Mostly About Memory Palaces

To my mind, photographic memory is a very specific type of memory; that is, it is the ability to see something, whether it's an object or words on a page, and take a mental picture of it so that you can refer back to it without having the object itself. The author seems to have a completely different definition of photographic memory. In fact, I would say this book is just about memory, not a photographic memory. A quick look at the table of contents reveals that the author will focus on several different types of memory enhancement like memory palaces, method of loci, and mind mapping. The author spends nearly half of this 55-page PDF, which is how I received this review copy, on memory palaces. As I was reading along in this chapter, before I realized that so much of the book was going to be taken up by it, I thought that finally this author was going to give us a practical book. I have found this author’s other books mostly to just be surveys of a topic, telling the *what* but not the *how*. But I was immediately disappointed when the next chapter on the method of loci was literally just over two-and-a-half pages! It was the same with mind mapping, which is a huge and complex topic in memory circles. Two and a half pages for topics like these don't give you near enough information to actually do the techniques. I found it odd, too, in the final chapter of practical applications, that the author actually spent more time on what is essentially card counting than he did on these two other very important topics. So, unless you want to learn about memory palaces, I recommend finding another book on memory.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

A guide for everyday memory as well as for advanced studying.

This short book gives a selection of memory techniques from memorising short lists, to long lists of information and even sets of numbers. Many of these techniques are ancient, and trusted, but there are some new ideas presented here as well. Whether you would simply like to remember shopping lists or to learn to study effectively, this book is a good introduction to the science of mnemonics.

This is an interesting read. I already do some of the activities as I try to keep my mind busy since I love to learn things. I will work on incorporating more of the techniques.

I received an ARC copy and I am voluntarily
