Raine's spent a lifetime hunting monsters, but can she stop her prey from exposing the supernatural community one bloody corpse at a time?

Everyone fears the hunter in the shadows – even the monsters...

Raine McCord, forged in the brutal maelstrom of magic and science, is an elite hunter at home hunting monsters through the murky shadows of the supernatural world of the Kyn. Not an easy task when you're trying to keep the humans ignorant of the existence of creatures typically confined to campfire tales. And gets worse when a series of disappearances and deaths in the Kyn community suggests someone wants to rip the thin veil of secrecy aside and expose the horror lurking behind the curtain.

To even the odds, Raine is forced to partner with another hunter, the sexy and tantalizing Witch-Fey, Gavin Durand. Their partnership proves to be as challenging and dangerous as the prey they hunt. Especially when the trail leads back to the foundation that warped Raine's magic as a child and threatens to resurrect the nightmares of her past.

Determine to stop the threat to the Kyn, Raine and Gavin stalk their prey through a maze of lies, murder, and greed, but will the price they pay be too high?

Review originally published on V's Book Life

First Line: 'With a quick twist of her wrist, Raine slipped the blade between Quinn’s ribs. His heart gave one last desperate beat then fell silent. He slid slowly down her body to his knees, ending up in a strange, lover-like tableau.'
We start this book at the end of a battle, a fight that thankfully our heroine Raine has won. Her hands still shake after killing someone, something she believes still distinguishes her from the monsters she hunts. Within the first few pages, Raine's past is eluded to. Mentions of mixed heritage and being experimented on had me intrigued by Raine almost instantly...I love it when you have to wait to discover huge parts of the main characters life, makes things more interesting.
In SHADOW'S EDGE Supernatural creatures are called Kyn, and they aren't exactly the most forthcoming type...one of the reasons whey they're still in hiding from the human population. Raine is part of an otherworldly task force (theTaliesin) ...not only is she one of their best operatives but she is also one of the 12 elite chosen to police the supernatural world. Raine is a Wraith. Part fey part unknown, Raine is a mystery even to herself, but she's a damn good fighter. When Raine and Gavin (another Wraith) are called onto two separate cases they are briefed together as these cases may be connected. Gavin is given the task of looking into the suspicious accidents of 7 men, whereas Raine is given a breach in Taliesin security to investigate. Unbeknownst to Gavin, Raine is hiding secrets that may compromise the investigation...but Raine has her reasons for keeping secrets. For these secrets will open up the door to Rains horrific past...a door she may never be able to close. They knew it was going to be dangerous but now she and Gavin are the hunted...will Raine be able to save Gavin and in the process...save herself?

Our heroine is Raine, a half fey, half unknown woman. Her heritage is unknown because her mother died in the captivity Raine eventually escaped from. Raine has had a torturous past, one that leaves her waking up in cold sweats every night. Raine's nightmares bleed into her reality when the case she is working hits a little too close to a past that she would rather keep hidden. There are rumours about her... rumours that allude to the horrible things forced upon her while held captive in a human lab. Things that warped her very nature, Raine's magic is not what it once was. Now...it's deadly.
Raine may be good when it comes to knives and combat in general, but throw a hot, willing man into the mix and she has no clue what to do. Raine is closed off from everyone and her partner Gavin is no exception. There is some obvious sexual tension from the very beginning of the book, as if Raine has been lusting after Gavin for a while now. You get to see Raine slowly open herself up to Gavin throughout...trusting him more and more with pieces of herself. However one big revelation proves too much for this budding relationship and Raine begins to shut down again...but she wants Gavin's trust back. Raine doesn't want to have to rely on anyone but herself but Gavin somehow manages to wriggle under her skin. It doesn't hurt that he's gorgeous and enjoys pushing Raine's limits...plus they can spar together. I do think that Gavin falls into the 'Bad Boy' category...I expected him to develop into something more as the story progressed but nope, he remained firmly in the 'generic bad boy' category. I think his character could have been a little more, I think Raine deserved a little more but I guess it wasn't to be.

I had one bigger problem with SHADOW'S EDGE. The book shows so much promise, the characters are interesting and the plot is pretty complex. It had everything I look for in a good PR, a strong lead, good base plot, mystery, suspense...I just couldn't connect with it. I don't know what it was but something just didn't catch me. You know there are those books you have where you can start reading...intending to only read for 20 minutes but you get so absorbed you physically can't stop and the time just flies. I though SHADOW'S EDGE was going to be one of them, don't get me wrong...there were places that did happen, the action scenes mostly...the places where you saw Raine most at home...but then something would slow it down and I'd find myself putting it down to go make a cup of tea. I can't quite put my finger on it but something about Raine and her relationship with Gavin just didn't always connect with me. It may just be me and in places I did enjoy it but there's just something...gah I can't even explain it properly but I didn't feel part of their story...I was merely an observer looking through a window, seeing but not feeling.

Anyway, despite this I believe this series has a lot of potential and I will keep an eye out, I was just a little disappointed with this particular book, it could have been more.

The problem is when you have a first person point of view, but the leading character is prone to suppress emotions. It makes a distant and clinical read for the reader who has a hard time connecting to the character.
That is the only flaw this book presented to me so far.
Interesting characters, interesting plot and world building but the writing style makes it impossible for me to build a connection.
Even emotional outbursts are so controlled I simply don’t feel it through the pages.

I am only at 37% into it and I will keep reading for sure.

What a wonderful book. Awesome characters. I loved Raine. Such a tough cookie. And that Gavin. Whew!! **fans self** I can't wait to see where things go with them. Jami teased us with a glimpse into their romance, and I hope it heats up in book two, because they are just an awesome pair. :) Nicely done, Jami Gray!!

Shadow's Edge is the first full-length novel in the Kyn Kronicles series, which details a contemporary world in which both humans and 'others' live. Raine is living the best way she can, whilst dealing with magic and the unknown roiling through her body and mind. She was a lab experiment at 15 years old and this has left her with capabilities beyond the norm, even for Kyn. Working for her uncle as a Wraith, Raine is usually working alone. However, the job that comes through has her working in partnership with Gavin. The tension between these two is high, but this is more of a suspense story, than a romance. It is full of action, and interesting characters.

Very well written, with no editing or grammatical errors to disrupt the reading flow, I thoroughly enjoyed my first foray into the world of Kyn. My heart broke for Raine so many times, and I was completely satisfied with the ending. Gavin is the perfect counterpart for her, and I look forward to reading more about him. Cheveyo is another character who wormed his way into my heart. I may have an idea about who he is, but I won't say for sure, as I am not sure, and Jami Gray has been known to throw me a curve ball before!

A wonderful (full-length) start to the series, and I definitely recommend it.

Raine is a Wraith, who has a terrible past life and works to kill the bad boys of the Kyn (supernatural beings) society. While she fights her own nightmares and prefers to live alone in her mental fortress, she was ordered by her boss to partner for her next case with Gavin, a very attractive, mysterious Kyn. Raine is trying hard to resist the charm boy, but you know how fate plays. Raine has to come clean with her past, face the truth and win the love of Gavin. But the case she is working with Gavin, is hitting pretty close to home. How can she bring the guilty person to justice, when she herself is guilty of so many crimes?

Shadow's Edge is a fantasy read with a complex plot and characters. Just when you think the plot leads to something, the author brings in another surprise that throws us off. For a debut, this book is great. The romance, mystery and fantasy were all splattered across the pages in right amounts at right places.

The only problem is that there is no attraction between me and the novel. Maybe this thing is only for me..if you enjoy the book in a different way, don't forget to inform me. I was thrilled to see the plot stretching before me and had fun at all the sexual tension between the couple.

Kyn Kronicles will surely become a new series, that I would wait for.

Urban Fantasy isn't a genre I usually read. Shadow's Edge is only the second one I've read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Raine, a Wraith, is the heroine, strong, capable and wise, she has some terrifying baggage from her earlier years that is always whispering in her ear. She works for an organization that takes out undesirables from the Kyn society and gets thrown together with hot, sexy Gavin to work her next case.

I loved the paranormal aspect of the book. Jami Gray's imagination was in full force and vivid. It was action packed, with exciting and well written fight scenes and plenty of surprises.

I'm really giving it a 4.5 rating but it won't let me color in a half of a star. The reason I'm taking off 1/2 of a star - the sexual tension was wonderful and I so wanted Raine and Gavin to get together. I love sex and sizzle in my romances, whatever genre, but, alas, I think I have to wait until the 2nd in the series, Shadow's Edge.

If you're a fan of urban fantasy, and apparently, I am now, you'll enjoy this book. Nice job, Jami.

I highly recommend this book for those looking for a strong heroine to follow in an urban fantasy! I loved Raine--she was her own woman...none of that too stupid to live/needs a man to breathe sort of stuff. :) Can't wait to sink my teeth into the second book!

A very intense urban fantasy, Shadow's Moon dives directly in. Raine is not the strongest of heroines for the first half of the book. I can totally understand it's mostly from a fear of what was done to her fifteen years earlier at the hands of Aaron Talbot and his team. There's certainly plenty of flashbacks and nightmares to help fill in some of the tortuous experiments she was subjected to. But at the same time she seemed to frequently lie to herself and others; about her control, about her feelings regarding her lack of a bond with her uncle and the emerging bond with Gavin, she hid her involvement with 4/7 deaths that Gavin is investigating......

The case itself kept me going when the character drove me mad. Figuring out who's trying to hack into the security company that is their front. Solving who or what Palleo is and who's behind it. Who is slipping Kyn secrets to the scientists and military....

I'll admit I was shocked at who Quinn's partner in crime turned out to be. I never would've expected her. I do think the second half of the book was better as there seemed to be more action as things were coming together. I'm definitely intrigued enough to try book two and see what is next for Raine and Gavin and the Kyn

I love supernatural/paranormal books. Why? Because I love the idea of the unexplainable being possible. The world that Shadow's Edge encompases is one in which humans are almost completely in the dark about the existence of the Kyn, supernatural beings: wizards, witches, demons, and shifters. Raine is part Fey, but she's also something more. Tortured, experimented upon, and changed by horrific acts that took her mother's life, she's not entirely anything any more.

Gavin is another Fey. He was an interesting character. I almost feel like he was more interesting than Raine, in part because since the book is written from Raine's perspective, we learn about Gavin in bits and pieces, much as Raine is learning about him. It's obvious from the start that there's the potential for something between them. I loved seeing Raine make slow progress towards letting go, trusting, and letting someone in. Even if some of that progress backfires on her.

The central mystery worked very well. Jonah was a suitably enigmatic character. Is he good or evil? Does he know of Raine?

I found myself biting my lip several times at the interactions between Raine and Gavin. I wanted to alternatively hug and slap them.

What struck me most though about this book was how well it was written. The imagery is phenomenal. The information about the world is given to us in bits and pieces, so there isn't too much telling at any one point. It's written in present day real world, set in Portland, OR which makes it very relatable.

When the book came up to its most dramatic parts, I couldn't look away. I read the last half in one sitting. It's not tied up neat and tidy in a bow at the end, so be aware. You might want to pick up books 1 and 2 at the same time so you can just keep on reading.

Highly recommended.

Raine and Gavin are Kyn, more so, they are Wraith, an elite warrior with in the Kyn similar to the human Black Ops teams. Gavin is a Witch, Raine is Fey, but Raine is much much more, thanks (not really the right word though!) to being a test subject she really didn't want any part of. Called to investigate some deaths within the company of the son of the man at the helm of those tests, Raine is pushed way past her limits. And Gavin helps with that pushing but not in the same way.

I read Ms Gray's PSY-IV teams series, 3 of them back to back, and I loved them. This one is a little less...in-yer-face but more a slow growing tale that has much more to come.

I liked that we don't get all of Raine's past in one go, all of her connections to the bosses of Taliesin, the company that hides the Kyn. I liked the slow burn between Raine and Gavin.

I really like the way the story works, how it resolves itself, how it's told.

What I didn't like, was the single person point of view. Now, after reading the PSY-IV teams books, I LOVED them, and they were single point of view and multi point of view. BUT only RAINE has a say here, and after reading the little short that precedes this one, Wrapped in Shadows, part of the Tangled in Shadows collection, I expected Gavin to have a say. I LOOKED forward to Gavin having a say and he doesn't. AND I wanted to hear from him!

That reason is the only reason it gets.....

Raine's character is the best part of this novel. She is on her own through a lot of the novel. The reader will get the feeling that Raine is smart and brave. Some readers might think she didn't necessarily need Gavin. Gavin's character was nice enough, the author did a good job of making him likable to the reader. He followed the "bad boy" stereotype. The romance budding between them was enjoyable, but almost didn't seem necessary to the story.

The action scenes were perfect. The reader will love the constant stream of action and excitement portrayed by the author. There are some interruptions with Raine, sometimes she starts thinking about Gavin or not focusing on the fight as much as one might think she would, but the scenes were good overall. The author does a great job where the details are concerned, providing the reader with plenty of little details that help the reader to picture the events and environment.

Overall, this is a good dark paranormal book. A fan of this genre should definitely give this book a chance. Shadow's Edge is recommended to adult readers.

Move SHADOW’S EDGE to the top of your reading list!

If I could, I’d give a rating of 4.95 stars. I am not usually attracted to the urban fantasy genre, but Shadow’s Edge by Jami Gray changed my expectations, and has set a very high bar for other authors to reach in the same genre. I bought Gray’s book to support her as an author and was amazed to see what an incredible story had been awaiting me.

My expectation was to run into a cast of characters that could be easily classified into light or dark, ugly or cute. I didn’t expect a well written, realistic story which made me forget that I wasn’t reading a classic thriller or spy novel. Suspense and plot twists saturate every page. Gray developed her characters just enough to keep the reader interested in what happened to them in the next book. Two things complete my testimony for anyone who loves a great story: I recommended Shadow’s Edge to my boyfriend, who is never a fan of urban fantasy, and Shadow’s Edge has made this the first time since Hunger Games or Divergent that I couldn’t wait to read the rest of the series.

Shadow"s Edge Book 1

Raine (who is part Fey and something else) and her mother were experimented on when Raine was only 15. Unfortunately Raines mom does not make it out of alive from the lab. With the help from Raines uncle she is able to escape her captivates and leave lap behind.
Raine is now a Black ops agent, where she is in charge of any threats to the Kyn commuity which is all the paranormal in the area. Raine works Security as her cover job during the day for Taliesin Security. When she is asked to look into a security breach with Gavin that's when sparks go flying!
Raine is struggling with her own personal demons that threaten to surface. Can her and Gavin find the person(s) who are killing person's connected to a biogenetic company.

This book has everything in it. you have your Fey, Demons, Witches/Wizards, and Shifters. What more could you ask for?! Plus you have a great story to follow. The story and characters flowed so well together. it was like watching a movie in my head! Book 2 here i come!!
I would rate this book a 5 fangs out 5

I LOVED this book. Yes I capped the word. If there's a word beyond awesome, then that's what I'll use to describe it.

The heroine, Raine rocked from the very beginning. Being a tough kick ass female had to be one of my favorite aspects of the story. But when Ms. Gray added more than kicks, punches and slashes , the depth and intensity increased phenomenally. Raine’s past carved her into who she is. Oh the emotions Ms. Gray portrayed from Raine. I could feel her pain and anguish and wanted to give her a hug (as if she’d allow it).

Don’t get me started on Gavin. He’s the kind of guy I’d accidentally lick if I got too close (gross but true). Alpha male with super skills who isn’t afraid of a strong woman.

The twists and turns kept me engaged and thinking throughout. The story was so well written it had me shaking my head in wonder. I have absolutely nothing to complain about with this book. Yes it was that good.

So at first I thought this book was going to drag on but after first couple of chapters it really started to pick up and I started getting really hooked. I really liked the story line, it was something different from other paranormal books that I have read and that was nice. I am looking forward to reading more in the series and find out if things get a little better for Raine. I felt so sad for her a lot of times, so much she had to endure and really from what you read not a lot of support. All of it is deceiving and though I had my questions on the one selling out their kind I was still pretty happy with the ending. First by this author and look forward to reading more.

There was never a dull moment in this book. I was thrown into a world where the author brings everything alive for you. I found myself trying to discover the mystery right along with the main characters. I found myself yelling at Raine when she couldn't see what was right in front of her. I can't wait for book 2 I want to be a part of her growth. She's a bad a** hunter with major confidence until it comes to personal self esteem. She has so many walls up I can't wait to see who she decides she can let them down for if at all! Fantastic writing Gray!! I anxiously await for the summer!

I was a little unsure about this book, but truth be told, I ended up loving it. It was fast paced, amazing fight scenes, good myth building. Gray answered just enough questions to satisfy you but left lots of threads unraveled to keep the reader coming back. I definitely wanted more resolution in one particular spot! I think this series has a lot of potential in the paranormal romance department.

Meh

Written confusingly without any reason explaination for how things actually work. I still felt list at the end of the novel. The story was okay, but I'm not sure if the "twists" were actually twists or if the story was just so haphazard that no one, not even the author, knew what was coming.

Very good, a few typos, but nothing major. I liked how Raine finally seemed to accept who she was, kinda. She still carries way too much guilt and distrust- would have liked to see this improve- maybe in book 2. Good supporting secondary characters.
