Book updated 5/6/2020

My name is Claudia, but it wasn’t always. Eleven years ago, my life changed. My best friend became my number one fear, and I knew staying was not an option.

After ten years of being on the run, it looks like he has forgotten about me. No longer do I feel like I need to hide, and for the first time in years, I am trying to live a normal life.

I was wrong though, so very wrong. My past has found me, and the lies I wove to protect myself have started to unravel.

I’m now faced with the same choices I had all those years ago. Do I stay to fight the past that haunts me; or do I run again, because running is what I’m good at?

The countdown has started. My window of opportunity is closing fast.

The Chase is On is a beautiful debut novel, and start to a new series. I look forward to watching Brooke grow as an author.

I can't wait to see what happens with Claudia and the guys in book 2. I already have my theories on who the mystery villain is going to be.

Good

I rather enjoy the subtle nuances of the wolves here, how is a primal side that perks up every so often. I feel horrible for Claudia, and I think it’s just going to get worse. Blave though.... dang man. Sigh.

I hoping for some MFC growth in the next book

The book overall was okay, I got myself through to the end- so that means something. The things I didn’t like:
- there was a lot of “telling” and I found my self skimming.
- the main female character is a bit annoying. I get that the situation is hard (or multiple for our poor girl) but she’s kinda weak. She does take action but is just easily manipulated and doesn’t really show any smarts.
-this leads me to think that her future love interests are going to overshadow her in all aspects of her life and just become a shell for the men around her.
-which leads me to the talk so early in the budding relationship between all the characters about the guys particular needs and kinks. It came off as kind of skeevy and made me not want to read any future intimate scenes because it’s not an organic situation reached by both parties. One guy is a very stubborn Dom, so any future relationship will be dictated by him. And if I have to read one more book that has the girl surprised she “likes this” out of the blue, I’m going to cry. I would love to see a relationship between these type of people end with them both compromising and exchanging dominate needs.
-the cliff hanger was just crazy. I find myself dreading the MFC getting together with this dude- there has got to be some things that can’t be forgiven. But alas- it probably will be of no consequence because “fated” is the name of the game.

-overall I found this book set up multiple abusive relationships that will later “work out”, guys who will get what they want with a pliant female main character who will just be whatever they need.

I’m not interested in seeing these personal relationships develop this way. The premise and plot was interesting enough but I don’t know if I can give it a glowing review with these cliche and franking unhealthy troupes being set up.

Interesting and intriguing

I did enjoy reading this book. Claudia as her new name we know her by has an interesting story, but I don’t understand why Bryce is so crazed for her. Bryce was her bff but he’s suddenly unhinged. So Claudia changes her name to this one, and runs. We don’t know all of what happened or why Bryce is so obsessed with her. There are a few other unknown elements in play.

The story is also written in the telling manner. If you google telling vs showing the link to autocrit is the one to read about the differences and it makes for a better reading experience imo. This has a bit of showing but much more telling than anything else.

Still overall I’m excited to see how the series goes and if she will get with her guys or not. And what is truly behind Bryce’s obsession.

Brooke Warren makes an entrance. Brooke takes you on an adventure with The Chase Is On. The storyline is great the character's are loveable and relatable and her attention to detail is impeccable. You see character growth and development that is set at a natural pace and not forced along with very nice word building. If you want a story to keep you wondering what's going to happen next and full of excitement this book is for you. You will easily fall in love with Claudia, the guy's and her friends along the way.

Loved the book but it lost a couple of stars because.....
It was obvious that Claudia was the true mate of Granger and Blave, but neither tried to find her and obviously had sex with other women while they were apart
(Ewww), no talk about Claudia having any one night stands of course (which is obviously typical, as women become nuns when not with their fated). I also didn’t need to hear Ascher’s internal musings about Beth’s lips around his c##k or him between her legs, and let’s not forget how they’ve shared women before 🙄🙄 granted this was before he met Claudia but still I DON’T NEED TO READ ABOUT IT!!

Don’t get he started on the usual A-Hope that is Blave....why oh why do we always have to have one dickhead in the harem!!

If I read the 2nd book and it says 6 months later I may have to throw my kindle at the wall!!

On a plus there’s no M/M

This is the first book in the Alphas and Betas series. I saw this back when it was first releasing and added it to my TBR list, but didn’t get a chance to read it until recently. I so regret not reading this book sooner.

For those who want the nut shell: survivor FMC trope, fated mates/shifter storyline, fast burn (super hot), on the fence about whether it’s a cliffie.

What I like about Claudia is that she falls into the survivor category. She’s been through the traumatic experience that, unfortunately, no one realises is traumatic, so she has to hide. But she does what she needs to get through it and come out the other side; she doesn’t just crumble. At the same time, I don’t think she views herself as strong; she’s just doing what she has to without realising what it takes. Then, fate crosses her paths with the men of the story. There are some unexpected characters there, and I definitely want to know more about them. One of the criticisms I have is that we didn’t really get much time with the guys in this story. There is a lot of back story and history in this one, and it’s all needed; it doesn’t bog the story down. But you just don’t get to spend much time with them. So it’s more of a disappointment then it is a criticism, I guess. That said, I fully appreciate that this is only book 1, and I’m hoping that we’ll see more relationship development in book 2. For those interested, even though the relationships don’t get really developed, this is more of a fated mates type of story, which builds on existing chemistry. This is definitely a fast burn story, and holy sweet baby Jeebus it’s hot.

As for the ending, I genuinely am not sure how I feel about whether it’s a cliffie. Part of me thinks yes, because the plot is a little bit unresolved, but part of me thinks no because it could be so much worse. Guess you’ll need to read it to decide for yourself for this one. Overall, it was an entertaining, sexy read that I’m looking forward to see what happens with book 2. And I won’t wait so long to read the next one.

This was such a great introduction to the Pack Everhart series. It truly was mostly an introduction to what I’m sure is the heart of the story in the second and third books of the series.

We start 11 years prior to the main events of the book. Honestly, I had no idea what was happening because there wasn’t much explanation given and I was pretty concerned I had downloaded the wrong book. I felt some explanation was necessary to that besides just who the POV was centered on because Rhayven is the same person as Claudia but we had no idea about that until like 5-6 chapters in.

Anyway, we get to see the detailed backstory of Rhayven becoming Claudia and the hardships she’s had to endure to get there. There are multiple time skips but the flow of the story was pretty good. This book was mostly about getting that history and the introductions to the mates for Claudia.

The multiple POVs for this book were great on getting insight into the different guys in the harem and enjoyed their character depth. They were distinguishable enough and intriguing enough to be drawn into their characters. And there is still development to be had so I’m excited for that.

Claudia was a pretty good FMC. Even if she was fighting her attraction half the time and became a drooling fool for some (most) of her interactions with the guys, Claudia is a character who will fight for her survival no matter what she has been through and it’s enjoyable to see her trying to depend on herself in the face of her past. Her trust issues hold her back and her need to protect her new found guys is pushing her to leave them.

Despite them being fated mates, Claudia still doesn’t know that and is fighting her attraction to the guys to keep herself and them safe. Even Blave has trust issues with her and doesn’t want to get too close despite the obvious attraction.

I’m super interested to see where the plot will go from here, especially after the semi-cliffhanger the book left off in. Definitely would recommend this book to those who are into fated bonds and werewolves.

***SPOILERS***

Rhayven's parents died and she's adopted by the pack Alpha and his wife, who have a son, Bryce. Bryce is abusive and becomes obsessed with Rhayven. He forces her into a mate bond on her 21st birthday. However, before the ceremony, she escapes following a plan she spent months putting together. Eight years later the story picks up on Rhayven (now Claudia) doing the dirty work for Raphael, another Alpha. In her last job for him, she plants recording device in a hotel conference room where other pack Alphas are meeting to discuss an alliance. At the casino she meets one of the Alpha's (Blave) and his Beta (Granger). She sleeps with Granger and they both feel the mate pull. She leaves that night to escape Raphael and thinks she'll never see Blave and Granger again. The story picks up two years later when Rhayven is catering a party. Granger and Blave are there along with two other Betas in their pack, Milo and Ascher. They all feel the mate pull to Rhayven. Surprise, Bryce is in attendance and threatens her in front of the harem. They take her back to their condo where she spends another night with Granger. Raphael turns up and tells Blave's father (the current Alpha of the pack) about Rhayven planting the recording device that day at the casino. The book ends with them basically kicking Rhayven out and she flees. Bryce is loving it because now she doesn't have her harem to protect her.

I loved the start of this book with Rhayven planning her escape and dealing with Bryce. Then is was like fast forward eight (which I'm sure were very interesting) years, one night with Granger. Then fast forward two (maybe interesting?) years, one night with granger. Then instant love with the harem. Then bad guy coming to kidnap her. What started out unique, ended up run of mill. Not reading the second.

Very appropriate title

The chase begins for Claudia when some drama unfolds right in the first chapter. Claudia is in love, but someone else wants her for himself. What better way to get that then to threaten the one you love. Ah but Claudia is a smart MFC it may take her a whole year to get it worked out but she finds a way to get out. For years she is constantly moving trying to stay a step ahead of the shifter chasing her, but then she gets caught up in some other drama. Claudia ends up meeting Granger and has an instant pull to him, where as with Blave she just wants to run from him. Two more years go by and she ends up at a party for Milo where once again Granger is there. But she seems to be pulled into 4 different directions with these shifters, but trouble shows up and she must go on the run again. Who will catch up to her first, ugh the cliff hanger I so need the next book! What will Claudia do. Will the 4 men chase after her, or will Bryce get to her first. It was a great first book in this series and I'm looking forward to more books from this author. (Read and reviewed on KU)

Looking forward to sequel

Congatulations to Brooke on a great first book! Although I would have only given 4 stars for beginning of book, as it continued the writing began to flow more, and once I discovered it was a debut novel, 4.5 stars was the way to go for me but alas halves are not accepted hence the 5 stars for extra encouragement to a promising new author.
Good characters and development throughout without giving everything away in first book. Enough info to create curiosity about them and want to learn more (even Blave who acts like an ass lol). Storyline compels to keep reading, and ends on cliffhanger (not as bad as many out there), but definitely causes interest in following up with the 2nd book.
Lots of sexual tension between some characters which will no doubt be explored in future books. However all is not lost as one of the guys got lucky and a couple of steamy sections liven things up giving a hint of what's in store.
I could continue but would suggest instead to go ahead and read it for yourself. Support an upcoming new author!

Omg if you want to feel all the feels read this book do it. I went from laughing to crying to yelling at my kindle this book hit you hard. I love how all the characters grow with each other and on their own. Claudia is a spitfire who is definitely used to being on her own, but slowly she lets people in I related to that so much. Granger is all kinds of sweet I knew I was going to like him from the start. Ascher is a certified playboy, but I love seeing his hidden sweet side he is going to grow on me I can tell. Milo the shy book smart Dom I love all his aspects and I can't wait to see him open up and come out of his shell. Blave omg I normally love alpha asshole types who take whatever they want, but I want to throat punch him so hard for what he did to her. If you read the book you"ll know what I mean. I want to rip Bryce's head off and that is all. I am excited to see what happens in book two thank you for giving me the privilege to read your fantastic tear-jerker of a book.

Seemed like a promising shifter book from the blurb but the romance is just not engaging enough to hold my attention.

At first I found the FMC an active person with the way she deals with her situation but once her past catches up with her, the character just loses her way and becomes a reactionary POV that bored me. The plot is just too black and white with one dimensional bad guys that aren't anything interesting. All there's left is the romance which had harem characters so monotonous. I mean the first meeting itself, I felt them meh.

All of the wolfy things you find in a shifter book is just a touch too secondary to feel any impact. The things happening don't give too much space for characters other than the typical tropes that are way too common.

The book plays it very safe using true and tried plot-lines with predictable characters and a romance that's way too lacklustre to make me reach for the next book.

The Chase is On is the first book of the Alpha and Betas series by Brooke Warren. Brooke has created a unique Shifter Paranormal Reverse Harem book. I was hooked the minute I started reading and I couldn’t put it down. It is steamy, fast paced, and action packed. The main character Claudia, a wolf shifter, has been on the run for ten years and had finally found a place where she felt safe and even allowed herself to have a close friend, Hannah. One night changes everything when her past catches up to her. She is rescued by three wolf shifters Granger, Ascher and Milo. She tries to resist her feelings for each of them but her past is coming for her and she needs to run. This series has everything I love in a reverse harem. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series to see what is next for Claudia and her shifters!

Give me more!

Holy shnikes! That was some intense stuff... I need MORE. We are given all the necessary background info bit by bit with an in depth knowledge of our poor FMC. Rayven is running the weight of the world on her shoulders and when she finally comes across something good, something destroys that little bit of happiness. Poor girl. Hopefully book two proves to be a come back for her! And hopefully the fellas figure their shenanigans out cause something is amiss in their little world.....

Interesting Premise

I'm curious to see where this one will pick up in the next book because of ending in this one. I don't so much know if I'd call it a cliffhanger because tur story could actually be mostly tied up in the sad way this story ends, that said its definitely not the happily ever after you hope for when you open a book like this so let's hope there's a sequel to come. The story was interesting, but I'd like to know a lot more about this world of shifters. Of all it was a good story and I look forward to future titles.

I liked all the MCs and the overall story. I also liked how we also get the antagonist’s POV as well. And I like how the characters are older and not 22. I’m interested to see how Blave (one of my two complaints would be his name, I kept quoting princess diaries in my head when I read it) is redeemed since he was always only a dick to her. My other issue is like this man is literally middle aged, he’s 40, like I get the pack hierarchy and all that but come on, if you don’t want to marry that chick don’t do it, you’re not 18, make your own choices

Oh wow, for a debut book this was amazing! Claudia has a dark past and moves around to make a better life for herself. As she fights for a normal life, she encounters her men. Let me just tell you, the chemistry is real. This was a refreshing book and the ending sneaks up out of nowhere and will leave you with a serious book hangover. I highly recommend reading this book and look forward to the next.

Great book, multiple POVs

This is a very well written book, that being said, there are several points of view through out, sometimes causing it to drag on the story a little, for me. I like the POVs, it just seemed to delay getting to the action of the book. I’m more instant gratification based I guess. But I really did enjoy the story. Worth the read, the cliff hanger promises more action in book 2, we’ll see!

This book is really intense.
It ends on a serious cliffhanger that leaves you wanting a taste of book 2.
Claudia is a really strong character and she’s dealt with a bad hand in life but I like it how she doesn’t let that change who she is.
Also, I think I’m a little bit in love with Granger and Ascher <3
All in all, a really interesting and hot read.

If you want a first in a series book that has you aching for the next..this is your book! Claudia's history drew me in....and those sexy shifters kept me there. Excited to see where the future is taking them.

Love Brooke's details in this book. She makes you feel a part of what you are reading and the descriptions are vividly breathtaking at times.

Errors and stilted dialogue (on the verge of not being able to continue, but not quite hitting that mark). I won a copy in a giveaway, and the premise was promising. I dove in, and really, it's a very good plot. I read it in a day. The errors aren't so bad that I would stop the series, but I really hope they do get fixed.

Worth reading

This is the first book by Brooke Warren and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I loved the unique way of spelling Rhayven. The characters are well written and the plot makes this book hard to put down! Wish there was more of the shifter side not just a small snippet. Bring on Bonded by Fate!

Brilliant

Great book, couldn’t put it down. Well written, good storyline and I love the main character. This book is well balanced with interesting characters and a good villain. There was enough of love interests and steam. It would class as a slow burn without feeling too slow. Can’t wait to see where the next book goes.
