense.
We have Shelley, Allie's best friend if you read books one, two, and three. She's a prostitute and in love with a cop for starters. And wanted for murder, also while trying to protect a girl who's hiding everything from her, including her name.
She's hiding out with Phillip. Who's also from the previous books.
Then we have Luke. He's trying to protect Shelley, while also keeping his job, as a cop.
This book is well written, and flows well.
I think this is the best book of the series so far.
Ends on a cliffhanger. The next book is out or you can also purchase the box set of books 4,5 and 6.

Loved this book. Shelly is a strong willed girl with a heart of gold even though she doesn't try and show it. Shes in fear of her life and runs to the one person she knows can help her Luke. While at luke's she over hears a conversation and she immediately questions if he can be trusted and she takes off. Feeling along and betrayed she goes to Phillip looking for help.

Phillip and luke couldnt be more different than day and night. Phillip is all sexy with a dark side in the bedroom. While Luke is a protector, sweet and the settle down with kind of man.

Then there is Ella who Shelly helps out before going on the run. Ella is keeping secrets and Shelly is trying to figure out what they are. They could end up being what she needs to stop fearing for her life.

I'm so excited to see what the rest of this series brings and read more of Shelly, Ella, Phillip and Luke.

A cop and an escort on the run...loved the blurb and really liked the exciting plot as well. It sounds like a simple enough idea but in true Skye Warren form, she always makes her stories dark with some interesting twists and the steamy romance is always in the forefront.
Luke (the cop) and Philip (the former lover) make an interesting contrast to each other and Shelly is torn between the man who once wanted her but feels betrayed and the one she desperately wants but feels like she can't have because of their differences.
It was really good and fun to read but just too short...I wanted more Luke and Shelly and even to know what happens with Philip's story later on.

This series keeps getting better. Shelly, Allie’s best friend, is trying to get out of prostitution but now she’s in trouble. She also has acquired “Ella” and is trying to help her get to safety when they both get set up. Ella is a mystery and is being forced into prostitution. Now they are hiding from Henry, the ruthless pimp. The only person who can help her is the person she betrayed and she doesn’t know if she can trust the person who she betrayed him for, the person she fell for. As she puts it “star-crossed lovers,” the hooker and the cop. I recommend reading this series and book.

This is the fourth book in the Chicago Underground series. You don't need to read the first three before this one. It will help with the minor characters and would show how helpful Shelly can be. What she did for Allie and for Bailey.

This is suppose to be Shelly and Luke's story. We didn't get much of them in this book.

I wish we would have gotten more of how she became his informant in the previous three books, but we didn't. I'm just not feeling there connection because we didn't get to see how it all started. We got one chapter that was from eight months earlier, that was it.

This is an ok read and I will continue to read the next books.

I loved this book. Shelly is a strong woman with a big heart. Fearing for her life, she goes to Luke for help and overhears him on the phone, feeling betrayed she ends up running to Philip. Philip has this sexy hot dark side and Luke is sweet and protective. I am loving both of these men very much. You also meet Ella, who has her own secrets. I can't wait to see how the story develops and what the next obstacle will be for Shelly. This book ends in a cliffhanger that will leave you wanting more.
Thank you for another great read Skye.

3 Star Read:
It has many redeeming qualities. The characters were likable at best neutral at worst. The writing was much better than expected. I developed an interest that withstood to the end. The plot was nice, somewhat original or had its own unique flair. The writing was good, and the pretense wasn’t half bad, the romance was simmering with few exceptions. The male/female lead showed hints of abuse both verbal and/or physical or signs of spot-on or forced chemistry. It was a tiny bit predictable. Overall, liked it enough, entertaining.

Great Book

The plot of the story was great with a lot of suspense ad danger all around them. Luke and Shelly, are great and you just know they make a great couple. I am so glad you brought, Collin and Allie from the previous books. So ready, to read more about them so keep them coming.

Unexpected

This story was not what I expected it to be and there only seemed to be little of anything to do with Luke and Shelly other than Shelly's longing for him. I guess I'd rather read a story that gets to the point rather than drag out over multiple books, when the story could have peaked at a 2 or 3 book series.
