Rex Dalton, the former black ops field agent, and his best friend, Digger, the former military dog, are exploring the remarkable history of Peru when they befriend a retired American couple. The couple invites them to join their expedition to a remote village high up in the Andes Mountains to inspect an archaeological site in which they want to invest.
But on arrival in the village, it doesn't take long for Rex to discover that his new friends are victims of a cleverly designed con. This con is run by people who will do anything to make sure Rex and Digger don't interfere.
THE INCA CON is a full-length novel, a nail-biting thriller by best-selling author JC Ryan. It is the fifth book in the electrifying new Rex Dalton series.
Rex Continues His Tour Of Ancient Times, Finding A Mystery Everywhere He goes
Rex and Digger continue their expedition through history traveling through the Andes Mountains in Peru. After meeting up with a couple they travel with them to an archeological dig, excited to hear stories of old from the villagers. But, the person who knows the dig, Junior, is disliked by Digger immediately, though Rex can't figure out why... As Junior fast talks his plan to the old couple, Rex smells a rat. It happens again, as Rex's plan for relaxation turns into anything but!!! A 5 STAR story that grabs you into the action immediately and does Not let you go, as our dynamic duo of dog and man do what is needed to help all involved!
Another fantastic Rex Dalton book that takes us to Peru and a clever ruse to swindle money out of an older couple. Rex and his dog Digger, high in the Andes on an Archaeological site, will have to deal with some native villagers and the people trying to take advantage of their site. Definitely grab a copy and see what Rex and Digger are up to next. The Inca Con
The Inca Con #5 - I can't wait to read a book from this series and I'm so lucky to have found this author after he released several books. I don't have to wait long to read the next one. In Peru, chasing history and finding a whole can of whoop*** keeps Rex and Digger in their roles as guardians for several different characters plus a village and their dying children. The duo are closed to married couple status finishing each other's thoughts; no traces of their earlier relationship since they've been together over a year. The storylines are interesting, the pace is steady and the action realistic. There's no stupidity, dumb dialog or Hollywood action scenes. A special character holds Rex's attention and she's not a dumb dame. Read these books in order for best value. I contacted the author a while back to review his books. 5*
Rex Dalton series: No Doubt - I read The Fulcrum (#1) before I read this short story. I enjoyed the writing style of the beginning chapters and the presentation of the island's natives and tourists. Quite comical until the murder, then the style changed similar to The Fulcrum. There's a bit of maturity in the character and dialog missing in this short, but it's still an interesting and entertaining story. This is introduction to Rex and Digger's histories, as well as bits and bobs about Rex's purpose for being on the island. The Fulcrum actually did a great job with Rex and Digger, which makes this short unnecessary, but still a good read. 4*
The Fulcrum #1 - My first read by this author and I couldn't put the book down! Mesmerized by the writing style, the vivid descriptions and the storylines, I read without stopping. Fast paced, action packed and interesting on several facets. Rex is a good example of what many Americans used to be, the masses who made this country great. Now after the decades of the Dark State (read chapter 15 for clarification) at work molding the brainwashed and dumb downed younger American generations with Mickey Dees and smartphones, our future and security is at stake. This is not a political agenda on part of the author, but part of the description of what we're facing; the reasons Rex became driven. The truth of what we're actually facing with cartels, terrorists and the havoc and destruction caused by the corruption and ineptness of our government's screaming chimps. Oh, sorry, our politicians.
I thought our Founding Fathers voted English (by one vote over German) as our Country's language? A point that caused me concern was his blacking out and thinking he was rescuing his sister. Not sure he would have been allowed to continue, but I'm not in that world and maybe he has special talents that were in dire need. As for mental testing, as determined as he was, he probably had the ability to pass them. Of course there's clarification later concerning those tests. While the ending was not a cliffhanger, the job was accomplished, plus; the ending gives the opening to the next book of the series. Ludlum is my favorite author, but I've found another one that I look forward to reading more of his work. The only editing needed was Internet, somehow everyone thinks this proper noun and place is lower case. I found this book on authorsxp.com. 5*
The Power of Three #2 - I absolutely enjoy this author's books. If you're Ludlum and company fan, you will like Ryan, too. If you haven't read The Fulcrum, the first book, it isn't necessary since this book gives background from the first. But I recommend reading it anyway; it is a good foundation for the series. Well written, fast paced with intriguing and suspense filled storylines. The characters range from good to despicable, with many characters from the previous book. The emotions run the gamut. The terrible truth about America's governing leaders will dishearten many, but there's still hope the Dark State won't win completely. After all, not all Americans want donuts and circuses; the proof of that lies with the current elected president, instead of the increased circus clowns being elected. The relationship between Rex and Trigger develop, but at a great cost to both. Part of the cost brings Rex to make decisions about their future and leaves possibilities of multiple paths to be taken in their journeys. While not a cliffhanger, the story is complete, but the series does continue. There's an overview, which I appreciate knowing what a story is about before I read nowadays. I contacted the author to review his books and found this book on authorsxp.com. Minor editing needed. 5*
Unchained #3 - As good as all the other books were, this one tops them. Mr. Ryan has become one of my favorite (new) authors in my all time favorite genre. This is another well written and fast paced adventure. The intrigue and planning to make all come together is great. Everything is realistic and there's no "Hollywood poof" to make things work; the storylines have been planned and well thought out. The characters are developed as much as their roles need them to be. The main characters, of course, continue to grow in their roles as the storylines continue. The vivid and clear descriptions do not leave the reader confused or hanging, but involved with the happenings. The travels are interesting in themselves. Rex and Digger are getting better with their relationship; and Rex is gathering a family of friends to end his days alone. Both kept growing as the pages flew by. There are overviews on all the stories in this series, which I appreciate knowing about a story before I read it. I contacted the author to review his books and received this one through AXP. 5*
Sideswiped #4 - I absolute enjoy this series and this book fits in like a charm. Fast paced and intriguing, this interesting addition keeps the reader immersed in the story until the last page. Again, we met good and interesting characters and glimpses into another culture. The characters run the gamut from braggart fool to criminal mercenary to doctors and more. The vivid descriptions place the reader in the mix and flow. There's maybe a touch of romance, maybe not, but ask Digger his opinion about that. The emotions don't run rampant as they did in Unchained, but there's enough to make the story work. I contacted the author to review his books. 4* Rex Dalton end.
This book takes Rex and Digger to Peru where his plans for a secluded visit run into one issue after another as he heads to Machu Picchu with its crowds of tourists. Once again Digger is the star of the story as Rex joins an older couple in their trek to an undiscovered site. Violence and deception provide excitement, while a lovely Peruvian lady joins Rex in a romantic interlude. The character, both native and visitor, are unique and realistic. The writing flows well as it creates images without interfering with action. For education and entertainment this is the best book of the series.
It has been a while since I read a book from this series. After reading the Inca Con I was reminded why I loved these books so much. The storylines are great, very cleverly created, characters so real, you'd think it's someone you know. Another great job by the author. Please keep them coming JC.
This is book five in the Rex Dalton thriller series and finds Rex and his companion, Digger a former military dog, in the remote mountains of Peru. A history buff as well as a former black ops field agent, Rex is using his reported death to escape from those who tried to kill him and enjoy his long-time love of history. Exploring different parts of the world and ancient monuments as well as gaining knowledge of the local people and often learning the local dialect and speaking it as well as a local, due to his propensity for languages.
He and Digger had decided to walk to the remote sites rather than join an organised tour, preferring the freedom that gave and the peaceful reflection available, rather than being part of a large crowd. This plan is waylaid when he meets and elderly retired couple, Flo and Barry, from America. She is fit for her age and looks after herself, but her husband lived for his work, until he sold it and they decided to go travelling and help with his hobby of archaeology, by funding small digs. They ask him to join them and he is invited to a remote village with them, where they are told is an undiscovered gold mine of a site, ready and ripe for investment. They have been convince of its existence by a young man called Junior that they met along the way.
Rex finds the story a little suspect, but goes along as he wants to get access to the remote village elders and learn more of their verbal history. Digger doesn’t like Junior from the minute he meet him and growls every time he is near. From the past year of being with Digger, Rex has learnt that Digger is a good judge of character and there is something in Junior’s manner and story that rubs Rex the wrong way. He decides to keep an eye on matters with the old couple and hope they aren’t being fleeced.
He thinks they may be victims of a modern version of the salted mine scam, where fake relics are left in plain sight to entice others to invest in the site and their money will just disappear into the ether. The remote villagers are somehow involved in this scam, willingly or otherwise and have been promised a doctor with the money paid for the land by Junior. Their young children have been struck down by a wasting disease and there seems to be no cure that the villagers know of. Their young are dying and the question has to be whether this is something to do with the interference and influence of Junior and his backers or not.
Rex has another mystery to solve and villagers to rescue in this book He uses his Indian assistant, Rehka who he rescued from a Saudi harem and set up as his IT person due to her skills and need of a positive purpose in life after her ordeal, to find out more about this Junior character. He needs to know what this character is up to and if he means to fleece his new companions and what hold he has over the villagers. Even the village leader is brief in his explanations and surprised when Rex finds out that many of the men from the village work in a mine nearby. There are plenty of secrets and someone doesn’t want Rex or Digger to find out what they are doing nor to interfere in any way.
Another great storyline in this series, a little different than most as there is not so much action, but there is plenty of local colour added to the story to keep your interest as Rex and Digger come to the rescue once again. This is the sixth book in this series that I have read and I love how well Rex and Digger get along and work together, after their not so easy beginning. The skills Rex has from his past are always present and ready to be applied at any moment and you sense a morality to his actions, shown by what he has done since rescuing Rehka and others from the harem and gaining control of the bad guy’s funds, to redistribute them where they are needed.
I look forward to reading the rest of the series and the newest one out soon. I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems but have bought the final version as well and would recommend it to all that like a Robin Hood character with the skills of a ninja and a thriller of a read. I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
The Inca Con (A Rex Dalton Thriller #5) by J.C. Ryan is another terrific thriller by this talented writer.
Rex and his faithful "service dog" Digger once again overcome terrible odds to save the day. Digger is actually a military dog, but Rex and Digger are posing as a blogger and his dog while hiding from the operatives who seek to find and kill them until the time is right for Rex Dalton to seek revenge for the murder of his friends and Digger's owner.
While innocently traveling through Peru, he meets and older retired couple who are planning a trip into the wilderness of the Andes in search of an unknown site of ancient ruins. Rex agrees to go along since the going will be very rough and arduous and the man leading them seems somewhat shady. Sure enough, Rex discovers the site has been "salted" with phoney relics and his new friends are the victims of a deadly con.
He soon learns that the villagers near the site are also being conned. The village is attacked by men of the Peruvian mafia with automatic weapons intent on extorting the couple and eventually killing everyone in the village. Rex's background as a black ops professional along with help from Digger may not be able to overcome such fierce odds to save everyone.
Great story, creatively written with wonderful characters and interesting environments will keep you reading long into the night.

Rex and his dog Digger's latest adventure, in and around a village in the high Andes in Peru, has everything a great thriller needs. Bad guys, lost treasure, corruption, environmental concern, and fast-pace non-stop action threaded through with humour and a touch a romance. Never one for sugary sickly romance, the women in Rex's life are capable, competent, feisty and strong characters who provide the perfect partnership for Rex and Digger. If the dog likes them they are OK! The impact of the outside world on small isolated communities is thrown into focus, highlighting their simple way of life, their customs and beliefs and how these are impacted by outside forces, by those who come armed with the intent to deceive or corrupt the villagers. As is often the case, those who pay the greatest price are the youngest and most vulnerable as they are left fighting a mysterious illness. Can Rex and Digger sort it all out and help the villagers overcome their nightmares?
This was an ARC supplied freely in exchange for an honest review: it's worth five stars and is highly recommended to anyone who likes intelligent exciting fast paced thrillers. Even if I'd paid for it it would be getting 5 stars from me!
Peru is the scene for this story where Rex Dalton and Digger, his inherited dog and constant companion, are spending time quietly exploring this country. During dinner one night, he hears a conversation between two men that gives him cause for concern, especially as an older couple seem taken in by this conversation. This leads Rex to join the older couple in an expedition to a high Andes village, and the story takes off from there. They are reacquainted with one of the men from the overheard conversation and Digger’s reaction to this individual gives Rex cause for further concern. It evolves that there is Inca treasure, rumoured to be had, and this becomes the central issue in a scam to cheat the couple out of money. Rex turns the table on the scammers and there are twists and turns to the story especially when he discovers that there are children in the village, that are extremely ill. Once again Rex’s military training comes in very handy when a local gang also try to extort money from the visitors. With the assistance of the villagers and a Peruvian government official backed by local police, the gang and the con men are beaten at their own game. An interesting story with several twists that make for a good read. Moses
The Inca Con, like all the books in the Rex Dalton thriller series, is a non-stop, roller coaster thrill ride. A thriller with more twists and turns than a sidewinder’s path in the desert sands. In The Inca Con, we find Rex and Digger half-way around the world from Thailand, in Peru. Once again, all Rex wants is some peace and quiet while he pursues his interests in visiting historical sites. But Rex attracts trouble like a magnet attracts iron filings.
In The Inca Con, Rex and his war dog Digger, take on scam artists who are trying to scam and elderly couple out of $50,000, a band of armed insurgents, and finding the cure for the illness that had many of the native children ill. All the while having to protect his real identity.
This is my third time reading The Inca Con, but the fast-paced action still kept me glued to the edge of my seat and kept me turning the pages until I read the very last word in the very last sentence. Like with all the Dalton books, JC Ryan sets us up to read the next book in the series with just enough of a preview to hook us. You will have no choice but to head on over to Amazon and download The French Girl, Book 6 in the series, if you don’t already have it in your library.
Ah, the beauty of the Peruvian highlands. Machu Pichu is an abandoned settlement on the top of a mountain. What treasures could possibly be hidden in those environs? Add a former “Black Ops” hero and you have the makings of a fast-moving narrative.
Rex Dalton and his faithful companion “Digger” are hiking in the mountains. They are staying off the grid to avoid retribution from former employers and people with a grudge. Add in a couple of recently retired business owners from America and the tale evolves quickly. Setting in a bar in Curahucsi, Peru he couldn’t avoid hearing a discussion between two Americans. An elderly couple is sitting at a nearby table.
The discussion is obviously an attempt to set up a con. You as reader will quickly identify this part of the plot as “How to Avoid Being Scammed 101.” The story is very predictable but the description of the surrounding countryside provides a delightful mental image and an invigorating romp in the highlands of Peru.
The read is quick and entertaining. The ending is satisfying in it’s karmic outcome. We received this digital download from BookBub. 5 Stars CE Williams

Rex Dalton and his best friend/pack mate Digger are back in action in this 5th action packed book of the series . While taking a walking tour of Peru Rex and Digger find themselves in the thick of things, once again. Rex and Digger are invited by the retired American couple they’ve visit a new archeological dig the couple are considering investing in. The digs “founder” Junior is a fast talking wheeler/dealer and Digger doesn’t like him at all. Rex smells a rat and decides to accept the invitation to visit the site in the Andes Mountains. Before you can blink an eye Rex and Digger are meeting members of a Peruvian tribe, checking out this archeological dig, and meeting a beautiful woman. All this while trying to protect an elderly couple who may or may not be the target of a swindler. A fun and fast read, full of action. A page turner you won’t be able to put own until you get to the end. A great story full of depth with new character and old character that are continually growing.
Based on the plot, I’d go for three stars but the execution drags it down.
This novel is #5 of a line of “travel” adventures involving Rex Dalton and his dog (Digger.) Here, in the mountains of Peru, they are on a solitary tour to the famed ruins of Machu Pichu. Chaos ensues: archeological con jobs, simple natives, the Shinihg Path guerillas, gun battles, sick children, a little romance, etc. The plot is OK, depending a lot on luck and some genius dog antics, but drags on for far too many pages. Repitition and unnecessary backstory (even though this is my first introduction to the author’s work) made me give up several times. But, unwilling to abandon all my time already spent, I returned and persevered to the rather deflated end. I don’t think I’ll look for more volumes, although I’m a sucker for dogs in action.
This is a very entertaining reading however the plot is not so uncommon for those who live in South America or anywhere were ancient civilizations can be found. There´s always a lot of misguided people trying to take advantage of the naive ones, unfortunately. Loved to read how Rex and Digger without many people and guns were able to fight the intruders and also to make a good deed for the village where all the action takes place. There is a lot of action and interesting characters and also some telling of ancient inca history and legends. I downloaded a free copy of this book through Amazon and this is my unbiased review.
I enjoyed most of the book and it held my interest for sure. I was unhappy that the two single main characters had to be in bed together just days after meeting. It was beyond casual sex. Other than that disappointment, I read it enthusiastically. Altho I didn't really feel like I was in the story-there just wasn't enough describing the characters for me to picture them, I was in no way bored. Im not giving the book a recommendation or a bad mark but I'm not sure if I will read more if they all have to have the sleeping together part which wasn't necessary.
This is the second Rex Dalton thriller I've read. The first was "The Fulcrum," which I believe was #1. The Inca Con is #5, and I didn't feel like I was missing anything crucial by not having read 2-4. I liked this book. It moves along well and has a likable main character - Rex - oh, and also his dog Digger. I'm not usually a pet-story person, but Digger is a very engaging dog and I liked him too. The story takes place in Peru and includes a short visit to Machu Picchu. I also liked the older couple, Flo and Brady, who Rex befriended. There are a lot of elements to the plot and it held my interest well.
If you follow Rex and Digger then you will most surely not be disappointed in this book. It follows its true path of the other Rex books but this does not take away from it all. Rex and of course Digger are now set off to travel the innermost regions of Peru. They usually travel by themselves but for this area of Peru go with a travel group where they meet up with an older couple who have also met up with Junior who has a rather sketchy scheme going on with them. Digger keeps growling at Junior so you know right then and there he is up to no good. As always the writing, scenery and plots are excellent!
Ryan is my go-to whenever someone asks me to recommend a a writer of strong thrillers, especially with an archaeological setting. He is one of the best writers I know of. The Inca Con combines cupidity and stupidity, with the naivety of a people heretofore unexposed to the modern world. It might have been better for them if they still had been unexposed. But there is no turning back the clock. Recommended for all readers of thrillers featuring strong plots and believable characters.
Rex and Digger have arrived in Peru and met an Elderly couple in a restaurant. He sees a young man there, who seems to telling a tall tale about a problem he had. Turns out, the young man, Junior is going to lead the couple into the mountains. Rex has a bad feeling about the situation and decides that he and Digger should travel with them. An epic journey to Lima gets weirder when they arrive at small village, in the mountains. A Non-stop awesome, read!!
Enjoying from the first pages, the walk thru Peru, with his dog Digger, who thinks he is more human and wanting human food, much to Rex dismay. To see Machu Picchu he had to have a guide to enter, when evening came, most had left where was his guide. Digger came to Rex and finding the guide injured. Next day Rex and Digger join a group going to visit local villages, with curiosity that soon was dashed, with Digger disliked of Junior, and the trip went downhill from there. Finding it was a con. Great read having been there and for those memories as I read,
The Inca Con is the fifth book in the "A Rex Dalton Thriller" series and is a great addition to the series.
I really enjoyed this book. Rex and Digger are happily exploring historical Peru when they uncover a con at an archaeological site. This book is well written and intriguing. I love the relationship between Rex and Digger. There is a mysterious illness of sick children, lost treasure, action, tension, and some romance. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
Rex and Digger find themselves drawn into a con while exploring the highlands of Peru. While immersing himself in the history, charm and mystique that comes with the territory evil still rears its ugly head. And once again the "talents" which Rex possess are pressed into action to subvert the plans of an established con team on unsuspecting potential wealthy donors. There's not as much action as in previous books but the read is as good and you not end up disappointed
Rex has a way with attractive women. But the romances always end the same way. No matter how the reader expects a long-term relationship to developers the result is the same: Rex has something he must bring to completion before he can make a total commitment. A spoiler perhaps but a part of Rex's persona. Keep reading, the mark of a great series. Lots of action woven into a low key romance makes for a wonderful story. Cannot wait for the next one.
I love Rex and Digger. Awesome action with my favorite characters. I am retired military along with my husband and we support our brothers and sisters still serving and those who are no longer serving active but need our support and thanks. This story is awesome and a tribute! I the story and always look forward to another Rex and Digger adventure.
I received this book from the author and am voluntarily giving an honest review.
Rex is on a walking tour in Peru, soaking in scenery and history. He is fine with just his former military dog for company. Unfortunately trouble seems to keep finding him. When he is invited by an older couple to join them as they check out previously undiscovered ruins, he tags along for the oral histories he may find in a nearby remote village. But things aren't as they seem and he soon finds himself protecting the innocent.
This was an enjoyable adventure thriller featuring an ex-special ops soldier and his service dog. The story moved right along and the premise was not too far away from reality. This was my first "Rex Dalton" book and I would be interested in reading more over time. This is not a deep thinking book with the plot, characters, dialog, and relationships all quite superficial - not necessarily a bad thing if you're just looking for light entertainment.
Third Rex Dalton book I have read and I am growing to like Dalton and his constant companion Digger. This episode Dalton is encouraged to accompany an older couple to visit a small Peruvian village high up in the Andes. What they discover is amazing, full of intrigue and deceit the tale allows Dalton and Digger to dominate the plot line. Enjoyable reading, criminal but not in a violent manner. Will read more Rex Dalton for sure
JC Ryan is not a 5 star author. Even ten doesn't do him justice!
All his books have everything I need to be so deeply engrossed that time loses meaning and my wake up alarm reminds me it's time to return to my life and begin my day. This story was no exception. I could copy-paste this to the several Red 'n' Digger adventures as all were so exceptional as to defy a different review!
