Ashley is on her way home for Thanksgiving when she is kicked to the curb by her boyfriend.
That is bad enough, but now she will be disappointing her family who hoped she was finally settling down. The only thing that could make it worse is to be rescued by Eric, her first love.
To try and salvage a potentially miserable holiday. They agree to pretend to be a couple. No problem -- until her mother expects them to -- share a bedroom.
What had seemed like a simple solution now had the potential to become a heart breaking situation. How could she even think of sleeping next to the devastatingly hot Eric -- the man was made for sex. Hot, steamy sex. The kind that could make a woman risk everything for one last chance.

This short story is part of an 11-story (sort of) series by various authors called Second Helpings (similar to The Cocktail Girls and Halloween Honeys). Each (save one, in my opinion) is a second-chance story of couples who reunite at Thanksgiving. Each entry is the series is a short story of 30-50 pages, or so, and run from medium to high heat. All stories are stand-alone and can be read in any order. And, I don’t think I give anything away to say they’re all served with a happy ending. While none are horrible (I didn’t hate any of them), some are better than others. (All stories in the series are listed below.)
Roll Play by Sher Dillard is the story of Ashley and Eric. Ashley and Eric were high school sweethearts who haven’t seen one another for a few years. On the way to dinner at her mom’s with her boyfriend, she finds out he’s been cheating on her. She demands he let her out of the car. He does, and leaves her on the side of the road, suitcase in hand. Ashley starts walking, then is rescued when someone drives by. It turns out to be her old boyfriend, Eric, on his way home for Thanksgiving. Eric listens to her tale of woe and agrees to pretend to be her boyfriend for the holiday. Neither is going to let this second chance pass.
This is one of my favorites of the stories in the series. We get a good picture of Ashley and Eric’s relationship via memories and dialog. We also know they still love each other and root for them to get back together. When they do (again, all HEAs in this series!), it’s sweet and passionate.
From Tessa Blake’s book (Man-Berry Sauce:Second Helpings): Thank you so much to all my co-conspirators for making what started as a dumb dirty joke into an amazing, fun project. I love you all!
From Tracy Lorraine’s book (Cheeky Trifle:Second Helpings): You know that moment when a friend says something as a joke but then it somehow takes on a life of its own? Well, that’s the Second Helpings series. What started off as some tongue-in-cheek Thanksgiving book title ideas turned into a series of sexy shorts, so thanks for that, Alexis Adaire! This was a very quick, very fun, little project that had us all crying with laughter. So I want to say thank you to all involved for making me step outside my comfort zone and come up with this sexy little short. All normal service can now resume, until one of you has another idea, anyway.
I so appreciate simple clear cut stories like this. May not be the most ideal and realistic approach, pretending or roll playing may or may not work in the end. But should it be because these two characters have history, attraction and feeling s for it other....It did! Eric and Ashley's story sincere and cute!
This was a fun and light short-story. It is fast-paced and runs through the story quite quickly, but at the same time, it feels a lot longer than the 38 pages that it was. You really feel like you get to know the characters. They are likeable and relatable. Ashley is found hitchhiking her way home by her first love, Eric. She has just dumped the latest loser boyfriend in a long line of loser boyfriends so when she feels the old pull to her old flame, she can’t ignore it. Eric finds himself in the right place at the right time and finds the girl he hasn’t been able to get out of his head all these years. I liked that there were no significant cliches at the end and that we get a proper background of what happened to the couple. Their reasons for being apart in the first place made sense and concurrently the reasons for still having feelings also rang true. Overall this was an enjoyable and pleasant read.

If you're looking for a decent Thanksgiving-themed quickie romance, then this book will probably suffice. Eric and Ashley were very sweet together, and I definitely could feel the chemistry and history between the two. As for the sex, it was very sweet yet steamy at the same time. I mean, it wasn't exactly setting my curtains on fire, but then, I prefer my love scenes to be a bit, shall we say, dirtier. Anywho, while I definitely did feel the love between the main characters, I also feel that there could've been a little more buildup to the makeup sex and that their reconciliation could've been expanded upon just a bit further. Otherwise, it just made the ending feel slightly rushed, with everything getting wrapped up a bit too neatly. Which is fine, I guess, if you're looking for something sweet and uncomplicated. I mean, there are worse ways to waste your time, especially if you can get past some of the book's fragmented sentences and missing words/letters.
3.5 Stars Roll play is a short story that is a part of the ‘’a second helpings’’ novella series. This story is short, fast paced and a nice read. The writing style is easy to follow, the characters likeable and the storyline sweet. Having just broken up with her cheating boyfriend, Ashley finds herself on the side of the road. The last person she expected to help her is her high school sweetheart. Her first love. Needing to get home for thanksgiving and a boyfriend to take home, Eric agrees to help. What both of them don’t expect is to realise how much they love one another. The chemistry between them is clear to see and I liked them together. I liked that Eric and Ashley grabbed the second chance they had been given. This story is super sweet and I was satisfied throughout. I liked the ending and the year later part of this story. The storyline for this book is easy to follow and a nice read.
Roll Play tells the short story of Eric & Ash reconnecting for a second chance. Eric picks up Ash on the side of the road. Ash just found out her boyfriend was cheating on her & couldn't spend another minute with him let alone take him to meet her mother for Thanksgiving dinner so she made him let her out. Eric & Ash have a history & this opportunity gives them another chance. Steamy & sweet. Made my heart melt.
Second Helpings are collaborations of short stories by different authors sharing a Thanksgiving theme & second chances. I've read the other collaborations by this and the other authors and loved them (The Cocktail Girls, Halloween Honeys). These individual short stories are quick reads. Their brevity doesn't lack romance, steam or that 'Awww' feeling when your heart melts.
A well written fast paced story with nice storyline and plot. It is sweet, steamy, passionate and captivating. I like they have never risked their friendship but now as adult they have to communicate and let fate drop on them. Enjoyable read that felt real because of the likeable characters are the use of words. Recommendable engaging read.
First love second chance/fake dating with some Thanksgiving family holiday as the background. This one was again short and sweet from the second helpings short stories. I would give this maybe a one 🌶️ especially compared to the others, but still good. I would have enjoyed hearing a little bit more of the MMC thoughts and feelings during his pov. I felt less connected to him.
Bf dumps her on side of road, a truck show up it s her high school sweetheart. He agrees to be the bf in front of family and they still have feelings for each other and a mother chance.
Ash finds out her boyfriend is cheating on her on their way to her moms. She gets out of the car and luckily is picked up by Eric, her high school love. Such a sweet and quick reconnection.
That was the most shortest and beautiful love story. It was sweet and heartwarming. The storyline was spot on and was well executed. The ending was priceless.
