I saw Mary raise her middle finger ever so slightly from the table in Jackson’s direction, and he got the meaning. Lee’s mouth twitched with a smile. Apparently, Mary and Jackson had their own form of nonverbal communication they were comfortable with.
I had to admit, Mary was not only a hoot, but also a bright woman. The fact that she looked like the mother in The Golden Girls TV show and wore ridiculously thick black owl eyeglasses gave her an edge at disarming people. That she also held a private investigator license and was a co-owner of the firm boggled my mind.
Declan Murphy could be a weak spot for me. Handsome, smart, and funny—the deadly triad.
“Mr. Clarke, unfortunately, trouble seems to find me,” she said as she pushed her glasses up her nose… She opened her bag, and as she took each item out, she identified it. “On my keychain, an alarm to wake the dead. Next to the alarm is pepper spray. This can is hornet spray, and this one is hair spray. Both will blind and choke you. Here is my stun gun and Taser, and fortunately, I’ve only had to use the Taser once,” she said, looking over the items. “No gun?” I asked, intrigued by this eccentric. “Of course. But you asked what was in my bag. The gun is at my back. No need to alarm the public,” she said, eyeing her collection with pride. Who was this lady? A senior citizen 007?
“Alex, before I sign any papers, I need the people who are most involved written on a piece of paper. When I get home, I will separate those names and place each into a small jar and close the lids. Then, I light a candle in front of each to shine a light on each person. I’ll wave a bundle of sage around the jars to cleanse the area. I always say a prayer for guidance. Then, I wait. If any candle immediately dies out in front of any jar, then I’ll know that person shouldn’t touch my paintings. It’s a proven fact, Alex,” she said with a nod. I sat, unable to decide if she was pulling my leg or being serious. I opted for clarification. “Seriously?” “As a heart attack. And, at my age, you don’t use that term lightly,” she replied, easing the grip she had on her handbag.
My Review:
Maybe it was the shocking and earth-shattering numeral reached on my last birthday, but I seem to be on a roll of my favorite book characters being of the more mature/aged variety. But I will confess, I tittered and smirked like an adolescent at the thought of a tiny yet feisty and resourceful elderly woman repeatedly twitching her middle finger to communicate her pique with an irritating and mouthy coworker. Snort. I adored the character of Mary and her infamous handbag/arsenal. While also a cracker-jack investigator, she provided considerable levity and humor into the complex and stimulating case of murder and art-theft. The plot was cunningly clever. The writing was engaging and continually taunted and teased my curiosity with well-balanced and well-crafted storylines, amusing observations, a cleverly contrived frame, and intriguing and questionable characters. I am eager to see what incredibly unexpected yet timely item Mary next retrieves from her voluminous pocketbook. She was like a miniature and edgy version of a senior Mary Poppins.

What a ride! 😎
Liked this book a lot. Interesting, well-paced and intelligently written suspense. Research done well. Respect!
Highly unlikable villain character. Despite an odd and slightly cliffysh ending, he got what he deserved. Fucking manipulator and cheater.
I hope the 'twist' will be solved in the next book.
Mary wasn't present a lot. It's a shame, I flove this woman 😍.
Dalia - loved her. Smart, strong, confident. She had her weaker sides, but her poker face was good 😎.
I mentioned in my review to the previous book, that I love how this author writes her female characters - her heroines have a working connection between their brain and vagina -> no hormonal blushing, imbecile's giggling, embarrassing klutziness! They speak confidence, they gain respect, they don't transform into the oestrogen brain-dead caricatures.
Dalia was a great character!
Her romantic relationship with Declan, a police detective, wasn't very prominent, but believable and real. Declan respected her as a person and admired her professionalism.
The book ends with a promise to a further investigation of the murder case, which is brilliantly done in Karma Never Loses An Address
But the ending was still almost satisfying to me (since I couldn't stand the male suspect).

This was quite the thought provoking book as the team of investigators are looking into whether the unlikable and underhand husband is a murderer and/or art thief. I really hoped he had and would get his comeuppance and without giving anything away he does...but the way in which it happens is quite sublime and I loved it.
I liked the insurance investigation element of this thriller. It's not something I've read much of in my previous crime reading so it added an extra bit for me and I really enjoyed it.
It's a fast paced thriller and I read it quite quickly. There are so many twists and turns. I liked the dynamic of Dalia from the insurance team and Detective Declan Murphy and would actually like to see more of these two. And I have to take a moment to discuss my favourite character from the book, Mary. Showing that life doesn't end when you get old, this lady has all the latest gizmo's, knows how to handle herself and is (quite literally sometimes) a law unto herself. I want to be her when I grow up. I would love to see more of her too.

Opportunistic Attorney Alexander Clarke couldn't understand,let alone believe how swiftly his perfect life had crumbled apart around him. Everything had been going to plan,he had helped Samantha Bennington win a bitterly contested legal battle over her inheritance from her late father. Then he had married the woman and was using all his powers of persuasion to convince her to put her art collection that was worth thirty millions dollars up for auction. Only while he was away on business for a few days,Samantha and the paintings mysteriously disappeared. During the ensuing investigation, blood splatter was discovered under the freshly painted wall of the room in which two of the paintings were hung. Now Alex is the prime suspect for his wife's murder and they seem to have him tried and convicted even before he has got anywhere near the courtroom. Why are they so convinced that he is guilty? What about Samantha's drug addicted sister and her convicted brother? Both were furious over their loss in court and had more than enough reason to hate Samantha.

This gripping thriller has short snappy chapters that alternate between Alex and Dalia Grey. Dalia was an ex ADA who had been hired by Cillian O'Reilly and Jackson Evans to help them find out what has happened to the missing paintings for the insurance company. It's wasn't their job to prove if Alex was guilty or not but once she had gotten over her initial reservations about working on the case,the investigator in Dalia couldn't help getting caught up in the investigation. Well,I say investigation but it was more along the lines of,all the evidence points towards Alex so he is obviously guilty. The problem was that I didn't feel any sympathy for Alex because from the very first page,he was such an unlikable character. But just because you are a conniving opportunist doesn't mean you are a killer. The question was if Samantha wasn't dead then where was she and the paintings? And if Alex had killed her then where was her body?
I really enjoyed this well written enthralling mystery,there was a number of twists and turns and the story kept me guessing right up to the unexpected reveal towards the end of the book. Out of all the vivid,realistic characters in this book,my absolute favourite was no nonsense,feisty,ninety year old Aunt Mary and her handbag of mystery, what an absolutely wonderful character.Although this is the second book in the series and there was references to events from the previous book,it can be read and enjoyed as a stand alone. I hope that the last sentence of this book is hinting that the author is planning to write a sequel to this story. And if she is then I look forward to reading it in the hopefully not too distant future.

This is a really cunning and clever mystery with a cast of some truly ghastly but fascinating characters! There are, of course, the good guys too and these are equally as interesting, particularly Dalia, the insurance investigator, and Tyler, the cop.
The story begins and ends from the point of view of Alex, our main suspect, but most of it is narrated by Dalia. She gives us an insight into the complicated business of insurance for highly valuable items, and with her sharp, incisive mind she contributes greatly to the police investigation too. She’s very likeable, down-to-earth and engaging as our main protagonist.
It’s enlightening to see the world through Alex’s eyes too. He’s not trying to impress anyone, just be brutally self-serving. He and Marley and Ashton Bennington are the main suspects, but how to determine which one of them perpetrated the crime, or was it all of them? Or was it someone else altogether?
There’s a great sense of place in the novel. The settings range from the courtroom, to the sumptuous residence of the Benningtons, to prison interview rooms, to various atmospheric sites were the team conduct their investigations. Each has loads of atmosphere and detail.
There’s co-operation and confrontation in the novel, loyalty and betrayal, cruelty and kindness and hatred and love. There are plenty of shocks in store for the reader but not enough to destroy your faith in humanity. Even though it seems unlikely at times that justice will fully out in this complicated case, you’re aware that there’s a strong force for good at work.
The plot keeps you guessing all the way through this gripping and highly enjoyable novel.

I really enjoyed this story and after seeing the cover and the blurb I knew I would be in for a treat – it is a great thriller with plenty of mystery thrown in!
The book is well written and it flows very well, it started off a little bit slow but it soon picked up and after a few chapters I found the plot to be quite addictive and finished the book in the afternoon after I had started it in the morning. It was one of those books that I was thinking about after I’d finished it – and the number of books I read that made it stand out for me.
The characters were likeable and relatable for me and I enjoyed that. 4 stars from me for this one – I really enjoyed it! Highly recommended!!

This is a crime novel from a very different perspective. We follow the story from two points of view: one an investigator from an insurance firm looking into the disappearance of some major artworks, and the other the husband of the missing woman and suspected of her murder.
We see how pre-conceived notions can influence an investigation, and how difficult it is to shake suspicion.
This is an interesting take on the genre, following along from the outside of law enforcement. And a peek into what seems clear from one side, is not necessarily the truth.

This is a well paced look at what happens when an investigation reaches a dubious conclusion. Ms. McGillick 'paints a picture' of circumstantial evidence in a case with a missing wife and millions of dollars in stolen art.
The characters are well drawn, especially Mary, my personal favorite, and you will find yourself quickly turning the pages to see what the characters do and say next. This one is alot of fun.
I'm looking forward to reading more in this series to follow these characters as they take on more interesting cases.

Facing a Twisted Judgment is a police procedural / legal / private investigator crime thriller. It is the second in a series, but can be read as a stand-alone book (as I did) with no issues at all.
The story is mainly told from the viewpoint of Dalia who has given up a legal career and promptly fallen into helping investigate an art theft which may potentially also be a murder. Dalia is efficient and curious, and makes a great centre character around which to run an investigative plot. Her personal life is peripherally involved too, but never takes centre stage as the focus remains tightly on the case (although not necessarily the part of the case that they are supposed to be focusing on!).
We also get intermittent chapters from the inner life of main suspect Alex Clarke, giving the reader insights into the case that the characters don’t have; which is especially interesting when all roads seem to be leading in the same direction. Yet even with this extra help, I still didn’t manage to figure out the solution before the reveal!
Personally I loved the team of Cillian, Jackson, Mary, Lee and Tyler. Their personal and professional dynamics are entertaining and I would happily read about anything this little group of experts investigated.
The reveal was my only minor disappointment, in that after an intricate and complex case, the shocking reveal seemed somewhat rushed and abrupt. I would have liked a more gradual climax to mesh with the pacing of the rest of the book. The final twist, however, left us on a cliffhanger leading on to the next book in the series, with promise of more Mary, which can only be a good thing!
Recommended for all crime fans looking for a new crime series with a Kinsey Millhone feel.
“I have contacted six museums and spoken with their people,” she smiled as if she had the plans for world peace at her fingertips. “I’m going to lend the paintings to the museums, so they can place them on exhibition. In doing this, the museum will be responsible for insurance and security. And, because of this, I can execute some type of legal loophole about the estate taxes that would hit me,” Samantha told me.
Had someone inverted my world? In what universe would someone do such a thing without talking to the person you were marrying in less than twenty-four hours.
I’d reached a crossroad. If I argued with her, she might want to rethink her plans to marry me and think we might not be compatible after all. Or I could wait, and once married, I could catch her in a vulnerable position and make her see things my way. Yes, that was the better plan.

The reveal was my only minor disappointment, in that after an intricate and complex case, the shocking reveal seemed somewhat rushed and abrupt. I would have liked a more gradual climax to mesh with the pacing of the rest of the book. The final twist, however, left us on a cliffhanger leading on to the next book in the series, with promise of more Mary, which can only be a good thing!
Recommended for all crime fans looking for a new crime series with a Kinsey Millhone feel.
“I have contacted six museums and spoken with their people,” she smiled as if she had the plans for world peace at her fingertips. “I’m going to lend the paintings to the museums, so they can place them on exhibition. In doing this, the museum will be responsible for insurance and security. And, because of this, I can execute some type of legal loophole about the estate taxes that would hit me,” Samantha told me.

My usual reads are chick lit so I jumped at the chance to read something different to my usual and I am so glad I did.
This is the second in a series however like I did, you can also read this as a standalone. I never felt once that I had missed out on anything from the first book. This was my first K. J. McGillick and it will not be my last, I have already planned to go back and read the first book.
This thriller, mystery book was a page turner keeping me guessing the whole way through. Each chapter jumps between two voices, Dalia Grey who works for Bristol's who insures a collection of paintings that have been in the Bennington family and recently owned by Samantha Bennington. The other character is Alexander Clarke newly married to Samantha and also her attorney who helped her win the art collection through a bitter legal battle with her siblings.
As the Synopsis states Samantha disappears along with the art collection and Alex is at the top of the suspect list.
I really enjoyed following the team and I felt pulled into the investigation along with them finding out whether Alex was the murderer and thief.
Of course I won't give away the ending but just to say I really liked the way it played out however the tiniest part of me felt it was a little rushed and I could have quite easily have kept reading a little more.
All the characters were written well especially on the investigation team, I liked reading how well they worked together trying to solve the puzzle but keeping in some light comedy which I enjoyed. I also liked reading the relationship between Dalia and Declan the Detective, it was nice to have just a little romance added into the mix. It was interesting to read Alex's point of view as you don't always get to read the other side of the investigation, although the more I read of him the more I disliked him, there was no sympathy for him during the book.
Of course my favourite character throughout was Mary, What a lady! I really enjoyed reading her scenes, what a fantastic quirky character to write, she deserves her own series!

I've read a few books by this author before, so I jumped at the chance to be on the blog tour for this one. I was not disappointed.
The story is told in first person, mainly from Dalia's viewpoint (she's the former ADA who is looking for a change of direction - and she visits friends only to get sucked into a mystery that could provide the very change she needs, both on the job front and romantically).
Occasionally, there are some chapters giving Alex's viewpoint - as the main suspect, he offers the reader a chance to take in the facts, and unravel the clues for themselves. A proper "whodunnit"! For me, this was a treat of a book.
The characters here are lively - trust me - they will pull you in and engage with you as though you are a member of the investigation team yourself. I LOVE THAT!
Dalia joins Cillian and his team, and works closely with the police where a romance is in the offing, but never takes you out of the story. Watch out for Mary - she is a star and, even in her nineties, she is totally involved in the case - she knows somebody who knows somebody who knows someone who can ... if you get my drift. (Some might say she's running the whole thing ;) - just don't tell Cillian or Jackson I said that!) Her relationship with Jackson will bring a smile to your face - she is a no-nonsense lady, armed with an array of "hand gestures" reserved for him in particular.
My only criticism is that everyone is maybe a little too good-looking, rather like a glossy pilot show to attract your attention, but that aside, it's a fast-paced and entertaining mystery. It's well-written and although I did work out the who, where and how long before the reveal, it was engaging and interesting watching the team come to their conclusions.

What happens when tunnel vision clouds a police investigation? Is it true that once you are labeled a person of interest you really are the prime suspect? Can you trust the legal system? Probably not.
After a bitterly contested legal battle over inherited property, the hard-won art collection and its owner Samantha Bennington disappear. Both have vanished without a trace.

Wow!!!! What a book! I was completely intrigued from the beginning until the very end!!!!

She loves a puzzle, and if there was a case that was a puzzle, it’s definitely this one. Samantha Bennington has disappeared along with art totaling around one hundred thirty million. Her husband, Alex, is becoming the prime suspect. There are other scenarios. Did she leave on her own with the art to start another life? Did her drug addicted sister or her brother, a convicted felon have something to do with her disappearance? With Alex’s questionable reputation becoming the center of attention, the noose is tightening around his neck.
The synopsis just scratches the surface of the book. The writing is superb, and the characters are some of the most complex I have come across. The story is told from both Dalia and Alex’s POV, and that adds such depth to the plot. Every time I thought I knew who it was, I was proven wrong. The twist that kept coming certainly kept me guessing.
If you want a thought provoking book that will keep you reading long into the night, you can’t go wrong with this one. Just when you think it’s over, you are in for an ending you will never see coming!!!!

Okay so Facing A Twisted Judgment is 100% a mystery, so I'm going to give a bare bones description because of that fact, just so I don't give any clues away. There's Attorney Alexander Clarke, who helped Samantha Bennington win a legal battle, then married her. Already sounds shady right? Well, while he's away, she disappears with the paintings that he convinced her to put up for auction. More shade, and now guess who the prime suspect is? Yep him, which is not hard to believe, and yet, hard to believe, because there's a cast of secondaries make up of the good, the bad, and the oh so drugged out ugly. Obviously, this is a journey made up of twists & turns to make the best of readers drop the meanest of f-bombs like a sailor, and boy did I, because I was suspicious of everyone, but the amazing Aunt Mary carrying her amazingly mysterious handbag, with her feisty 90 year old self. So yeah, K.J. McGillick killed it again with another story that kept me on the edge of my seat yelling out my guesses as the story progressed, and by the end, hints to another story which I so hope there is! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This is a really good read. The story is well written and it is evident that the author understands the law well. The detail is however, not overwhelming and doesn’t stop the flow of the story.
Alexander Clarke is a greedy man, who uses women to increase his bank balance. Money is his number one priority, so when his wealthy wife disappears with millions of pounds of her treasured art collection, he becomes the police’s prime suspect.
Dalia Grey is renown for her art knowledge and is bought in by the insurance company to try and retrieve the stolen art work. Her job is purely about the art work but she can’t help but get drawn into the case of the missing woman Samantha Bennington.
Will her and the teams interference in the case, help or hinder law enforcement and just what is Alexander Clarke hiding?

This was a slow read for me because there was so much detail about art theft and art history. There were also many different characters involved with different jobs trying to catch a killer. The police were focused on one particularly nasty suspect while the art investigators had many other avenues to pursue.
I thought the novel was very well laid out and as the tension intensified everyone seemed to be following their own agenda. I had a difficult time accepting that Mary, an elderly investigator continually seemed to have the energy and stamina of a thirty-year-old - but she did pull off some humorous pranks several times that added levity.
If you enjoy complicated who-done-its, this is a book you should definitely grab.

I liked the characters and their 'personalities' in the book. They were comical at times even though this is a mystery book. What I didn't like is the cliff hanger to the next book. I don't like them in books, and I don't care if it is a series. This is one story in a series, it should end and another one begins. The storyline is a bit wordy, but it gets the point across. I did enjoy the story just not the ending so much. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from Booksprout but also purchased it.

Facing A Twisted Judgement is a thought-provoking, fast-paced thriller that had me flipping the pages quickly. There is lots of drama to keep the reader guessing and an ending that I never saw coming.
The characters were interesting. And I loved the theme of "guilty until proven innocent," vibe this story had. Every word drove the story forward, and I'm a new fan of K. J. McGillick and her writing.

Cliffhanger ahead...
Facing A Twisted Judgment is the second book in the Lies and Misdirection series. I really enjoyed this book except for the cliffhanger. The characters were well developed and interesting. Mary was the best and was a real character herself! The storyline was well written and had lots of intrigue and twists and turns. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

This book is really good! It started off a bit slow but after a couple of chapters in it really picked up. The ending made me mad but in a good way because I wasn't really expecting it. I hope K. J. Very enjoyable. Love the writing style. Characters are well developed and the plot moves along with very little repetition or superfluous fillers. Keeps you wondering right up to the end. Editing was excellent. This is book 2 in a series and book 1 was every bit as good. I am now reading book 3 and don't want to put it down.

A great read. The plot twists definitely keep the pages turning. And the characters are interesting, complex and lively, especially Mary... I want to BE Mary when I get old. I'm going back and reading every one of this writer's books.

This is a compelling read that is completely engaging. It pulled me in from the beginning and held me to the end! I could not put it down. Great characters and some funny people as well. It makes you worry a bit about the justice system. Very good read!

This is a cleverly written plot that I found very engaging and a page-turner till the very end. I loved the plot and I love this author’s writing technique. The characters are well-rounded and have believable dialogue and actions. A wonderful mystery.

I've read several books written by K.J. McGillick; she is becoming one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to read more of her books.
