Being is Greater than Doing: How to Awaken Your Passion, Embrace Your Pain, Own Your Power, and Establish Your Principles

Rate this book
You can’t do it all, but you can have it all. A life that is true to you and one that makes a difference in the world.

In this radically simple yet profound how-to guide, you will learn the core pillars and practices in living your best life possible. Authenticity, happiness, and meaning are not enemies. In fact, they’re best friends and partners.

Your life’s purpose is not so much to do something but rather to become somebody . Personal-development is not the means to a goal, but the very goal itself. And the irony is that when we become our true and best self, we inadvertently do the most good. What if instead of doing stuff, chasing dreams, collecting memories, or achieving goals, we shifted our priority in being somebody?

Being is Greater that Doing argues that the best thing you can do for you, your loved ones, and the world, is to become your true and best self. This is not just another self-help book. This is a personal-development book that is other-centered. When we awaken to the people and purposes we are willing to sacrificially live for, embrace the self-sabotaging lies we have been living out of, own the gifts and strengths we unique possess, and establish a guiding manifesto to live by, life isn’t only clearer, it’s better. Actually, it’s the best.

Filled with personal anecdotes, honest confessions, ancient wisdom and modern psychology, from philosopher Aristotle to leadership guru John Maxwell, Being is Greater than Doing will help you become your authentic and best self. You might even change the world.

In "Being is Greater than Doing", Ryan Lui argues convincingly for the importance of introspection and knowing yourself in order to be the best you can be and create real value for yourself, your relationships, your communities, and the world. Although I don't typically read self-help books, "Being is Greater than Doing" offered me a very good reminder of why knowing yourself is important and a very easy to understand breakdown of key principles to this process as well as practical steps to start and maintain the process. In life and particularly in my work, it is very easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and the 'busyness' of it all, and I don't think this is a rare occurrence in our Western society today. I would recommend to anyone experiencing frustration over the 'grind' or a lack of purpose.

If anyone was to ask me a question regarding life and the best trail to take through life, I would immediately hand them Ryan Lui’s novel, Being is Greater than Doing. It doesn’t matter what walk of life you’re coming from, Ryan lays down the facts and brings to our attention both the great and minuscule things that can influence how we move through our lives. Although you can probably find this book under a self-help section, it goes far beyond that. Ryan opens our eyes and helps us understand the potential we bring to the world around us on a daily basis, whether it’s from following our passions or making everyday or life-changing decisions. Sometimes we come across bumps along the way, whether it’s because of a negative experience, self-doubt or any other obstacle. But it’s up to us to determine how to interpret those moments and learn from them. What makes this book stand out above many other novels categorized under the same genre is Ryan’s personable and informal voice that instantly grabs your attention. All of the references that he makes are also relevant in today’s society, which makes it all the more captivating. But, I think the best thing about the novel is the fact that it only gives us the tools we need to act on our own decisions. Whereas many self-help books make decisions for us, which isn't always the best solution because everyone is different. So whether you are just looking for a new book to read or need a supporting hand through a tough time, take a couple minutes and read Being is Greater than Doing because I guarantee that you'll understand life a little better than before!

A MUST READ for anyone who has every asked out loud the question, "What is wrong with this world?" Ryan Lui dives deep into the habits and actions that have shaped the cultures and societies we live in today. The great news is he doesn't stop there he walks you through what we all wrestle with after we ask the question above, "What is my purpose? How can I make a difference in this crazy world?" He methodically and tenaciously peels back the layers that we need to unlearn about ourselves in order for us to realize that the change has to start in each of us. Ryan, does a great job of utilizing both historical and modern references to tie every message together letting it all sink in to the readers head. If I can walk away with a couple of nuggets after reading a book then it was well worth the price. Ryan surpassed that expectation in almost every chapter. I would highly recommend having a notebook handy when reading this book as there will be many points when reading you will want to write a key point down to take action on later. This is a book the world needs more than every with all that is going on. The best thing you can do for yourself is read this book. The best thing you can do for the rest of us is pass it on.

A Life-Changer!
Do you know yourself? Truly, deep down, authentically--know yourself? I was lucky to receive an advance copy of this book in audio form. I enjoyed listening to the author himself supply the narration, with a warm tone, even cadence, and genuine emotion. The words came alive for me in a way they wouldn't if I'd just read them. However, this book is packed with so many great insights and advice for living a better life that I had to get the eBook so I could reread sections again and again. It even comes with a workbook, so you can roll your sleeves up and put in the work to ask yourself the deep questions.

To quote Ryan Lui, "You are the CEO of your life." To me, that means if I want to be successful in anything I do, I must first make sure I am the best person I can be. I must change from within in order to affect change in my relationships, career, and life. The only thing we can truly change is ourselves, and we are all a work in progress. Being is Greater than Doing teaches us to strive for what is true, good, and beautiful. A must-read for anyone wanting to live a better life!

This book helped me assess my situation and choose my goals for 2019. I found it to be encouraging, motivating, prompted me to think deeper without being overly philosophical, and helped me focus. As a bonus, it helped me get rid of the lingering bitterness against my parents. I felt like the author was my private coach. And the workbook really helped apply what he was writing about specifically to my life. I'll be reading this every quarter!

Live your best life!

We’ve heard it all before, how to live your best life blah, blah but Being actually breaks it down in such a succinct way that it makes complete sense. So many of the stories are relatable and a reminder of some important truths. Very impactful and thought provoking.

This book is a vibrant call to be true to yourself. To redefine your concept of success so that, in being the you that you are meant to be, you ensure greater success than your original definition allowed for. Look forward to facing the day, enjoy your job, make wise decisions, be the real you. It’s almost a chatty book, written to speak to you not to preach to you. It’s full of ideas and examples – supremely practical. The authors experience in coaching and mentoring others, and his expertise in the subject, both shine through clearly. If you feel lost, demotivated, or that you’re getting nowhere in your life, or if you battle to find real enjoyment in what you do, then this book is for you.
