When Giant wakes up with a big hurting head and a sore raspy throat, he finds the cure is a bowl of Boy Soup! Giant captures five boys and Kate, who all protest his plan. But Kate soon comes up with her own remedy and convinces the Giant that the soup should be made, not of boys, but by boys.
Yesterday evening,at quarter past three My Daughter brought a new book to me. It seems it was sent home and was totally free, Obtained through a program from a bank called "TD".
Upon quick review the book seemed quite grand With beautiful pictures and light in my hand. As you can imagine my daughter was eager To have it read though my skills were quite meager.
So we sat on the couch with our snacks by our side and we open the book and buckled in for a ride.
A story was told of a big, sick old giant Who was not only tall but oddly defiant. He read an old treatment for treating his croup That treatment required he eat some Boy Soup.
Though eating small children had long been forbidden, His poor sickly state called desires once hidden. So off he went and six children he 'napped and fun and hilarity occurred after that.
This book was not written in flowery prose With boring descriptions to make children doze. Instead its a story with beautiful rhyme That my kids will enjoy, time after time.
Boy Soup, is a poetry introduction at heart and for my young children there's no better start, than to teach them that art is both beauty and fun and Boy Soup delivers both these forms in one.
Its about a giant who is sick and he looks in a cook book and sees "boy soup". He gets 5 boys and some girls and the boys and girls scratch off some things from the recipe and put in different things. They made the soup and it tasted gross.
I like the part where the boys are playing in the tree and the giant grabs because it was funny when he popped up with his hand and grabbed them.
Boy Soup by Canadian Author Loris Lesynski and illustrated by the ever-popular and recognizable Michael Martchenko was a fun read-aloud book. In a twist my son read this to me while we made our own ‘Boy Soup’; chicken Tuscan soup with Bow Tie pasta. A soup made by boys, not made with boys.
What's it all about: What does a giant do when he wakes up with a giant cold and a sore throat? What does he do? Well he consults his "Giant's Home Medical Guide" of course. Eyeballs scrolling down they land on the perfect remedy, Boy Soup! He will need to assemble some boys for the recipe but the fun part is he mistakenly corals a GIRL, named Kate. Kate is so smart, she figures out a way to save the day and rescue the boys from a sure tragedy. She convinces the Giant that the recipe calls for soup made by boys and not with the boys as the main ingredient. The book takes young readers on a rhyming journey that brings friendship, courage, and fast-thinking to life as Kate saves her friends from a soupy fate.
Children will think this book is so silly because the giant wants to make soup out of BOYS! When the little girl tricks the Giant into eating a soup made BY the boys instead of made WITH the boys, he spits it out so hard that the children are blown home. They open up their very own resturant and receive a giant envelope with an apology note from the Giant. Such a funny story with the rhyming words and silly ideas that come from the Giant.
Clever idea. Starts out strong, but rhymes quickly become stilted and feel forced. Quick-thinking girl character helps the boys out of their predicament, where they are about to be eaten by a giant. Ending seems somewhat disconnected from the rest of the plot, not enough energy to match the rest of the storyline.
A giant woke up feeling very sick. He read in the Giants Home Medical Guide that a bowl of boy soup would make him feel better. He scooped up five boys and a girl, but the girl began to work out a plan to help them all escape. This is an entertaining story in fun rhyme and beautiful illustrations.
Great Tumble Book story! The kids loved the trick. I loved the verse. Great rhymes. In the end, the giant is glad he didn't eat the boys. Lots of good descriptive adjectives in here!
{my thoughts} – This book is a cute little book about a Giant that gets sick. He finds this book with medical remedies and he finds one about boy soup being the cure he needs. So he goes about collecting all the ingredients he needs including the boys. However, when he obtains the boys he also gets a girl and the girl conspires against the giant with the boys and they make the page with the recipe go blank and the girl tells the giant she knows how to make the soup but the soup is suppose to be made by boys and not with boys in it. In order to find out what happens next you will need to read the book.
I enjoyed this book because it is some what written in rhyme form. I love poetry and I enjoy reading it in whatever means I can come across it. I also liked how the story went right along with the pictures. It was well written and it flowed really nicely. I think that any young child would enjoy reading or being read this book.
I look forward to reading more books by this author in the future.
Big G. the Giant woke up with a terrible cold. He reaches for his copy of the Giants Home Medical Guide for a cure. The best thing to fix a cold - Boy Soup!
Lesynski weaves a rhyming tale that offers humor, danger, and heroism. Humor in the secondary silly soup and the restaurant outcome at the end. Danger in the stolen children and the primary soup. Heroism in the great escape! Boy Soup would be a great read-aloud for elementary students. It also lends itself to additional activities about reading recipes, following directions, and cooking food together.
Readers might question if Boy Soup is by Robert Munsch, but Munsch and Lesynski share the same illustrator: Michael Martchenko. If readers enjoyed Munsch tales, they will enjoy Boy Soup as well.

This was a great book I love to use for adjectives. It's a book about a giant with a cold that gets a cure out of a giant's home medical guide. The remedy called a bowl of boy soup which the giant caught 5 boys and a girl name Kate. Kate comes with a plan that tricks that giant into thinking that the soup needed to be made by boys not of boys. It worked and made the giant feel better, I loved when he sneezed all the boys and Kate back down to their home. This book was very entertaining and good for finding adjectives to help describe person, place, and things. I think any student grades K-2 would enjoy this book.
WOW!! every little boy will love this book, and quite possibly the girls too (the hero of the story is a girl).
6 young kids outsmart the sick giant, avoid being turned into soup, and cure his cold all at the same time.
a great rhyming story, full of all things yuck that little boys seem to love (a soup containing mud, glue, fleas, shampoo, really rotten bananas, & much much more)
lots of fun!!
*Thanks to NetGalley & the publishers for the chance to read and review an advanced copy
What do Giants do when they get sick? They refer to the Giants Medical Book of course and then seek out boys to go into Boy Soup to help him feel better. Only he captures a girl, who turns out to be the star of the book and through her cleverness saves the day!
Colorful illustrations add to the storyline and kids, especially girls, will be drawn to the girl heroine, the likeable giant, and the funny story.
This is an entertaining book, and is even better when listened to as an animated audiobook on Tumblebooks. The story is fun and I love how brave Kate is. We also loved how inventive the boys were when preparing the soup. Overall, it's a fun story and we enjoyed watching the animated version of it together.
A giant has a terrible cold, and his medical book says the only cure is a hot bowl of boy soup. He catches some boys, but wouldn't you know it, he accidentally catches a girl too, and of COURSE, it's up to her to save the day. Adorable artwork, humor and just enough gross to appeal to both genders.
Giant searches the cookbook for a cure for his bad cold. Finds a recipe for "Boy Soup," collects a group of boys and a girl. None want to be eaten, the girl leads the group to safety and helps the Giant cook a soup.
Not a book that I would include in my classroom library. A giant gets a cold and reads that the cure is boy soup. The boys and a girl trick the giant into thinking that Boy Soup is soup made by boys.
Ok story, but I thought the rhyming text was rather awkward in places. My niece was thoroughly repulsed by the soup that was concocted in this story, but other than that, this book really didn't get much reaction from the little children.
3 Stars The giant is sick. He knows what will make him better is a big bowl of boy soup. But first, he has to capture the boys. The story is not bad but seems to lack that something that makes it a classic to be read in generations to come
A cute, slightly horrifying (the soup ingredients!!), story about a giant trying to cure his cold. I love that the only girl in the story saves the day!
