Secret Seekers Society and the Beast of Bladenboro follows the young protagonists Hunter Glenn and Elly Ann through an adventure ripe with adversity, paranormal monsters, secret societies, and most haunting of all, a life without their parents. Both siblings suffer emotional struggle from the sudden loss of their parents, as well as their physical journey into a new and strange “home”; an ancient and creepy mansion known only as the Belmonte Estate. The children slowly unravel the secrets of their parents’ true identities, the origin of the strange mansion and their inheritance into an ancient secret society of monster hunters.
Joe lives in Saginaw, Michigan where he has a Bachelor's Degree in Creative Writing through Saginaw Valley State University. Joe has written and is currently self publishing his first novel entitled The Deity Chronicles: Origins.
His recent release, The Secret Seekers Society and the Beast of Bladenboro was released 12/31/12 and had already been a huge success (at least in his eyes lol).
He also dabbles in literary short fiction, and poetry.
When Hunter Glen and his younger sister, Elly Ann, lose their parents they find themselves orphaned and forced to live with their eccentric godfather, Professor Claudio Calenstine, inside of a dark and mysterious Mansion that holds more secrets than the children could ever fathom.
You would think dealing with the untimely death of their parents would be more than enough for the two siblings to deal with, but being locked away in their room by their caretakers under the premise of “safety” concerns and hearing whispers about a “monster” lurking about the Mansion’s labyrinth of rooms sends chills down their spines.
Do they dare escape the comfort of their boarded up room and investigate the creepy mansion in the dead of night? Are they ready to learn of the Mansion’s many secrets, including the origin of the Beast of Bladenboro that has turned the Mansion’s hallways into its own personal hunting grounds? What about their parent’s ties with their new Godfather, who is he, and what is all this talk about a secret society of monster hunters all about anyway?
From my editor: "On a less technical note, the book is an excellent read. The characters are all good and have their own individuality, and the story is very well put together—great imagination and wonderfully described. I feel this is the start of a first-rate series of adventures, and I would love to have the opportunity to work on Hunter and Elly’s future escapades"
On seeing the title I was a bit put off, sounded a bit strange, but I decided to give it a go. And I'm so glad I did. I now totally get the title! As an adult I know all about fairy tales and legends, and part of me has always wanted to believe, just a little bit, that they may be true. This story helped in my quest for belief! The author draws you into the story from the first few pages when you begin to feel sympathy for the 2 main characters - orphaned brother and sister Hunter and Elly. They don't have an easy start to their new lives but quickly gain allies. This may be billed as YA fiction but it is my kind of story, and it shouldn't be overlooked due to a readers age. Give it a chance and I promise you will be as drawn in to the fantasy world as I was. Bring on the next one please!
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. The first thing that I love about it is the title. Who doesn't like secret societies and beasts? The author does a great job of hooking you before you even open the book. It's also a vague enough title that you have no idea what you are really getting into. I like the mystery and intrigue that that causes.
The plot of this book was wonderful. It wasn't predictable and and there weren't a ton of slow moving parts. He did a great job of moving the story along. At the same time, he didn't rush the story either. It's got great balance and enough twists and turns to keep you wanting more. This is the first book in quite a while where I was disappointed when I had to put it down to go do something else.
The characters in this book are relatable and not outlandish in their situations in life. Plus there are enough different characters that just about anyone can find someone to relate to in this book. I loved that the characters were so well developed. They weren't over-developed, which I hate. I didn't have to suffer through pages and pages of what the person wears or what they eat or what their favorite color is. Mr. Hickey does a fantastic job with his character building.
The readability of this book was great. As I said earlier, the pacing was good and the suspense building was wonderful. I think he really nailed it with this book. It's a page turner for sure.
As far as genre goes, anyone who likes fantasy and mystery would love this book. Also, fans of great writing will love this book as well. I can't wait to read the sequel.
Secret Seekers Society and the Beast of Bladenboro by J.L. Hickey is a unique story. Despite it's long title the books is very good. It grabs your attention and keeps it the further you read. There is a secret society and every generation has started at the mansion. It starts here for two orpaned children, Hunter and Ely. Their parents were killed in a tragic air plane accident before anything could be explained. On top of this, a beast, a cryptic beast known as the Beast of Bladenboro has escaped and is a threat to the institute. Will this generation of chil the beast hurt anyone else or en rise to the challenge to be seekers? Will the beast hurt anyone else or will it be contained?
I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review. As soon as I read the synopsis for this book I knew that I would enjoyed it and that I needed to read it. The Secret Seekers Society and the Beast of Bladenboro lived up to my expectations. This book was an easy read because it was so exciting and the imagination was so vivid. I literally could not put the book down because it was that awesome. It reminded me a little bit of Harry Potter in the fact that I can see this book being the next big epic series. The author has started the characters off younger which I liked because if this is a series I like to watch the characters grow and educate themselves. I loved reading about Hunter and Elly . They seem like really intelligent characters and like they will go far in these books. I also loved that Elly was a bookworm, a girl after my own heart. Hunter has an adventurous streak that has already got him in trouble and no doubly will get him in so more. I want to be there to experience this quest or quests with them. We are also introduced to some other characters who I feel will be big parts in future books and I can't wait to see if I am correct. I loved reading this book. I got caught up in the mysterious manor and all the mythical creatures that we became familiarized with. I would recommend this read the kids and adults and anyone who loves the Harry Potter feel to a book. I will definitely be continuing the series. I look forward to learning more about the charcters and what they will soon face.
Secret Seekers Society and the Beast of Bladenboro is an exciting and creative story about two children who learn family of secrets they could never have imagined. From the introductory scenes of the novel, the reader is brought into a world of both familiar mythical creatures and ones new to our imaginative world. Readers are kept on their toes as the Jakobs children explore their new home and learn more about these creatures and the secrets that will forever change their lives. The writing is one for both young adults and adults alike! This very inventive story is an original and well thought out tale that will leave readers eager to read the next installation and to find out what will come of the Jakobs children.
All though this isn't a story that I would normally choose to read...I really enjoyed it! J.L. Hickey writes with so much imagination. Once you start reading plan on finding it hard to put down!I absolutely fell in love with Hunter and Elly, the kids who lost their parents and have to move away from friends and everything they thought they knew of their parents. They know nothing of their new guardian yet they both are thrown into a world with secret passageways to amazing mystical creatures. Their first night at the mansion so many things happen...they meet new people, hear strange noises, and are locked away in their room for days. The story has so many twists and turns. Def a must read!
Thank you to Black Rose Writing for sending me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is such an interesting middle grade series! I love diving into middle grade books because I think they feel lighter somehow (even though there was some pretty dark stuff going on in this novel). I think the lack of teen angst and drama is what makes middle grade so much fun for me.
First of all, I love the paranormal and mystical aspect to this. Magical realism isn't something I've dabbled in too much, but this made me more excited to further explore the genre. We come into the story after Hunter and Elly's parents have died and they are being transported to the home of their godfather. The place is not what they expect, and they quickly learn that what what their idea of "real vs. fake" had previously been was soon about to change.
Since this is the first installment, readers really only get to know most of the characters on a surface basis. We learn more about the MCs (Hunter and Elly) the most, of course. Hunter was an incredibly selfish main character, but he is a thirteen year old boy, so I'm not really sure why I expected anything different. Elly seems to be very sweet and eager to please. Some of the other characters, like Margot and Joe, were given a bit more in depth characterization, but a lot of the characters were on the sidelines for now. In a series, this doesn't feel like nearly as big of a deal as it would in a stand alone, because there is plenty of time to learn more about everyone else as the story progresses through the rest of the books.
I thought it was really cool how much research the author must've put into this story to make it all come together. Imagine my surprise when I look up a few of the mystical creatures, thinking the entire time that they were invented entirely from J.L. Hickey's mind, and find out that all of the "monsters" are actually from real folklore and myths! In fact, the Beast of Bladenboro is from North Carolina, just over 2 hours away from where I live. I'm a bit spooked, honestly. All of the work that the author clearly put into researching and properly representing each monster made the story all the more believable, and it really pulls you in. Although the kids were immediately spooked upon entering the manor for the first time, I would love to visit a place like this. Where can I sign up??
Overall, it's a very good, quick read that I think will transition very nicely into the next installment. Middle grade magical realism is truly where it's at.
I Thoroughly enjoyed The Secret Seekers Society and the Beast Of Bladenboro. Hickey did a marvelous job bringing to life a fresh new YA fantasy adventure series to the market. This story had perfect blended amounts of real life lessons, emotional hardships, and page flipping adventures within it's content. The writing was smooth and easy to follow with just enough description to paint a clear picture as I eagerly scanned from page to page. The development of the cast was on time leaving no sequences out of place. The setting was intriguing being a mysterious mansion, and overall creative concept hooks the reader from the early pages. All in all, a very well balanced YA Fantasy adventure. I recommend this book to any reader looking for a fun new fantasy adventure series. I will be reading the next book, Solomon's Seal.
This is a very cute book! I can’t wait to 1. Give it to my niece to read and 2. Read the second one! The world building is fairly in depth even with how short it is and I absolutely need to know more about this conflict between the professors. Also, unfortunately, I am not immune to shitty men, so Dominick… I’ve got my eye on you. There are spelling and grammatical errors, but, especially as a self published book, they didn’t detract from the story at all.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I have to be honest, when I say that this book has been on my to-read list for a while. A friend of the author recommended it to me, and I kept meaning to buy it, you could have heard my squeal of delight when he messaged me offering an ARC for a review! And it's a real delight for me to be able to give him such excellent feedback on what is a stunning start to what I'm sure will become a very popular series.
The book begins with such a gripping start, you are literally hooked from the initial pages. The drama, the mystery, the intrigue, just the whole situation surrounding Hunter and Elly is brilliantly developed in a very short space of time, yet without skimping on any of the details. I guess what I'm trying to say is that this book hooks you in and grips your attention tight from the very beginning, and it holds it all the way to very end through the roller-coaster you ride.
I have to comment on the premise for this story as I am a self professed myth addict - simply put, it's fabulous! Hickey uses the blend of myths and legends to create an incredibly mysterious and shadowy background to the Belmonte Estate, but it's all so accurate and truthful it is just fabulous. The research is clearly there, and I have to give him credit for that as I felt like I learned more from reading the book. This mythical element feeds very well into the drama of the book, and adds an added level of depth to the proceedings.
The characters were fabulous, and you can most definitely empathise easily with the children. Hickey writes their curiosity and grief very well, with Hunter being a right little gem of a character you just can't help but love. They're typical kids and they pull you into their new little world with great panache and in a way that you just can't let them go. They pull you as a reader back to a childlike state, and you agree with the little bits of petulance and naughtiness they get up to because you want it to go their way. Cracking little bit of characterisation, and I'm looking forward to watching them develop over the next book.
In conclusion, this book was very gripping, incredibly interesting and well written. It's easy to read, difficult to put down and full of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. One for adults and older children alike, audiences young and old would find pleasure in reading this series.
Newly orphaned at such a young age, Hunter Glenn and his little sister, Eliza Lynn, find themselves alone, and teetering on the edge of a giant precipice. The two have been shipped off to live with their uncle, Joe, and are unsure as to what to do. Their new life seems anything but ordinary, and they feel more alone than ever. The two of them know they've been given a new life to live, yet nothing compares to the one they led when their parents were alive.
Arriving at a mysterious manor, Hunter and Eliza soon realize just how different things have become. In a sense, they're prisoners in a beautiful, yet intriguing, home. On the other hand, they're a liberty to take things as they come. Determined to make the most of their new situation, the children decide to band together in hopes of discovering the manor's secrets. Yet neither could have imagined the chain reaction of events they unwittingly set into motion.
There's something about the manor that doesn't seem quite right to them. Their uncle and his staff are adamant in keeping them from finding out just what goes on inside of the home's walls. The children know there's something out there. Something is watching, and they're not sure as to what it could be. They know their uncle means well, but their curiosity is far from sated.
If they're to survive within the manor's walls, the children will need to trust in each other, and in those who seek to keep them safe at all cost. There's a mystery to be solved, one they intend to make the most of. To get to the bottom of things, they'll need to believe in themselves as well as in the unexpected legacy they've been bequeathed. Only then, can they vanquish the evils that threaten to overcome them at every turn.
This is honestly a nice start to what appears to be a very delightful series. We meet two children who have to make do with the cards life has now dealt them. They're sullen and hurting, and want nothing more than to have their parents back. Something, sadly, that will never happen. I think J. L. lovingly crafted this unique world of monster hunting, leaving quite a bit of room for further expansion. It's going to be great in seeing how much the children mature as time goes by. I definitely look forward to it.
I downloaded this book free from amazon and after much nagging from a friend telling me I needed to hurry up and read this book I finally did, and I was not disappointed. This book was mysterious, heartwarming, and action packed, it even contained monsters and legends some I had heard of and some new ones like Treyer the giant green puppy who stole my heart. The mystery surrounding the creepy mansion was written in such a way as to reveal just enough but not to much keeping me entertained and curious. I loved the image of this big scary building filled with excitement and danger. I also enjoyed how the author had the ability to write from multiple points of view so seamlessly I didn't even notice at first and I was pleased with that as I am not usually a fan since it can be distracting to me sometimes but that was not the case here. The idea of a secret society that hunts, kills, and saves the paranormal and misunderstood of the world was neat and the Enlightenment to come will I think really open some doors into the world and allow the reader to find more of this world well I think so any way. I think this book was a fantastic start to what I am sure is going to be a very exciting series. I loved getting to know the characters in this book they all brought something to the table and now that I know what I know I am looking forward to seeing them on this journey. I know now that one beast is just the tip of the iceberg and after all they have been through and survived, not only Hunter and Elly but the adults too, so much more is left to be revealed and discovered. I hope we get to know more about the adults like Uncle Joe, Ben and Abrm and how they got to the mansion and their jobs there. Mostly i want to know about the whole Dominick thing as it seems to be the root of a lot of the trouble. Anyway don't be like me listen when I say you should read this book its a fun ride full of adventure.
Are you up for an adventure or wanting to read a great story to younger listeners, then this is the book for you. Some of the content maybe a little frightening to kids that still believe in the boogie man and such. But if explained and read in the right tone to them, I think they will enjoy the story.
The story is about a brother and a sister that become orphans when their parents die in a plane crash. They do have an uncle but it was the parent’s wishes that if something where to happen to them that the children would go live with their Godfather, a man the children have never met or knew anything about.
After a very long drive in a taxi the children finally see where it is that they will be living ….. a massive run down looking castle is what they think it is that is surrounded by forests. They are met there at the gate by a helicopter a woman that is the caretaker gets out and introduces herself and lets them in the gates of the manor. When they enter the inside the children are amazed at what they see mounted and stuffed all around them. Creatures some that they do not recognize and other that they know cannot be real. But are they??
Hunter and Elly are shown to their room a very large room with two beds a library of books, a dining table and a bay window that looks out into the courtyard.
They are told that dinner would be brought to them in a few hours. In the mean time there are lots of books to read and beds to take a nap if they are tiered. They are then locked into the room and told not to try to get out. They are locked in for their protection. “Protection” the kids say, it feel more like we are prisoners!
And so the story begins…… follow Hunter and Elly in their adventure as they find out what is living there on the mansion’s grounds….. And that something they thought were fake are in all actuality real!

Part of a blog tour. Review to come. *************** This is a middle grade novel, a first in a series, where a pair of orphans are whisked to a spooky mansion out in the country to be raised by their godfather, a man they have never met. Angry, grieving, and confused, Hunter and Elly are awed by what is inside the mansion, but locked into their room "for their own safety." Hunter is understandably upset until he hears wild growling their first night there. And so the children's adventure begins! From the stern Patty to the compassionate Margot to the mysterious professor to their new, giant doglike pet, the children are immersed into a land of reality filled with fairy-tale creatures.
I thought this book was cute, but a bit disjointed in writing. There are several instances where the wrong word is used (irrupted instead of erupted, ravenous instead of enraged, homonym misuse (your vs you're)etc.), the writing/conversations seem a bit choppy, sections just aren't fleshed out enough, etc.
Those minor instances aside, this book has the potential to be a favorite (series) for the middle grade child who loves the idea of mythological creatures, adventures, and perhaps likes to entertain the idea of hidden agendas for anthropologists and archaeologists. The story line is quite enjoyable and the beginnings of bonding friendships is there. I wish there had been more friendship building, relationship building, etc., perhaps more exposure on the sliminess of one character in particular. I want to learn more about the characters NOW and I cannot wait to see how the children's education will develop in future novels! (And I totally want a Cusith)
The Secret Seekers Society is, by it's own admission, very secretive. The people that are in the society aren't able to tell anyone anything about it or that they are in it. It's like Fight Club: The first rule of SSS is don't talk about SSS. The family and friends of anyone in SSS have no clue who or what they are. This proves to be difficult for the two main characters in this story as their parents have died and they are thrust into the world of the Secret Seekers.
I was pretty excited to read this book. I had purchased it a while ago and I have been hearing good things about the book. I was slightly disappointed in the book as it did not live up to the expectations I had for it. I expected more action and adventure and not so much back story or the kids wondering what was going on. It lacked excitement for me and I think if it had been told from first person from one of the kids, it might have been slightly better. I never really connected with any of the characters. I felt sorry for the kids because their parents were dead and no one would tell them anything. I also found lots of grammatical errors throughout the book. The book that I was reading was purchased from Amazon so it wasn't an ARC or unedited proof.
I am not sure if I will continue with the story as I felt like there wasn't enough of a hook for me to keep reading. For how much talking/non-action there was, there wasn't enough explained or to make me have the desire to want to find out more. It's up in the air at this time if I will continue. I guess I will see when the time comes. I give this story 3 books.
In the past week, I was reading The Secret Seekers Society and the Beast of Bladenboro by J.L. Hickey. I must say that I’m not a fan of books with supernatural elements and therefore, I usually don’t read books from the Paranormal Genre. And I haven’t heard of this particular author before. I decided to make an exception this time for the Read & Review and also because I think it’s time for me to expand my horizons and read some different books ;)
I was hooked to The Secret Seekers Society from Chapter 1. I could not stop reading about Hunter and Elly. I had all sorts of questions….what happened to them, where are they going etc. When the moment with the supernatural creatures came, I wasn’t ready for it. Plus it was late in the evening and I really wanted to read that part by daylight. I’ll stop here because I don’t want to spoil the book for you. I just want to emphasize that this book made me rethink my decision about not reading paranormal books. I never expected that I would read, much less like such a book. I’ve learnt my lesson – Never say never again!
Rating – considering the above, it is impossible for me to give this book anything less than 5 stars
Who would recommend it to – everyone actually
I can’t wait for Book 2. And I put J.L.Hickey on my Authors to Watch list meaning that his others books are somewhere near the top of my enormous TBR. I can’t wait to read more of his works.
It has been a long time since I was so enthralled in a book that I read it in just a few short days. Three days of having my nose plunged into these wonderfully written pages as I did laundry, cooked dinner and played outside with my kids. It has been so long since I could find myself this caught up in a story, that I had forgotten what it felt like. The gratification and satisfaction that it could bring. To have the words ignite my mind so intensely that I could vividly make out the details in my mind with no struggle or effort. It just flowed in my brain like a story should. I have read a lot of books lately. All of which were what I said, good and some great even. Each writing style different and capturing in their own way. They all had something that made them captivating. But this story is a true gem. Something that was hungrily devoured by my eyes (and ears when I had the text to speech rolling.) happily.
I would strongly recommend this, have and will continue to do so, book to EVERYONE! It was so nice to read a wonderful book that was clean and exciting. Well done! I will be reading more by this author!
This book was ok. I liked some of the characters and was interested in how things would turn out. I got the sense that the history was more extensive than was revealed in this book. Characters seem to have their own agendas. A few things took me out of the story:
- It appears to be written in third person limited but often jumped into a different character's thoughts or history.
- Over-explains, a lot.
- A few too many mighty's. The mighty room. The mighty mansion. The mighty dog. A mighty hug. The mighty library. A mighty size. A mighty arm. A mighty fist.
- A few derivative scenes. A children's orientation into a castle takes place in a large dining hall with long rectangular tables full of exquisite food, all beneath a high ceiling twinkling with stars.
- This last issue put me on the fence between 2 and 3 stars. Not a big spoiler, but:
I apologize for the muted review. Not a lot of time these days :-/
All though this isn't normally a story for me to jump at...I loved it !!! I will now open up my reading horizon. J.L. Hickey writes an amazing story. So much imagination, it reminds me of a Harry Potter story with the secrets within the walls of their society. This book once you start you better plan to be there a while reading because it's very hard to put down...absolutely love Hunter and Elly, the kids who lost their parents and have to move away, away from friends and everything they thought they knew of their parents. . They know nothing of their new guardian, never met him and don't know where he lives or anything about him. They are thrown into a world with secret passageways to amazing mystical creatures. Their first night at the mysterious mansion they meet new people, hear strange noises and are locked away in their room for days ....before I ruin any more. This story has twists and turns and such amazing writing....also love uncle Joe and of course Margot...can't wait to read the second story....absolutely would recommend this book...
The Secret Seekers Society and the Beast of Bladenboro was a fantastic book. The first paragraph alone drew me in, and as the story progressed it demanded my attention. I couldn't put it down- I was completely captivated. The author managed to walk the fine line between too simplistic and too complex and created the perfect balance. As I read, I could feel the children's anger and confusion. I could see the mansion with it's array of rich detail and picture all the interesting creatures who call the story home. This review is very difficult for me to write. There are so many different parts of the book that I enjoyed and would love to discuss, but I am afraid of spoiling anything for those who have yet to embark upon this adventure. Instead, I will say that Mr. J. L. Hickey has an amazing gift for words. I highly recommend that anyone reading this give the book a chance. You won't be disappointed. I, myself, will be waiting eagerly (and none too patiently) for the next installment.
I heard about this book on Kickstarter and wrote a mention of it on my site QuestforBooks.com. JL saw my post and offered me a copy as thanks for mentioning the Kickstarter campaign. (http://www.questforbooks.com/2012/pro...)
I decided to read the book and I have to say I enjoyed it a lot.
The story is about a pair of orphans that find themselves at the gates of a rather creepy looking mansion, which becomes their new home. The kids quickly find themselves facing startling technology, vicious fiends, and caring for a lovable cryptid.
This is a really fun book to read, it brought to mind some of the trouble I got into as a kid. Currently, the book is $0.99 on Amazon and for that price there's no good reason for a fantasy fan to pass it up.
when I first started to read Secret Seekers Society and the Beast of Bladenboro by J.L Hickey I was skeptical its starts out kinda slow and has a feel of 39 clues meets a series unfortunate events books where the parents die and the children go live somewhere they don't know with people they don't know. But the more you read you start to drift into this wonderful would of mystical creatures and hidden passageways, I loved the characters and how they interacted with one another. i also enjoyed the adventure the author took the children on, felt like I was right there with them.. Great read! I recommend this book for everyone who wants to go on an adventure!
*Please note: I received this book for free from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.*
Wow! This novel was an amazing, fantastical journey that reminded me of my imaginings as a child. I LOVED this vivid, fun and mysterious adventure! I was very happy that there were several likable, intelligent and (mentally) strong female characters. I would reccomend this novel to readers of all ages - children, teens and adults; and I am eagerly awaiting the sequel to this thrilling, addictive novel.
This is actually a nice story, I enjoyed it, but I did not like a lot of the characters. Maybe there was too much happening, but I really did not like them. And for a secret society... well they were not the unity I would expect them to be. I would NOT join if they ask me, not because I wasn't interested, but because ... well, lets say read the book and prove me wrong. Again, the story is very nice. Interesting even
I was completely surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this book. I was a little apprehensive when I purchased this book, but you had me hooked within the first paragraph... I truly enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the series... You are a great writer, so get writing and don't keep us waiting...
I stopped reading ya quite awhile ago, because they all started to be the same. however J.L. Hickey writes an amazing, keeps you on your toes, staying up way too late page turner, to see what happens next. I LOVED this book and can't wait for the next one. I recommend this book to everyone of all ages and genders. J.L. Hickey is def added to my list of favorite authors!
Welcome to a world of adventure. J. L. Hickey has opened so many doors with this book. A world that as children we wish that we could explore. Heck, as an adult I want to explore. The Secret Seekers Society And the Beast of Bladenboro brings us into the life of two children, siblings, Hunter and Ellie. recently orphaned, they are shipped off to live with their godfather, who they have never met, in a huge mansion. The mansion has many secrets, of which only a couple are revealed in the book. Thankfully this is a series. As the children try to settle down in the mysterious mansion they are made aware that this place is not as it seems. I am a huge Harry Potter fan and I have to say that this book reminds me of the Potter series. No, it's not a bunch of magic spells or a dark force trying to take the life of a child. It is the wonderment of being able to see through the eyes of a child and rediscover the world. Hickey has truly written a story that will rival Rowlings. Once everyone discovers The Secret Seekers Society and the series hits it big I will be saying I was once asked to review by J.L. Hickey!!!! Yes I am that confident in this book. So I request of all of you that follow my blog pick up this book. It is FREE on Amazon, SCORE! Read them with your children, I did. The Secret Seekers Society is a middle school grade level (as Potter began that way). My 8 year old son absolutely loved it. I am truly excited to get the second book and begin it. So Mr. Hickey just remember me when you are blowing up the charts, and if ever The Secret Seekers Society goes big screen know that I will be there opening day!
