How can you possibly review your own story? It’s virtually impossible for me to step back from having lived the scenes inside the pages, and give an objective opinion one way or the other. One word describes the “result” of writing the book: therapeutic.
Available from amazon in three formats: print, ebook and now audiobooks.

I could not put down this book once I started reading it. Sarah's depiction of her childhood in a dysfunctional home alcoholic parents and her own struggles with alcohol is a story of an over-comer. It would be easy for someone who grew up with alcoholic and verbally abusive parents to repeat that cycle. In fact, her closest sibling was unable to conquer his own demons and had a tragic death. This is a story of hope. I have known Sarah since shortly after she chose to live a sober life. AS A RESULT of the grief of her childhood and early adult years, she changed her path and has become an amazing mother, wife, and friend. Sarah's story is one that I hope others read and find inspirational in their own journeys to wholeness and a beautiful life.

Sarah Blizzard Robinson's memoir is about generations of alcoholism and other addictions in her family. There are deaths and humiliations and, for the writer and some of her loved ones (but not all), recovery. It is a book written in a direct style, with no attempt to make excuses. Rather. she insists on taking personal responsibility and, above all, not to resent or hate. I had trouble putting the book down in my eagerness to know how bad it was going to get, and who was going to pull out of the family tailspin and who was not.

And yet, I think maybe what I liked best, aside from the momentum of the narrative, was the idiosyncracy of the individuals: yes, Blizzard's father was drunk every night, but he was also a highly skilled, self-taught antique clock repair person with a huge collection of clocks and the ability to repair clocks that everyone else gave up on.

And yes the Blizzard parents drank together every evening and made out with inappropriate passion in front of their children, but at the same time, they were to all appearances deeply in love, and if not models of sobriety, models of meaningful monogamy. The list goes on: the destructive power of addictions, but also the resiliency of human personality.

The captivating family biography that Sarah Blizzard Robinson characterizes brought me to many places in my own life that I had tucked away to forget: the dynamic of bruised family relationships, the painful moments of forgiveness, the raw grief of losing loved ones...But it also soared with beautiful accounts of faith struggles and redemption. Growing up 10 years senior to Sarah Blizzard I was delighted with her vivid recollection of so many things happening to a young girl! My daughter recommended this book to me and I finished it one one sitting.

I found this memoir difficult to read. Having known the author for a brief period of time when we shared the same circle of friends in Wheeling, WV, I was surprised to read of the details of her early years. I guess that we never really know what goes on behind closed doors! Sarah, you have overcome much in your life. I wish you much happiness & success with this book & your future writing efforts. God bless you!

Dysfunctional families lead to great loss

I knew Sarah growing up and although I knew nothing about her dysfunctional family and struggle with alcoholism, I had my own dysfunctional family with their own struggle with alcoholism and enabling. I remember the labor day flood of 1975 and to this day when I pass the house on the corner of Edgewood St., I remember the garage being washed away. I also haven't had alcohol since 1996, although I didn't feel I had an issue, I knew giving it up was for my own good...don't miss it! Thanks Sarah for sharing your story and your struggles.

As a result of her childhood, Sarah has become a strong, resilient woman, one who has shared the angst of growing up with a dysfunctional family. Her personal recovery is inspiring, and will likely encourage others to tell their stories as a passage to healing.
