Saxon's Soul

Rate this book
Many believed he didn’t possess a heart.

Not true. It was just hidden beneath a layer of protection so deep no one would ever penetrate it. Until her.
Aspen.
Sweet. Innocent. Beautiful.
And not the woman for him. Despite his reputation, Joel Saxon wasn’t in the habit of corrupting innocents. Especially when she had no clue about the dark desires he possessed. Of how much control he would want over her life. Of what he would demand, possess, claim…
If she was his.

Aspen had been kicked down so many times, she wondered how she found the energy to get back up. The only light in her life were her little boys. They kept her going. They were all she had time for. All she needed or wanted…
So then why couldn’t she get the enigmatic, sexy, dominant Saxon out of her mind? Why did she wake in the middle of the night with dreams of him touching her, taking her…
Loving her.
Impossible.

This series is so much fun to read, especially if you’re looking for a story with a bit of romance,a bit of BDSM,and a little bit of danger.
Not too deep, but very entertaining, and with very “interesting” men. *coughs*

Saxon’s story was one i hád to read,he was a man with layers i couldn’t wait to see unfold.
He is not looking for any kind of relationship, but he gets it anyway when he starts helping Aspen.
A single mother of two sweet boys, she has to rely on a mother that hates living with her.
In fact, she never cared about Aspen, and hates babysitting her boys.
When she takes off,and Saxon finds out,he takes matters into his own hands.
He offers Aspen a job in his still to open restaurant,ánd he gives her a place to stay in his guesthouse.
Nice and close,so he can keep an eye,and his hands on her......
He dóes seem to have trouble keeping it casual for a man that doesn’t do commitment, though.

Aspen has spent her life being abandoned and let down.
So,when Saxon takes her and her boys under his wings, she waiting for the moment he’ll make her leave.
But the longer they’re together, the more confusing it gets, because he doesn’t seem in a rush to send her off.
In fact,he seems intent on keeping her,ánd her boys!
Can he be the exception?
Should she dare to open her heart for the man everyone says has no heart?

At times funny,at times sad, with a splash of danger, but mostly sweet, this was a very entertaining read!
I am left with a need to hear more about his brother,Cole,though....

4.4 stars.

Saxon is just pure sex. And so adorable with the twins.
I loved this even more the second time, I’m not sure why only I gave it 3 stars the first time but it was definitely a 4 star read the second.

I love all the kink elements in this, they were written absolutely beautifully.
It was really fun watching Saxon introduce Aspen to everything.

Each book I read from this author, time and again, makes me fall even more in love with her writing.

First, let me advise potential readers that although this is part of a series and features appearances by characters from the other books, it can be read as a stand-alone (while some references are confusing, they aren't central enough to the storyline to really matter).

If you're looking for a light, consensual BDSM book with likeable characters, you will enjoy this; I did. Although the story is a variation on the very predicable Cinderella plot, the characters have a maturity and levelheadedness frequently absent in these generic books, and you cannot help rooting for their HEA.

Saxon is the very wealthy owner of the local BDSM club who takes an interest in the penniless Aspen, a single mother to twin baby boys. An aspiring baker, she accepts his offer to work in his new restaurant. The book details their growing relationship as the experienced dom introduces the newbie sub to BDSM, working through her trust issues and his commitment phobias along the way.

I particularly appreciated four aspects of this book. First, and most importantly, Saxon was a very good dom -- in a genre too full of very bad ones. Unlike most of those dom characters, Saxon didn't expect Aspen to trust him immediately and on very short acquaintance; rather, he worked for it as he made her and her children's lives safer and easier (D/s relationships mean nothing if the dom doesn't step up "in real life" and Saxon does, in spades). Because their sexual relationship developed relatively slowly (for this genre), the trust and open communication needed for a successful BDSM relationship felt more real here.

Secondly, the author creates a more egalitarian relationship than is usual in these books. Aspen was a strong, independent woman who submitted to the man who had earned her trust, not to anyone else:
“I’m not submissive.”

“But you’re a submissive. That can be something very different. Someone can be very powerful in business. Can make decisions all day that affect the lives of hundreds, then come home and surrender themselves in the bedroom to their partner. Give everything over to them, knowing and trusting their partner will give them precisely what they need.”
While Saxon is controlling, he isn't domineering and doesn't try to fight her battles for her ("You’re smart, mature, and I trust you. If you say you can handle Renard then I will support you").

Thirdly, the author depicted a couple who dealt with each other in a mature fashion: present was neither melodramatic angst (what little there was of it arose naturally from Aspen's difficult childhood) nor an artificial lack of communication designed to keep the couple apart. If I have one quibble here it is that we -- and Saxon -- know far more about her than she does about him, and I found Aspen's lack of curiosity about his past odd for a woman with children to think about

Finally (in terms of positives), Ms. Roberts approached the lifestyle in its essence: emphasizing safe, sane, and consensual; the importance of communication, honesty, and trust; and the fact that both the dominant and submissive are important, equal partners in the dynamic -- even if their roles are different (and dommes, male subs, and switches make brief appearances, so no gender essentialism exits).

What kept this book from getting 5 stars from me was the writing. Although Ms. Roberts writes naturalistic dialogue, all her books contain problematic transitions: her chapters often start or end so abruptly that it takes me a minute or two to figure out where the characters are (logistically, geographically, chronologically, emotionally) and it's not always clear who is talking. In addition, her villains tend to be so caricatured they might as well be twirling mustaches; and her plots leave a great deal to be desired. In this particular case, several plot holes exist. How and why, for example, did ? I also thought the first two-thirds of this book were stronger than the ending: we're suddenly introduced to two characters who have no bearing on our MC (other than to provide an artificial reason for Saxon to leave Aspen for a length of time) and add nothing to the overall story.

4 stars. I highly recommend this book.

Note: I adhere to the ratings system as laid out by Goodreads: 2 stars = it was okay; 3 stars = liked it; 4 stars = really liked it; 5 stars = it was amazing. I gave this book 4 stars because I really liked the MC, even though I thought the book needed editing and it slowed down towards the end with too many unnecessary plot complications. I do not think that every book I read is "amazing;" further, I think that it cheapens the rating system to always assign 4 or 5 stars. If a book really earns the 4 or 5 stars (and I realize that this is, to some degree, subjective), I'll give them -- but it certainly shouldn't apply to every book. YMMV, and everyone should enjoy/rate these books as they wish.

Additional Note: I did not receive this book as an ARC; I'm not another author who hosts or is hosted by other authors in this genre on our websites; and I'm not friends with the authors IRL, "friends" on this site, or friends on any social media site.

Didn’t like the way that Aspen acts like an abused wife.

I was really looking forward to Saxon’s book and yes in parts it was enjoyable, and the sex scenes in the beginning were really hot. As their ‘relationship’ progressed I felt more and more uncomfortable. Aspen acts like an abused wife who is doing things that she doesn’t want to do to please her man, and I didn’t like that. At times he knows that she won’t like something but he does it anyway to push her boundaries. It crossed the line a few times into non consent.

When Aspen meets Saxon she’s working two jobs has a alcoholic abusive mother who steals her money, and has twin six month old boys. Life is a struggle, she has no food in her house, she’s exhausted and then her mother leaves her so she has no one to look after her sons. Saxon moves her into his guest house, buys her sons things, treats her like a queen, but tells her it’s temporary and he doesn’t do relationships. So Aspen is terrified that if she displeases him she’ll have nothing, not even a car a he gets rid of it as he deems it unsafe. It felt way too controlling. She ends up calling him sir most of the time and I didn’t like that she has no control over life. She doesn’t even have a phone as her mother stole it. She has no way on contacting any one. He tells her that Gwen his employee is looking after her sons, and they’re going away for a weekend and she’s not happy about it but she goes along with it. This is a woman who had complete control over everything before, now has none. She can’t phone Gwen to check on her sons as she doesn’t have a phone! The whole weekend is spent in bed or on the settee with him making her wear a chastity belt that has vibrators in, and she has to ask permission to go to the toilet! Aaaargh….. 😡😡😡😡 They don’t go for walks in the beautiful woodland, they don’t talk, THEY HAVE SEX, SEX AND MORE SEX! He even controls how much water she drinks, and it’s barely any.

Saxon tells her all the way through the book that she has to talk to him, has to tell him everything, but he hides huge secrets from her.

The town that ‘looks’ after their women don’t try to help her at all. Everyone in the town sees her struggling to do two jobs with her babies, it’s even mentioned in one of the other books. NO ONE HELPS HER!! Ignore all the spiel about the town looking after women, it’s called being a nice person when you see someone struggling in life to help them!!! The only reason the author did it that way is so Saxon can swoop in and save her.

Sorry I know I ranted but in parts I hated this book. Its abuse and control. Nothing more. It’s actually put me off reading anymore of the series.

I have not read any of the previous books in the Haven, Texas series, but this one is the fifth book and can be read as a standalone.

Aspen has always had to look after herself after her flighty mother had other ideas than that of supporting her daughter. However, that changed recently and she stepped up to the plate to help Aspen out with her twin baby boys. Living in a rundown cabin in the woods out of town is not easy but her work at the local diner brings her in contact with enigmatic Saxon.

Saxon can’t seem to get the timid Aspen out of his head and when one too many times he steps in to rescue her, feelings become unraveled. Little did Aspen know Saxon’s demanding exterior was a doorway into his truth. When her mother lets her down again, Saxon is there for her.

I’m not really a fan of BDSM but this was gently covered and not overly hardcore. I didn’t realise it was a BDSM book before I started reading and usually nowadays, I would have put the book down. However, there was something that kept me invested in reading this, especially the sexy alpha Saxon. There were some wonderful supporting characters that made the book as well such as hilariously grumpy Renard.

I enjoyed this and even with the BDSM aspect had me thinking this was 3.5 stars, the ending made me move this up to four stars rating.

I'm so happy to see that we finally get Joel's story!! He's been in the books before but always as a secondary character. He was mysterious and I wanted him to get his own HEA!!! Enter Aspen! She's trying to make her way in life with twin boys and a mother who could care less about her or her grandkids. Joel has never wanted to have anyone in his life but something about Aspen and her boys calls to him. I loved how the storyline went. It kept me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next. Aspen's mother is just............well, you need to get the book and read it to see what I mean! Now, I need Keira and Julian's story! (and Joel's brother) Great story and I really loved it!

I have to say I have never read any of the other Haven, Texas series before so Saxon's Soul was my very first one. It did not disappoint. Although I did not have a backstory of the other characters I didn't feel like I was missing anything, this was a story about Joel and Aspen and their romance.

I will have to pick up the other books to catch up and then continue on. You have a lifetime reader now!

The couple: Saxon and Aspen

Romance genre: bdsm
Series: Haven, Texas
Length: 257 pages

Plot: Saxon (or Joel, as nobody calls him) owns the local bdsm club and is well-known and very successful. So when Aspen, a single mother to 6-month-old twins and a waitress at the diner, comes to his attention, it seems like a mismatch. But Aspen needs help, and Saxon needs to be needed. At first, he just wants to make sure she's okay (he tells himself), but then, she stumbles into a job at his restaurant and their lives become more intertwined.

Commentary: This story has a trope that I enjoy - a plucky, resourceful single mother with a terrible family makes do with what she has until she is rescued by a rich guy who never wanted a family but can't imagine life without them now. Aspen was adorably confused over Saxon's attention - who can blame her? Her mother was a piece of work and so was her children's other grandmother. She didn't really have anyone. Except when Saxon was gone and she needed help, she found that she actually did have a lot of people on her side. Also, the scenes in the pool were really hot.

Next book in the series: Mastered by Malone

BDSM romance

No plot spoilers
No potential triggers
There are some errors that irritated but didn't kill the book.
The characterisation is strong, with the lead characters opening up enough to allow the reader to form a connection.
However, I frequently wanted to shake Aspen. I lost count of the amount of times she said she was sorry, there have to be dozens and dozens she utters the words.
Saxon was more relatable, with disclosures about his past and family.
I felt the D/s element was a bit overworked, I do understand the principles of the power exchange but it seems to me that the author keeps the female lead a little too naive in her novels.
I have to say that the constant use of 'pet' and 'good girl's etc. is annoying and there are a couple of parts I felt were just on the right side of coercion where safe, sane and consensual were in doubt. All in the name of 'helping' her and used as a vehicle to push the storyline forward. Whatever happened to just talking?
Anyway, the plotline is engaging but I began to feel it was getting repetitive halfway through the book and the balance between show and tell was out of whack for a while. Then it was suddenly moved forward to the last few chapters when everything happens all at once.
There are numerous BDSM themed sex scenes and plenty of swearing.
If you are a fan of the genre I have no problem recommending the series but would advise reading from the beginning to obtain the best reading experience.

I started this story and immediately felt badly for Aspen. When Saxon entered the picture, all I could think was please help this woman. Then I discovered she had 6 month old twins and a craptastic mother.

This is Joel and Aspen's story. It seems as though these books can be read as stand-alones. There were some references to other couples, but not knowing their backstory did not take away from this book.

Aspen stood on her own because she had no expectations that anyone would help her. Leaning on Saxon was one of the hardest things she had to do. Saxon helping her take care of her babies was the sweetest thing.

Saxon owned the BDSM club in Haven, and it was based on a community that supported different lifestyles. Aaron's accidental entry into Saxon's life served to break down his walls.

This book took a turn toward the end when it introduce some intrigue that in which Saxon was involved, as well as some intrigue involving Aspen. She really got to see the town pull together.

This series has a lighter BDSM element and is more focused on the romance, sense of acceptance, sense of community, and desire to help lost souls.

Saxon’s Soul is the fifth book in the Haven, Texas series, but can be read as a stand alone. When Saxon sees Aspen in trouble, he rushes in to help, and fixes things as he sees fit. Aspen, used to taking care of herself since she was a child, is shocked to find she’s drawn the attention of Saxon, and he seems genuinely interested in her and her boys. When her world starts to fall apart, Saxon is there to step in, if only she will follow his rules. Aspen unlocks a side of Saxon that few have seen before, but when emotions are mixed into their arrangement, will she get burned?

Oh. My. Goodness! If I could give a book more than five stars, I totally would win this book! Saxon and Aspen have won my heart! I have been looking at this series for a while now, and I’m so happy that I finally started with this book! Now I will be going back and starting from the beginning, but I loved that I never felt lost while reading this book. Saxon, oh Saxon, he captured my heart right from the very beginning! I loved how protective he was of Aspen and her boys, I loved how quickly he just inserted himself into their lives, and I loved his passion, patience, and dominance! Aspen was so independent, strong, but missing so much from her life, like comfort, security, and love. Those boys meant absolutely everything to her, but I loved that this town, her friendships, and Saxon slowly entered her heart, too! I loved watching her go from timid and shy to a protective bear at other times, and I loved watching her acceptance of help from friends shine through. This book was just lovely! I definitely teared up a few times, my heart was overflowing, and I loved some of the background drama going on, too! I loved it!

I do usually read whole series, but this one was just too good not to post out of order. Saxon’s Soul by Laylah Roberts.

“Many believed he didn’t possess a heart. Of what he would demand, possess, claim… If she was his. Aspen had been kicked down so many times, she wondered how she found the energy to get back up. The only light in her life were her little boys. They kept her going. They were all she had time for. All she needed or wanted … So then why couldn’t she get the enigmatic, sexy, dominant Saxon out of her mind? Why did she wake in the middle of the night with dreams of him touching her, taking her… Loving her. Impossible.

Yaaaaaaas. So, if you read this series as a whole, Saxon is a recurring character who is just adorably devious all the time. He’s the owner of the town’s BDSM club which just adds to his appeal. But what brings this man to his knees. TWIN BOYS. I mean, seriously. Is there nothing sexier than a man taking care of a baby? Especially when the mother is our damsel in distress. Aspen was sweet and loving and the most perfect mother. But Saxon definitely stole the show and our hearts. A great read.

I have read every book in this series and Saxon's Soul is my favorite.
It brings up a whirlwind of emotions and events that pulls at your
heartstrings.Saxon and Aspen have damaged past that they have
not delt with but which shaped their futures.Saxon is used to being
obeyed until he comes up against Aspen's independent, stubborn
nature.Saxon is not looking for a relationship but like all the men
in Haven,he takes Aspen under his care.I loved the soft, caring side
of Saxon especially when he introduced Aspen to her submissive
nature. He was her kryptonite and she soon found herself addicted to
him,but would he leave her like everyone else in her life had done.
Saxon's feelings for Aspen surprise him and for the first time in
his life,he can see a future with her.Firstly,he has to gain her trust
and accept responsibility for her future happiness.Aspen was no
shrinking violet, she was feisty and proud after years of looking
after herself and her young family. She struggled letting go of
her emotions to Saxon but the freedom lifted her soul. This book
was touching, tender with scorching hot sex scenes. The author is
not only well versed in the BDSM lifestyle but also handles the
complexity of the characters expertly. The beauty in this book
lies within the simplicity of each and every page.

A Submissive in Waiting

This is my first read of a Laylah Roberts book and hey I will be reading many more, oh so good! I was drawn in on the very first page of this amazing read. Beautifully written storyline with a superb, suspenseful plot! Fabulous characters that you can only but like and relate too. I only wish I could have read the first 4 of the Haven, Texas Series. The townsfolk of Haven just pull you into their loving family! The slow burn between Saxon and Aspen was oh so palpable in this magnificent book!
Every time Aspen sees Saxon in the diner she works at she turned into a blubbering idiot! She’s feisty but beaten down at the moment trying to raise her twin boys! Joel Saxon is the owner of a BDSM club in Haven Texas and also a big Bad Dom and total control freak! Is Aspen too naive and innocent for Saxon’s dark proclivities? I just loved grumpy Renard the chef, I laughed so much at his angry antics!
This is a book that you simply must read and that I can highly recommend.

I enjoyed this installment of the series. The physical aspect of the relationship does not happen until later in the book which I always appreciate especially in a power exchange romance because I like to feel like the characters would care and trust each other to take that step.

Overall I did like Saxon. There were a few things he demanded that had me on the edge on whether I would like him or not but the overall scale tipped into his favor. I will mention the two aspects I didn't like behind the spoiler tag

Good, but kind of fizzled at the end.

Joel Saxon, Dom and club owner ingratiated himself into desparate Aspen Lane and her twin son's lives. It starts out great. The plot is terrific, you really feel Aspen's emotions and desparation, you love the alpha hero swooping in to save her, we get backstory on everyone, the plot builds, and then the villain just gets taken out quietly and easily. Poof! Bye, bye.

We're introduced to two new characters but they and their story go nowhere. (I'm assuming they're in a later book.) There's a gratuitous sex scene at the end that I think the author added as a happy note at the end, but frankly I just kind of glossed over it. I would've preferred maybe another baby, maybe their wedding, just something bigger. Sorry.

This is a beautifully written story and I was drawn in from the beginning. Jason didn’t want a wife or kids but he felt a draw to Aspen. He wanted to protect her and her kids so that just didn’t make sense to him. Aspen doesn’t know how she gets through the day because she has had so many disappointments in her life but she has to for her twin boys. They are the light of her life and everything she needs or wants but she can’t get the dominant Jason Saxon out of her head. Can Jason prove to her that he is not going to abandon her like everyone else in her life? Will Aspen succumb to his dark desires? I highly recommend this book!

Aspen has her hands full between working, looking after her twin boys and trying to keep her mother from disrupting her life. The last things she needs is to try to fit Saxon and his alpha male tendencies into her life.

Joel Saxon is the owner of a BDSM club who never thought he would want a relationship or children. Every time he sees Aspen he is drawn to her feisty personality and knows that she is a true submissive and now all he has to do is convince her that they belong together.

This is my first story by this author but it definitely won’t be my last. Hot and heartwarming this story doesn’t disappoint.

Missed the interaction of characters from previous books in the series

This was my least favourite of the series. I think it's because it concentrated on the BDSM acts themselves rather than the characters. All the other books in the series had great interaction between characters from previous books in the series to make it cohesive and I felt a lack of this here.

I also could not believe that Joel performed these acts to secure complete dependency and trust in him. Surely he would want to empower a woman who had self doubt issues? I found him totally selfish and Aspen far too needy.

Loved the story of Jason and Aspen and how he never wanted a wife nor family and how she was always looking to be left again. The Dom in Jason caused him to want to protect her and her twin babies and along the way he realized he loved them and wanted them in his life. Aspen has a hard time accepting the fact that he is not going to leave her like everyone else has. There are a few other side stories in this book and it makes for a good and interesting read. I would highly recommend this as a great read.

Heartwarming BDSM romance

I have read Laylah Roberts other series but somehow have missed the Haven, Texas series. After reading Saxon’s Soul the 5th book in the series, which worked well as a stand alone, I definitely will be picking up the previous books in this series. I loved Aspen and Saxon(Joel) together as a couple as they had extraordinary chemistry, and babies Jamie and Caleb were so cute. I felt the plot moved well and I enjoyed how Aspen opened herself up to BDSM and how they both opened to the possibilities of love.

I am volunteering to leave a review of this ARC book. My second book by Ms. Roberts. Aspen is a waitress, raising her twin boys in a diner in Haven Texas. Joel is the owner of the BDSM club in town. She is definitely attracted to him, and he's attracted to her. He's afraid she won't be able to deal with his lifestyle, she's an innocent. She dreams about him, naughty dreams! Ms. Roberts drew me into the lives of Saxon and Aspen. I was a goner from the beginning of the book. I had fingers and toes crossed for an HEA! I will be going back to read the series!

Saxon sees more than anyone else about others, especially Aspen. He is not looking for anything long-term. Aspen is not even looking, she is a single mom looking after her mom and twin boys. He gets a bigger glimpse into Aspen and now thinks she is his to look after, but not to keep. Absolutely fascinating tale of a new sub, who knows nothing of the dom/sub life. She is gown what it is like to trust, she still trusts that everyone will leave her. Can she trust in HEA, Saxon can deliver if she will accept. A great read

Saxon Not Only Finds His Soul, But His Heart Too

Aspen is living a life of Hell. She's a single mother of twins and her mother is useless. Saxon met Aspen at a restaurant when she spilled whiskey on him. I loved seeing the man behind the club. There is more depth to him and patience. Aspen intrigues him. He wants to help her but she's worse than a prickly pear. This is their story. I loved this book. The story unfolds in such a way I don't want to stop reading I have to know what is going to happen next. Now I can't wait to read the last book.

Aspen and Saxon

This is a very good, well written, D/s romance. Aspen has twin 6 month old sons and her mother to care for when her car breaks down on the way to her waitressing job. She did not want help or to depend on anyone. Saxon tries to help her and make her life better. Aspen did not know much about BDSM but was curious.. Saxon knew she was a sub but was not sure he should be the one to train her but didn’t want anyone else to train her. Read how she comes to trust him and he finds he does want a family.

I love this author and this is a brillant example of her brillant work. And I hope that there will be more from Haven. Aspen is perfect for Saxon. There are plenty of hot spicy sexy BDSM scenes and some spankings. There is also the slow revealing of two lost and lonely people. Even though this is part of a series it can be read as a standalone but I recommend that all the wonderful books are read. A well written and interesting story.

Wanted

Aspen brings out something Saxon can't explain. He wants to care for her and make sure she is safe and happy. Aspen is leary of Saxon and dreads what he will in return for all he is helping her with. When he shows her through actions how he wants her and that she's wanted for her whole mind, body and soul can she let her guard down to let love in? Can she trust his words and actions?

A woman who wants absolutely nothing to do with the bdsm lifestyle but soon learns that it is exactly where she is meant to be. A man who is so deeply ingrained in the lifestyle he owns a bdsm club and never touches inexperienced subs or brats. Gah! It was so fun to follow this journey. I will also say I am not typically one to enjoy single parent tropes but this story has my teeth aching it was so sweet and heartwarming. As per usual, highly recommend.

I have loved this whole series. We have gotten to see bits of Saxon throughout the series so it was nice to finally have a book featuring him. He makes a great hero. Aspen is an amazing character. She has a lot of strength to survive everything in her life. Saxon and Aspen make a great pair and I really enjoyed their story.

Well written intriguing BDSM romance that kept me involved.

Love a book that has you wanting the characters to work through all their anxieties and doubts. Saxon is the kind of Dom that cares but doesn't want anyone knowing that he does. Ashen is a overwhelmed single mom of twins who doesn't know she is submissive. Their HEA isn't guaranteed until you reach the end.
