Firebringer Take Two: Freedom's Blood & Like Mother, Like Daughters

Rate this book
Ghosts, Vampires, and American History...

Firebringer Take Two combines Steven H. Wilson's vampire tale, FREEDOM'S BLOOD with Phil Giunta's paranormal mystery, LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTERS in the format of the classic double novel (read one story, flip the book over and read the other!).

In LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTERS, fans and new readers will see the return of psychic-medium single mom Miranda Lorensen from Phil's previous novels (Testing the Prisoner and By Your Side)... and this time, she's bringing her daughter. Here's a quick blurb:

After her lover is found murdered during a paranormal investigation, Andrea Lorensen is determined to find the killer--with some help from her lover's ghost. Meanwhile, her mother Miranda travels to Salem, Massachusetts where she reunites with the gentle spirit of a young woman executed for witchcraft in 1692. This time, however, the encounter reveals an astonishing truth about Miranda's past life--a truth that could kill her.

But wait! There's more!

You're a vampire, but you have an unyielding belief in the sanctity of the individual's rights. How do you survive, if you can't take blood without permission? And what do you do when someone offers you his blood... with strings attached? This humorous tale explores the ethics of being a vampire--or even just a creature that's gotta eat--against the background of a developing America. Starting out in Colonial Maryland and carrying on through the 21st Century, FREEDOM'S BLOOD will perhaps amuse, perhaps enrage, and will certainly introduce you to a vampire like none you've ever encountered.

SUPERNATURAL DOUBLE-FEATURE
A two-tale treat for fans of things that go bump in the night -- starting with Steven H. Wilson's appetizer about a vampire gnawing on his ethical dilemma, seasoned with macabre wit; and then serving up Phil Giunta's multi-course, multi-generational entree of ghostly mystery. So sit down, if you dare, to a supernatural double helping, but be forewarned: If you like to read while home alone in the darkness, do so at your peril.

(A note for readers of tender sensibility: Like the TV parental guidelines alphabet says, be aware that these stories are rated MLSV -- M for Mature audiences; L for some salty Language; S for Sexual situations; and V for a bit of non-gratuitous but somewhat-bloody Violence.)

“Freedom’s Blood”

Steven H. Wilson

A triumph of a story putting a delightful spin on vampire myths. Witticism from the main character keeps the reader engaged to find out where he will go or what will happen next. I feel I want to pluck this character out of the story and journey with him as long as I’m not his next entrée. A sequel to this vampire is a must. Steven Wilson can add me as a fan of his work.

“LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTERS”
by Phil Giunta

This is a long-awaited sequel to Miranda Lorensen who appeared in the best-selling novel. “By Your Side.” Miranda’s daughter, Andrea discovers she has the same talent as her mother, who is a renowned psychic and expert on the paranormal. At first, Andrea is frightened by her ability. However, her mother guides her through the psychic experiences the same way any parent would guide a child through a talent.

Phil’s capture of the unique bond between a mother and a daughter is spot-on. Their dialogue and moments spent together are realistic, and I believe the hereditary talent only serves to bring them closer together.

The paranormal scenes are a splendid mix of horror, and ghostly wonder and the reader gets carried away entering into these visions experienced by the mother or the daughter.

Once again, Phil has written a page-turning, eyes-wide-open, paranormal novel. If you have not had the privilege of reading his work, by all means, log on to Amazon and add his novels to your collection. You will not be disappointed.

Like Mother, Like Daughters:

Andrea Lorensen and her mother Miranda have a Lorelei and Rory Gilmore type of relationship - very close and with lots of banter.

The story begins with mother and daughter arriving at Wendy's house, one of Andrea's friends. Wendy had invited them to investigate what she believed was paranormal activity, both inside and outside of her house. As they approach, Miranda begins to have a physical reaction, indicating to her that Wendy is right, paranormal activity does exist there. Wendy greets them, and shows them the house. Miranda leaves Wendy and Andrea alone, to get gear from the car. This is when the adventure begins. Andrea discovers the Wendy she was speaking with is a ghost when she finds Wendy's dead body in the woods.

Phil Giunta writes realistic characters and settings. The reader is with Miranda and Andrea.

I think this is a very good book and I highly recommend it.

I loved the two story in one format. Steve Wilson's "Freedom's Blood" was a fun appetizer. I enjoyed the vampire's exploration of his "moral dilemma." The morgue scene was especially well done. I've been waiting for Phil Giunta's "Like Mother, Like Daughters" since reading his last Miranda Lorenson story. The intertwined stories of her daughter's first psychic experience contrasted with Miranda's revisiting the first ghost she ever met were well crafted and came together beautifully at the end. Although both stories touched on difficult topics (witch trials and rape), Phil handled them very compassionately and I walked away from the story feeling satisfied and pleased about the outcome for all involved. This was a delightful offering from two extremely talented authors.

As for Freedom's Blood; I loved the vampire character in this novella. He was real. Not the romantic "twilight" version of a vampire, but actually a vampire! He has such a personality, sharp wit yet with a hint of human in him still. That is what truly made this such a quick interesting read. I loved that he actually struggled with his version of a moral dilemma. Now that the ground work has been laid out for this character, I can see a series of books coming out with him as the main character. Many years ago I read a vampire series written by Charlaine Harris called The Snookie Stackhouse Novels. What made this series so good was the vampire character in it, along with his human girlfriend Snookie. He was so real in these books, you felt you knew him and that is why I read 9 books! Freedom's Blood has absolutely the same potential, if not greater, then Ms Harris's books! I loved every word. I was right there in the helicopter with him as a bat. Could see the attendant in my mind helping that person on the stretcher while flying to the hospital, yet not know there was a bat/vampire so close. The vampire character portrayed in this books has depth....both dark and a hint of light about him. This is what makes him interesting, fun and a reader longing for more!!! I would absolutely love to see more books with this vampire character in it. The hell with Twilight.......let Freedom's Blood spill out into the bookstores, Kindels and iPad's....I want MORE!!!
Then there was Like Mother, Like Daughters; There was a big problem.................IT ENDED!!!! Just when I didn't think Phil could top his last book, he did. At first I wasn't sure how this was going to go..having the 2 story lines going at the same time, but it worked. Phil kept them separate then joined them, sort of, in the end. Honestly this was his best yet. I am going to cross my fingers right now & hope & pray to sweet baby Jesus that Phil will continue with more stories of Miranda and/or Andrea. I can see a really strong series coming out with these 2 characters.
