A young prince, an evil wizard, and a city that no longer seems to care. Cast out from the palace, Nellie survives in the streets of Saardam with the poor and destitute and a dragon whose behaviour she can't control, but is the key to finding the last member of the royal family. The pompous Regent is hell-bent on finding the person who has killed his court advisor and he has decided the dragon is guilty. If he doesn't find a culprit, his main source of money is at stake. The guards comb the city. It's only a matter of time before they find Nellie. A terrible mishap caused by the dragon puts Nellie's friend and a number of other innocent people in prison. Nellie can no longer run and hide. She concocts the most daring escape plan ever, but in gathering help to carry it out, she makes discoveries that may change the future of the city.
Again, a well written, pleasant surprise from Patty Jensen! Truly enjoy her lead character, Nellie is incredible. Driven, determined, having aged wisely, she is a tribute to sageness! Well done Patty, on to book 3.
As I follow the stories of Dragonspeaker, I am once again in awe of Patty Jansen's skills as a story teller. Reading the story caused me a little suspense. At every turn I was worried about one person or another getting caught. I was amazed they could keep such a large group of people out of sight for so long. Their plans were thwarted at every turn so when they planned on escaping on a Monks orders ship, I was worried if everyone could pull off their part of the escape. They ended up with extra people in their party - some I was even surprised about. I can't wait to get to the next book to read the continuing saga of this little group and see if they get enough support to take back their city.
This story follows on pretty much from where the first book left off and is much more fast paced. There is a lot more plot and some more character development from Nellie which I really liked. Personally I did find my attention wavering a bit in the middle as we kept going over the same points and situations with just a few differences however, I still enjoyed the book. The ending was really good and I can't wait to read the third book and see how this series wraps up!
Nellie is not your typical fantasy heroine. She is 50 years old and a kitchen maid amongst other things. She has strong beliefs of right and wrong. For now the church is corrupt. The regent is on a witch hunt. Nellie is hiding a dragon and being accused of murder. Extremely well written. Follows on the the first book. Cant wait to read the next one.
2nd book read right after finishing #1 - it's been 4 yrs since I read it but I remember not liking it as much as #1 - again it was mostly due to some of her choices - things I never would have chosen, The conclusion left me not sure about the 3rd book as they again left it on a cliff hanger, maybe..
I listened to this book and found that The narration of this book made it so hard to listen to and ruined the story. I would try to read it in book form but I will hear the awful narrated in my head. Oh well- waste of time. So glad it’s done!
This is a good palette cleanser between more complicated books. Our protagonist, Nellie, is older, making this unique to most other fantasy. There's not a lot of action until the end and even then it's pretty tame. Still it's an enjoyable read.
Nellie is having quite the adventures in this series. The dragon is priceless and not at all what people think. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
I loved this book, it was really great. However, I felt that the title of the book did reveal the outcome of the main plot twist in the book, which was a great shame. Apart from that, it was an excellent story.
