Baron Calhoun needs an heir for his vast empire. He should choose a wife from a family of means. He could easily take his pick from the debutants in Houston. Instead, he’s captivated by the penniless, shop girl who works at Nelson’s Mercantile.
Emily. The girl with startling violet eyes and fragile smile, is only nineteen. Far too young for a man of thirty. Moreover, she claims she has no intention to marry. Ever.
Emily is as infuriatingly stubborn as she is lovely, but she hides a secret that puts her life in danger. Even worse, her family intends to marry her off to a stranger as a mail order bride.
Baron won’t stand back and let anyone threaten the girl he yearns to take as his bride. If he’s going to protect her, he’ll have to step in and offer a proposal she can’t refuse…
After the First brother marries in the first book....
Apparently the author decided the shopkeeper's niece needed rescuing, and as the scene opens, we see a bit more about here than we have before. She's been hurt. Her aunt doesn't want to take on the prostitute sister's daughter. The only clothes she has are basically brothel worthy only, except for one muslin dress. She's been saving money to escape but her plan is not well thought out. The aunt is convinced the girl is after her husband, the crabby, drunkard, abusive uncle. She wants the girl set up as someone's high end mistress, out of her way. After a bit she steals the little the girl saved and they stop paying her. Once the uncle leaves a huge bruise on her face, their landlord, thw banker, evicts them, calling the loan due immediately, and having his men pack everything up and run them out of town. Henhad planned to offer to allow the uncle to finally buy the building plus pay what would essentually be a bride price, but the evidence of yet more physical and verbal abuse puts oaid to that. He has tried to rescue the girl before but he found her resistant, and not realizing what her mother was or why she has no desire to marry, he nevertheless agrees to a marriage in name only (esp since he keeps putting his foot in his mouth with his offers of help). His sister & BIL are visiting, so since the BIL is a minister, he marries them the same day Baron brings her home. Things go pretty well for them at first c9nsidering, but her mother made sure she had a good education courtesy of a "scholarship" with one of her "customers" whom she essentially sold her 14 yer old daughter to. The girl is fluent in Friench, well read, curious, bas a good business mind, and a husband who came up from living in a garret with his sister & oarents to owning real estate, a bank, and assorted investments. Starting out with brawn and self-study, he moves from foremam on a locomotive to bounty hunter, all the while saving and learning and investing. The final business meeting that he insists his wife attend is a snake pit for both though only one knows. It involves a mining investment with a group that does mining and shipping investments. Things go better than expected...the girl tells the person on her end of the trip her story and the son trying, with his mother's help, to rebuild his father's business back up from what was misspent, tells the husband his family's side, the latter while he and the husband are attempting to get out of a partly collapsed mine. The sister & BIL end up with a pleasant surprise of their own as well.
An excellent book. I was hoping the continuation of the series would be good and it was. I like Baron in the first book and we only got a glimpse of Emily but no insight to her and what was happening in her life. Baron is an older rancher who also owns the bank and the mercantile her aunt and uncle rent. They are not nice people and she has as history from her mother she is trying to get away from. There is a lot of depth to this story as the first one in the series had. Sex is only mentioned and it works perfectly here. Baron wants to take care of her and falls in love with her quickly. He is willing to wait for Emily to deal with her past and learn to love him. Take the time to read this. You will like it.
Charlotte Dearing has created another masterpiece in his book. We have here the story of a young girl who was groomed by her own mother to become a prostitute and then turned over to her aunt and uncle to finish the job by belittling her to rid her of her self-confidence so they could either force her into prostitution or sell her to the highest bidder. The young girl dreamed of making her way to a successful life.
Read this book to see how the girl tried to give herself a better life and see how she finally succeeded.
I read book one and when I finished I automatically downloaded book two. Emily is mentioned in book one and the scene is not mentioned in book two. I'm the outside looking in I thought her reticent to share her history a bit immature and silly. However people looked upon things differently then. However I enjoyed the characters and I loved how "Mr. Calhoun" saved the day and that he truly loved her. A clean read and we'll worth the time. Now on to book 3.
I truly enjoy this story. I’ve read it two or three times. The hero is so endearing and the heroine strong in the face of adversity. I like the way the hero pushes the heroine to tackle obstacles she thinks she can’t. And the way her presence and personality just push him to make the effort to be the best husband for her was awesome. If you enjoy sweet, clean, historical romance, you should try this one.
All of the characters were well defined. Some of the situations were unlikely, but all were well written.
I loved the banter between the main couple and the old widow was a hoot. I also loved that the ladies didn't sit around waiting for stuff to happen. They jumped in to join the men in the work.
Enjoyed! The thing I have enjoyed the most in reading C. Dearing books is there is no fussing and fighting in the beginning, then FINDING happiness of true love, then a sudden disaster will throw everything into a whirlwind for a spell. Which seems to be the same old stuff, to get to the end. Her books seems to keep your mood happy throughout.
Grace O’Brian had travelled from Boston to Texas to be a mail order bride. When she had arrived she found her husband had died a few days before proceeded to his bothers house and took charge of the baby. Her brothers-in-law were away on a cattle drive. Matt was the first to return and they butted heads right off.
Well written, clean and sweet, and not requiring any lurid sexual details to enhance this story! No f bombs to be found in this text, either! What a pleasure to read, as most writers take the license to spread trash language throughout these days. This is a series I am Thoroughly enjoying reading.
The author makes you feel as tho you were with Emily on this journey with Barron. You can see the moment she realizes she is in love with him, when his life is in danger, trapped in the silver mines. Really enjoyed reading Emily’s life revealed.
This was a sweet and clean story. I loved how patient Baron was with Emily and how much he loved her. It was a wonderful storyline and I loved Elizabeth and Henry being included like they were.
Emily has experienced quite a lot of trouble in her life. She has a hard time allowing herself to be loved and cared for. Sometimes it’s the girl who isn’t interested who gets the interest of a certain someone. I loved the last sentence..... (read the story first!)
I love the transformation the characters as they begin their lives together. Baron is the hard-nosed man who owns half the town and Emily is the abused store girl. A must read to discover their adventures.
Nice, clean story. FINALLY a book where the heroine and hero are not at odds all the time. Another author would probably have made the hero a real jerk because of something in her past. (I have already forgotten their names :>) ) Good read.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I like that it had a happy ending and there was not too much violence. I would recommend this book to anyone, who enjoys reading about mail order brides in the 1880's,
Fabulous read had to keep reading to see how Emily and Baron would get closer together and then to see if Baron and David will get out of the mine that collapses now looking forward to the next book..
I loved this story! Mr Calhoun is the richest man in town. He rents the mercantile to a man and his wife. Their 19 year old niece works there as well. Mr Calhoun notices that something isn’t quite right with their situation and determines to keep an eye on it. Intriguing story.
Started out great. The ending is rushed skipping a month and then a year with nothing in between. To spend so much time in character and plot development to just skip ahead was disappointing.
